Peace in Afghanistan is a prerequisite for peace in Pakistan : COAS Qamar Bajwa

The Chief of Staff of the Army, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, today discussed regional security problems with the German, Italian, Netherland and French ambassadors.

In an ISPR release, Ambassador Bernhard Stephan Schlagheck of Germany, Ambassador Andreas Ferrarese of Italy, Willem Wouter Plomp from the Netherlands and Yves Manville of France to the General Office, met with COAS.

The conference covered issues of mutual interest, regional security — especially the recent situation in Afghanistan — and bilateral EU collaboration.

With regard to the development of the Afghan situation, the COAS underlined that peace implies peace for Pakistan in Afghanistan.

The Chief of the Army stated that Pakistan has no preferences in the current war and Pakistan is only committed to ‘helping for peace and stability in Afghanistan.’

SACM DEPLORES OPPOSITION'S NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING

LAHORE, January 22:

Special Assistant to CM on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has regretted that PDM played its role in increasing the intensity of corona by holding gatherings.

In a statement on Friday, the SACM said 714 new cases were reported during the last 24 hours in Punjab. 16635 tests were also conducted and 25 others lost their lives during this period. The total number of corona patients has reached to 151603, she added.

While criticising the political role of the opposition parties, Dr Awan said that even the political jokes of the PDM leadership have lost attraction adding that their resignation snare has also failed to trap anything. Similarly, the long march call turned out to be a political burden, she added. Now, this political cabal is moving from pillar to post for face-saving but to no avail. In fact, the Maulana and his two disciples are deceiving each other through flop shows, she said. It is regrettable that the political thieves are blinded in their lust for power but their PDM stunt has failed to take off, she added.

The SACM expressed the satisfaction that Pakistan is led by a daunting leader while Punjab is managed by an honest and public friendly Chief Minister Usman Buzdar. This cabal has no value before true and patriotic leaders and there is no room for looters and thieves in the new Pakistan, she emphasised. The politics of honesty and public service will prevail, concluded the SACM.

FEDERAL MINISTER IJAZ SHAH CALLS ON CM

LAHORE, January 22:

Federal Minister for Narcotics Control Brig. (R) Ijaz Shah called on Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar at his office on Friday and discussed matters of mutual interests. Both agreed to adopt collective measures to overcome the menace of the drugs trade and further decided that the federal, as well as the Punjab governments, will launch a joint crackdown against drug peddlers.

The CM emphasised that the elements involved in narcotics trade will be strictly curbed and assured that the police, excise and other departments will provide every assistance to the anti narcotics force. The drug traffickers are the enemy of the whole humanity and indiscriminate crackdown will be continued against them, the CM affirmed. Jail is the best place for those selling drugs outside educational institutions and action will be continued against them, he further said. Every segment of society should play its role in the war against narcotics because the country is facing many challenges and some elements are targeting institutions under a specific agenda. The propaganda against institutions is regrettable and the PTI government will continue to side with the national institutions, the CM reiterated.

Ijaz Shah stated that the elements involved in the business of narcotics do not deserve any leniency and added that they will be brought under the net of the law in collaboration with the Punjab government. Joint action will be initiated against drug peddlers, he said and asserted that there is no logic in the institution's bashing. The opposition's specific agenda of maligning the institutions has been fully exposed as the opposition parties are bent upon besmirching the country with their anti-state narrative, he further said.

GERMAN AMBASSADOR CALLS ON CM PUNJAB

LAHORE, January 22:

Ambassador of Germany Mr Bernhard Stephan Schlagheck called on Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar at his office on Friday and discussed different matters including the expansion of bilateral cooperation between Germany and Punjab.

Talking on the occasion, CM Usman Buzdar stated that solid steps will be taken to further promote relations as Germany is the best partner of Pakistan. The government will take advantage of German expertise to develop the automobile industry, IT, health and social sector on modern lines. Punjab will take a lead for promotion of cooperation in different sectors as different facilities are provided to the investors under one roof, he added.

The CM asked the German investors to take benefit of tremendous investment opportunities as special incentives were being provided for foreign investment. All the necessary facilities are provided under one roof in special economic zones being established in different districts, he added. Similarly, the CM further said the construction sector has a lot of potential and five cement factories have been issued NOCs while 12 more NOCs will be issued soon.

The chief minister emphasised that development of less developed areas has been focused and a special package has been given for backward areas of south Punjab. The establishment of the south Punjab secretariat is an important initiative as the development process has been brought to the doorstep of the common man. On the other side, the CM pointed out that the government is fully focused on the development of the agriculture sector and the latest technology will be utilised for enhancing cotton production. The government is working on developing new cottonseed and agricultural credit card scheme is in the offing for farmers. Every citizen will be given health coverage and this program will be completed in the current year, he added. The PTI government has given priority to improving good governance, service delivery and development of backward areas and the development journey is continuous despite impediments, he added.

German Ambassador said he is happy to visit Punjab and appreciated the CM’s vision for the development of backward areas. German investment companies are interested to invest in different sectors in Punjab and cooperation will be further expanded, he added.

German Ambassador Bernhard Schlagheck advocating the adoption of cycling habit in Pakistan said the practice has diversified health and financial advantages for individuals in particular and a country’s environment at large.

