Mexican artist Saturnino Herrán (1887-1918) was a painter, draftsman, teacher, illustrator, who also revived the art of the mural in Mexico. In his short life he was a pioneer, and an innovator, in the way he fused modern Mexican art with Classical European aesthetics.

MWW Artwork of the Day (10/15/24) Saturnino Herrán (Mexican, 1887-1918) Our Ancient Gods (1916) Oil on canvas, 101 x 111.8 cm. Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University, Dallas TX (Collection of Andrés Blaisten)
Herrán did majestic paintings of Mexican Indians, giving them heroic strength and dignity. His figures have been associated with the traditions of Spanish art, particularly the work of Velázquez and José de Rivera, and also the Catalan modernism. Due to Herrán's quality as a colorist, it is not surprising that he occasionally designed stained-glass windows and was a seasoned book illustrator. The ambition to be a mural painter appeared at the end of his brief career, and in 1911 he completed large-scale paintings in the School of Arts and Crafts.
