#Scanlan can have some tentacles

Time for my next set of mechanic observations for the new tlovm episodes! My last post is here.
To reiterate, this is me taking a look at how they translated the tabletop mechanics to the screen!
I'm not adding absolutely everything, because noting every advantage or saving throw gets a little stale.
Episode 4:
First of all, Revivify of course. It was great seeing Pike chipping in as a nod to how Matts runs revival spells. I like that Kash carried it out by carving the runes, so I'll be keen to see what Pike's version is.
Classic Warlock spell, Summon Greater Demon (even if Zahra used an item for it) - except it succeeded on its charisma save and no longer had to be obedient.
Some Action Surges from Percy, shooting multiple times
Reckless attack from Grog - attacking powerfully at the demon but leaving himself wide open to get slapped by the tentacles.
Vex shooting multiple arrows at once: Ranger Extra Attack?
I would also like to think that Trinket not acting in this battle for ages is a nod to Laura forgetting Trinket is around sometimes.
They have combined Vax's Boots of Haste with the Deathwalker's Ward, which makes sense because a lot of its original abilities aren't very visual i.e. AC bonuses. Though we can see the AC bonuses we can see in how well he dodges those attacks.
And finally another Scrying, this time from Ripley and with an item.
Episode 5: Not a mechanics note but what an incredible moment for Marisha. Janet Varney, the voice of Korra from the avatar franchise playing her mother when Keyleth was so inspired by the avatar.
Dimension Door with Allura and Kima to grab the gang,
A few Guiding Bolts from Pike,
And of course a Cure Wounds,
Not sure if it's what they are going for in the show, but Wild Shaping into a Fire Elemental is SO cool for this moment, especially as a nod to the avatar state.
I'm wondering if the symbol Cerkonos draws on Keyleth's head is a reference to the Igni rune in Witcher?
Episode 6:
Produce Flame to keep them warm,
ASTRAL SEA?? IS IT??? ARE WE THERE??
I love that Scanlan gets Mythcarver and immediately loses it - sums up Sam never fucking using it pretty well.
And seeing Mythcarver fit the size of the bearer is a nice way of showing attunement.
The Plane Shift and rolling on the d100 to see how well you get the exact place, dropping Grog and the Gnome gang.
Anything I missed?

Critical Role: Final Words
Updated as of 9/15/2022, spoilers up to C3E34.
So given RECENT EVENTS, I thought it would be interesting to make a record of the "last words" of each Critical Role PC before their respective deaths, regardless of whether or not they were rezzed later on.
Obviously your mileage may vary here, since it can be hard to parse out what's said in and out of character, and it's possible I missed things as I was reading through the transcripts.
I'm only focusing on the main game here, as a note, so no Calamity.
Big thanks to https://kryogenix.org/crsearch/ for making searches a lot easier.
If there are words in brackets, that means those could also be final words, but I'm not sure if they count.
So let's get started! (Spoilers below!)
Grog's Death, C1E11, 3:33:33: Scanlan: Grog are you okay? Grog: Yeah. (scoffs) But a tickle. [No one told me he had a lightsaber.]
Vex's Death, C1E44, 4:21:10: Vex: I'm trying to-- Brother, I'm going to go look at the stuff that they're finding, okay? Be safe!
[Later on, she also said "All good, Kima!"]
Grog's Death, C1E50, 28:36: Grog: Yeah, I would not turn down some delicious boar.
Percy's Death, C1E68, 3:52:20: Percy: No matter what today, I forgive you, but I cannot let you leave.
Vex's Death, C1E80, 1:46:45: Vex: You don't got no wings anymore. Vax: She dead? Vex: No.
Scanlan's Death, C1E80, 1:54:22: Pike: Oh, sorry, Scanlan, I didn't see you there. Scanlan: Well, I'm behind a dragon, honey, it's okay.
Scanlan's Death, C1E83, 2:11:00: Scanlan: You so dumb, when thieves stole your horse, you chased them down and said, "You forgot the saddle!"
Percy's Death, C1E83, 1:27:19: Percy: She's down and vulnerable! Raishan: Not as down and not as vulnerable as you think. Percy: Oh, shit.
Vax's Death, C1E88, 4:22:00: Vax: [to Vex after she frees him from a Kraken tentacle] Love you!
