Luxus trifft auf Abenteuer: Was macht Ventures by Seabourn einzigartig?
Saturday, August 24 - At Sea
Bow lounge
Seabourn Square
The Club
Our Suite
We had a nice, relaxing sea day on our way to Honiara tomorrow, in the Solomon Islands. It will be another change over day for some crew and passengers and the start of our "second" trip. We had only requested a specific cabin for the first trip, choosing a "best available cabin" option for our second and third legs. We were reassigned to a cabin on floor 8, which the cruise line sees as a significant upgrade, since we paid for the least expensive category. In fact, all the suites are the same until one gets into more deluxe categories, with amenities such as panoramic windows, or a two-story suite. We would normally make the switch on the changeover day, but since our new home was currently unoccupied, it was easier for us and the staff to move a day early. And this way we won't have to vacate our suite by 8AM tomorrow.
Since we don't have that much stuff, it was easy to put it in the little tubs the ship provided, and just load our suitcases and hangers on the cart, and walk our packs upstairs. We would have loved to stay on floor 6, but this way we will not have to move again, and we have decided that with all the great food on board, it doesn't hurt to have to do more stairs every day.
The Pursuit is a small enough ship that it is very easy to get around. Floor 6 is sort of the center of the operation, as in the bow there is the "bow lounge", with self service coffee, snacks, etc., a series of screens that are what the bridge has, showing position, speed, weather, etc., and access to the bow deck, where we spent a lot of time in Antarctica. The aft part of 6 is the Seabourn Square with a "living room" type atmosphere with a barista counter with snacks and gelato, the guest services folks, our future cruise consultant, and of course, the jigsaw puzzle.
Further below are the two restaurants, as well as the "discovery center", which is used for lectures and performances. Being on floor 8 we are now closer to the two bar/small performance spaces on 9, including the Club, our sushi spot, and trivia. There's a little more ship motion, but it's not that noticeable, and the room configuration is the same.
Our team won at trivia for our final time together, so we went out on a high note. We will be joining another existing team with friends we have made (and folks who are on for a long time, like us). The rest of our day was taken up by lectures and meals, as well as some catching up on emails, etc. Tomorrow we will be in a new country, and have nothing specific planned, as we will be taking a tour out of Honiara when we return in about three weeks. It will be another sea day for us, but without waves.

Luxury cruise line Seabourn breaks new ground by appointing the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners as the godparents of their newest expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit. This landmark decision signifies Seabourn's deep commitment to environmental stewardship, cultural responsibility, and sustainable tourism practices. A First for the Cruise Industry: Honoring Tradition and Community Seabourn takes the helm in a first for the cruise industry by selecting the Wunambal Gaambera people as Seabourn Pursuit's godparents. Traditionally, christening a ship involves selecting godparents to bestow blessings upon the vessel and its passengers. In this instance, the Wunambal Gaambera people, as the Traditional Owners of the Kimberley region in Australia, become symbolic guardians of Seabourn Pursuit, reflecting a commitment to respecting the lands and communities the ship will visit. Seabourn Sets Sail Natalya Leahy, President of Seabourn, emphasizes the significance of this selection: "We believe no one can give a better blessing to our ship than the communities we visit... We truly believe in the transformative power of travel, and when we visit local communities, we can both celebrate their culture and drive positive sustainable change in the places they call home." This appointment goes beyond a symbolic gesture. Seabourn acknowledges the importance of fostering long-term, sustainable partnerships. By collaborating with the Wunambal Gaambera people, Seabourn aims to contribute meaningfully to the cultural and economic well-being of the region. The Wunambal Gaambera People: Stewards of the Land and Sea The Wunambal Gaambera people are the rightful custodians of a vast Kimberley region encompassing the sea country around Ngula Jar Island (Vansittart Bay) and Yirinni (Hunter River), and extending to the freshwater country of Ngauwudu (Mitchell Plateau). Their rich cultural heritage and profound connection to the land and sea make them ideal partners for Seabourn Pursuit's inaugural voyage through Western Australia. The Wunambal Gaambera word for "godparent" is "garrangarru", which translates to "mother" or "listener." This beautifully captures the nurturing and supportive role the Wunambal Gaambera people will play in Seabourn Pursuit's journey. The Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC) embodies the spirit of ideal ambassadors for Seabourn Pursuit. Their established sustainable tourism initiatives and deep respect for the environment perfectly align with Seabourn's values. A Welcoming Presence: Wunambal Gaambera Participation in the Naming Ceremony Representatives from the WGAC will extend a warm welcome to Seabourn Pursuit guests at Ngula Jar Island on the Uunguu Coast. This special occasion will culminate in an inaugural dedication ceremony scheduled for June 29, 2024. A Lasting Partnership: Investing in a Sustainable Future Seabourn's commitment extends beyond the ceremonial. As part of this partnership, Seabourn will provide financial support to the WGAC to cultivate a self-sustaining art and craft industry. This initiative will empower Wunambal Gaambera artists to create and sell authentic works of art, fostering cultural preservation and economic opportunities. Furthermore, Seabourn will donate pearl shells, art supplies, and polishing materials to the WGAC, enabling the continued development of sustainable art and craft ventures. Sharing the Uunguu Experience Seabourn looks forward to collaborating with the Wunambal Gaambera people to offer guests a unique and enriching cultural experience, the "Uunguu Experience." This immersive program allows guests to partake in traditional welcome and smoking ceremonies, explore ancient rock art, witness captivating junta song and dance performances, and gain insights from Uunguu Rangers dedicated to protecting the land. Catherine Goonack, Chairperson of the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation, expresses her appreciation for this partnership: "We, the Wunambal Gaambera people, have a responsibility to look after and prosper from our country. Seabourn's contributions will assist us... to strengthen our Wanjina Wunggurr culture, and create economic opportunities for our people." Ms. Goonack highlights the importance of preserving their cultural heritage and traditions while ensuring a healthy future for generations to come. She welcomes the opportunity to share the Uunguu Experience with Seabourn guests and contribute to a mutually beneficial relationship.

