What are your favorite Toph ships? And what’s your sexuality headcanon for her? 🫶🏻

I had to really think about this one because, for all that Toph was my favorite member of the Gaang when I watched ATLA, I've actually never written a Toph ship. In fact, Toph only appears in a single fic of mine, the unfinished Girls Night, which has no ships at all. In general I'd say I'm pretty lazy and apathetic about most Gaang ships and tend to default to either canon or what my friends like when I write them in the background. Except, oddly enough, for a single Toph ship that I've adopted as a pretty entrenched background headcanon: the brief, passionate affair between Toph and Satoru.

Now, this ship goes against everything I believe in in several ways. First, there are no comics, and nothing in the comics is canon, so this adorkable nerd shouldn't even exist in my brain. Second, I strongly dislike almost all theories about characters in LOK being secretly related to Gaang members - nothing wrong with these ideas, it's just a fantasy trope I broadly don't like (Rey should not have been a Palpatine, okay?). Yet here I am, convinced that Toph was absolutely handling Satoru's machinery and that the result of this summer of love was none other than Hiroshi Sato. I'll finish that fic eventually so y'all can see my full unhinged and utterly unsupported theory here.

Soooooo that's a really long-winded way of saying I like Satoph.

Other Toph ships I like are largely ones fandom friends write for. Taang is super cute and the first Toph ship I really liked (blaming @authorjoydragon almost exclusively for this). I'm in constant awe of Team Kanto (@twinkle-toph and @stitch1830) and the way they've turned nothing but a name into a living, breathing, cute-as-hell ship. Twinkles also writes fantastic Tokka. Etc. Etc. I guess by inference since all these are m/f ships I think Toph is straight? But I can't say I've thought too hard about that part.

Toph was everyone's favorite when she was born and hence the feeling of: We have to take care of her.

(Spoiler ends badly because she doesn't like it lol)

Lin becomes the grandparents' favorite, the feeling of protection returns stronger because what do people mean when she is a bastard? she is a Beifong and she is perfect, thank you very much.

Then Toph has Suyin and Oh, the feelings: The firstborn would have been the Beifong daughter, but you, Suyin, shall be mine.

I have so many headcanons about how they handled the whole 'Lin is a bastard' situation (after the very, very tense conversation of 'alright don't freak out but I'm pregnant no no dad you will *not* send any jerk after the father because I'm NOT marrying him and-DAD STOP SCREAMING YOU'RE MAKING ME SCREAM and c'mon mom you need to BREATH) (someday I'll write that one-shot, I've wanting to do it for years, it's apocalypticly dramatic) but in short: Lao and Toph, who rarely agree on anything beyond economic theory without a long and tense debate, agree immediately on legitimize the baby, otherwise the child will be bullied for life and it could even bring her or him legal problems once Lao passes away. After all, it's probably the only grandchild they're ever getting, none of them is getting any younger :p

(Then OH SURPRISE Lin is the CUTEST FREAKIN BABY her grandparents have ever seen and the baby fever starts)

I leave the topic of either Suyin being also illegitimate or not out in the air on purpose because, at least for me, she *not* being illegitimate makes more sense, because Toph is 38 when she's born and I assume that at that age she would save herself the trouble and plan things beforehand (plus, to me the dad is Satoru). It also adds some delicious drama between the sisters. Lin, the oldest, feels like an accident, thinking Suyin was the wanted child. I'd prefer to be optimistic and believe Toph never talked to them about their fathers because she didn't want to accidentally cause a rift between them (it doesn't work, but I have to work with what I have if I don't want to contradict canon).

Toph embodying her element of Earth and teaching Aang to stand his ground in direct answer to his guilt and pain about running away; Aang embodying the element of Air and helping Toph find the freedom and connection she'd always longed for and the fresh air of the change she truly needed after being stifled for so long, the way they play off each other so adorably but provide something the other deeply, truly, always needed to grow and be their full selves... They literally are each other's answers.

If most Taang shippers weren't toxic Zutara shippers who despise Aang and don't care about or correctly characterize Toph and operate solely under the bioessentialist "the 'girly boy' must be with a 'boyish girl' (and out of the way for the 'girly girl' I project onto and the 'bad boy' she can 'fix')" framework, I'd be so for it. Sigh.

Oh well, Aang and Toph's friendship hits hard too. I've never been one to view platonic love beneath romantic. Zukaang and Satoph will have to remain my favorite romantic ships for them.

