We’ve just taken a major step toward cleaning up space junk.
On Monday, October 2, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US issued its first fine for space debris, ordering the US TV provider Dish to pay $150,000 for failing to move one of its satellites into a safe orbit.
“It is definitely a very big symbolic moment for debris mitigation,” says Michelle Hanlon, a space lawyer at the University of Mississippi. “It’s a great step in the right direction.”
But it might be more than just a symbolic gesture by the FCC. Not only does it set a precedent for tackling bad actors who leave dangerous junk orbiting Earth, but it could send shock waves through the industry as other satellite operators become wary of having their reputation tarnished. While the $150,000 FCC fine was modest, Dish’s share price fell by nearly 4% immediately following its announcement, pushing the company’s $3 billion valuation down about $100 million.
The FCC’s action could also help breathe new life into the still-small market for commercial removal of space debris, essentially setting a price—$150,000—for companies such as Astroscale in Japan and ClearSpace in Switzerland to aim for in providing services that use smaller spacecraft to sidle up to dead satellites or rockets and pull them back into the atmosphere...
Another hope is that the FCC’s fine will encourage other countries to follow suit with their own enforcement actions on space junk. “It sends a message out of America taking leadership in this area,” says Newman. “This is starting the ball rolling.”
Today there are more than 8,000 active satellites, nearly 2,000 dead satellites, and hundreds of empty rockets orbiting Earth. Managing these objects and preventing collisions is a huge task, and one that is becoming increasingly difficult as the number of satellites grows rapidly. The worsening situation is largely due to mega-constellations of hundreds or thousands of satellites from companies like SpaceX and Amazon, designed to beam the internet to any corner of the globe...
Hanlon says there are further measures that could be taken to discourage companies from failing to dispose of satellites properly. “Honestly, I would love to see that if you don’t meet your license requirements, you’re banned from launching for a number of years,” she says. “If you’re driving under the influence you can have your license revoked. These are the kinds of measures we need to see.”
Chris Johnson, a space law advisor at the Secure World Foundation in the US, says the loss of reputation for Dish about the satellite situation might be worse than any fine it could have received. “They promised to remove it and they didn’t,” he says. “It’s like the first operator of a car to get a speeding ticket.”
The fall in the company’s share price appears to be indicative of that reputational damage. The fine may not have been as severe as it could have been, but the FCC’s actions can be seen as a warning to other companies to tackle space junk. “This is going to be on their record and their reputation,” says Johnson. “It’s not trivial.”

Locally adapted, decentralised innovation is reshaping what environmental monitoring in Africa
Projects like AirQo in Uganda and Clarity Nodes in Nairobi are deploying low-cost particulate matter sensors to create real-time urban air quality maps.
These portable devices, calibrated against reference stations, are not housed in government ministries—they’re installed in schools, markets, and transit corridors.
This hyperlocal, community-focused deployment marks a decisive shift toward monitoring as a distributed public good.
In the water space, compact mobile testing kits—some linked to smartphones—are enabling NGOs and universities to test for E. coli, nitrates, and fluoride in boreholes and streams. These kits don’t require lab infrastructure or formal training, making them ideal for community-led sampling in rural areas.
Remote sensing is also playing a vital role. Satellite data from programs like Sentinel and MODIS is being used to track vegetation loss, algal blooms, and surface water dynamics.
In Lake Victoria, a hybrid approach pairs satellite analysis with on-the-ground sensors—offering a model for blended, multilayered monitoring frameworks that don’t depend on centralised equipment alone.
Perhaps the most transformative development is the rise of citizen science networks.
In Ghana, Nigeria, and Uganda, residents are using hand-held air monitors to document conditions in their own neighbourhoods.
These datasets are often shared via open-access platforms, where they inform city planning and regulatory debates. They also demonstrate a growing confidence in decentralised data ownership and interpretation.
Universities across the continent are enabling much of this innovation. Institutions like the University of Cape Town and Makerere University are not only building and testing sensors but also training local technicians and hosting data platforms. Their work has become a central node in an emerging, distributed monitoring ecosystem.

