One of the most enduring questions in educational research is how and sometimes even whether, the resources provided to schools relate to student achievement. This question has been summarized into the seemingly simple question Does money matter to student outcomes A close examination of the historical origins of this question as well as recent studies attempting to examine the influence of resources on student achievement highlights the tension between the competing priorities of efficiency and equity in Indian schooling. Kay's Anatomy by  Adam Kay.  

Aimed at children aged 8+, this book written by a doctor-turned-comedy-writer, Adam Kay, is funny, packed with facts as he tells the reader, in an honest way, about the human body and all its amazing weirdness.  

Kay covers everything including: 

*skin (I learnt why the skin on my palms and soles of my feet is different to the rest of my skin).  

*heart.  

*lungs.  

* the digestive system (so many muscle movements involved in eating and talking).  

*the amazing hidden wonder that is the brain.  

* puberty and reproduction.  

*genes and cells  

* infections and virus prevention .  

*muscles.  

*bone structure.  

*organs such as kidneys, liver, spleen and many others.  

It really does amaze me how many organs are packed away under the skin 

With lots of facts (some gross about eyelash micro creatures), being an ex-doctor, he talks openly about  puke, poo, farts and snot, making it very amusing and accessible to kids.  

One thing that struck me that was a great lesson we all have parts of us we’d like to change, even our heroes do.  But our body is our own. It’s what makes us unique and beautiful    

I really enjoyed how he normalised things like epilepsy, ADHD, autism, sight loss, hearing loss,  dementia and many other conditions with age appropriate explanations. The only slightly disappointing bit was about mitochondria. Adam called it 'the boring old battery.' I have had a word with him since, as he didn't comprehend the importance of the mighty mitochondria. Hopefully, if a revised version is published, it'll include how, just like a device needs regular charging to ensure all of the apps function, your mitochondria produce the energy for your organs to function.  

Some people aren't born with enough mitochondria, which can cause issues affecting their abilities and cognitive function. Some people affected by mitochondrial disease may use a wheelchair, eat via a peg, or they may not as mito affects everyone differently. So yes, those mitochondria are pretty vital to sustaining life.   

This is a great resource book for all ages. I learnt lots. I hope it inspires a new generation of medics.  

Highly Recommend.
