PDP meeting underway to discuss Centre's invitation for talks SRINAGAR: A crucial meet of the PDP's political affairs committee (PAC) - the highest decision-making body of the party - is underway here on Sunday to discuss the invitation of the Centre to regional political parties of Jammu and Kashmir for talks. The meet began at 11 am at PDP president Mehbooba Mufti''s ''Fairview'' residence at Gupkar. The PAC, headed by Mehbooba, includes party leaders Abdul Rehman Veeri, Mohammad Sartaj Madni, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, Mehboob Beg, Naeem Akhtar, Surinder Choudhary, Yashpal Sharma, Master Tassaduq Hussain, Sofi Abdul Gaffar, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, Aasiya Naqash, Firdous Ahmad Tak, Mohammad Khursheed Alam and Muhammad Yusuf Bhat. Madni was released from a six-month-long preventive detention on Saturday, hours after Mehbooba received the invitation, over phone, for the meeting. He said the PAC meeting will take a final call on the party''s participation in the meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on June 24. The prime minister''s meeting with all political parties from Jammu and Kashmir is part of the Centre''s initiatives to bolster political processes, including holding assembly elections, in the Union Territory. Invitations were sent out to 14 political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir, including four former chief ministers, for participation in a high-level meeting to be chaired by the prime minister, which is expected to set the road map for holding assembly elections in the Union Territory. SRINAGAR:Days after the Public Safety Act (PSA) was slapped against former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers – Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, bureaucrat-turned-politician Shah Faesal has been booked under the stringent law, sources said here on Saturday.

The former IAS topper is the seventh mainstream politician of Kashmir who has been booked under the PSA which allows detention from three months to two years without a trial.

Earlier, senior Peoples’ Democratic Party leader Naeem Akhtar was booked under the Public Safety Act. National Conference General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar and senior PDP leader Sartaj Madni, uncle of Mehbooba Mufti, have also been booked under the PSA.

Omar’s father, three-time former Chief Minister and sitting MP, Farooq Abdullah is already booked under the PSA and lodged at his Srinagar residence, which has been designated as a sub jail.

SRINAGAR: India has extended the detention of four political leaders in Occupied Kashmir who had been held by authorities since August to quell dissent after the Modi government illegally annexed the region, two senior officials said on Friday.

The latest detention order was issued under the draconian Public Safety Act, which allows detention without charges for up to two years, the officials in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir state, told Reuters.

The four included two former chief ministers of Occupied-Kashmir, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, and two regional party leaders, Ali Mohmmad Sagar and Sartaj Madni, the officials said.

They were originally held under a law that allowed a maximum of six months, and their detention was about to expire.

“The law does not allow preventive detention beyond six months. So they had to be either released or booked under PSA,” said one government official on condition of anonymity.

“Several other regional leaders who have also completed six months under preventive detention are likely to be booked under PSA,” the second official said.

The officials requested anonymity due to the sensitivity over security matters. Reuters sought a response from the Home Ministry, but its spokesman was unavailable for comment.

The home ministry in a reply before the parliament on Thursday said 389 people in Kashmir were already booked under PSA since August last year.

Some of those detained have been put under house arrest, while others have been taken elsewhere.

Rights group Amnesty International has described the PSA as a “lawless law”.

Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija Mufti confirmed her mother’s detention under the law on Twitter.

“Slapping the draconian PSA… is expected from an autocratic regime that books nine-year-olds for ‘seditious remarks’. Question is how much longer will we act as bystanders as they desecrate what this nation stands for?” said Iltija in a tweet.

The removal of autonomy and subsequent crackdown in Occupied-Kashmir drew international criticism, and diplomats from several countries say they have raised human rights concerns with India’s foreign ministry.

Last month, the Supreme Court rebuked the federal government for shutting down the Internet and telecommunications in the state.