Lin's daddd

Am I the only one who thinks that Toph just had a one-night stand with this guy "named Kanto"? Because I just don't see her dating or even being married or something like that.. Same with Su's dad, whoever that might be.

In a satoph scenario (with Suyin being theirs and Lin still never knowing about her own dad) do you think Lin resents Suyin for having a dad? Would the incident still happen?

Hi Anon, thank you for the ask! Good question, it’s been a while since I’ve talked about Satoph!

Okay so in the event that Toph ends up in a loving relationship with Satoru, they have Suyin, and he remains in the picture throughout his life, I would venture to guess Lin carries some animosity at first. She never knew her father, and Toph isn’t one to just talk about him either, so she knows nothing and it makes her believe that she wasn’t loved by him or something. And depending on your thoughts about Kanto in this AU or what happens to him, it’s reasonable to believe that perhaps Lin’s father didn’t care.

But, Satoru becomes a more frequent visitor in the Beifong household when Lin was growing up, and she enjoyed his company. He was very nice to her, he brought her cool toys that he helped make, and he would tell her stories if she asked for them. It just feels weird now that she’s going to have a sister who will have both a mom and a dad, and she gets a little jealous and nervous that she would be left out.

Toph and Satoru probably pick up on this, and they try to quell her fears quickly. They’re not replacing Lin, they just wanted to make their family a little bigger. And when the baby arrives, they’ll need to take care of her more than they would Lin only because she can’t. Knowing all of this helps some, but Lin would probably still be worried.

However, I think as time went on, she would see that Satoru treats Lin the same as he does Suyin, and he still reads her stories and brings home toys and listens to her crazy adventure ideas.

The age gap would probably make Lin and Suyin still butt heads a lot and they probably get annoyed with each other, but I think in any scenario where Toph has a partner or a more active support system (like, idk I feel like the Gaang wouldn’t have let what happened with Toph and her girls happen?? Idk), the incident wouldn’t occur. Lin feels like she’s listened to, Suyin isn’t craving attention, and Toph would have people she can lean on when she’s unsure of how to deal with a weird situation so that both girls feel listened to. So yeah, no incident. I can still see Suyin looking for something new to build (got her father’s creative mind with that!) and leaving Republic City when she’s an adult.

I think that about covers my thoughts on a situation where Satoru is Suyin’s father! Thank you again for the ask, Anon, it was fun thinking about Satoph again! Hope you have a great day!

Just finished reading The Rift and Toph and Satoru are THE PUREST. They totally like each other, it’s so obvious. Got any headcanons for me?

I’m sorry to say I haven’t read any of the comics. But I have seen some clips! I do remember seeing a scene about forming a partnership and they were def low key flirting. Just. The body language in that scene. Ya ain’t slick!

I can’t say I know his character well but I know he’s pretty nerdy and def a fan girl of Toph Beifong (bc who isn’t?). So here are some made up headcanons that may or may not actually fit for their relationship!

Satoru likes to tinker with stuff, and whenever he’s stuck he brings it to Toph. With her metal bending she can figure out what the problem is!

They’re homebodies. They like to lay around together and not do much. If they do go out on a date, it’s really casual. They don’t dress up for it, just go to get some grub, maybe walk around a bit.

They are actually incredibly touchy. They cuddle a lot when they’re alone. And even if they’re out in public, they’re usually holding hands.

Satoru is full of bad jokes. Toph pretends to hate it but he’s always making her laugh.

Toph loves to run her hands through his hair. It’s just so fluffy.

Hoo boy. Here we go.

The problem is, there are pairs I enjoy writing, pairs I enjoy reading, and pairs I enjoy specifically because there is someone I love reading who writes this pair phenomenally or just throws their whole heart into it. There are also different levels of enjoyment, from "will die for them" to "will read if I come across it" to "appreciate it exists" to "like it better than other pairs." So this is an inexact science at best. I'll do what I can.

The comics might be okay at best but Toph's arc in Imbalance was fantastic. We got:

1) Satoph

2) The narrative showing us *why* she later becomes a cop by leading the guards and fighting the bad guys

3) Overprotective Daughter Toph. I lost count on how many times she saved Lao. It was adorable and a nice develop of their relationship. Take a shot of tequila every time Toph growls I HAVE TO SAVE MY DAD.

Level 5: OTPs/pls be canon

Sokka - Tokka: As I’ve already mentioned, Tokka is one of my ultimate Avatar OTPs. Tophs crush on Sokka was just cute and I would always be interested to know just what it was that attracted her to him. Their dynamic was just great, but I also stan them as a Brotp too even though I wish they were canon.

