Wally Dion, born 1976, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Fabric Star Quilts.
Wally (Walter) Dion is a Canadian artist of Saulteaux ancestry living and working in Upstate New York. Working in a number of media including painting, drawing and sculpture.
Wally explains:
"The first fabric star quilt was made as part of a 2022 residency at Wanuskewin Park. It was my way of reflecting upon prairie tall grass and the reintroduction of bison into the Great Plaines. I wanted to make several transparent quilts and superimpose them; one in front another... a quilt for the microbiome, another for the bison, their manure & hooves, another for the summer fires that scorch the ground and a final quilt for the sweetgrass braid.
I was considering how all of these things worked together for thousands of years to create what is known as the 'prairie tall grass ecosystem'. A vast and fertile expanse of land stretching from the foothills of Alberta to the banks of the Mississippi. I wanted to highlight the invisibility of systems when everything is working well, as it should be.
I started with the green quilt because it is the colour of the sweet grass braid that is exchanged in ceremony and relationship building. I considered the nature and tradition of quilting; impoverished craftspeople using tiny scraps of fabric. I considered the act of offering fabric and adherence to tradition. I thought of a thousand tiny prayers and how that might look; invisible acts of respect and adherence to protocols spanning decades. My thoughts travelled across the land, imagining the trees and rocks collecting these prayers like a bush of cloth, or an etched boulders."

Celebrating identity, inclusion and pride, the Saskatoon Pride hosts a parade and festival where many attendees in colourful attire showed their support.
Vinnie Naistus, who participated in the parade with Elmwood Residences, said these events are important to have in the community.
“It’s going to remember everyone (of) who they are, and we are,” said Naistus, whose pronouns are he/she and they.
Andrea Gursky, who self-identifies as a ‘proud queer woman’, feels comfortable in a safe space during Saskatoon Pride parade.
“(I feel) happy. It’s just this bubbly excitement that I get,” said Gursky. “I’m feeling so great because everyone comes out. It’s great to see all the support and all the folks coming together." [...]

How Canadian Bison Have Been Brought Back From The Brink In Saskatchewan
In Saskatchewan’s Wanuskewin Heritage Park, bison are a vital piece of the indigenous cultural history and have been brought back from the brink to help rewild fragile grasslands.
— By Karen Gardiner | Published June 3, 2023 | July 29th, 2025
Dr. Ernie Walker has heard enough tired takes on Saskatchewan’s flat landscape. “A lot of people refer to the prairies as big and empty or useless,” he says, indignant, as he leads me around Wanuskewin Heritage Park, an archaeological site and cultural centre 15 minutes from the Saskatchewan city of Saskatoon. “That’s not it. What’s significant about the prairies is that it’s subtle.”
Standing under a big blue sky, amid dry rolling grassland that stretches uninterrupted all the way to the horizon, I think I understand the misconception: lacking mountains and with sparse trees, this isn’t exactly the type of landscape that wallops you with its dramatic features. But if there’s anyone who can convincingly argue for the value of this place, it’s Walker.
The park’s founder and chief archeologist, Walker has spent four decades with his hands in Wanuskewin’s dirt, turning up artefacts — including stone and bone tools, amulets and even gaming pieces — that have whispered to him stories of this land’s significance. Working here as a ranch hand in the early 1980s, he convinced his boss that the land had great archaeological importance. That slowly set in motion the park’s establishment, which involved a rare-for-the-time collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
“When visitors look at the landscape, I’m always interested in what they’re actually seeing,” Walker continues. “They need to know the story behind this place.” The story here is of 6,000 years of almost uninterrupted human occupation. That narrative was drummed into the land by millions of bison hooves until the animals met a violent end. But now, the bison are back and they’re writing a new chapter.

A Place of Sanctuary
In the Nēhiyawēwin (Plains Cree) language, ‘Wanuskewin’ roughly translates as ‘sanctuary’. Lying at the fertile confluence of the South Saskatchewan River and Opimihaw Creek, it was a gathering place for the people of the Northern Plains — the Blackfoot, Cree, Ojibwa, Assiniboine, Nakota and Dakota — who all followed bison herds and found sustenance and shelter here. Before European settlement, this land was home to vast numbers of bison (also known as buffalo) and the multitudes of species they supported, from the insects that thrived in the bison’s manure and the birds that fed on those insects to the humans that were dependent on the bison’s meat and skin.
But then came catastrophe. Bison were deliberately slaughtered to near extinction, a tactic used by settlers to starve Indigenous people into submission. “Around 400 years ago, there were 26 to 30 million bison on the Great Plains in North America,” Walker says. “By the 1890s, there were just 1,200.”
