Ashes (snippet from a WIP)
Another snippet from another WIP for @calamity-talvi. A modern-setting AU, this time. A bit boring, I'm afraid. And again an old thing that will probably never see the light of day. Still, I consider these things as good writing exercises. 😅
Merlin checked his watch and idly imagined what the representative of an international luxury estate agency would look like. He only knew her name, Anne-Sophie. In his mind’s eye, he envisioned an impeccably manicured and flawlessly made-up blonde. With long flowing hair, designer outfit, expensive perfume and a purse that probably cost half his yearly income. Not to mention the ubiquitous clipboard. Oh and of course, she was driving a plush Audi SUV with tinted windows. He knew it was her the second he saw the vehicle barrelling down the quiet street like it owned the neighbourhood. A jumpy young stray cat scampered from under a parked car at her approach and Merlin kept an eye on the little furball in case he needed to prevent the scrawny thing from becoming roadkill. The SUV was swiftly parked and out sprang its driver. Its male driver. Who was gorgeous. And looking at him. Merlin froze and felt his brain blank out and his heart reboot. So… not the real estate agent? But fuck, the guy was handsome. Almost aggravatingly so. Short-ish blonde hair, Scandinavian cheekbones, professional curve to his lips – assessing Merlin’s net worth with one sweep of his sharp, solid blue eyes. He looked like he’d just stepped out from the centrefold pages of GQ Style, wearing his casual suit with an effortless elegance that screamed old money. This bloke looked exactly like the kind of toff who’d live in a penthouse apartment.

A Double Quartette
Les Mis Letters reading club explores one chapter of Les Misérables every day. Join us on Discord, Substack - or share your thoughts right here on tumblr - today's tag is #lm 1.3.2
These Parisians came, one from Toulouse, another from Limoges, the third from Cahors, and the fourth from Montauban; but they were students; and when one says student, one says Parisian: to study in Paris is to be born in Paris.
These young men were insignificant; every one has seen such faces; four specimens of humanity taken at random; neither good nor bad, neither wise nor ignorant, neither geniuses nor fools; handsome, with that charming April which is called twenty years. They were four Oscars; for, at that epoch, Arthurs did not yet exist. <i>Burn for him the perfumes of Araby!</i> exclaimed romance. <i>Oscar advances. Oscar, I shall behold him!</i> People had just emerged from Ossian; elegance was Scandinavian and Caledonian; the pure English style was only to prevail later, and the first of the Arthurs, Wellington, had but just won the battle of Waterloo.
These Oscars bore the names, one of Félix Tholomyès, of Toulouse; the second, Listolier, of Cahors; the next, Fameuil, of Limoges; the last, Blachevelle, of Montauban. Naturally, each of them had his mistress. Blachevelle loved Favourite, so named because she had been in England; Listolier adored Dahlia, who had taken for her nickname the name of a flower; Fameuil idolized Zéphine, an abridgment of Joséphine; Tholomyès had Fantine, called the Blonde, because of her beautiful, sunny hair.
Favourite, Dahlia, Zéphine, and Fantine were four ravishing young women, perfumed and radiant, still a little like working-women, and not yet entirely divorced from their needles; somewhat disturbed by intrigues, but still retaining on their faces something of the serenity of toil, and in their souls that flower of honesty which survives the first fall in woman. One of the four was called the young, because she was the youngest of them, and one was called the old; the old one was twenty-three. Not to conceal anything, the three first were more experienced, more heedless, and more emancipated into the tumult of life than Fantine the Blonde, who was still in her first illusions.
Dahlia, Zéphine, and especially Favourite, could not have said as much. There had already been more than one episode in their romance, though hardly begun; and the lover who had borne the name of Adolph in the first chapter had turned out to be Alphonse in the second, and Gustave in the third. Poverty and coquetry are two fatal counsellors; one scolds and the other flatters, and the beautiful daughters of the people have both of them whispering in their ear, each on its own side. These badly guarded souls listen. Hence the falls which they accomplish, and the stones which are thrown at them. They are overwhelmed with splendor of all that is immaculate and inaccessible. Alas! what if the Jungfrau were hungry?