Tom Hiddleston: Why we all need monsters and myths | BBC
Tom Hiddleston says it "felt very wild" playing the pastor of a village terrified by a mythical sea creature, in Apple TV's The Essex Serpent.
Set in Victorian coastal Essex and London, the series is based on Sarah Perry's award-winning book, and co-stars Homeland's Claire Danes.
Hiddleston's character, Will Ransome, tries to quell locals' fears, telling them the creature is "an invention, a symptom of the times we live in".
Danes plays London widow Cora Seabourne, who goes to the village to investigate reports of the serpent, after an earthquake dislodged fossils in the Essex landscape.
This causes the God-fearing locals to wonder else might have been awakened.
Rumours of a malevolent sea monster escalate after a local girl goes missing and is presumed dead. Some villagers work themselves into a frenzy, saying she was "taken for her sins by the Blackwater beast".
Describing the scripts as "brilliant", Hiddleston tells the BBC: "They were about complex people at a complex time, with a conflict of ideas."
He said making the series "felt very wild, and mirrored the passions of the story we were telling. I was really excited to do it".
'We like to be humbled'
Hiddleston is of course no stranger to monsters, having been on the receiving end of "Hulk-smash", as Loki in the Marvel films.
He thinks a seemingly endless fascination with mythical creatures is part of our need to account for things we don't understand.
"Monsters are symbols of mystery... they reflect our need to find meaning in our lives," he muses.
"I think human beings need, or are drawn, to externalise mystery. We like to be humbled by forces in nature and in our world that seem to be unexplained."
Given it's "probable we know we don't know everything", he thinks "we still have so many questions".
"And sometimes those questions coalesce into the shape of monsters, benign and otherwise."
His character Will's views are challenged by Cora, who he meets in the swirling coastal mists. Much of the plot centres around the tensions - both intellectual and sexual - between them.
The story's focus may be the serpent, but it pivots around Danes' charismatic Cora, going it alone with her young son after the death of her brutal husband.
But unlike many other period TV dramas, Cora is not looking for a new spouse.
"No. Oopsy daisy," laughs Danes, clearly delighted at her character's independence.
"Her intellectual pursuits are the driving force," she adds.
Cora shuns religion and is passionate about fossils. She is desperate to discover if the serpent is a dinosaur which escaped extinction.
"I think it's her eagerness to realise herself," she continues. "Her development had been quite arrested when she married this intensely controlling, abusive man.
"She's just so relieved to have a chance to breathe again."
'Mysterious past'
Prof Gowan Dawson, from University of Leicester's Victorian Studies Centre, told the BBC some of that era's most notable women "who collected and studied fossils did not marry, and devoted their lives to their palaeontological pursuits".
"This was the case with both Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot, who, despite their very different social backgrounds, worked together in Lyme Regis, and made some remarkable discoveries of fossilised sea creatures," he said.
"Fossils opened a window on a mysterious past populated by dragons and monsters, when Victorian Britain was otherwise focused on forging a new industrial future."
It has to be said that although the wild Essex seascape explored by Cora looks stunning, it also looks inescapably cold and damp.
Danes agrees.
"My long, high-tech underwear was heaven-sent - effective and very, very welcome," she says, grimacing slightly at the memory of being so chilly.
Clemence Poesy, who plays the pastor's wife Stella, adds she was saved by "some very elaborate, nude-coloured stuff, almost like wetsuits" under her dresses.
Poesy, who also features in an episode of Amazon Prime's new comedy Ten Percent, says her character is "quietly extraordinary" and a much smaller presence than Cora.
The talk of monsters resonates with her too, not least because her five-and-a-half year-old is pretty obsessed with them.
"It is a thing isn't it?" she says with a laugh.
The actress also thinks the storyline about doubt, science and belief resonates with modern-day life, comparing it with some people denying the existence of Covid.
"It just felt like science about coronavirus was sometimes denied without any kind of evidence," she says.
"I think there's a space online that allows superstitions or myths or things to just kind of grow in a way that they probably didn't before. Because we were filming this in the middle of a pandemic, it felt quite accurate."
The book and TV series are very much about a clash between science, religion and mythology. But Hiddleston's character thinks religion offers more peace of mind than science, and that without faith, people will invent evil creatures.
The scientific developments of the day are seen in London, featuring some undeniably gory medical scenes.
Fear the Walking Dead actor Frank Dillane plays Luke Garrett, a young doctor pushing boundaries by performing open heart surgery.
"I think the Victorians were incredibly forward-thinking - it was a time of massive advancements in science, architecture, philosophy and religion," he says.
"I think that we have this misconception of them being stuffy, but actually they weren't."
He says it was "a lot of fun" researching his part, and he learned "Victorian hospitals were not the nicest places in the world, they were often called death houses".
"Often if you went in, you weren't coming out," he adds.
"Surgeons back then were often referred to as glorified butchers - there would be gangs roaming London, killing people and selling them on to surgeons, or digging up corpses to operate on."
He also discovered that "surgeons were basically people with knives, and 50 years prior to this, they would be butchers or hairdressers".
Describing the "red and blue swirling thing" outside a hairdresser or barber's shop, he says: "Well that was because back then, if hairdressers also did surgery, you would tie your bloody rags around the light outside, so people knew - they cut hair, but they'll also cut you up if you need it."
His surgical scenes were done with the help of an on-set surgeon, and Dillane adds: "There were prosthetic rubber bodies and people in the background squeezing hearts."
The driving force behind the series was director Clio Barnard, who has been nominated for Baftas for her films including 2013's The Selfish Giant and this year's Ali & Ava.
Hiddleston says he received the scripts "with a beautiful letter attached" from Barnard, who he had "admired for a long time".
Dillane adds: "Clio was a big draw for me. I thought it was a great opportunity to work with a brilliant director."
Hiddleston adds that despite all the conflicts in the story, he found the connection between Will and Cora "very optimistic".
"One of my favourite scenes is a conversation that we have on a beach, when Cora says, 'science requires dreams just like your theology. You have to make a leap in the dark from ignorance to understanding'.
"And Will simply replies, 'faith'."
Hiddleston goes on: "The resonant thing for me I think is - maybe it's just getting older - how do we feel that our brief, brief time on this planet has meaning?
"And so the curiosity I am inspired by is to keep thinking, keep listening and stay open-minded. You never know where the inspiration is going to come from."

