Day 12: But You Still Take the Damage @arcvmonth

There are a few running gags or bits both in the show and even in the fanbase that are pretty funny. Yugo's name gag is classic. It does make sense why both Yuto and Shun thought that he was an alley for Academia, but it kept going throughout the rest of the series. That combined with Yugo mistaking Yuzu and Serena for Rin made it clear that he was a lovable goofball, which is still so much different than what I thought Yugo was going to be like when he first appeared in Yuto's flashback. I only managed to see season one of the dub. It isn't the worst dub in the franchise, but I just felt that if I wanted to rewatch Arc V, which of course I do, I'd rather stick to the Japanese version instead of mixing up both versions. That being said, they still had a hard time trying to adapt that running gag with the typical dub dialogue. Sawatari's whole gag of adding to his self-imposed title was also pretty funny. It's perfectly on brand for him and they even kept it up for the last chuck of the series.

Fans really had a fun time with the whole “But you still take damage” bit. It wasn't a running gag exactly, but it happened a lot during the duels throughout the series that fans focused on it. I only lurk around to see some reactions to the series after Arc V since I don't want to get too involved with the fanbase for a lot of reasons, but even when the line comes up in later series, people tend to still bring up Arc V, which is pretty nice.

The crowing fandom joke definitely is Zarcmas though. I was busy spending the holiday with my family, so I didn't see the reactions until late that night. The timing for Zarc's revival was pretty hilarious in a way. Zarc had been revived, we didn't know what happened to the Bracelet Girls yet, the four Dimensions were becoming one and all of the characters were in danger. What a way to start off Christmas Day and fans just jumped on it by coining the term Zarcmas. I love Zarc, so the fact that fans often still bring up Zarcmas every year for the holidays is pretty great too.

Day 26: Action Magic – Crossover @arcvmonth

Since I still immensely adore combining both Pokemon and Arc V together, I figured that I'll use this prompt for another chance to think of Pokemon that would fit with more of the Arc V cast. This time, I'll focus on the rest of the Lancers. Next to Yuya, Shun would be easiest character to give a full team since he would get practically all of the regional birds. Talonflame, Staraptor and Corviknight in particular are pretty much perfect fits for him. Kilowattrel would be a really great fit too. I think prior to the Academia invasion, he would have been training to become a new Gym Leader. He'd battle fiercely with his Pokemon, but still try to heal them between battles as much as possible so that they aren't exhausted.

I could picture Reiji with Psychic Pokemon like Gallade, Meowstic and Metagross. It would fit with his personality and Gallade would be a great fit since it battles fiercely when it finds someone or something to protect. Gallade would want to help Reiji with protecting their home from Academia, so that would make it battle more intensely. Reira would also have Psychic Pokemon, but starting off with a completely unevolved team unlike all of the characters. Espurr is a perfect fit for her. She's also have a Ralts, a Beldum and an Abra. They would slowly become stronger over the course of the series, evolving to match with Reria's growth as well. She'd have a female Meowstic and a Gardevoir eventually instead to both mirror Reiji's team, as well as to hint at the twist that Reira is a girl. Her Gardevoir and Meowstic in particular are especially protective over Reira. After the battle against Zarc, they aren't turned back into Pokemon eggs, so they help to protect Reira after she becomes a baby. Reira had a psychic link with her Pokemon, so she recognizes them even after the battle as a result.

Gongenzaka would have Pokemon that rely more on defense than attack, so I could see him with Rock and Steel types for his team. Aegislash would be a good choice since it could go into for an attack only to block opponents with its shield. Bastiodon would be a great fit too with its shield. I could see him with a Garganacl given its defensive bulk. He would still have his family dojo, but it would be more well known for Fighting types and Gongenzaka wants to show that other types of Pokemon would still fit with their family dojo.

Tsukikage would definitely have a Greninja. I thought about giving one to Reiji just to match with his scarf, but Greninja is a ninja frog. I could see him using Dark type Pokemon since that would kind of fit with his ninja theme. Weavile would be a good choice. Kingambit would be really good for him too, especially with its ability Supreme Overlord in mind. Getting stronger with each defeated Pokemon would help out as a last ditched effort in a battle against Academia.

Dennis would have a Meowscarada. I thought about putting it on Yuya's team before, but its magician themed design and attack works so perfectly with Dennis. He would still be an undercover spy for Academia, but he'd really get into Pokemon Contests like he did with Entertainment Dueling in the show proper. He would have a variety of different types on his team instead just to make more flashy combinations. Grimmsnarl could be a good fit for him. A Togekiss would be an interesting choice too since it would show that he is able to bond and connect with his Pokemon in spite of being raised at Academia. Academia wouldn't encourage mistreating Pokemon, but with using Pokemon battles to invade other regions and attack innocent people, it wouldn't be the easiest place to form a connection with them either.

Sawatari would definitely be the kind of trainer who wants to get a full Shiny team in order to  brag about it to everyone. I could see Sawatari with a Toxtricity. While it isn't the kind of performance he normally does, Toxtricity Amped Form attacking as if its strumming a guitar would still fit with Sawatari's desire to get the crowd going during his performance. A Sableye would be a good fit for him too. I could see him getting a Luxray as well. He wouldn't start out as a Pokemon Coordinator, but I think he'd eventually want to become one after battling against Yuya and would try to go for more variety in his team afterwards.