Favourite having been in England, was admired by Dahlia and Zéphine. She had had an establishment of her own very early in life. Her father was an old unmarried professor of mathematics, a brutal man and a braggart, who went out to give lessons in spite of his age. This professor, when he was a young man, had one day seen a chambermaid’s gown catch on a fender; he had fallen in love in consequence of this accident. The result had been Favourite. She met her father from time to time, and he bowed to her. One morning an old woman with the air of a devotee, had entered her apartments, and had said to her, “You do not know me, Mamemoiselle?” “No.” “I am your mother.” Then the old woman opened the sideboard, and ate and drank, had a mattress which she owned brought in, and installed herself. This cross and pious old mother never spoke to Favourite, remained hours without uttering a word, breakfasted, dined, and supped for four, and went down to the porter’s quarters for company, where she spoke ill of her daughter.
It was having rosy nails that were too pretty which had drawn Dahlia to Listolier, to others perhaps, to idleness. How could she make such nails work? She who wishes to remain virtuous must not have pity on her hands. As for Zéphine, she had conquered Fameuil by her roguish and caressing little way of saying “Yes, sir.”
The young men were comrades; the young girls were friends. Such loves are always accompanied by such friendships.
Goodness and philosophy are two distinct things; the proof of this is that, after making all due allowances for these little irregular households, Favourite, Zéphine, and Dahlia were philosophical young women, while Fantine was a good girl.
Good! some one will exclaim; and Tholomyès? Solomon would reply that love forms a part of wisdom. We will confine ourselves to saying that the love of Fantine was a first love, a sole love, a faithful love.
She alone, of all the four, was not called “thou” by a single one of them.
Fantine was one of those beings who blossom, so to speak, from the dregs of the people. Though she had emerged from the most unfathomable depths of social shadow, she bore on her brow the sign of the anonymous and the unknown. She was born at M. sur M. Of what parents? Who can say? She had never known father or mother. She was called Fantine. Why Fantine? She had never borne any other name. At the epoch of her birth the Directory still existed. She had no family name; she had no family; no baptismal name; the Church no longer existed. She bore the name which pleased the first random passer-by, who had encountered her, when a very small child, running bare-legged in the street. She received the name as she received the water from the clouds upon her brow when it rained. She was called little Fantine. No one knew more than that. This human creature had entered life in just this way. At the age of ten, Fantine quitted the town and went to service with some farmers in the neighborhood. At fifteen she came to Paris “to seek her fortune.” Fantine was beautiful, and remained pure as long as she could. She was a lovely blonde, with fine teeth. She had gold and pearls for her dowry; but her gold was on her head, and her pearls were in her mouth.
She worked for her living; then, still for the sake of her living,—for the heart, also, has its hunger,—she loved.
She loved Tholomyès.
An amour for him; passion for her. The streets of the Latin quarter, filled with throngs of students and grisettes, saw the beginning of their dream. Fantine had long evaded Tholomyès in the mazes of the hill of the Pantheon, where so many adventurers twine and untwine, but in such a way as constantly to encounter him again. There is a way of avoiding which resembles seeking. In short, the eclogue took place.
Blachevelle, Listolier, and Fameuil formed a sort of group of which Tholomyès was the head. It was he who possessed the wit.
Tholomyès was the antique old student; he was rich; he had an income of four thousand francs; four thousand francs! a splendid scandal on Mount Sainte-Geneviève. Tholomyès was a fast man of thirty, and badly preserved. He was wrinkled and toothless, and he had the beginning of a bald spot, of which he himself said with sadness, <i>the skull at thirty, the knee at forty</i>. His digestion was mediocre, and he had been attacked by a watering in one eye. But in proportion as his youth disappeared, gayety was kindled; he replaced his teeth with buffooneries, his hair with mirth, his health with irony, his weeping eye laughed incessantly. He was dilapidated but still in flower. His youth, which was packing up for departure long before its time, beat a retreat in good order, bursting with laughter, and no one saw anything but fire. He had had a piece rejected at the Vaudeville. He made a few verses now and then. In addition to this he doubted everything to the last degree, which is a vast force in the eyes of the weak. Being thus ironical and bald, he was the leader. <i>Iron</i> is an English word. Is it possible that irony is derived from it?