With the bison and their way of life gone, Plains people were left with little choice but to sign Treaty Six, an 1876 agreement with the British Crown that opened up the land for European settlement and promised one square mile of land to every Indigenous family of five. They were then corralled onto reserves.
“What if I were to come to all of your houses, empty your fridges and say you guys have to move to the s****y part of town?” Wearing a fringed buckskin waistcoat adorned with beaded flowers, Jordan Daniels, a member of the Mistawasis Nêhiyawak (Cree) Nation, raises his voice above the prairie wind to ensure we understand the depth of his ancestors’ loss. I’ve left Walker for now and joined a small group along Wanuskewin’s bison viewing trail where we’ll see and learn about Wanuskewin’s reestablished herd.
“The bison were a central part of our existence,” Daniels explains. “We made our teepees out of them. They were a main food source. Everything we needed for sustenance came from these animals.” There was also an emotional connection. Many Indigenous people consider bison kin, and the animal is ubiquitous in Indigenous stories and art. “They played a central role in our beliefs and in our way of seeing the world around us,” explains Daniels.
Bringing back the bison to Wanuskewin was always the park’s founders’ dream. In 2019, the animals finally came home. Six calves from Saskatchewan’s Grasslands National Park established the herd, followed by an additional five animals from the United States with ancestral ties to Yellowstone National Park. The herd, which has grown to 12, is now helping to restore native grasses. North America’s grasslands are one of the most endangered biomes in the world and bison, a keystone species, can help restore balance between animals, land and humans.
While grazing, Daniels explains, bison’s hooves aerate soil and help to disperse seeds, and by wallowing (rolling around), they create depressions that fill with rainwater and stimulate plant growth and provide habitat for microorganisms, amphibians and insects. “They’re ecologically unmatched,” he says. “But, I feel, nothing outweighs the cultural factor of having bison back here.”
Daniels’ connection is intensely personal. He explains that his seven-times great grandfather was Chief Mistawasis, the first chief in Saskatchewan to sign on to Treaty Six. Before signing, Daniels says, Mistawasis “had spent his life living how our people have done since time immemorial, out on the plains hunting bison. And today, I’m able to look at animals that are genetically close to the ones that he’d have interacted with. It’s a very impactful and powerful thing.”

Happy To Be Home
Wanuskewin is about protecting the future as much as preserving the past. I meet with young Indigenous people who demonstrate aspects of their cultures, once suppressed, now thriving. Tianna McCabe, a Navajo, Arapaho and Cree powwow dancer, explains the significance of every fabric and colour of her ornate regalia before hopping her way through an Old Style Fancy Shawl dance, her feet landing with each staccato beat of a drum.
As the day eases into night, I follow a group to the top of a bluff to meet Métis chef Jenni Lessard, who’s prepared our Han Wi (‘moon dinner’ in Dakota language). As well as bison tenderloin, sourced from a nearby farm and seasoned with yarrow and sage, we eat pickled spruce tips and bannock bread with chokecherry syrup. Sipping wild mint and fireweed tea, we gather around a fire, rejoined by Dr Ernie Walker to hear “a miraculous story”.

In August 2020, Walker was visiting the bison herd when he noticed a boulder protruding from a patch of vegetation the animals had worn away. Seeing a groove cut across the top of it and, brushing away the dirt, he spotted more cuts and realised what he was seeing was a petroglyph. The boulder turned out to be a ‘ribstone’, so-called because its engraved motifs represent bison ribs. Three more petroglyphs were later unearthed, as well as the stone knife used to carve them.
What the bison did when they uncovered those petroglyphs was to complete the story of Wanuskewin. “We’d always lamented that, here in the park, we’ve got [archeological sites like] buffalo jumps, teepee rings and North America’s most northerly medicine wheel, but we didn’t have any rock art,” explains Walker.
Wanuskewin is on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage designation. The discovery of the petroglyphs, Walker believes, has boosted its chances. He tells me: “The stones complete everything you’d expect to find on the Northern Plains, but you don’t usually find those things within walking distance of each other.”
Dressed in a white Stetson, blue jeans and cowboy boots, Walker retains the appearance of a young ranch hand but, after 40 years of arguing for this place, I sense he’s content to rest a little. “I’ve told this story many times before,” he says. Now, the bison have picked up Wanuskewin’s epic story and it’s time to let them tell it once again.