1. Batteries Become Everybody’s Best Friend
Battery prices continue to drop and their capacity continues to rise. The cost of electric vehicle (EV) batteries are now about 60 percent what they were just five years ago. And around the world, batteries have become key components in solar-plus-storage microgrids, giving people access to reliable power and saving the day for communities this past hurricane season.
2. Americans Get Cheaper (and Cleaner) Energy
State public utility commissions and rural electric co-operatives around the country are taking steps to deliver better service for their customers that also lowers their rates. At the same time, real momentum is building to prevent vertically integrated utilities from preferencing their coal assets when there are cleaner and cheaper alternatives available.
3. A Sustainable Shipping Future Gets Closer
More than 50 leaders across the marine shipping value chain — from e-fuel producers to vessel and cargo owners, to ports and equipment manufacturers — signed a Call to Action at the UN climate change conference (COP29) to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fuels. The joint statement calls for faster and bolder action to increase the use of zero and near-zero emissions fuel, investment in zero-emissions vessels, and global development of green hydrogen infrastructure, leaving no country behind.
4. Corporations Fly Cleaner
In April, 20 corporations, including Netflix, JPMorgan Chase, Autodesk, and more, committed to purchase about 50 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), avoiding 500,000 tons of CO2 emissions — equivalent to the emissions of 3,000 fully loaded passenger flights from New York City to London. SAF is made with renewable or waste feedstocks and can be used in today’s aircraft without investments to upgrade existing fleets and infrastructure.
5. More and More Places Go From Coal to Clean
Around the world, coal-fired power plants are closing down as communities switch to clean energy. From Chile to the Philippines to Minnesota coal-to-clean projects are creating new jobs, improving local economic development, and generating clean electricity. In September, Britain became the first G7 nation to stop generating electricity from coal — it’s turning its last coal-fired power plant into a low-carbon energy hub. And in Indonesia, the president vowed to retire all coal plants within 15 years and install 75 gigawatts of renewable energy.
6. Methane Becomes More Visible, and Easier to Mitigate
Methane — a super-potent greenhouse gas — got much easier to track thanks to the launch of new methane tracking satellites over the past year. In March, the Environmental Defense Fund launched MethaneSAT, the first for a non-governmental organization, and the Carbon Mapper Coalition soon followed with the launch of Tanager-1. By scanning the planet many times each day and identifying major methane leaks from orbit, these new satellites will put pressure on big emitters to clean up.
7. EVs Speed By Historic Milestones
This past year was the first time any country had more fully electric cars than gas-powered cars on the roads. It’s no surprise that this happened in Norway where electric cars now make up more than 90 percent of new vehicle sales. And in October, the United States hit a milestone, with over 200,000 electric vehicle charging ports installed nationwide.
8. Consumers Continue to Shift to Energy-Efficient Heat Pumps for Heating and Cooling
Heat pumps have outsold gas furnaces consistently since 2021. And while shipments of heating and cooling equipment fell worldwide in 2023, likely due to broad economic headwinds, heat pumps held on to their market share through. And over the past 12 months, heat pumps outsold conventional furnaces by 27 percent. Shipments are expected to continue increasing as states roll out home efficiency and appliance rebate programs already funded by the Inflation Reduction Act – worth up to $10,000 per household in new incentives for heat pump installations. 9. China Reaches Its Renewable Energy Goal, Six Years Early
China added so much renewable energy capacity this year, that by July it had surpassed its goal of having 1,200 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy installed by 2030. Through September 2024, China installed some 161 GW of new solar capacity and 39 GW of new wind power, according to China’s National Energy Administration (NEA). China is deploying more solar, wind, and EVs than any other country, including the United States, which is — by comparison — projected to deploy a record 50 GW of solar modules by the end of 2024.

For steel, cement, chemicals and other heavy industries, low-carbon technologies and climate-friendly solutions are not only increasingly available but growing more affordable. To speed this process, Third Derivative, RMI’s climate tech accelerator, launched the Industrial Innovation Cohorts to accelerate the decarbonization of steel, cement, and chemicals. // The Blackstone Isles //

The Blackstone Isles is an unnatural phenomenon in and of itself, the islands don’t show up on any maps, satellites, or from the air, but it is a very real place. Located in the Gulf of Mexico, right in the centre of the Chicxulub crater, where the Black Marker was found the island formed after its retrieval. It is unknown when the black fog set in, there were rumours of fog -aptly named by the locals as the Devil’s Breath- for a time even before the retrieval.
The phenomenal islands are a place for the abnormal, home to one of the founding families of Unitology the Blackstones; the name was taken in honour of the abnormal formations of a black stone located all over the isles. To enter the isles the secret lies in that of the marker, to hold a piece of the marker allows you to get access to the isles but the security is tight and there seems to be some force repelling all who are not welcome on the isles.