31.03.2021. Ideal ocean cruise ship: Ship sizes and what they mean for your cruise
Ships sizes range from megaships (over 4,000 passengers) to very small vessels and luxury yachts whose passengers number in mere dozens, and knowing the differences is key to planning your best cruise vacation.
Cruise experts have divided today’s ships into six categories and provides information on the benefits each provides: XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL.
Extra, Extra Large Ships (XXL) – 4,000+ passengers
These megaships boast unparalleled options in entertainment and amenities. They truly give the impression of being on board a floating city and provide endless choices in dining, activities and shopping (some are so large as to even incorporate a “mall” area with brand name stores). If you desire a resort-type feel from your cruise or worry about sea-sickness, this may be your best option.
Some benefits of XXL ships:
•A large variety of cabin options in every price range •Dining options that range from small, informal cafes to 5-star restaurants •Over the top entertainment options that include Broadway-quality shows, 3-D movie theaters, large casinos, extensive waterpark areas and more •Extremely comprehensive children’s programs and amenities •Increased ship stability; little sea motion
Example XXL ships:
•Royal Caribbean International: Allure of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas; Ovation of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, and Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas •Disney Cruise Line: Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy •Costa Cruise Line: Costa Diadema, Costa Venezia, Costa Smeralda •MSC Cruises: MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seaside, MSC Virtuosa; MSC Grandiosa, MSC Bellissima, MSC Seaview, MSC Preziosa, MSC Divina MSC Splendida, •Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Escape •Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival Panorama, Carnival Vista, Carnival Mardi Gras
Extra Large Ships (XL) – 3,000-3,999 passengers
These extra-large ships are a destination unto themselves and are especially good for families and multigenerational cruises due to the many amenities found onboard. There is something for everyone, and many cruisers enjoy their time onboard as much as they do the destinations they visit.
Some benefits of XL ships:
•An abundance of cabin options in many different price ranges •A variety of dining options, ranging from ultra-casual to very upscale and formal •A popular favorite with families due to the extensive children’s amenities and programs •Round-the-clock facilities and activities, such as casinos, water parks, gyms and spas •Excellent entertainment options and Broadway-quality shows like Royal Caribbean’s productions of Chicago, Hairspray and Saturday Night Fever
Example XL ships:
•Royal Caribbean International: Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas •Princess Cruises: Caribbean Princess, Crown Princess, Emerald Princess, Majestic Princess, Ruby Princess, Regal Princess, Royal Princess, Sky Princess •Carnival Cruises: Carnival Splendor, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Dream, Carnival Breeze, Carnival Magic, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Sunrise •Celebrity Cruises: Celebrity Reflection, •MSC Cruises: MSC Poesia, MSC Magnifica, MSC Musica, •Costa Cruises: Costa Fascinosa, Costa Favolosa, Costa Magica, Costa Pacifica •Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Joy
Large Ships (L) – 2,000 to 2,999 passengers
Large ships offer many of the same amenities as the XL ships, on a slightly smaller scale. They don’t necessarily require a ship map to navigate to entertainment and activity options, and tend to have more personal touches.
Some benefits of L ships:
•Many cabin options in different price ranges •Numerous dining options, ranging from very casual to formal •A popular favorite with families due to the extensive children’s amenities and programs •Also popular with older cruisers, as the pace onboard is not as frenetic •A variety of activities, such as casinos, gyms and spas and often there are bridge instructors on longer itineraries •Entertainment options may include things like a fireworks display, outdoor movies and stage shows •Onboard lecturers are often more cerebral with topics like history, politics and geography.