I’ve likely seen many others and just couldn’t identify them, but there are a lot I’ve never seen growing wild. What I’m hoping is that some of the native species I have in my garden will make their way to the nearby ravine. If I get around to it, though, I might just take a walk with some Asclepias incarnata (swamp milkweed) seeds in the fall. They certainly seem to successfully germinate in my garden whether I want them to or not (don’t have space for them to go crazy). Can’t see why they wouldn’t in a natural swamp area.

My Community
The community I was raised in has all the services a child could hope for. Education through school and music, activities like pools and parks. Sports, for example, are important to me and important to my family. I grew up playing baseball through Baseball Saskatoon, and the sport has helped me be active all throughout my childhood.
“You find that you have peace of mind and can enjoy yourself, get more sleep, and rest when you know that it was a one hundred percent effort that you gave - win or lose.” - Gordie Howe
A quote one of my baseball coaches used during a pep talk, a quote that has helped me put my best effort into my sport.
There are many camps available for kids in my community. Sci-fi camp through the U of S was one I enjoyed, and one I learned a lot from. The YMCA has a summer camp for kids at Blackstrap lake, another camp I enjoyed. This camp was basically just a mix of random activities like canoeing, archery, and wilderness survival. These camps helped me meet new people, learn, and explore nature.
Archery at YMCA Blackstrap daycamp
I play the piano, and have for most of my life. I am greatful for the countless lessons throughout my childhood, because now I am a great musician. I have always connected with music, and being able to express myself through it has helped me grow into the person I am today.

What You Need to Bring with You
Although your RV rental in Saskatoon will come with many of the essentials, there are a few things you'll need to bring yourself. Here's a checklist:
Clothing: Pack enough clothing for your trip, considering the weather conditions. Don't forget comfortable shoes for hiking and outdoor activities.
Food and Snacks: While your RV's kitchen is fully equipped, you'll still need to bring food, spices, and snacks for your trip.
Camping Gear: If you plan to camp outside the RV, bring items like sleeping bags, camping chairs, and a flashlight.
Personal Items: Don't forget your toiletries, sunscreen, and other items. Some RVs may provide these, but checking in advance is a good idea.
This simple checklist will help you prepare for your road trip and ensure you have everything.
Additional Costs of RV Rentals in Saskatoon
It's important to know that the price of RV rentals in Saskatoon often includes more than just the cost of renting the vehicle. Additional fees may include:
Insurance: Most rental companies offer insurance options to protect you during your trip. Be sure to ask about coverage details and whether you need additional insurance.
Mileage Charges: Many RV rentals have a mileage limit. You may have to pay an extra charge if you exceed the limit. Ask about mileage policies before renting.
Cleaning Fees: Some rental companies charge a cleaning fee, especially if the RV isn't returned in a tidy condition. Make sure to clean the RV before returning it to avoid additional charges.
Equipment Rentals: Some rental companies charge an additional fee for extras such as outdoor furniture, GPS, or entertainment packages.
Make sure to inquire about all potential costs upfront so there are no surprises when it's time to pay.

Understanding Lease Agreements
Leasing a property, whether residential, commercial, or industrial, is a common practice for businesses and individuals alike. The terms of a lease dictate how long a tenant can occupy a property, how much they’ll pay, and what responsibilities are assigned to both the tenant and the landlord. Whether you’re considering leasing for the first time or are a seasoned renter, understanding the nuances of lease agreements is essential. What is a Lease Agreement? Lease agreement is a formal contract between the landlord and the tenant that defines the terms under which the tenant may use the property. This agreement includes essential details such as the duration of the lease, rent payment terms, responsibilities for property upkeep, and any limitations on the property's use. Leases can vary significantly depending on the type of property. Residential leases often differ from commercial leases, with the latter typically being more complex due to the nature of the business operations involved. Understanding the terms of your lease is crucial in order to avoid misunderstandings and protect both parties involved. Key Components of a Lease Agreement Several key elements must be included in any lease agreement to ensure that it is enforceable and protects both parties’ interests: Lease Term. The length of time the tenant will occupy the property. This could range from a few months to several years, depending on the nature of the lease. Rent and Payment Terms. The amount of rent, due dates, and any penalties for late payments. The lease should specify whether the rent includes utilities or if those are separate. Maintenance and Repairs. Clarifying who is responsible for the maintenance of the property is critical. This includes routine upkeep, as well as major repairs, such as fixing structural issues or replacing appliances. Use of Property. Many leases restrict the use of the property to certain activities or businesses. For example, a commercial lease may only allow certain types of business operations. Termination Clause. This section outlines how either party can terminate the lease early and under what circumstances, including penalties or fees for early termination. The Importance of Survey Services One of the critical factors to consider when entering into a lease agreement, particularly for commercial properties, is understanding the exact boundaries and legal rights associated with the property. This is where survey services in Saskatoon can play a vital role. A land surveyor will provide accurate measurements of the property, ensuring that there is no ambiguity about property lines and boundaries. Survey services in Saskatoon can help clarify various elements of a lease, especially in situations where a tenant may need to make alterations to the leased property. A property survey ensures that any changes made to the property do not encroach on neighboring properties or violate zoning laws. Additionally, in cases where the tenant is leasing land for a business, such as for parking or outdoor storage, having a clear survey can prevent legal issues related to property usage. Leasing a property is an important commitment that comes with responsibilities and expectations for both tenants and landlords. Whether you’re leasing for the first time or renewing an existing lease, it’s essential to fully understand the terms of the agreement and ensure that everything is in order. Consulting with professionals, such as those offering survey services in Saskatoon, can help mitigate risks and provide clarity in cases involving complex property lines and land use. Back where I came from
Charlie and Rooster were sat in the living room with Colt when they heard their fathers truck pull up. Charlie took a big sip of beer finishing it off then going to the kitchen and opening the fridge door as she heard her father.