One day Tholomyès took the three others aside, with the gesture of an oracle, and said to them:—
“Fantine, Dahlia, Zéphine, and Favourite have been teasing us for nearly a year to give them a surprise. We have promised them solemnly that we would. They are forever talking about it to us, to me in particular, just as the old women in Naples cry to Saint Januarius, ‘<i>Faccia gialluta, fa o miracolo</i>, Yellow face, perform thy miracle,’ so our beauties say to me incessantly, ‘Tholomyès, when will you bring forth your surprise?’ At the same time our parents keep writing to us. Pressure on both sides. The moment has arrived, it seems to me; let us discuss the question.”
Thereupon, Tholomyès lowered his voice and articulated something so mirthful, that a vast and enthusiastic grin broke out upon the four mouths simultaneously, and Blachevelle exclaimed, “That is an idea.”
A smoky tap-room presented itself; they entered, and the remainder of their confidential colloquy was lost in shadow.
The result of these shades was a dazzling pleasure party which took place on the following Sunday, the four young men inviting the four young girls.

MNN Apartment is a minimalist apartment located in Warsaw, Poland, designed by MAP. The apartment is a blend of Scandinavian simplicity, Japanese elegance, and the timeless appeal of mid-century modern design, avoiding the trappings of trendiness for a more genuine reflection of the homeowner’s preferences. This choice of style is a direct nod to the owner’s appreciation for Scandinavian design and a budding interest in Japanese aesthetics, inspired by recent travels.

Writer's game
I got tagged by @reallyhatethiswebsite thank you <3
I'm tagging @coreene @beesht @littleplasticrat @magthara @dodorimo no pressure
When did you start writing?
Eight or nine. Just a couple of pages, I think, it was a fantasy / sci-fi piece. My mother adored it and got me to the local writing club. They said they are concerned about my mental health.
Are there different themes or genres you enjoy reading than what you write?
Ha. No, actually. I like horror, I like transgressive fiction, dark fiction, dark fantasy, experimental fiction, sci-fi / cyberpunk, and that's exactly the genres I write in.
Is there a writer you want to emulate or get compared to often?
I fancy myself (I am not) a mixture of Irvine Welsh and Clive Barker. Those are the two I could re-read forever. Other notable mentions include Bret Easton Ellis, Anthony Burgess, Laird Barron, Cormac McCarthy... yeah, all men, I know. I think about that a lot. I don't have many reassuring thoughts on this point.
Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?
Ah, just my study. I work there, I write there, I eat there, I live there. It's scandinavian style, white walls, no decorations.
What's your most effective way to muster up a muse?
I am discipline kind of gal. Sit down and write in total silence. Grind through. Embrace the pain. Pain purifies.
Are there any recurring themes in your writing? Do they surprise you?
Sex, violence, power, money, parental abuse, humanity's inability to escape itself, how reality and fantasy intertwine and are they really that far apart, politics, left vs right, class warfare, toxic masculinity, breeding / inheritance / children, sadomasochism (NOT modern BDSM culture, that's something very different), sexual assault, sexual abuse, toxic relationships, gender wars, drugs, addictions, suicide.
They don't surprise me anymore, lol.
What is your reason for writing?
Not enough dark fiction in the world. Never enough. More.
Is there any specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating?
My favourite one is when the reader shares their own experience, gives me a bit of insight of their own psyche and why they reacted to my words in a certain way. I am very interested in people. I am eager to hear all the life stories.
How do you want to be thought about by your readers?
As someone adequate and friendly and approachable. Idk actually how I come across... feel free to tell me.
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
Naturalism, keeping tension and plot-building.
How do you feel about your own writing?
Some pieces I re-read many years after, some pieces I consider flops, I have strengths, I have weaknesses, I have moments when I am super insecure and moments when I am super proud. So ambivalent, I guess.