Medium Ships (M) – 951 to 1,999 passengers
Medium ships generally offer a slower pace than their large counterparts, with fewer crowds, less noise and more modest offerings when it comes to activity and entertainment options. Many cruisers prefer this size of ship for its “relaxation” vibe. Many of these ships tend to be more luxurious with more personal service.
Some benefits of M ships:
•Many of the premium cruise lines have ships that fall into this category •Several dining options •Medium-size ships still tend to have amenities like casinos, pools and spas •Entertainment options tend to include more enrichment activities •Attracts a more mature crowd that is focused on relaxation and enjoyment of the voyage •Smaller size of the ships open up options as far as itineraries and ports •Itineraries are likely to be 10 days or longer
Example M Ships:
•Holland America Line: HAL Maasdam, HAL Veendam, HAL Amsterdam, HAL Rotterdam, HAL Volendam, HAL Zaandam, HAL Oosterdam, HAL Westerdam, HAL Zuiderdam, HAL Noordam •Princess Cruises: Coral Princess, Island Princess, Dawn Princess, Sea Princess, Sun Princess •Crystal Cruises: Crystal Serenity •Oceania Cruises: Oceania Riviera •Costa Cruises: Costa Classica, Costa Victoria, Costa neoRomantica, Costa neoRiviera •Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line: Grand Celebration •Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Sun
Small Ships (S) – 950 passengers or less
Small ships fill a niche for cruisers that are looking for more in-depth exploration of the regions they visit. They can visit ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, and exotic itineraries are the standard. Most river cruise ships and almost all the luxury lines have ships that fall into this category.
Some benefits of S ships:
•Most cabins are suites and have balconies •Luxury and service are frequently a focal point of a small ship voyage •Amenities, while limited, tend to be very high end, including dining, shore excursions, spas and enrichment activities. •Small ships trend toward a truly all-inclusive fare •Smaller dining and shared areas lend themselves lively conversations and closer relationships with fellow passengers. •Itineraries tend to be 10 days or longer
Example S ships:
•Princess Cruises: Pacific Princess •Crystal Cruises: Crystal Symphony •Regent Seven Seas Cruises: Seven Seas Mariner, Seven Seas Voyager, Seven Seas Explorer •Oceania Cruises: Oceania Insignia, Oceania Nautica, Oceania Regatta, Oceania Sirena, Oceania Marina •Silversea Cruises: Silver Muse, Silver Moon •Azamara Club Cruises: Azamara Journey, Azamara Quest, Azamara Pursuit •Costa Cruises: Costa Voyager •Viking Ocean Cruises: Viking Star, Viking Sea, Viking Sky, Viking Sun, Viking Orion, Viking Jupiter •Seabourn: Seabourn Encore, Seabourn Ovation
Extra Small Ships (XS) – 201-499 passengers
Very small ships offer a private, exclusive ambiance, along with personalized service and the advantage of being able to port almost anywhere. Passengers get a feel for the water and experience destinations in a very close-up, personal way.
Some benefits of XS ships:
•The most important benefit of small ship cruising is an immersive experience in the destination. Very small ships allow an in-depth exploration of nature, culture, history and learning not possible on larger ships. •Passengers tend to be a well-traveled, worldly crowd who enjoy the pursuit of education and exploration of the destinations they visit •Very personal attention from the crew; with luxury cruises this translates to personal attendants that see to your every need •More solitude and the opportunity to relax and pursue your own interests •Seating is usually open, with no set tables
Example XS ships:

Millennial Adventure-Seekers Move up to Luxury Cruises
It seems that luxury cruising isn’t just for boomers anymore. Millennials and Generation Xers are discovering the value, the ability to personalize “just for me” cruise experiences, and the opportunity to venture to far-flung points across the globe in the lap of luxury.
In fact, millennials are seeking out luxury cruises at a record pace, with almost a quarter of those surveyed having sailed on a luxury cruise line within the past three years, according to Cruise Lines International Association’s 2018 Cruise Travel Report. What’s more, Cruise Planners, an American Express travel representative, posted an increase of 46 percent in luxury sales and a 61 percent increase in river cruise sales in 2018 over 2017, thanks in part to millennial passengers.
Among the most popular cruise lines are premier luxury lines like Seabourn, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas Hapag-Lloyd and Crystal Cruises, several of which boast unique offerings, including concierge services equipped to make the unexpected happen. Case in point: an off-ship excursion to an Elton John concert arranged almost at the last moment by a Seabourn concierge for one passenger.
New-to-cruise guests often seek out spacious suites, which are sometimes in short supply, and boutique luxury experiences. Azamara Club Cruises, which recently debuted its third ship, the Azamara Pursuit, offers a wide array of destination voyages. Oceania is known for its culinary excellence as well as its destination-focused itineraries, and Viking Cruises, not historically known for opulence, recently introduced Viking Orion, a new vessel featuring an ultra-sleek Scandinavian interior.
As more millennials clamor for shipboard adventure–active experiences with in-depth exploration–small-ship luxury lines like Windstar, SeaDream Yacht Club, and Ponant offer voyages to far-flung destinations such as the Northeast Passage, Antarctica, remote islands in the South Pacific, The Kimberley in Australia, the Indian Ocean region, exotic African ports, and the Galapagos Islands.
Not surprisingly, younger luxury cruise guests want ships to be environmentally responsible. They ask about recycling, whether plastic straws are still in use, and what the lines give back to save the seas and the destinations they visit–and cruise lines are stepping up their efforts to comply.

13 New Ocean Cruise Ships in 2018
01 of 13
Cruises to Book in 2018
Scenic Cruises
The cruise industry launches 13 new ocean-going ships in 2018—most from familiar cruise lines—with berths for over 31,000 passengers. This year brings new ships ranging in size from about 200 guests to over 5,200. Some are expedition ships that take guests to exotic locales around the world, others are luxury or mainstream contemporary ships with dozens of restaurants, bars, and entertainment options.
If you want to ride a go-kart on the top deck of a ship, stay in a two-deck family suite with a private slide that takes you from the bedroom to the living room, or have fun in a huge water park at sea, then one of the large ships can deliver these experiences. Or, if you want to ride in a helicopter or submarine, sail through the Northwest Passage or explore Antarctica, one of the expedition ships can deliver those experiences. Finally, if you want to experience a luxury ship with outstanding food and service, there's a new ship for you, too. Of course, all the ships can deliver what travelers most love about cruise ships—the opportunity to explore all seven continents, see amazing sights at sea, and relax on the deck with a cold drink and a good book.
Here are the new ships to know in 2018, listed in launch order between March and December 2018.

Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line
Sailing from Barcelona on March 31, the 230,000-ton, 5,200-guest Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas is 2018’s first new ocean-going cruise ship and the biggest ship launched during the year. She is the fourth Oasis-class ship for Royal Caribbean, joining her sister ships the Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, and Harmony of the Seas. Those who have sailed on any of these three ships will find many similarities like the seven-neighborhood design, varied accommodations, multiple dining venues, and non-stop activities and entertainment.
The most innovative new type of accommodation is the Ultimate Family Suite, which includes a slide from the kid’s only bedroom down to the living room below; a floor-to-ceiling LEGO wall, and an air-hockey table. And, that’s not all. A separate 3D movie theater-style TV room, complete with popcorn machine and a library of video games will keep the whole family entertained. The suite even has a 212-square foot wrap-around balcony with a bumper pool table, climbing experience, and whirlpool.
It’s not surprising that the Symphony of the Seas has some new dining venues, including Hooked Seafood, which (of course) features fresh seafood; Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, where guests can dine while watching their favorite sports on video screens or playing arcade games; or satisfy the quest for Mexican cuisine at El Loco Fresh.
The Broadway hit Hairspray is featured in the ship's theater, continuing the tradition of other Royal Caribbean ships with other Broadway shows on their stages. Another new show is Flight, which traces the evolution of flying from the past to the future. Those who like more active pursuits can play Laser Tag, experience the onboard water park along with its own Ultimate Abyss, ride a wave on the Flowrider, climb the Rockwall, or go ice skating.
The Symphony of the Seas spends her first spring, summer, and fall in the Mediterranean, primarily sailing 7-day cruises from either Barcelona or Rome. The new ship sails to her Caribbean home port of Miami on October 28 from Barcelona, and sails 7-day eastern and western Caribbean itineraries through the winter of 2019.