Keyleth's Death, C1E97, 14:59: Keyleth: We're gods! [Marisha may have said this out of character, but Vex then said she heard Keyleth say this at 28:35, so it's canon now.]
Vex's Death, C1E102, 2:28:15: Vecna: Come, and be the next sacrifice for the new age. Vex: You're a dipshit!
Vax's Death, C1E102, 2:19:23: Vax: No one walks away. [Alternatively: Vex: *rolls a nat 20 on a con save* Vax: *unintelligible yells*]
Vax's Death, C1E112, 3:44:23: Vax: All right, fucknut, let's do this.
Vax's Death, C1E115, 1:40:12: Vax: How lucky I have been to have had all of you. How lucky, indeed. Thank you.
Vex's Death, C1 "Dalen's Closet," 2:03:50: Sylas: I've been thinking about this moment for so long, I planned so many elaborate ways to torture you and tear you apart and-- Vex: Tell us about them.
---------------------------------------
Molly's Death, C2E26, 3:57:23: Molly: [to Keg about an enemy] You got that one? [Alternatively: Molly: *spitting with blood*]
Caduceus's Death, C2E55, 58:30: Caduceus: Are we moving? [Unsure about this one since Tal doesn't RP talk a ton during combat, so this is from even BEFORE the break.]
Nott's Death, C2E83, 3:11:39: Nott: Teach me how to read and write. Just kidding, I'm very smart.
Fjord's Death, C2E98, 3:13:10: Fjord: Intruders!
Yasha's Death, C1E30, 4:03:00: Yasha: I am your champion. [This actually occurred in the episode BEFORE her death, which was episode 131. We're counting this since it was said before she failed her last death save, even though she was technically still up and moving.]
Jester's Death, C2E140, 2:22:55: Jester: Arty!
Caleb's Death, C2E140, 2:37:57: Caleb: You're killing her, you're killing her, you love her, you're killing her!
---------------------------------------
Bertrand's Death, C3E3, 4:08:02: Bertrand: Lieve'tel...
Orym's Death, C3E33, 3:14:45: Otohan: We've met before. Orym: Yeah.
Fearne's Death, C3E33, 3:32:15: Fearne: Boy... that was a hell of a run.
Laudna’s Death, C3E33, 3:29:19:
Laudna: We’ve seen the leylines. I know where they’re converging.
[Another instance of last words spoken the episode BEFORE she actually died.]

So I promised my n00b reactions...
Second Episode Drop!
Episode 4
* Holy crap. EVEN AFTER ALL THAT, Allura is giving them the benefit of the doubt. That is one kind lady. Of course, ‘the vampires’ side of the story’ isn’t a good thing.
* The book has to be soaked though?
* Guess not.
* Okay. The middle finger battle is cute.
* YEAH BACKSTORY TIME. Yes, Percy, whatever you are, they just needed to know who to kill. And possibly how. How would be very good.
* Everlight - curse? forsaken by the divine? Just a broken holy symbol?
* aaand suddenly I’m hoping the half elves aren’t going to try to break out WHILE the undead are trying to break in.
* This is so not the time to be without your cleric, guys.
* I don’t know what the fuck those things are but I’m really glad Keyleth can apparently create miniature suns.
* Damn. They really are one lucky bunch of adventurers.
* no, you need a cleric. She’s a great druid, but you need a god when you’re fighting shit like vampires.
Episode 5
Well. THEY got into trouble fast.
* You fuckwits thought you’d steal from a MAGIC SHOP? Man. Every time I think you’re SMARTER than a peanut.
* You guys owe Gilmore way, way more than you could possibly repay.
* Didn’t I see that in one of the Blade movies? Pretty sure I saw a pomeranian with a mouth like that.
* GodDAMN, Keyleth.
* ....you just tentacle-mouthfucked the bard, didn’t you. You did. And he liked it. Because of course he did.
* Ah. A dark version of the Everlight amulet. Gives me some idea what happened to Pike, at least.
* Awwww. Ship ahoy.
* Scanlan winning the monster stories with a sex story is ...par.
* Vex, are you upset that Vax likes a girl? You are. Wow. And here I thought your brother wasn’t a virgin.
* Do you honestly think something like the ‘sun tree’ wasn’t cut down by vampire lords? REally?