chez le cavalier ~ wip #2
[willow creek rebuild, house no. 1]
Tumblr media
day twooooo!! things got fun today - I feel like I really got in the groove of this style and my imaginary couple 🤸🏽
also added some scandinavian-adjacent elements and got nitpickey with furniture & clutter & color choices !
dining room:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's an update on the dining room on day 2!
switched out the stairs, added some color and diff decor!
these red chairs (s/o midnight manor from @bostyny) gave me a great new of 'oh yeahhhh this is gonna be good' but also before that doing this dark olive-y green version of the white paint I started with (from @harrie-cc copenhagen part 1) also made me say 'oh yes please.'
also omg I'm dying to get my hands on part two and three of copenhagen it's everything I didn't know I was so desperate for from queen harrie!
oke next is kitchen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
like I could just die it's so pretty!
cabinets and their matching countertop/shelf situation is mcm kitchen from @pierisim, pretty much all the other clutter, appliances, etc are @harrie-cc @felixandresims and other @pierisim sets!
the level of detail in color and thought with the copenhagen set is just SO GOOD - there's a swatch in the painted wallpaper with the same green molding as the dining room and the cream wash in the living room, plus a greige kind of baseboard that of course is perfect. I did in fact squeal when I saw this swatch and how well it brought the two rooms together.
ALSO - let's talk about the sink. the sink! pierisim's mcm kitchen didn't come with a sink that worked well with the shelf situation, so I hunted around my other options. the winner was felixandre's chateau prep sink! the way it looks like the knobs come out of the marble is just chef's kiss. I need to fiddle around with TOOL to make the sink a bit wider so it fits better.
trying to help it all come together:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(did you notice I finally fixed the stair shelving to finally line up properly?)
that little corner in the kitchen is gonna be a bistro table/morning coffee spot, I'm just avoiding it because I want it to tie things together nicely.
after finishing the kitchen and looking down that hallway to the living room, I realized I needed to bring some of that red into the living room to break up all the warm wood and brown tones.
seeking red:
Tumblr media
started with a little red end table, wasn't quite doing it...
Tumblr media
so I pulled everything red out of the entire @bostyny cc catalog and put it next to the chairs to try to find my winner lol
living room adjustments:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
couple different coffee table options with the new red accents in place...
Tumblr media
a chair switch out, different lighting, decorations!
adding the details of this space is when my house's imaginary owners really started building a personality. the little tapestry below the sconce I imagine was from their first date at a festival; the lamp in the bay window was in one of their apartments when they first started dating and the other one hated it so much but it's still around; the little dog sculpture is of their future dog; the tiger painting hung up by a ribbon because they couldn't find nails the first night they moved in so they hung it on the wall hook left behind.
do you think I'm crazy yet?
so much for I'm not creating actual sims for these builds - apparently I am (at least in my head).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
more fun details!
rain boots - they lived in a rainy city before moving to willow creek and have gotten in the habit of leaving their boots out right next to each other.
adding curtains:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
just like real life - curtains bring everything together! the bay window got the same roman shades as the entryway window.
filling in a corner:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ignore the fact that I haven't decorated out the little media shelf, but I love the little corner!
not sure how functional this really is - but man is it cute.
okay that's all see you for day 3!

Quirk #8
Here is my eighth quirk idea! Feel free to use this in your fanfics (just give me credit if you directly got it from me) obviously I know however I’m not the only creative person in the world and that some people may have also had these ideas before me!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quirk: Shield
She can create force-field like shields and utilise them however she requires
This entails:
- Can create a force field shield in different sizes and shapes
- Can create mental shields from psychic attacks on not only themselves but others
- Can create oxygenated or deoxygenated shields.
Weaknesses
- Will get migraines after defending off heavy physics attacks
- The larger the shield the more energy used
- The laws of physics still apply to them so if she was to create a shield to absorb the impact of a nuclear bomb that energy is still in the shield and will have to be released somehow. User can absorb small impacts like gun shots quirk impacts and punches but not a bomb or a building falling etc
Strengths
- She’s taught herself fun little ways to use her quick offensively as “shield normally connotes quite a defensive power and that it wouldn’t be very good in an upfront battle. She can create loads of mini shields that will feel like bullet wounds with or without piercing skin, (it depends how mad she is)
- Her quick isn’t only defensive but is great for rescues and I feel like she’d learn a lot from heroes like Thirteen.