Carnival Horizon
Carnival Cruise Line
The 133,500-ton, 3,954-guest Carnival Horizon joins her sister ship the Carnival Vista and the rest of the Carnival fleet in early April 2018.
The Carnival Horizon offers many of the hugely popular indoor and outdoor dining, bar, entertainment and activity options available on the Carnival Vista including SkyRide, the IMAX Theatre, WaterWorks aqua park, Seuss at Sea program in partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, and the Alchemy Bar.
The ship has dozens of diverse dining venues with menus from around the world. New additions found on the Carnival Horizon include Carnival’s first Japanese Teppanyaki Restaurant, named Bonsai Teppanyaki. The chefs create tantalizing Asian dishes on custom-built stations that form the center of the venue’s two eight-seat tables. Another new dining venue is the world’s first Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse/Brewhouse, named for celebrity chef and Carnival partner Guy Fieri. Guests can enjoy a meal along with exclusive microbrews that are actually brewed at sea.
In addition, Carnival Horizon offers a wide range of accommodation categories, including Havana staterooms and suites with exclusive daytime access to a Cuban-themed bar and pool, extra-roomy Family Harbor cabins, and spa cabins with exclusive privileges at the luxurious Cloud 9 Spa.
After her maiden voyage on April 2 in Barcelona, the Carnival Horizon sails the Mediterranean four times round-trip from Barcelona before crossing the Atlantic to New York City in early May. The new Carnival ship spends her first summer sailing round-trip from New York City to either Bermuda or the Caribbean. In late September, the Carnival Horizon moves to her home port of Miami, where she sails 6- and 8-day cruises to the Caribbean.

Norwegian Bliss
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship, Norwegian Bliss, debuts in London on April 21, 2018. The new ship immediately crosses the Atlantic to Miami, sails through the Panama Canal, and spends her first summer in Alaska. At the end of the Alaska season in September, the Norwegian Bliss repositions to Los Angeles for a series of cruises to the Mexican Riviera before heading back to Miami via the Panama Canal. She finishes her first year of service sailing the Caribbean from her home port of Miami.
The 167,800-ton, 4,004-guest Norwegian Bliss is a sister ship to the Norwegian Escape in the Breakaway Plus Class and features lots of fun onboard activities for cruise travelers. Like other Norwegian Cruise Line ships, the Bliss is adorned with amazing hull art, this time a pod of whales, which is very appropriate for her Alaska destinations. Another new feature appropriate for Alaska is the large observation lounge, which is located at the front of the ship, with the same views as the navigation bridge.
Those who have sailed on the Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Breakaway, or Norwegian Getaway will find many familiar dining venues with choices from around the world. All the dining is Freestyle, and guests will need to consider the starting times of the shows when planning their time to eat dinner.
The most exclusive accommodations are found in The Haven, which features suites, along with their own private dining, lounge, pool, outdoor deck, and concierge. It’s really a ship-within-a-ship. Those with a smaller budget will find all sorts of different cabins, and solo travelers will appreciate the 59 solo cabins.
Other than the hull art, the most distinctive outdoor feature on the Norwegian Bliss is its race track on the top deck. This is the largest go-kart racetrack at sea and will fun for kids and adults. The ship also has a large water park, ropes course, and plenty of deck chairs. The 60’s musical, Jersey Boys, is as popular at sea as on land, and the ship has a new show with an interesting title, Happy Hour Prohibition—The Musical.

Seabourn Ovation
Seabourn Cruises
Seabourn Cruises launches its fifth luxury ship in early May 2018. Called the Seabourn Ovation, the new ship is very similar to the Seabourn Encore christened in January 2017.
Like its sister ship the Seabourn Encore, Seabourn Ovation is being fashioned by Adam D. Tihany with contemporary interiors, modern design elements, and innovations consistent with Seabourn's reputation for understated elegance.
In order to ensure excellent service for its guests, the 40,350-ton ship has a high ratio of space per guest, which means it never seems crowded or hurried. The 600 guests will all stay in suites, each with a private veranda, living area, and walk-in closet.
The Seabourn Ovation will also feature exceptional dining opportunities, including The Grill by Thomas Keller, reminiscent of a classic American restaurant from the 50's and 60's. Exclusive to Seabourn, The Grill is a unique culinary concept for Chef Keller.
Following the ship's delivery, the Seabourn Ovation will embark on an 11-day inaugural voyage departing from Venice and sailing to Barcelona. The ship will spend most of her maiden season cruising the waters of Northern Europe, Norwegian fjords, and the British Isles. In the fall of 2018, the ship sails through the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal to Asia, where she will spend the winter of 2018-2019, primarily sailing between Hong Kong and Singapore on 14-day voyages.