* They hung...people to substitute for you, as a kind of organic effigy thing? That’s weirdly artistic. I’m inclined to assume it’s some kind of spell, on that basis alone.
Episode 6
* There’s a Matt Mercer clone among the rebels. He’s definitely a - yep. Red shirt. Wow. Didn’t even last a whole typed sentence.
* “Little Percival, what have you become?” GOOD QUESTION, LADY.
* Druid + important dead tree = impending plot point...
* “Those were all bad ideas and you should all feel bad.” YES.
* I love how often this Uber Party of Awesome gets stymied by doors.
* Sometimes, you can just SEE the DM cutting the party some slack. Even if it is with a pisspot.
* SHIT. The names on Percy’s gun are not just for show? That’s...probably not good.
* Okay. No. When Percy’s glasses do the glow-in-the-dark-mirror thing WHAT ARE YOU? SERIOUSLY?
* Percy, the correct expression when told your sister lives is not “oh crap”.
* Oh. I guess it is.

i found some vox machina ficlets hanging out in my google drive and i’m never going to write the others (it was meant to be an exercise to get me to write more and i’m just not interested in that lol) so i’m tossing them up on here!
dialogue prompts from this post
Vax- “You found it on the beach? You know, when most people take a walk on the beach, they pick up seashells.”
“You found it on the beach? You know, when most people take a walk on the beach, they pick up seashells,” Vax deadpanned, staring at the horrifying corpse in front of them. When they’d followed the trail to a coastal town, he’d sort of hoped they could relax a little. He’d never really had a chance to spend a day at the beach, but he was pretty sure you weren’t supposed to fight deadly tentacle monsters.
Percy shrugged. “I was poking around, exploring, and something poked back. Besides, seashells are awfully ordinary as mementos.”
Wiping his hand on his pants, Scanlan said, “This seems pretty tacky to me, along with sticky, and disgusting… I could keep going,” he offered. They shook their heads. Vax took a moment to look over at his sister, and found her already settling back down against Trinket. Sometimes, he marvelled at how casual she could be. They’d just been surprised by a huge beast trying to-eat them, he supposed, but really who knew-and she’d been quick on the draw as ever, firing off arrows without even standing all the way up, and here she was, looking like she was about to fall asleep.
An idea sprang to mind. “Scanlan,” Vax whispered, moving a little closer to the gnome. “Would you help me play a prank on my sister?”
Before Scanlan could answer, a loud voice shouted, “Did we miss anything?” Vax turned to see Grog clomping his way back to them, far less impressive than usual, given that he seemed to be sliding in the sand. Pike was perched on his shoulders, wobbling to keep her balance, with an occasional hand from Keyleth, who was walking softly beside them.
Vax looked back at the tentacle monster corpse, and then shared a look with Percy and Scanlan. “Absolutely nothing,” he called back.
Grog- “Put the chicken down.”
Not much surprised Grog Strongjaw. Sure, sometimes he missed things that everyone else saw, and maybe sometimes they were a little important, but the big stuff? He was great at not being surprised when it counted. So walking into the dining room in the mansion to see Keyleth and one of Scanlan’s servants fighting over a full, cooked chicken was really fucking weird.
“Put the chicken down,” he said, striding toward them. Keyleth froze when he said it, and turned her head slowly to look at Grog. She didn’t let go of the chicken.
“Uh, hey, Grog, fancy seeing you here,” she said brightly. He didn’t understand why she said half the things she did, so he ignored it. The servant didn’t appear to have let go of the chicken either, which was also weird, since he was pretty sure Scanlan had said they had to listen to anyone in Vox Machina giving them orders. Maybe he had to be more specific, he thought.
“Servant,” Grog said, in his best commanding voice, “unhand that chicken.” It was pretty hard to see the servant’s eyes, being all see-through, but he swore it rolled his eyes at him. “Isn’t that supposed to work?” he asked Keyleth.
“I think it probably won’t listen if your orders conflict with someone else’s. Like Scanlan’s,” she added, and glared at the servant. It tugged on the chicken, and Keyleth barely avoided falling over. Grog chuckled.
“Wait, but why did Scanlan tell it not to let go of this chicken? Hang on, what do you want with the chicken? What’s so great about this chicken?”