"Rooster, Charlie, you home?" He called as he opened the door.
"Yes, sir. Living room!" Rooster called as he opened the door and Charlie grabbed the beer out of the fridge turning around and opening the beer waiting for her father's reaction.
"I thought one of you were gonna take a look at that tractor and try and see what was--." Beau started as he rubbed his eye.
"Check it out. Colt's home." Rooster said as Colt stood up and shrugged as Beau looked at Rooster and Charlie then looked back at Colt.
"What the hell are you doing here? I thought you were up in Canada playing amateur football." Beau asked taking his hat off and putting his hands on his lower back.
"Uh, semi-pro. Yeah, I was playing for the Saskatoon Cold. It's like the Miami Heat, except.... you know, cold." Colt said putting his hat on backwards as Beau gave an amused smile
"Yeah, we know. We also heard you got arrested for flashing Shania Twain while you were up there." Beau said as Charlie chuckled walking into the living room to stand by her father.
"How'd even you hear about that?" Colt scoffed while Rooster chuckled.
"It was in the paper. "Former high school phenom Colt Bennett shows Shania his Twain"." Rooster said as Charlie chuckled again.
"First time you made the front page since the state finals. I put it on the fridge." Beau smiled as he walked past Charlie and Colt to go to the stairs.
"All right, listen to this. I-- They got this hotel up there made entirely of ice, okay? And so, I'm a little drunk, and I... and I see this sweet ice sculpture of Wayne Gretzky. And naturally, I think, I could take a wizz on him." Colt said as Charlie sat down on the couch shaking her head.
"It's like when you go to the fancy restaurant and they put the ice in the pisser. You know, you get to spray it up and melt it down." Rooster said
"Yeah." Colt chuckled.
"So, I'm taking a piss in The Great One's mouth. And I almost got a hole all the way through the back of his head. He shoots, he scores. When I slip... Bam! I slide balls first into Miss Shania Twain." Colt said as Beau and Charlie just stare at him.
"Did she look down and say, That don't impress me much?" Rooster asked as Colt smiled.
"No. She said, that makes me feel like a woman." Colt laughed
"What are you doing here?" Beau asked putting his hands on his back.
"What? Can't just stop in and say hi to my family?" Colt asked
"I remember last time you stopped by. Said you were done with football. You wanted to start helping out around here. How long ago was that, Rooster, Charlie? About six years?" Beau asked them
"Yes, sir. It was on my birthday. We we're all supposed to go to dinner but you guys just fought the whole time. Hey, I got ten bucks anyone in here knows how old I am." Rooster said as Beau and Colt continued to stare at each other.
"35." Charlie said and Rooster continued to stare at his brother and father.
"Then you snuck out of here in the middle of the night. Took your brothers truck. Left the damn gate open." Beau pointed at Rooster.
"Okay, that wasn't my fault. Rooster was chasing after me yelling, that's my truck! And so, I just assumed he was gonna close it." Colt said as Rooster just swished his drinking around.
"Our cows were all over town. I found one of them standing in a Sizzler parking lot just staring at a poster of a rib-eye." Beau said as Colt smiled
"I'm 35." Rooster said
"I said that!" Charlie stood up as Colt put his foot on the table.
"What the fuck is on your feet?" Beau asked looking down at his uggs.
"They're boots." Colt looked him confused
"Those are not boots." Beau said rubbing his neck.
"They're Uggs. That's Australian for boots." Colt said
"They're ladies shoes."
"Well, Tom Brady wears 'em."
