Vlogs are the polarizing issue of today. It’s either you’re about them and see them as progression of media or you look at them as some sort scorn, maybe even a byproduct of today’s narcissistic culture. Regardless it’s one of those things the minority vocal internet community has taken issue with.
If you know anything about this site. You know that’s I’m all about artistic merit in BMX. Some form of expression that comes through whether it’s editing, photographs, riding, or whatever this culture creates. Vlogs are almost always terribly filmed, terribly edited, there is very little thought or process that it undergoes compared to more traditional forms like DVD’s or even a lot of web videos. In a way that is kind of the attraction in them though. It’s a certain human element that a lot of over produced videos lack.
To shoot handheld in even modern cinema standard is something that’s common. Take the Oscar winning movie The Revenant for example. Most of it was filmed ‘handheld’. Which usually means there is some type of contraption or was edited in post to emulate someone just holding a camera. This movie with millions of dollars in budget, that has Leo, an 3 time winning cinematographer, takes the most basic form of shooting and uses it with reason. Which is that handheld shots give a human feeling into films. While glidecams, cranes, and all stabilizers will often make things feel more distant.
I’m not saying that these producers of vlogs understand that aspect and are purposefully utilizing it. They most definitely aren’t but it’s one of those happy mistakes that create an effect when coupled with vlogs makes for a better feature. Take all bro cam angles and dirty lenses a lot of the Animal videos had. It creates a more grittier, crustier atmosphere that only further helps sell the video. It’s something like that. Besides this medium can be churned out in almost a weekly basis.
There is something very human about vlogs. A lot of features today I think are overproduced and lack a sense of groundedness, where BMX certainly thrives. Cranes and gimbals are most of the time out of step with what’s capable for the average rider, a vlog definitely not. I think that’s definitely appeal of them. Plus rarely do they take themselves too seriously. A standout section can be 3 minutes of someone’s highlights for 4 years or so while vlogs are just everyday struggles and thoughts. I think that’s why they’re are so popular with the younger crowded. Most of those kids aren’t at a point in life where they take anything too serious and the problem is that a lot of older BMX takes itself too seriously. Metal pegs vs. plastic. Ride everything vs. only street. All these dumb “this is cool, this is wack” issues which BMX seems to have constant rotation. For such a self proclaimed progressive place a lot of is actually quite conservative.
The young crowd aren’t dumb, they know what they want from ever changing world. It’s almost hypocritical cause so many of vlog naysayers will use new age platforms like Instagram which are more or less vlogs themselves. Platforms that destroyed the greater print media that we all happily accept cause the cool kids think its cool so it must be cool. What are vlogs than more or less just an extension of social media, the same thing a lot of these vlog haters utilize to an obsessive extent. This type of hypocrisy strangely thrives in BMX and counter culture in general though. Not saying all vlogs are great. Some are mind numbingly boring, others are so narcissistic it’s insufferable but they say 10% of whatever is good so I’m thinking that applies to vlogs too.
Yea I wrote about vlogs before but hey it’s mad interesting and I think I have a few new points. It’s a new(old) medium in the making.

*** I'm so thankful for Conner!!! Really enjoying these videos from the USA!!! Seem they are really enjoying themselves!!! I'd like to see them get a day off though!!! Seems they've been in a different city/state/radio station every day for the past week!!! It would be nice if they could just relax for a whole 24 hours!!! James wanted to go visit Scotty Cranmer (BMXer) today, but didn't get too!!! And Scotty's had a rough 2 months, so he could use a new visitor!!! Also, I want to point out how happy I am to see Conner being so confident!!! I know he's sorta shy, so it's nice to see him feeling so comfortable in front of the camera!!!

just happened to find this article about scotty’s take on safer riding, after knowing what happened to him and now his current state due to that horrible accident he had its pretty bitter sweet to read this dec 2015 article that covered pretty much everything he feared about a bad head injury and having one ironically happen to him 8 months later.
.
even these quotes:  “Now, I'll never ride without it” (referring to a full face helmet) and “I think it would be really selfish of me to think that I am invincible,” he said when asked about his helmet. “I want to be able to play my piano and guitar and just want to live a normal life. If I have to wear a helmet that is not as cool looking as the rest of the guys, it’s worth it.”
.
flash forward to the present time and knowing that when he had his accident he was not wearing a full face helmet. would it had prevented the injuries he sustained? would it had made any difference? i cant help but think of these questions as i follow his recovery. its just so surreal to find this article now and read it. my heart goes out to him and i hope he regains more than 10% of mobility one day. i hope he sumhow has a miracle and he gets feeling back in his legs again, i hope for alot of things for him but i guess the main thing is to remember he had a great run, he was xgames champ, he had a thriving youtube vlog channel, its not like it never happened for him. when u think of it, we all live the life we’re meant to live and once a tragedy happens we’ve got to accept and adjust to whatever changes we r forced to endure.
.
no one is invincible and no one really realizes that until sumthing happens to them that removes so many aspects of their lives that they took for granted. u can b as calculated as u can with the risks u plan to take doing anything u desire, but the unexpected always has other plans for u.
.
enjoy every moment to the fullest cos it can b taken away in the blink of an eye