“The habit of cycling provides an excellent opportunity to clear mind and thoughts, besides its other healthy and nature friendly benefits” the envoy who is in love with cycling shared his feelings in an exclusive interview with state-run media Sunday.

He said the reasons behind advocating to build the bike-habit here in Pakistan was certainly his love for cycling and its long lasting positive impacts on humans’ lives and it can also drive green development on earth.

Bernhard said, “I think there is a lot to be gained from a good bike ride. It’s also environmental-friendly and zero-carbon emission transport as well as a great practical and almost cost-free mode of conveyance.

On a query to how we can establish a bike-culture in Pakistan, he said, “I’m always somewhat skeptical about notions like bike-culture. I do not really think we need a bike-culture in Pakistan, but an appreciation of what is already here – so that a bike is not merely considered as a minus to a motorbike or a car, but valuable in itself.” It also encourages strong human connectivity as people on automobiles do not interact with each other on roads, he added.

To another question whether cycling can offer a solution to urban transport and traffic chaos, the envoy said, it was a long term perspective but certainly reducing private fossil fuel driven transport within cities to contest constant traffic gridlocks and environmental hazards it must be one of the near term targets of contemporary urban planning.

“And cycling here has an ever bigger role to play, no doubt about that,” endorsing the idea he remarked.

While appreciating the weather and scenic beauty of the federal capital Islamabad, he said “ It is a wonderful city, having a lot to see that offers sufficient places to the people to engage themselves in activities like cycling, jogging, hiking and tracking on the beautiful Margalla Hills, especially during this natural calamity of coronvirus”.

The ambassador also gave some expert tips for cyclists in hot summer and said, long distance pedaling be avoided and short to moderate trips were recommended in full sun light. “Sufficient intakes of nutrients and fluids to the body before and after cycling was a must to avoid season’s wrath” he stressed.

Commenting on the riding conditions here for the cyclists, he said, “I can hardly speak for the rest of the country since I am cycling basically only in Islamabad. Here, I think, the conditions are sufficiently good though, as with most things, there may be room for improvement.”

It was pleasing to know, he said, that the ICT administration and the Commissioner’s office were engaged in setting up dedicated cycling lanes n Islamabad which was a promising and welcome development.

He also praised the Federal Government and Special Assistant to the prime minister Sayed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari for taking special interest in promoting environmental-friendly mobility models in Islamabad and elsewhere in Pakistan.

“This realisation and initiatives are certainly going to help enhance number of pedalers across the country” he hoped.

Replying to a question about how to motivate the people for cycling, the ambassador said, politicians had a particular responsibility here to create awareness among masses about the benefits of bicycling. The government and public administration’s hands should be strengthened to encourage people to adopt such activities for health reasons at least.

The envoy also pointed out limitation of using a bicycle as an official routine transportation mode, the idea pleaded in Pakistan’s social media and said, “If the President of Pakistan is receiving you for submitting Ambassadorial credentials, you would not appear at the President House on a bike, would you? There are also security aspects to be considered.

And courtesy and hygiene require you won’t enter Parliament or Ministries with sweating body. So, it’s a matter of prudent consideration.”

Bernhard also shared his pride-ride, his grandfather’s 80-year old bicycle, which he owns and said “Whenever possible I take my bike to go to Foreign Ministry, located not that far from the German Embassy. It’s always both a bit cumbersome and funny to convince the MFA guards to let me in, but we usually share a good laugh and they used to inquire about my bicycle which is indeed quite old, whether it is from Pakistan and where I bought it. In fact, it’s from Germany. I have been owning this treasure for almost 40 years and used it in Moscow, Rome, Africa, and now in Islamabad. I think it’s great piece to link with my biography and responsibilities here as German Ambassador to Pakistan.”

Nigeria is the future of not just Africa but of the whole world and mankind” German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Bernhard Schlagheck has said. Schlagheck said this when he received the delegation of “Follow the Money and Connected Development (CODE)” an NGO, in his office on Friday in Abuja. He said that Germany and Nigeria shared similarities in diverse areas, adding that Nigerians could contribute toward growth of their country through tracking governance processes to ensure accountability.

Schlagheck said, “there are developments in every society that must be tracked, to achieve that there is need for distinction of people to do such.

“Nigeria as the future of Africa is the future of the world of mankind that we can ask many important questions and of course this is also applicable in places like Germany, in Europe. “Although there are obstacles in development processes, Nigerians should strive to focus on cross fertilisation of good ideas to bring about meaningful growth in future.” He commended the delegation for their effort in tracking expenditure of public funds to promote accountability and transparency in governance process in the country.

Earlier, Mr Hamzat Lawal, Founder, Follow the Money and Chief Executive Officer of CODE, said that they were at the German Embassy to appreciate Schlagheck for his support to the organisation. He noted that the support by Schlagheck had helped young people learn best practices on modern methods to track public fund spending.

According to him, we were in Germany this year and won the SDGs awards under mobilise-category, despite the fact that we applied for our papers late. “Europe and U.S. are struggling with illegal migration because people from other parts of the world are tired of how governments are not ensuring that the services delivered are efficient. “We believe that by following the money, Nigeria will be more like Germany and we will not have to worry that people travel illegally, rather to explore such places and come back.” News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the high point of the event was the presentation of plaque to the German Ambassador.

Yam roots do not grow in Germany.

Creating a suitable environment in Nigeria would lead to a brain drain that would significantly accelerate development in Nigeria.