"Yeah, well, Tom Brady gets away with a lot of shit."
"Fine. You know what? That's.. you made fun of my clothes. You made fun of my career, you made fun of my childhood. You got anything else you wanna take a shot at?"
"That's a stupid haircut."
"All right. You know what? This was a bad idea. I can't stay here with him, he's impossible." Colt said putting his hat back on and grabbing his bags.
"Same old colt, I can't stay here, he's impossible. I can't stay here in this school, the coach won't let me start. I can't stay with this girl, she doesn't like it when I cheat on her." Beau smiled as Colt headed for the door.
"Well, speaking of women who don't like being cheated on, how's mom doing?" Colt asked turning back to Beau.
"All right, this is getting good. I'm gonna grab a beer. No punches till of get back." Rooster said getting up and going to the kitchen.
"Don't go making accusations when you don't know the whole story." Beau told him.
"Oh, really? What's the whole story, dad?"
"That's none of your damn businesses."
"There we go. There we go."
"Why are you here?"
"I got a tryout.... With a new semi-pro team in Denver. And I just need a place to stay for a couple days. As soon as I make the team, I'm out of here."
"Are you kidding me? Are you still chasing this dream?"
"I'm a football player."
"You're not a football player, Colt. You're a guy dreamin' about being a football player. You're 34."
"Oh, sure, you know how old he is." Rooster said from the kitchen.
"Uh, 34 is still young to be a quarterback."
"That's your three concussions talking."
"I don't remember three concussions. You know, has it ever crossed your mind that you might not be right about everything? Cause you were just as sure when you said the moon landing was fake."
"A flag cannot ripple in the vacuum of space."
"Well, you're wrong about me. I can still make it. I just need a chance."
"Every opportunity you've had.... I'm talking about high school, college, and then the pros... you've either smoked it or drank it or screwed it away."
"Well, next time it'll be different."
"That ought to put that on your tombstone. Here lies Colt Bennett. Next time it'll be different. He died wearing lady boots." Beau said as Colt looked at the ground.
%
"Seriously? I can't even shut a truck door right?" Colt asked as they walked into their mothers bar.
"I'm sure you could. Why you chose not to is beyond me." Beau said
"Hey, I'm gonna hit the head. But in case you guys run out of things to fight about.... Colts jeans cost 85 bucks." Rooster said
"What kind of dipshit pays 85 bucks for a pair of jeans?" Beau asked
"My work is done." Rooster clapped his hands and walked away.
"Hey, bartender... can we get a couple of cold ones, please?" Beau asked as they walked up to the bar.
"Not a chance, Beau." The woman said not turning around.
"Not even for your favorite son?" Colt asked
"Colt?" Maggie, their mother turned around
"Hi, mama." Colt said
"Don't you hi mama me. Give me a hug." Maggie walked over to him
"Aw!" Colt said picked her up.
"You're sight for sore eyes. Especially now since you cut your hair and shaved off that stupid goatee." Maggie told pointing at his clean shaven face.
"Oh, no. That was a playoff beard. You know I can't grow here." Colt rubbed his chin as Maggie just smiled at him.
"You ready for your tryout?" Maggie asked walking behind the bar as Charlie sat down on the bar stool.
"You knew about this?" Beau looked at her.
"Yeah, I stay in touch with my son. You should try it." Maggie sarcastically told him.
"Can we just get those beers?" Beau asked sitting down beside Charlie.
"You have any complaints about the service, take it up with the owner." Maggie told him as she poured a drink into a cup.
"The owner's kind of a pain in my ass." Beau smiled at her.
"That's why the owner lives in her own Airstream now." Maggie told him pouring tequila into the cup.
"What time you leaving tomorrow?" Charlie turned to Colt who still just stood there.
"Oh, early. Tryout's at 2:00." Colt told her leaning against the bar as she nodded her head.
"About the time I'll be getting a beer." Beau said tapping the table.
"Once you're on the team, I'll make the drive every Sunday." Maggie told him
"Oh, uh, the games aren't on Sunday. Sunday's reserved for the high school girls lacrosse team." Colt told them as Charlie just looked at him.
"Phew! I just had me one of them pees that's better than sex. You know, a pee-gasm." Rooster walked over making Colt and Charlie turn to him looking at him like he was stupid.
"You know, its possible you're not having sex right." Charlie told him grabbing the beer that was set in front of her and taking a sip.
"Well, it's also possible you're not peeing right." Rooster told her
"Hey, Ma, could you grab me a beer?" Rooster asked Maggie.
"Sure, darlin'." Maggie said looking back down at the drink she was making.