MSC Seaview
MSC Cruises
MSC Cruises launches the 154,000-ton, 5,179-guest MSC Seaview in June 2018, just six months after her identical sister ship the MSC Seaside was officially named in Miami. Although the sister’s design is perfect for sun and warm-weather cruises, the twins have different homeports. Although the MSC Seaside currently cruises the Caribbean year-round from Miami, the MSC Seaview sails the Mediterranean most of her first year in service and spends her first winter in South America. The MSC Seaview has three Mediterranean homeports: Genoa, Marseille and Barcelona, and the new ship docks at well-known destinations like Naples, Messina, and Valetta.
Cabins in the ship's unique aft overlook a pool situated on a skirt area, which adds more outdoor deck space to the new ship. The MSC Seaview also has a 360-degree wraparound promenade with glass railings that run completely around the ship. The ship's spectacular interior design gives it an open, airy look.
Although the MSC Seaview is a new design, the company has retained its popular MSC Yacht Club, an exclusive area of suites, a lounge with all-inclusive drinks, private dining area, and 24-hour butler service.
Since the MSC Seaview is an Italian ship, guests shouldn’t be surprised to find many dishes with an Italian or Mediterranean flair on the menus at the various dining venues. Like other MSC ships, the MSC Seaview even has an Eataly Restaurant.

Le Lapérouse and Le Champlain of Ponant Cruises
Ponant Cruises
French cruise line Ponant Cruises launches two new 180-guest expedition ships in 2018–Le Lapérouse (June 2018) and Le Champlain (September 2018). These two expedition ships are smaller than the company's more traditional yacht-like ships (e.g. Le Boreal) that carry 264 guests but have many of the same contemporary luxury touches.
One major difference between the Ponant expedition ships and its larger yachts is the open deck at the stern that provides easy access to the marine equipment and doubles as a landing platform. Another difference that guests will love is the new Blue Eye Lounge. This underwater lounge is located within the hull beneath the water line. The lounge has underwater cameras and microphones capturing the sights and sounds under the sea. Guests will be able to see dolphins frolicking in the ship's wake and any other underwater action.
Both ships have fortified hulls for ice-water cruising and will explore remote destinations around the world. Le Lapérouse spends her maiden year with cruises to the Arctic, Mediterranean, Asia, Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. Le Champlain will visit Europe, North and South America, the Arctic, and Central America during her first season. Both ships will often stopover at unique, off-the-beaten-path ports of call inaccessible to larger ships.
Ponant plans to launch two more expedition ships like these two in 2019. Isn't that great news for those of us who love small ship cruising!

Viking Orion
Viking Cruises
The Viking Orion is the fifth ocean-going ship in the Viking fleet, all launched in the past three years. Like its four sister ships (Viking Sea, Viking Star, Viking Sun, and Viking Sky), this ship carries 930 guests, so is smaller than most of the other new ships launched in 2018. Although Viking has been in the river cruise business for many years, its plunge into the world of ocean cruising has been even more successful than anyone dreamed. The ships have won many awards, and guests love the almost-all-inclusive fares that include drinks at lunch and dinner and one shore excursion at each port of call.
The many cruise travelers who have fallen in love with Viking’s other ships will feel like they are returning home since the Viking Orion is almost identical in appearance and layout. The favorite public rooms like the Wintergarden, Nordic Spa, and Explorer’s Lounge begin welcoming guests in July 2018. The excellent restaurants like Manfredi’s and the World Café are in the same, familiar spots and serve guest favorites.
The Viking Orion spends her first year in service with exciting voyages in the Mediterranean, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The new ship even has a 92-day world cruise scheduled from Auckland to Vancouver starting in February 2019. After arriving in Vancouver in May 2019, the Viking Orion becomes Viking’s first ship to visit Alaska as she completes her maiden year with a series of Alaska cruises.

Scenic Eclipse
Scenic Cruises
Carrying only 228 guests, the Scenic Eclipse is the smallest new ocean ship launched in 2018. Scenic is an Australian tour company with luxury river cruise ships operating in Europe and Asia, but the Scenic Eclipse is the company’s first ocean-going ship. Many North Americans discovered Scenic Cruises during the past several years and found they loved the atmosphere and all-inclusive pricing.
The Scenic Eclipse may be an ultra-luxury, all-inclusive yacht, but its size is also perfect for expedition or discovery cruising. She will be sailing voyages to The Americas; Antarctica; Europe and the Mediterranean; and the Arctic and Norwegian Fjords in her first year of service.
The small ship has six onboard dining venues, none with an extra surcharge. The cuisines are varied, with contemporary fine dining from French, Pan Asian, and Italian cuisines. (And, of course, there's a good steak.) Guests can enjoy casual al-fresco dining on the Pool Deck or in the Ocean Cafe Lounge.
All the elegant cabins on the ship have a veranda and range in size from the spacious 344 square-foot Verandah Suites to the over-the-top 2,500-square-foot, two-bedroom Owner’s Penthouse Suite.
The common areas include a 5,000-square-foot spa, so guests can relax after a day exploring exotic destinations. The Scenic Eclipse has the highest ice-rated hull, custom built Zodiacs, two onboard helicopters, and a seven-seat submarine, all of which expand its experiences and itineraries.