These black stones are made up of an unknown mineral that is as harder than diamond and cannot he broken or mined by natural means. It is unclear if they’re made from high pressure due to there location at an impact crater or are a side effect of the gravitational anomalies caused by the marker due to the way they grow in wild shapes and forms.
The surface of the stone is cold to touch, but hums with faint vibrations akin to whispers or a pulse, it is black in colour, so dark it seemed to draw in the light around it warping the surrounding with an otherworldly shimmer of fractured light. The light the stone absorbs dances across the stone like rippling water or sometimes in holy marker script or other strange runes and symbols, before sinking into the core and disappearing into darkness as if swallowed by the stone. The stone causes gravitational anomalies smaller pieces and dirt levitate around the formations.

All who enter the Blackstone Isles enter through Beastmaw, it is a fishing hamlet on the cove of the isles which is used to access everything else. The name came from the fact the cove is surrounded by jagged teeth like rocks making the cove resemble a maw, hence the name Beastmaw, in honour of their god. The main trade is fishing, as is most sea faring islands, but also the exportation of black stone and other rare resources to well faring bidders and market buyers who have the money to afford such exotic and unique luxuries. The residents are closed off to outsiders and are fiercely loyal unitologists, it is a very closed community and all are loyal devotions to the Blackstone family who reign supreme over the island as the top of the top.
There are many superstitions within the village, as many sea hamlets are known to have. Most won’t walk the streets at night when the fog rolls in as people will be lured into the night never to be seen again. Naming and such vessel rituals are taken seriously: all hold pieces of Blackstone and marker to always find their way home, none will do anything to anger the sea, a portion of the hall is always returned to the ocean in tribute to the beast, and so on. There are strange happening to be found in Beastmaw, from the thick fog that sings in the dead of night, to the inky rain that falls and dyes all the homes black, leaking them looking dripping and infected.
The fish caught are often strange abberations pulled from black waters, often with too many eyes or teeth, with glowing pustules and oozing sores, but this doesn’t deter the villagers. Instead the stranger the catch, the more you are praised, often villagers will hold a feast and share meals amongst each other with larger hauls and butcher the prize in the streets before a cheering crowd. Children often play with fish bones and seaweed, they play games about being beasts of the deep catching the heathens, they sing about the abyss and how it will swallow it all to bring unity and make them whole, and they all grin with sharpened yellowed teeth and blackened gums with eyes far too bright for the day.
The Cathedral

The isles has one main church all residents attend, a grand cathedral made up of Blackstone and glass to allow the aurora lights to spill inside and create a holy atmosphere. It is the central feature beyond the Blackstone mansion and is compulsory attendance for all residents and guests of the isle to attend biweekly sermons performed by the priests ordained by the Blackstone family.
The interior is like most churches of Unitology, but a lot larger and filled with an array of Blackstone decor and intricate tapestries, all decor is made from the islands resources and are astronomical in value, not to mention the main centre piece which is a Marker that is sat just behind a pool of black waters diverted from a holy spring higher in the isles and carefully moved to fill the pool. This pool is used for baptisms and rituals of all kinds, but it is known what goes in doesn’t always come out, often given in offering to the god and their marker.
The Estate

The Blackstone estate is a sprawling land area filled with a towering black stone mansion, with winding halls and doors that lead to nowhere, with shimmering stone illuminated by the sun and aurora of the night, it is a sight to behold and the main feature of the isles besides The Cathedral.
Made up of several conjoined and separate buildings the estate is broken down into the following (in no particular order): The reception, the foyer, the board room, the drawing room, the activities room, the meeting rooms, the library, the master wing, the mistress wing, the children’s wing, the guest wing, the servants quarters, the bathing pools, the stables, the garage, the trophy room, the ritual room, the chapel, the wine cellar, the holding cells, the store rooms, the specimen room, the medical wing, the main ballroom, the secondary ballroom, the inner garden, the outer gardens and lake, the kitchens, the butchers hit, the hunters quarters, the study, the dining hall, the washrooms, the linen room, the observatory, the office, the gallery, the attic, the annex, and various restrooms on various floors.
The estate is a winding complex of multiple floors and twisting halls, only the finest materials are allowed on the premises, so everything has a price tag of astronomical value. There are doors that don’t open, stairs that lead to nowhere, secret passageways and servants paths, hidden rooms and access to certain rooms and floors are locked with strange mechanisms only those of the Blackstone family know how to open. Not many get to set foot in the estate unless you’re the elite of the elite and get invited by the Blackstone’s, of which they’d have to be within the Church of Unitology; but even then most people are unable to even afford a chance due to the location on Earth and the secrecy of the isles.