Keyleth sighed. “I think Scanlan told them not to give me any chicken. I… may have tried to play a prank on him yesterday?” she said, not really looking at Grog. “He, um, said it was ‘the worst excuse for a prank he’d ever seen’ and he was insulted, and… I think this is him trying to teach me what a good prank is.”
Grog laughed. “Okay, but it’s pretty good. You’re playing tug-of-war! With a chicken! It looks pretty stupid.” Keyleth looked a little sad, but she’d get over it. Still, maybe he could help. “Here,” he said, and grabbed the chicken out of their combined hands. “Ta-dah, now you don’t have to worry about it. How about you go tell Scanlan, ‘haha, very funny, great prank,’ he gives up, and I get to eat this chicken. Sound good?”
She looked a little skeptical, but Keyleth sighed again, and said, “Thanks, Grog. Good idea.” Of course it was, he thought. Why didn’t they all see that he was clearly the most logical one in the group? Shrugging, Grog left the kitchen again, and went to settle down for a nice midnight snack.
Scanlan- “I don’t really think of myself as a thief…”
“You really make a shit thief, you know,” Vax said, materializing out of nowhere as he was annoyingly prone to doing. Scanlan resisted the urge to jump.
“I don’t really think of myself as a thief… more of a liberator,” he explained, turning the gem over in his hands. What if it did something really cool? Percy would probably want to examine it, he thought scornfully. As if he knew anything about magic.
“Well, that’s your first problem, there,” Vax replied. He seemed cheerful, or at least as cheerful as anyone wearing what looked like a goth feather duster could. “If you’re going to steal stuff, you’ve gotta be honest about it. Then you can get better.”
Scanlan snorted. “Aren’t you the one trying to be all holy and righteous? Maybe you should try the whole ‘being honest’ thing.” If only there was some way to tell what kind of magic was on this stone. He could feel it giving off energy, there was no doubt there, but what did it do?
Shrugging, Vax said, “I mean, sure, I’m trying to be “all holy and righteous” but I’m still a thief. It’s what I do. I’m just saying, if you ever want a lesson, I’d be happy to teach you.” Scanlan finally looked up at that. Vax looked genuine, but-
“I don’t need lessons! I do just fine on my own, thank you very much.” Scanlan huffed, and turned away. Something clinked lightly on to the ground in front of him.
As Scanlan reached down to pick up his own money pouch, Vax said, “Are you sure?” He didn’t give Vax the satisfaction of looking back.

Weird request, but you summarize stuff. I've only caught a few episodes of Critical Role but am curious about Kima and Allura. What's the story there? Don't worry about spoilers, I'm never gonna get caught up on this show anyway, but I am curious!
Oh gosh! Okay. This actually dovetails nicely with some logistical stuff I need to figure out for reasons, so hey, here’s my really long-winded summary (and other folks, please chime in if I get something wrong, there’s a lot of ground to cover here ranging from pre-series to right up where we are now):
So, basically, Allura (human wizard) and Kima (halfling paladin of Bahamut) were part of the same adventuring party, and their exploits culminated in a big ol’ boss battle fifteen years before the start of Critical Role against an ancient red dragon named Thordak. Their party managed to seal Thordak in the Elemental Plane of Fire, but in the process three members of their party were killed (Sirus, Dohla, and Ghenn), leaving only Kima, Allura, and their elementalist friend Drake Thunderbrand standing at the end of it.
In the wake of the battle, the three of them went their separate ways, despite the romantic relationship that had developed between Kima and Allura. Allura accepted an offer to become a member of the Council of Tal’Dorei in the capital city of Emon, but Kima wasn’t exactly keen on a political position and traveled north to the holy city of Vasselheim instead, where she worked with Highbearer Vord, the leader of the Order of Bahamut. Kima mentions in early episodes of the show that she and Allura would still try to meet up every few months for drinks, but their lives were pulling them in different directions.
Matt’s made it pretty clear that Allura still spent a lot of time thinking about Kima during those years---in his playlist he posted way back in 2015, he says of Allura: “So long as protecting the realm means protecting this one person, then all the toil and challenge is worth it.” Kima also wound up struggling a lot with her faith in the wake of all the evils she’d seen, and frequently butted heads with Highbearer Vord and the more straitlaced folks she worked with.