AIDAnova
AIDA Cruises
German cruise line AIDA, which is part of the Carnival Corporation family, adds the AIDAnova to its fleet in the fall of 2018. This 5200-passenger vessel is noteworthy as the world’s first environmentally-friendly Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) powered large mainstream cruise ship.
AIDA is not well-known to most English-speaking cruise travelers, but anyone who sees the signature bright-red lips that grace the bow will certainly recognize every other AIDA cruise ship on future voyages. The vibrant lips are a perfect accompaniment to its mostly young, active, German-speaking guests and their families.

Hurtigruten Roald Amundsen
Hurtigruten
When Hurtigruten launches the 530-guest Roald Amundsen in October 2018, she will be the first of two new hybrid expedition ships for this Norwegian line that has been sailing in Arctic waters for over 120 years. The hybrid engines cut emissions, use less fuel, and are environmentally sustainable.
The new Hurtigruten ship is well-suited for cold weather cruising, with a hull strengthened to sail in icy waters and many indoor viewing areas with large windows. However, the Roald Amundsen also has an outdoor pool, hot tubs, and a pool bar. Most guests sailing into the Arctic or Antarctic regions take along appropriate clothing, so many prefer to watch the magnificent scenery from the outdoor decks to get the full experience.
Hurtigruten’s Roald Amundsen has several different categories of cabins and suites. All the cabins are on the outside of the ship. Some of the cabins have a kettle and tea/coffee provided. All the cabins have televisions that broadcast views from the bridge so guests who are relaxing in their cabins can run outside to take photos when wildlife magically appear.
The new ship has three dining venues, with menus focused on local dishes and destinations. (No, you won’t find penguin or leopard seal on the Antarctic menus!)
The Roald Amundsen’s maiden voyage in late October sails from Valparaiso to Patagonia, the Chilean fjords, Cape Horn, and Antarctica. After the Antarctic cruising season is over, the ship sails along the west coast of South America, through the Panama Canal and the Caribbean to southern Europe on a series of fascinating itineraries. She then turns north for Norway and spends the summer and fall of 2018 primarily sailing in Arctic waters.

Holland America Nieuw Statendam
Holland America Line
The 2,860-guest Nieuw Statendam, which has her maiden voyage on December 5, 2018. is the second Pinnacle Class ship for Holland America Line, joining the Koningsdam, which launched in April 2016. A third Pinnacle Class ship will set sail for the cruise line in 2021. The design of the 99,500-ton ship is similar to Koningsdam, but the Nieuw Statendam has exclusive public spaces and its own style created by leading hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany and designer and architect Bjorn Storbraaten. The ship features all the hallmarks of Pinnacle-class design: grand light-filled spaces; visual drama; and sumptuous interiors inspired by the fluid curves of musical instruments. The first Statendam sailed for Holland America Line in 1898, and this is the sixth Holland America Line’s ship to carry the name.
The Nieuw Statendam has a busy first year, with many different itineraries. She crosses the Atlantic from Rome to Fort Lauderdale to spend her first winter season sailing the Caribbean. She then returns to Europe in April of 2019 to sail the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and Norway, before moving back to Fort Lauderdale in late October for another Caribbean cruising season.

Celebrity Edge
Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruise Line’s 2,918-guest Celebrity Edge is the last cruise ship debuting in 2018. She has her maiden voyage on December 16 from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean. This ship is a new class for Celebrity and has many innovative features that cruise travelers will appreciate and enjoy.
One of the innovative design elements is Eden, which is almost 12,000 square feet of space that is utilized both in the daytime and the evening. Like other venues on the Celebrity Edge, it has an outward-facing focus, with huge windows spanning its three decks of space.
The Magic Carpet is the most-talked-about feature on the Celebrity Edge. The company considers this the highlight of the ship’s outward-facing vision. The Magic Carpet is the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform that reaches heights of 13 decks above sea level, so guests can soar over the open ocean while enjoying the view, sampling a bar drink, or enjoying a musical performance.
Travelers will love the Edge Staterooms with Infinite Verandas. As seen on some river ships, these accommodations have a balcony that doubles as a sunroom, which makes the cabin larger when guests aren’t using the balcony.
The Celebrity Edge spends her first season in the Caribbean, sailing round-trip from Fort Lauderdale to ports of call in both the eastern and western Caribbean. The ship moves to the Mediterranean for the spring and summer cruise season before returning to Fort Lauderdale in November 2019.