WIRED published a shocking investigation this week based on records, including audio recordings, of hundreds of emergency calls from United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers. The calls—which include reports of incidents of staff sexual assaults, suicide attempts, and head injuries—indicate a system inundated by life-threatening incidents, delayed treatment, and overcrowding.
In a 6-3 decision on Friday, the US Supreme Court upheld a Texas porn ID law, finding that age verification for explicit sites is constitutional. In a dissent, Justice Elena Kagan warned that this determination ignores First Amendment precedent and will have privacy implications for adults.
Looking at the US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites last weekend, President Donald Trump posted initial announcements of the strikes on the social Network Truth Social, which then began suffering intermittent outages. And WIRED reported on assessments of the damage to the nuclear sites based on satellite photos taken before and after the bombing.
Meanwhile, Taiwan is scrambling to make its own unmanned aerial vehicles domestically as drones increasingly become a crucial weapon of war. The urgency comes as a potential conflict with China looms. And Telegram launched a purge of Chinese cryptocurrency markets last month, banning black markets that sold tens of billions of dollars in crypto-scam-related services. Now, though, the markets are rebranding and bouncing back with no further action from the communication platform.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is now using a mobile app called Mobile Fortify that allegedly allows agents to identify individuals by pointing a smartphone at their face or capturing contactless fingerprints, 404 Media reports. The app reportedly taps into government databases, including Customs and Border Protection’s Traveler Verification Service and a DHS biometric intelligence system, in an attempt to match facial images taken in the field against prior government-collected records. ICE says the tool is intended to help officers identify “unknown subjects,” but civil liberties advocates tell 404 Media that it may open the door to surveillance-driven profiling and wrongful arrests.
Nathan Freed Wessler of the ACLU told the site, “Face recognition technology is notoriously unreliable, frequently generating false matches and resulting in a number of known wrongful arrests across the country. Immigration agents relying on this technology to try to identify people on the street is a recipe for disaster. Congress has never authorized DHS to use face recognition technology in this way, and the agency should shut this dangerous experiment down."
US Feds Charge Group of Alleged Hackers Behind a Notorious Cybercrime Forum
Global law enforcement this week announced the bust of a group of alleged cybercriminal hackers accused of carrying out years of profit-focused data breaches and running a notorious cybercriminal forum and market known as Breachforums. French authorities arrested four members of the group who went by the names “ShinyHunters,” “Hollow,” “Noct,” and “Depressed,” though the police sources who shared the news with the French newspaper Le Parisien didn’t reveal the suspects’ real names. The US Justice Department, meanwhile, criminally charged Kai West, a young British man, with carrying out a broad, years-long hacking spree under the handle “Intelbroker” that inflicted $25 million total damage against victims before he was arrested in February. In addition to hacking and selling vast troves of stolen data, the group—or at least some subset of its members—appears to have served as administrators for Breachforums, a notorious sales forum for cybercriminal information and tools that was shut down in a law enforcement operation in 2023 but was later relaunched by its staff.
Scattered Spider Hackers Shift Their Targeting to the Airline Industry
The loose cybercriminal gang known as Scattered Spider has carried out data theft and ransomware incidents for years, most recently targeting the grocery industry, other retailers, and the insurance industry in the US and the UK. Now cybersecurity analysts at Mandiant and Palo Alto Networks say the group is turning their attention to the aviation and transportation sector. Specifically, hackers were behind a cybersecurity incident last week that took down some IT systems and the mobile app for Canadian airline WestJet, Axios reports. Now Hawaiian Airlines has said it’s experiencing a “cybersecurity incident” affecting its network, though it hasn’t yet revealed more details or any evidence that Scattered Spider is responsible. Cybersecurity firms tracking the group warn that other potential aviation and transportation industry targets should be on the lookout for the group, which often uses sophisticated social engineering to trick staff into letting them bypass multi-factor authentication and gain a foothold on target systems.
Hackers Breach a Norwegian Dam to Open Valve
Here’s a curiosity that we missed a couple weeks ago: A rare industrial control system hijacking incident in which an unknown hacker appears to have messed with the computer systems that control the Lake Risevatnet dam in southwest Norway, opening a valve to its maximum setting. The tampering, the motivation for which was far from clear, increased the dam’s water flow by nearly 500 liters a second, but didn’t come close to approaching a dangerous level. No one appears to have spotted the change for close to four hours. Officials told the Norwegian energy news outlet Energiteknikk, which broke the story, that a weak password on a web-accessible control panel allowed the unauthorized access.