Fast-forward fifteen years, when Kima starts to get visions of a terrible evil brewing under the dwarven city of Kraghammer and rushes in half-cocked. Allura starts to get worried after several weeks pass with no word and hires a group of adventurers that she’s worked with in the past to go find Kima---the adventurers, of course, are Vox Machina, and this push was the impetus for the first on-stream plot arc of the show.
Vox Machina manage to get Kima out of a bad situation in the Underdark, and then they all wind up embroiled in a conflict against a particularly corrupted beholder named K’Varn, who’s managed to get his hands (eye-tentacles?) on a Horn of Orcus and is sort of chilling with his mind flayer pals as a lowkey champion of the god of undeath, which is not fantastic. VM kill K’Varn, and together with Kima (who’d been turned to stone by a basilisk, thus beginning her longstanding pattern of bad luck on missions involving VM) just barely manage to escape via teleportation circle back to Emon.
After a Weekend-at-Bernie’s-esque pub crawl with Kima still in stone form, the party finally manages to restore her, and they all head over to explain the events to Allura. Allura is delighted to see Kima again, and they have a tearful reunion. Kima does travel with VM back to Vasselheim to seal the Horn of Orcus in the Platinum Sanctuary (a temple of Bahamut), leaving Allura in Emon. VM eventually moves on to the next plot, leaving Kima in Vasselheim.
Once VM finishes dealing with the next major arc of the show, the end result is a tiny floating, spinning ball in a forgotten ziggurat under the human city of Whitestone that also happens to nullify all magic for a wide radius in its vicinity. You know, your standard everyday stuff. Completely out of their depths, they ask Allura to travel to Whitestone and check it out while they return home to Emon, a decision that possibly winds up saving her life.
Allura heads to Whitestone and brings Drake Thunderbrand on board to evaluate the situation with the orb. When some of her arcane connections with cities across Tal’Dorei start to go dark, she heads back to Emon to report in to VM at their Keep just outside the city and figure out what the heck’s going on.
She and Drake arrive to find the party in the middle of a very serious argument, on the verge of an all-out brawl, over a magical skull housing some sort of entity that claims to be able to grant any wish. Why is a wish particularly tempting right now? Oh hey, turns out four ancient chromatic dragons, the Chroma Conclave (excellent 80s band name), just attacked Emon, killed most of the Tal’Dorei Council, made a beeline for and destroyed Allura’s home, and are spreading out to destroy most bastions of civilization across the continents of Tal’Dorei and Wildmount. When VM reveals that the leader of the group was Thordak, the same dragon that Allura and Drake barely survived sealing in the Plane of Fire, Allura is in shock.
Allura and Drake head out to the ruins of the Cobalt Reserve in Westruun to try and find some information that could help them defeat the Conclave. VM eventually make their way to Vasselheim in search of allies, and are startled to discover that the city is unaware of the devastation happening across the ocean. When Kima finds out about the destruction of Emon, she’s frantic and her first thought is to find a way to get to Allura. VM manage to assure her that Allura is as safe as anyone can be right now, and Kima joins them on their disastrous journey to the sunken tomb, where they face another beholder and Kima is nearly killed by a long fall in the battle. In the aftermath, she makes her way with the party back to Whitestone, and finds out for the first time that the leader of the Conclave is indeed Thordak---the news puts her into an uncharacteristic state of panic.
While VM travels around in search of ancient weapons to help defeat the Conclave, Allura eventually turns up in Whitestone, which has become the unofficial seat of a new war council. By the time VM shows up again, having killed one member of the Conclave, Kima and Allura are both there to greet them. At this point, the two of them have moved into a house in Whitestone together (there’s a cute moment where Vex knocks on Allura’s door early in the morning and Kima answers it in a too-big nightshirt) and are helping to coordinate studies of the orb under Whitestone as well as the defense of the city itself, once it becomes clear that forces are amassing there. Kima takes out a would-be assassin who comes after them in their home (part of an elaborate rakshasa revenge plot; Gilmore pulps his assassin, it’s a whole thing).