"Hank, I'll give you five bucks for that beer." Beau turned to the guy beside him handing him a five dollar bill.
"Done." Hank sat the drink down taking the money.
"Cheers, Maggie." Beau said getting up from the bar and turning to Rooster.
"Come on. Let's grab a table." Beau told him and walked away.
"Oh, yeah, good, just the two of us. Sit and talk for a while." Rooster said and slowly turned following after him.
"Would you like a beer?" Maggie asked Colt.
"Ma, I got a tryout tomorrow. Make it a whiskey." Colt said and Charlie shook her head taking a sip of her beer getting up and walking to the table that Beau and Rooster sat at.
When they got back home they found one of there cows water had broke. Charlie was stood in the barn with Rooster when Beau and Colt walked in.
"How she doing'." Beau asked as Rooster was making a knot in a rope.
"It's a breech." Charlie told him.
"Oh, damn it." Colt shook his head.
"Alright, Colt. Get over here and wash your arm." Beau told him making him stop in his tracks as Charlie and Rooster laughed.
"What? Why do I have to put my arm in her? Why can't Rooster or Charlie do it?" Colt asked pointing at his siblings.
"Because Rooster's not good at it and Charlie's arm are too short." Beau reasoned.
"Of course I'm good at it."
"Last time you lost you're watch in there." Beau said making Rooster make a face.
"Who's care? It's waterproof." Rooster said making Charlie shake her head.
"Come on, Colt. Hustle up." Beau told Colt who was still washing his arm.
"I'm coming. God, wait, why can't you hook her up and I'll just pull the rope?" Colt asked taking his flannel off.
"You know, that's the beauty of having somebody beggin' for a place to stay. You can't ask 'em to pay rent, but you can ask 'em to stick their arm up a cow's address. So, come on." Beau said and Colt grabbed the rope from Rooster and got started.
"Alright, Carla. Here we go, girl. You're gonna be fine." Colt said as she started mooing.
"You don't have to make love to her, just get the calf out of there so we can raise it and slaughter it." Beau said and Colt started grunting.
"Ew! Forgot how warm it is." Colt said making Rooster laugh, "All right, I got her legs."
"Good. Feet will be right at the end of those."
"Thank you, I know what I'm doing. God, do I look like an idiot?"
"Well, you're shoulder deep in a cow and ankle deep in her shit, so.." Charlie laughed.
"Man, my uggs." Colt moved his feet around.
"Hey, if you feel a Timex up in there, grab it for me, huh?" Rooster asked him.
"You know what? You can't see it, but I'm flippin' you the bird right now." Colt told him making Rooster raise his eyebrows.
"Alright, one loop for each foot."
"Yeah, I got it!"
"Oh, you got it? Well then start pulling!"
"You know, did it ever occur to you to encourage me instead of riding me all the time?" Colt asked as he slowly started to pull his arm out.
"If I rode you, it was 'cause you were the only one in this family that had any smarts or talent." Beau told him.
"We're standing right here, Dad." Rooster raised his hand as Beau looked over.
"I'm aware of that, Jameson." Beau said before turning back to Colt.
"What do you mean we? He rode me just as hard as Colt, if not harder. You're the odd man out, brother." Charlie said patting Rooster's back. When she looked back over at Beau, she could of swore she saw a smile appear, but it disappeared as soon as it appeared.
"We all scarified so you had a chance to succeed. But you weren't willing to work for it. So, here we are!" Beau continued to yell at Colt.
"You know, where do you get off being so high and mighty and when you could barely pay the bills around here?" Colt asked him as he continued to try and pull the calve out.
"Who told you that?" Beau asked him as Colt looked over at Rooster.
"I'm allowed to say things. I'm a person. I'm gonna go hang out with Heather." Rooster turned and walked out.
"Yeah, I'm not gonna go hang out with Heather, I'm gonna... haven't quite figured that out." Charlie told them and turned and walked out of the barn leaving the two of them arguing. 30 minutes later Colt and Beau walked into the house where Rooster sat on the counter reading something and Charlie sat at the table on her phone.
"Rooster, Charlie, we are the proud parents of a beautiful 85-pound boy." Beau said as they walked in and Colt walked over to the sink washing his arm off.
"It was incredible. That calf was born still. I gave it CPR and I brought it back to life." Colt said rinsing his arms in the sink as Charlie just stared at him confused.
"CPR?" She asked and Colt nodded his head.
"Wow, Colt. You had your arm up a cow and made out with a calf. You know, diddle a chicken, you're in the farmer's Hall of Fame." Rooster said making them all chuckle.