- Theres so many capabilities of her quirk that different pro hero’s all show her different ways to use it!
Hero Name: The Defence Hero: Dish
Zodiac: Scorpio
Ethnic Background: Scandinavian
Height: 5ft 11
Weight: 192ibs
Style: Bohemian
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Physical Traits: Her eyes are like diamonds and they really sparkle
Mannerisms: She’s very nature oriented. The type to get rid of a spider holding it like it’s her child.
Favourite:
Food: Homegrown Fruit and Veg, like Raspberries, Courgettes etc
Drink: Tropical Chai Smoothie (Anytging that screams healthy)
Colour: Grey
Weather: Morning Dew and Light Drizzle
Possession: Her plants, she’s a massive nature girlie and she loves having succulents and flowers and vines in her room.
Morning Routine:
She has one of those really aesthetic lives where she wakes up, showers, does her skin care, puts on yoga clothes, does yoga, meditates, waters her plants and trims them etc, then she has breakfast.
Hobbies:
She’s the type that people would assume is lowkey and likes to do things like pottery and painting but I feel like she’d shock people by being into stuff like Ghost hunting and Extreme Sports etc.
Special Skills:
Apart from the fact that she definitely has a green thumb she’d be incredible at teamwork, something that a lot of characters would admire her for.
Pet Peeves:
Talking with your mouth full or wet noises when eating.
Bad At:
Reading people, she cannot see emotions at all and her social skills are in fact lacking.
Biggest Fear:
Her shield not being strong enough and it breaking when she’s protecting civilians.
Greatest Flaw:
She’s just a very chill dude, but a lot of people see her as too chill and nonchalant. She was at one point super unmotivated to be a hero but after certain interactions her mind would be changed.
Goals:
To open up an immersive rainforest cafe where all the profit goes to helping civilians who have experienced some kind of loss in villain crimes and for betterment of the community.
Who I see them with:
Guys - SHINSO, Aizawa
Girls - Mandalay, Uraraka

i think the name is cringe but i really like the so called "japandi" style of interior design (mesh of modern japanese and scandinavian interior design principles) so for my current miniature project i'm looking at designer furniture online & on 3d warehouse in this style that i like and recreating/3d modelling them in sketchup so i can cut them apart into flat pieces that are capable of being cut out of cardstock at 1/24 scale for recreating them as miniatures and i haven't done any of this shit before so i'm slowly teaching myself all the skills to be able to do this successfully and just picking the furniture i want to recreate in half scale is so fun i feel like i'm shopping

[Review] Year Walk (Wii U)
Tumblr media
A dark and compelling Scandi fairy tale… now with gyro controls!
After playing Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, I was curious about Simogo's other moody puzzle adventures, especially this one which got an enhanced port to the Wii U. Now of course you can't buy Wii U games anymore, but there are more custom ways, and of course I supported the developer by buying a copy on Steam as well!
Year Walk leans into the developers' Swedish origins by portraying the old folk ritual of årsgång, where by deprivation and quest one might catch a glimpse of the future. This plays out as a short horror-puzzle adventure where you navigate a small forest, gathering clues and encountering dangerous creatures from Scandinavian folklore such as the Brook Horse and Church Grim.
Tumblr media
Your surroundings are rendered like a bleak but beautiful watercolour pop-up book. Each screen is a simple 2D line with exits above and below, and occasional things to interact with. Year Walk keeps things fairly simple with the controls, but requires some note-taking to match up patterns and symbols. When you find one of the forest's monsters, things go beyond creepy fairy tale into the territory of jumpscares and slightly disturbing imagery, so be warned.
The ending is especially grim, but a post-credits scene hints at a deeper mystery that reveals a new layer to the story, explored via journal entries from a modern scholar of these cultural practices. I found it interesting, especially with respect to Lorelei which expands on similar concepts.