Kima winds up accompanying VM on their mission to Draconia to kill Vorugal, a member of the Conclave, and discovers before leaving that another member of the Conclave, Raishan, has been (in disguise) in Whitestone for some time, that she knows all of their secrets and could wipe out the last form of resistance in an instant, and that the party has worked out a very shaky secret deal with her, since it turns out they all want to kill Thordak. Despite Scanlan’s attempts to modify her memory to make her forget this revelation, Kima knows about the infiltration, and agrees to move forward with the plan regardless. The party manages to kill Vorugal and return back to Whitestone, at which point Raishan’s identity is revealed, for better or worse, to the entire war council.
Kima and Allura go to Fort Daxio to help coordinate troops for a final push against Thordak, who has settled down over the city of Emon and is slowly shaping the land into some sort of super-evil volcano. As you do. At Fort Daxio, Gatekeeper Xanthas, a former ally from Emon, reveals himself to have switched allegiances to work with Thordak, and manages to cast a Feeblemind spell on Allura. VM shows up in time to take Xanthas out and reverse the effects of the spell, at which point an extremely shaken Kima and Allura have their first “on-screen” kiss.
After Thordak is defeated, and Raishan escapes an attack from VM in the immediate aftermath of the battle, Kima and Allura accompany VM to Raishan’s hideout on the Island of Viscan, which once served as the home base of long-dead necromancer Opash. After some shenanigans with gravity-reversal and a whole lot of undead bodies, the party battles Raishan, with both Allura and Kima coming very close to death in the fight. In the aftermath, the party tries to escape the island with their dead and wounded... and discovers when their first spell fails that this island has some defenses in place against transportation magic.
Allura eventually manages to put down a teleportation circle and step through, but Kima hangs back a second, telling VM that something looks off about the circle. Before anyone can decide what to do, Kima resolutely steps through after Allura, and they both vanish. Keyleth manages to scry on them and discovers that they’ve landed in open ocean somewhere, which is bad news if you happen to be in full plate armor, like Kima. Through a complete fluke of a dice-roll (natural 20 on a perception check), Keyleth manages to spot them from the beach---swimming in the wrong direction and already exhausted---and Vex shoots out after them on her broom.
She grabs Allura, Allura grabs Kima, and bookish-wizard Allura, zero-strength-modifier Allura manages to roll a natural 20 on her strength check to hang on to Kima until they get to safety.
In the aftermath, Allura and Kima are helping to put things back in order in Emon, ensuring together that more shadowy organizations like the Clasp don’t make too much of a bid for power in the chaos. When VM heads out on their next adventure, Kima makes sure to tell them that if they see Highbearer Vord, they should just pretend they haven’t seen her; she’s staying with Allura.

Critical Role Chapter 1 Recap
I was inspired to write this by the pre-stream recap that was first seen in Episode 36. Hope you like it, as I’ve decided to write it in a similar fashion. And I might do this for the other chapters as well, if you guys want it.
Chapter 1 covers Episodes 1-16.
Across the realm of Exandria, there exists a legendary band of adventurers who time and time again risked life and death to ensure the survival of the realm. That band was called Vox Machina. Many know of their humble beginnings, but there is still more to tell.
Upon arriving at the dwarven city of Kraghammer in search of the missing paladin of Bahamut, Lady Kima of Vord, the party samples the culture of the city and its inhabitants, managing to annoy several of its guards in the process. Nevertheless, they set off to inquire with the owner of the mithral quarry, Lord Nostoc Greyspine. After dealing with a hideous abomination of a naga, he reveals that Kima had descended deep into the mines months ago and has not been seen since. He says that he will pay the party handsomely for ridding Kraghammer of the strange creatures that hinder his work. The party agrees to the contract and the next day they enter the mines.
During their investigation, they find their way into a tunnel not shown on the map they were handed, and after traversing it and finding themselves inside the Underdark, they are ambushed by two umberhulks in addition to duergar and a brain-like creature they never encountered before. During the battle, Grog is attacked by the creature and is rendered unconscious. An interrogation of the only surviving duergar reveals to the party Kima's whereabouts in addition to a mysterious entity named K'Varn. After finishing her off and managing to restore Grog, the party finds their way through a goblinoid village, all of its inhabitants dead with puncture wounds on their heads and their brains absent.