"I'm gonna go back out and check on him, make sure that calf is sucking. Colt. Good job." Beau said as he walked out the front door making them all freeze and stare at the closing door.
"Did he just.." Colt asked
"Yeah. He just said, "Good job." And then I think he felt nauseous and went outside to get some air." Rooster pointed at the door.
"I'll be damned, Colt. Think you just broke our father." Charlie stood up patting his back as Rooster and Colt smiled at her.
"I think the last time he told me good job was when I learned how to walk." Colt said cleaning his hand off with a rag.
"I think his exact words were, "Jesus finally" You know what you should do to really mess with him? Go outside, look him straight in the eye, and say I love you, big fella." Rooster said hopping off the counter.
"Yeah, and then you can go tell 'em that you're a democrat." Charlie said taking a swig of her beer as the other two laughed with her.
"Oh, god. I don't think washing helped at all." Colt said after smelling his arm.
"Yeah, that smell never really goes away. You know, my advice is when it comes to putting body parts into livestock, you always wanna use the same arm. This one... is for pregnant cows and consstipated horses. This one for eatin', whistlin', and shakin' hands. Unless I don't like the guy, and then I use this one." Rooster held his hands up as Charlie and Colt watched from the table.
"Yeah, that was not the vagina I thought I'd be in tonight. You know, all in all, it was a good day." Colt said as Charlie shook her head and Rooster sat down beside her, taking her beer from her and drinking it.
"Even prisions fun when you're just visitin'. You get to talk on that phone. Lady next to you puts her boobies up against the glass." Rooster said as Colt started looking through the book Rooster was looking through earlier.
"If it's so bad here, why don't either of you just leave?" Colt asked making the two other siblings stare at him.
"You're kidding, right?" Rooster asked, "After you left, that wasn't much of an option. Dad needed someone here to help him run the ranch." Rooster shrug.
"So you felt like you were stuck? Well, you must think I'm-" Colt went to say.
"Spoiled? Selfish? Irresponsible? Kind of a wuss?" Rooster asked as Charlie shook her head at the two.
"Okay. I was gonna say "selfish." but-" Rooster cut Colt off again.
"Conceited? Stubborn? Full-blown alcoholic? But you were a hell of a football player. And you had to go. I was proud of you. You're my little brother, amigo." Rooster told Colt.
"Thank you. You know, I'm proud of you, too. And you Charlie." Colt pointed at the two.
"Yeah? For what?" Rooster asked and Colt just stared at him.
"You know, I really didn't think there was gonna be a follow-up question. But I can say, I proud of Charlie. Just in general. You've done so many great things." Colt nodded with a smile.
"Alright, well I'm gonna go help dad with Carla. Unless, of course, you want to?" Rooster looked between his other two siblings.
"Oh no. You do it. I can't make eye contact with her for a while." Colt shook his arm as Rooster and Charlie laughed.
%
Charlie walked down the stairs and found her mother, in her fathers button up, and Colt washing his arm in the sink again.
"Hey, mama, you making coffee?" Charlie asked and she nodded her head.
"You want some?" Maggie asked as Colt dried his arm.
"Yea." Charlie yawned sitting down at the counter.
"No, surprised to see her?" Colt asked and Charlie just shook her head.
"Her and dad fight, then...yea." Charlie shrugged at him as he shook his head.
"You ready for your try out tomorrow?" Maggie asked Colt as she poured them all coffee.
"Yea, I think so, I'm a little nervous." Colt rubbed his neck.
"Well, that's good right? It means you still care." She asked and he just nodded his head, "How about I make you some of that pre-game pasta you like?" Maggie asked him making him chuckle.
"Thanks, mom, I'm not a kid anymore." Colt told her putting the cowboy hat on the counter on his head.
"How about a pancake with a whipped-cream face?" She asked and he smiled.
"Oh, yes, please." He said taking a sip of his coffee.
"Can you make me one to, mama?" Charlie asked her and Maggie nodded and smiled at her.
"Blue skies. God, I never thought I'd hate blue skies. You know, I don't think it's rained here since you left." Maggie said reached into the cabinets under the island.
"Yea, Dad told me it's been kinda rough around here."
"Kinda? You up to speed on everything here?" Charlie turned in her seat towards him.
"Well, obviously not." He pointed at their mother.
"This is the worst year that anybody can remember. I mean.. he even had to let Pedro go." Maggie explained.
"Wait, so it's just him, Rooster, and you?" Colt pointed at Charlie who nodded her head as she took a sip of her coffee, "Oh..wait. He's not gonna lose this place, is he? That'll kill him." Colt set the hat down on the island.
