UM Afrobeats Playlist: Favorite Remixes
Tumblr media
2016 has come and gone and clearly so have our Afrobeats Playlist! All that is about to change....because I, Amandah Opoku and Shade Alegbeleye are back! Just like PSquare with their single “Away”! 2017 has already marked an incredible year for Afrobeats music, with anticipated music releases from Mr Eazi and hopefully some new music from the Starboy clan and Eugy. As we await these music releases, Shade and I are taking a look back at some of our favorite remixes. Check out our playlist below and let us know if we missed any of your favorite songs!
youtube
Joey B ft. Samini & Pappy Kojo-“Otoolege” Scrolling back to the summer of 2013 where high life music was all my day every day, I'm bringing you Joey B's "Otoolege" from the vault. "Otoolege" is a term used to describe someone who does more than the usual care or love given to a woman. Sometimes its so extreme and ends up dissolving the relationship rather than making it stronger. Joey B, "Otoolege" speaks to this. Like 99.9% of the songs on my Afrobeats playlist, “Otoolege” doesn't fail to get your feet moving. The upbeat track featuring dancehall artist Samini and Pappy Kojo is a pleaser, and transforms Ofori Amponsah's original version to a club banger! As "Otoolege" was released 4 years ago, Joey B has grown up and so has his sound. The "Tonga" hitmaker, has a new refined sound that you'll fall in love the same way we did "Tonga". Check out "Otoolege" -a blast from the past because you will NOT be disappointed! By: Amandah Opoku

Kcee Ft Don Jazzy & Wizkid – “Pull Over (Remix)” It is hard to believe that this song was released back in 2013 as it still gets the crowd moving and shaking whenever it is played to date but I guess when you put Kcee, Stayboy Wizkid and Mavin Boss Don Jazzy all on the same track you can expect it to be a hit. Taken off Kcee's album Take Over, Pull Over was already a hot joint featuring Wizkid before Kcee decided to add Don Jazzy to the remix who adds a whole new flavour to the song. With its infectious beat produced by Del’B and playful lyrics, it is hard for you to stay still when this song drops and it is no surprise that “Pull Over” became a popular wedding and party song. I would not be surprised if “Pull Over” is popular for many more years to come. By: Shade Alegbeleye
youtube
Kiss Daniel ft Tiwa Savage and Davido – “Woju” (Remix) I can’t believe I nearly missed this track off my list. When Kiss Daniel released his single “Woju” it instantly become a favourite for many, making it one of Kiss Daniel’s biggest songs, so when he decided to feature two of Africa’s biggest stars on the remix you already know the “Woju” hype was not about to go away. Arguably one of the most anticipated and biggest remixes of the year, the remix was surely worth the wait as it featured Mavin Records First Lady Tiwa Savage and HKN Boss Davido who were both able to capture the theme of the song and add their own unique sound to the already popular song. The “Woju” remix topped nearly all music charts in Nigeria and it is now surprise as the three artists were able to create magic together. Woju, is a yoruba (Nigerian dialect) word that means “Check out the face” or Look at the face”. By: Shade Alegbeleye
youtube
Koker ft Olamide -“SHU! Shuperuuu!” (Kolewerk Remix) Chocolate City Music signee Koker has produced nothing but hits since he entered the music scene, but his biggest hit has to be his single "Kolewerk". Potentially one of the biggest songs of 2016, Koker featured YBNL boss Olamide on the remix to make it an even bigger hit. With catchy lyrics from Koker, Olamide dropping his usual fire and a crazy beat produced by Chocolate City in house producer Reinhard, "Kolewerk" remix is a guaranteed party starter that  gets the crowd going crazy as soon as the beat drops. If this track is not already on your playlist then you need to add it now. By: Shade Alegbeleye
youtube
Lil Kesh Feat. Davido & Olamide - “Shoki” Released in 2014, YBNL artist Lil Kesh came and took over the scene with his single "Shoki". Already a successful song on its own, Lil Kesh then added two of the hottest acts on the Nigerian music scene, his boss Olamide and Davido onto the remix which made it one of the biggest hits for 2014. Of course the song was not complete without the "Shoki" dance step which in his own right gained became massive. Just like how the Azonto dance created a buzz, so did the Shoki dance, even Missy Elliott had her dancers doing the "Shoki" in her come back video, "WTF". No African party or wedding was or is complete without someone doing the "Shoki", two years on and "Shoki" still gets the same reaction it did when it was released. By: Shade Alegbeleye
youtube
Masterkraft ft. CDQ x Davido x Olamide-“Indomie” (Remix) "A B C D Q....Masterkraft on the beat" Davido sings as he opens up Masterkraft's "Indomie" remix. With the original already a certified banger in the clubs and all around the speakers, Masterkraft recruits Mr. Davido to the remix. There's not much to say here as both the original and remix are a banger -Davido neither brings or takes anything significant away from the track! Masterkraft killed the beat! By: Amandah Opoku
youtube
Moelogo Ft Giggs – “The Baddest” “Who Is The Baddest...  Moelogo” Back in 2014, British Nigerian artist Moelogo released his single "The Baddest" to let everyone know that his name is Moelogo and he is The Baddest. An Afrobeats song for the streets, “The Baddest” quickly became a fan favourite with its infectious instrumental produced by Bayoz Muzik which was inspired by the late great Fela Kuti. Already a hot song, Moelogo then upped up the temperate by featuring UK Rap heavyweight and BET Award winner Giggs to create one of the biggest Afrobeats songs not only in the U.K. but also in Africa. With Giggs adding his energetic signature sound and Moelogo adding his stunning vocals, “The Baddest” remix, quickly became an anthem for the streets and the clubs which instantly receives a reaction as soon as the beat drops. “The Baddest” remix is one of my favourite Afrobeats songs to be released from the Afrobeats music scene in the UK. By: Shade Alegbeleye
Mr Eazi ft. Klu -“Chaskeley” Africa's new Afrobeats king has always been bringing them tunes. His remix of Fuse ODG's "Antenna" is no exception of the rule. Fuse ODG's "Antenna" is like his song "Azonto" -another track to add to your playlist of official dances. "Antenna" calls for you to dance as you would if you "do your Azonto". Mr Eazi with the help of his friend Klu releases a cover remix called "Chaskeley". Although there's the lack of an official dance, Eazi brings this infectious remix. A song to the ode of a girl playing games with his heart. He sings "this girl fine like Cinderella, I tell her I say dey love her" which is reminiscent of the same tune he sings in "Shitor" which features collaborator DJ Juls. I just don't know why a girl will be playing with Mr Eazi's heart - I've dubbed Mr Eazi the Romeo of songwriting. He knows what he wants and how to write it. This is a must check out remix! By: Amandah Opoku
youtube
Sarkodie ft. Castro -“Adonai” Sarkodie's "Adonai" is making a re-appearance on Afrobeats Playlist because of it's importance. Some reading this, may be surprised to know that there is an original version of the song due to the success of the remix featuring Castro. Check out my commentary on the track HERE By: Amandah Opoku