Pressing on, Scanlan scouts ahead of the party and finds himself in a warcamp filled with duergar. He then finds several dwarven miners held captive... and a strange humanoid creature with writhing tentacles surrounding its mouth. After witnessing a horrific execution of one of the miners at the hands of the creature, Scanlan escapes and informs the party of his findings. A plan is set into motion to get as many enemies out of the warcamp as possible and have them plummet into the nearby chasm. The plan is put into action and all goes well until Vax finds himself stunned by the tentacled creature, now known as an "illithid" or "mindflayer". Tiberius reacts quickly and manages to save him and the magic carpet. In the midst of their debate as to where to go next, Vex and Keyleth steal the carpet and descend into the chasm, and during their search they come across another illithid. They inquire with him, saying that they can help him achieve revenge for being outcast from his home. The creature agrees to the offer, and introduces himself as Clarota.
Returning to the group, Clarota tells his story of his exile from his colony, located deeper within the Underdark. He had been "cursed" with the ability to use arcane magic, which went against the ways of his people. Some time after he was cast out, he had discovered that his people and the "elder brain" of the colony were enslaved by K'Varn and now have an alliance with the duergar. After some deliberation, Vox Machina agrees to aid him in destroying K'Varn and freeing his people. During this time, Pike manages to reunite with the group and they manage to come up with a daring plan to infiltrate the barracks, find the illithid and the duergar general, and cut off the source of the army's morale. A tense battle follows, which is made even more dire with the surprise appearance of a bulette. Despite this setback, the party is victorious as the general is interrogated. He informs the group of the Emberhold fortress and that Kima is being held hostage inside, after which he is executed by Clarota.
A daring escape follows which almost ends up killing some of the group. Nevertheless, despite dealing with more surprises, the party finds their way to the Emberhold and manages to locate Lady Kima. After a tense confrontation, Kima and Clarota form a temporary truce and, with the party's assistance, they storm the throne room to do battle with King Murghol. In the midst of the fray as the king is slain by Scanlan, Grog is dominated and abducted by Queen Ulara. The party is forced to flee as the fortress becomes flooded with magma. Managing to find shelter, after a tense confrontation with Keyleth, Kima reveals why she came to Kraghammer: to find an evil artifact known as the horn of Orcus and to either destroy it or retrieve it so that the Tal'Dorei Council can decide what to do with it.
After traversing through a sea of glass and bone, which had fit the description of such a sea in one of Pike's visions, the party finds Ulara's campsite and they manage to free Grog. Ulara is beaten and suddenly possessed by K'Varn, who taunts the group and invites them to the colony of Yug'Voril. A scrying ritual by Keyleth soon reveals the true identity of K'Varn: that he is a powerful creature known as a beholder and that the horn is attached to him, thus amplifying his already fearsome power. The party makes their way to the top of the illithid temple which houses the elder brain and they begin their assault. Despite Grog's life being lost temporarily, K'Varn is slain but he rises once more due to the power of the horn. But even that is not enough as he is slain once again and the horn is removed. The party is given no chance to rest, however, as the illithid colony enters the temple and the elder brain is now free. Clarota is accepted back into the colony, but then he turns on the party now that their usefulness is no more. After a fierce struggle, the party manages to escape thanks to Tiberius's teleportation circle and they emerge in Emon, finally out of the Underdark and back to the surface.
The following day, the party brings Kima to Allura Vysoren, the two women happily reunited, and then they inquire with their fellow council members about what to do regarding the horn. It is eventually decided that the horn be sent to the city of Vasselheim where it will be sealed for all eternity. After gathering the supplies needed, and being reunited by one of their long-lasting friends, the glorious Shaun Gilmore, the party boards the skyship Deera, helmed by Captain Damon. Despite an ambush by wyvern-riding pirates, the party arrives after several days and are immediately taken aback by how different the culture in Vasselheim is. Making their way to the Platinum Sanctuary, they inquire with High Bearer Vord about the method that will be used to seal away the horn of Orcus. The party then traverses underground towards their destination, dealing with traps and phase spiders along the way, and ultimately succeed in making sure the horn is secured and subsequently locked away. After the deed is done, the party says their farewells to Lady Kima and subsequently to one of their own as outside of Vasselheim, an ancient temple of Sarenrae was said to have been recently discovered. Pike takes it upon herself to remain in the temple and assist in the restoration, and says her goodbyes to Vox Machina for the time being.
And from there, the legend of Vox Machina continues to be written...