Tumblr media
As a bite-sized but evocative puzzle game with some nice cultural ties it's a nice little package, but I found it rewarding to learn about the game's development history as well. Originally teased and hinted as almost an ARG, it arrived on iOS alongside a companion app with more background on the mythology involved, which does also have some gameplay relevance. A year later it received a computer port, which updates some things, integrates the encyclopedia, and adds a handy map. I found it worked well on Steam Deck with a combination of button and touchscreen controls. The Steam release also uniquely has achievements, some of which act as extra bonus puzzles.
The Wii U version came as a result of Nintendo courting indies in that era, with the porting help of Dakko Dakko. This goes all in on Gamepad features, with lots of gyro and rotation for basic actions, which I found strained my wrists a bit. There's an added interaction or two and certain notes and documents are now presented in Swedish with a translation for enhanced verisimilitude, but the use of the second screen is what makes this the definitive way to play for me, as it enables easy reference of the map, journal, etc. while keeping them separate from the context of the action in the forest. It also adds an in-built note-taking function, and an alternate more involved puzzle to unlock the second ending which even makes use of the normally dry Wii U digital manual!
Tumblr media
I don't mind a bit of creepiness but outright horror and frights don't agree with me. But apart from these popping up infrequently, I found this very compelling, even clearing it multiple times for those Steam achievements. Unlike with Lorelei, there's no randomisation in the puzzles so each playthrough is more or less identical, but the game is most effective as a one and done in a single sitting anyway. The art design with its painted style and stop-motion-esque characters is strong and makes for a thick atmosphere; I also saw shades of Sayonara Wild Hearts in the more surreal moments… by the way, you can get that game, this one, and Lorelei in a bundle on Steam you know! They're all very good!

Reflections of Glam: Elevate Your Space with Mirror Wall Art
Tumblr media
Why Mirror Wall Décor Deserves a Spotlight
Let’s be real—your walls do a lot of heavy lifting. Art is essential, yes. But mirrors? They do double duty. Mirrors visually expand a room while offering an instant dose of glam, elegance, or minimalism—depending on how you style them. Whether you’re designing a cozy apartment or reimagining a luxe living room, mirror wall décor works across aesthetics.
1. Sculptural Mirror Installations: Bold & Architectural
Ready to push boundaries? Sculptural mirror panels—think staggered, oversized, or multi-paneled—bring architectural rhythm to your interiors. Choose smoked glass for a moody edge or gold-accented frames for high-glam drama.
These work beautifully above console tables or on expansive blank walls. Use them to create focal points that feel curated, not cluttered.
Pro Tip: Anchor large-scale mirrors with sleek furniture pieces in complementary tones. Think a marble-topped sideboard or a velvet bench—elevated, layered, and intentional.
2. Vintage Mirror Gallery Walls: Romantic & Reflective
There’s something inherently romantic about vintage mirrors—aged patina, curved frames, baroque detailing. Create a curated gallery wall using mismatched antique mirrors in different shapes and finishes. Go with gold, pewter, or even distressed wood.
This look is ideal for bedrooms, entryways, or any space that needs an eclectic, lived-in touch.
Style It With: Candle sconces, layered artwork, and fresh florals for that dreamy, Parisian apartment feel.
3. Minimalist Mirror Grids: Clean & Curated
For those who crave symmetry, minimalist mirror grids are a win. Install square or rectangular mirrors in clean rows—ideal for Scandinavian or modern interiors. The repetition creates structure while keeping the look elevated.
Stick with frameless styles or go full monochrome with black or white borders for high contrast.
Where to Try It: Dining rooms, office walls, or even a luxe bathroom accent.
4. Organic & Irregular Mirrors: Fluid & Modern
Mirrors don’t have to be perfectly shaped. Organic, wavy mirrors are trending in 2025 for their ability to soften hard lines and add a playful, fashion-forward element. From amorphous blobs to irregular sculptural cuts, these pieces feel like modern art with function.
Pair them with clean walls, neutral tones, and textural materials like linen or concrete for contrast.
Bonus Layer: Combine with floating shelves, asymmetrical lighting, or pampas grass for added