"No. Keeping this place is killin' him. He's been out there hours already. He hardly ever sleeps." Maggie said as Colt looked out the window. Maggie went to the fridge and opened it before sighing and shutting it, "Sorry. Can't put the face on the pancake. Your father and I used all the whipped cream up last night." Maggie said as Charlie choked on her coffee. Swallowing her coffee she set it on the counter and went up to her room and got ready.
%
Beau, Rooster, and Charlie standing around Beau's truck. They had popped the hood so Rooster could find out what was wrong with it.
"Yea, it needs a new head gasket. All right, I'll order one online." Rooster said as he put dipstick back in the truck.
"No. We'll go over to Henderson's to get one. If they don't have it we'll go someplace else." Beau told him.
"No, Amazon will have it here in 24 hours." Rooster told him as Beau shook his head.
"See? That's what wrong with your generation."
"Oh, good. I was wondering what's wrong with us." Rooster said wiping his hands.
"You're a bunch of lazy bastards. You never wanna leave the house. What're you gonna do when North Korea comes knocking on the door? You gonna order a gun on Amazon?" Beau asked them and Charlie smiled.
"No, I'm gonna go to the gun rack in the truck, or the gun rack next to the fridge, or the gun rack in the bathroom, or the second gun rack in the bathroom." Charlie chuckled to herself before turning when she heard footsteps. Colt walked up limping.
"Hey." He said walking passed them.
"Hey, how'd it go?" Rooster asked him.
"Yea, it could've gone better." He limped onto the porch.
"What do you mean?" Charlie asked him and he dropped his bag
"I mean I didn't make it."
"Damn, Colt. I'm sorry." Rooster apologized, "You know what you could do? Strap on those Uggs and try out for cheerleader." Rooster told him making Charlie laugh.
"Screw you. So.. anyway I don't know what my next step's gonna be but.. I thought, if it's alright with you, I could stick around here for a while." Colt said.
"You're serious?" Beau asked as Rooster put the tool box up.
"Yea. Guess you were right. I'm done with football." Colt shrugged.
"Wow, I didn't realize I'd raised a quitter." Beau said making Colt turn to him.
"Really? You've been telling me to give up for years."
"You've got no sense of humor at all." Beau shook his head, "Look, for what it's worth, I'd be happy have you around here and I'd rather not see you cripple yourself." Beau told him.
"Wait. You just said something nice to him and yesterday you said good job. Are you dying?" Rooster asked Beau making him chuckle.
"One more thing. Here." Colt handed Beau an envelope and Beau pulled out a bunch of money.
"Where'd you get this?" Beau asked him.
"Sold my championship ring. Figure all the money you gave me over the years, it's the least I could do." Colt told him and Beau shoved the money back in the enveople and handed it to colt.
"No, thanks."
"Uh, Dad, we could use that money."
"Yea, I want you to have it."
"Do I look like some charity case?" Beau asked.
"Oh, come on. I'm just trying to help."
"We've got a country full of people with their hand out. All I want is what I earn. All anybody is gonna do for me is dig a six foot hole in the ground and drop me in it."
"-a six foot hole in the ground and drop me in it." All four of them finished the last part together.
"Well, it ain't gonna be here 'cause you're about to lose this place."
"This place isn't yours to save."
"Just swallow your damn pride and take the damn money!" Colt yelled.
"Not gonna happen."
"God, you are such a stubborn old son of a bitch!" Colt threw the envelope at him.
"Listen son.." Beau said getting face to face with Colt, "I'm not too old to kick your ass."
"It's like my birthday all over again." Rooster looked at Charlie who agreed.
"You don't wanna start this with me, Dad."
"I didn't start this. You did." Beau pointed at his chest and Colt smacked his hand away.
"Don't touch me." Colt said as Rooster and Charlie put their arms between them.
"All right, relax, guys." Rooster told them.
"No. I started this? I started this? You drove me out of here! And then you drove mom out of here! Hell, I left the gate, even the cows tried to get away form you!" Colt shoved Beau as it started to rain around them.
"You're standing awful tall for a man who came crawling back on his hands and knees!" Beau said as they started to shove each other.
"Hey. Hey. HEY. HEY." Rooster and Charlie stared yelling.
"What?" Beau and Colt yelled at them and Rooster pointed up making them both realize it was raining.
"It's rainin'." Rooster smiled and Beau raised his arms in the sky.
"Screw you, Al Gore!" He yelled.
Rooster, Colt, and Charlie all high fived each other before running around Beau trying to get away from each other. They hugged each other out of celebration.
"Hell yea!" Charlie high fived Rooster again.