Level 4: not an OTP, but I still support it

Satoru - Satoph: It was kind of a shock to see them pair her up with someone in the comics, but I guess Toph was gonna have to have some love interest at some point and Saotru was cute with her and I think they’d have a good run before breaking up, but the romance would be good for Toph.

Level 3: neutral ground

The Duke - The Doph: This was a bit of a random pairing but tbh I kind of see it happening when Toph and the Duke are much older, but only as a fling or something since I don’t really see much potential for that relationship.

Teo - Teoph: Another random pairing like The Doph but I see them having a fling or a short lived romance when they’re both older, but like The Doph I don’t really see much potential for them.

Level 2: Brotp

Azula - Azutoph: As I mentioned before, I think that once Azula’s cleared up her insanity that these two could become great friends

Aang - Taang: I can’t really understand the appeal of them romantically, since I see them better off as friends and I love their friendship dynamic.

Zuko - Toko: I’m salty that we never got a life changing field trip between these two because it would’ve been hilarious. I can only imagine the trouble they would’ve gotten up to together if Zuko had joined the Gaang at the end of book two so we were robbed of that.

Ty Lee: I don’t know what their ship name is but I liked their interactions in that one comic they had together since Ty Lee and Toph isn’t a pair that I would imagine to be friends but they surprised me

Level 1: Notp

Katara - Katoph: They can hardly tolerate each other as friends so I doubt any relationship between them would work

Suki - Tophuki: They didn’t really have many interactions during the show or anything like that so I couldn’t ship them together even if I tried. Plus, Toph liked Sokka anyways

Day 13: Agreement

They are at a formal event celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of the end of the war. Avatar Aang and Master Katara are off parading their young son around and blabbing about how he is a beacon of hope for the new Air Nation. Toph has some concerns.

“Sugar Queen and Avatar Floaty better be careful! What if he is a waterbender or a non bender? What then? Does it make him less than in the eyes of the world? From as soon as he can read, he will see all that he was *supposed* to be and never feel like enough. I can’t imagine anything more depressing!”

Satoru tries to calm Toph down.

Mai wholly agrees, and Zuko isn’t sure what to think.

Toph and Satoru have a son just a few months older than Bumi, and Mai and Zuko have a daughter a few months younger, but they were left at home with a very small, very trustworthy team of staff. The world knows nothing of them, for their own safety.

The son of the Chief of Police of Republic City and the Renaissance Mechanist of the century, and the Crown Princess of the Fire Nation would make nice hostages for ransom, and easy targets at this age. So their existence is kept secret. The world has no expectations for what they don’t know exists.

What would Toph’s life have been like if she had married Satoru? Any lavababy (because earth and fire) headcanons?

*Rubs hands together* Oh boy another ship for headcanons!

Toph and Satoru seem like an easygoing couple. Not a lot of stress or arguments, they get along really well almost all the time. For the first few years together, they’d really focus on their careers and building up the police department and earthen fire industries.

Compared to other ships, her life would be pretty mellow with Satoru. He’s not as big of a fighter/doesn’t have to fight for work lol. So, they’ll come home and talk to each other about their day (they love listening to the other talk lol). Since they work a lot, they often visit each other at work during their respective breaks, and they love it because it helps break up the monotony of the day.

If/when they have lavababies (ugh how precious. Lavababies lol), maybe they have a girl and a boy? The one fanart with three lavababies is precious tbh lmao… lemme go off of that.

The oldest would be mischievous and a bit rowdy like Toph. She’s big on “asking for forgiveness, not permission” and Toph is all for it lol. Secretly, she loves books though. And she doesn’t tolerate bullying from anyone or anything. She’s the toughest fighter of the group.

The middle baby would be super smart and creative, but surprisingly clumsy and not crafty. He’s got so many ideas and so much enthusiasm and energy for new inventions, just doesn’t have all the capabilities to actually create his inventions.

But the youngest would be a mellow and crafty kid. She has like, zero ideas, but when her brother asks for help, she has the know-how to make it happen. They’re a good team. She’s a bit quiet and shy, but don’t let that fool ya, she’s a fighter all-around. Well, all the Beifong babies are haha.

The family is super close in general, and after a while, Satoru mainly does part-time work so he can stay at home with the kids. But Toph has been known to take a couple days off here and there so the family can visit other places!

And… that’s all I got. Mostly a Domestic Satoph vibe, but they seem very cute and chill together and their family would radiate the same energy.
