Virtual University inaugurated in Sui
By our correspondent
SUI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) funded Virtual University (VU) campus in Sui was inaugurated on Thursday, a statement said.
PPL MD and CEO Syed Wamiq Bokhari said, “The only sustainable way of improving livelihoods and well-being of underserved communities in the country is by providing them access to quality education. We at PPL are proud to establish a higher education facility for the benefit of our stakeholder local communities.”
The inauguration was presided over by Balochistan home minister Mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti.  With an input of about Rs20 million by the company, plus a commitment to fund operational costs, the VU campus is equipped with an advanced computer lab to provide online courses leading to a bachelors, masters, and doctorate in a host of disciplines, including information technology, management and liberal arts. VU will be managed by Taaleem Foundation, a local civil society organisation working in the education sector.
  SECP seeks inputs on regulations
By our correspondent
KARACHI: The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), moving ahead with the implementation of recently promulgated Futures Market Act, 2016, has invited comments on the recently formulated draft Futures Exchanges (Licensing & Operations) Regulations, 2017, a statement said on Thursday.
The highlights of the draft regulations include application of fit and proper criteria to the majority shareholders, directors and senior management officers, application of code of conduct for board of directors and senior management officers and financial resource requirements of minimum paid-up capital (net of losses) of R500 million, with the condition that an existing futures exchange shall have three years to meet this threshold.
In addition, the regulations require composition of board of directors and related matters, the appointment of chief executive officer with approval of the SECP and the constitution of risk committee and appointment of chief risk officer.
‘My Karachi’ exhibition kicks off today
By our correspondent
KARACHI: The three-day “My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony” exhibition is opening today (Friday) at Karachi Expo Center amid expectations of drawing near one million visitors, a handout issued by Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) said on Thursday.
"Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, will inaugurate the 14th sequel of the expo, which showcases products/services of local as well as foreign exhibitors, providing a perfect platform for business-to-business and business-to-consumer meetings," The KCCI said in its statement.
The statement added that this year, Pakistani products/services will be displayed at around 280 stalls spread over all six halls of the Expo Center.  "Exhibitors from Russia, Belarus, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Romania, Ukraine, Malaysia, Iran and Turkey are participating in the event," the statement said and added Thailand has booked 30 stalls, while Indonesia has reserved 10 for setting up pavilions.
According to the KCCI, the vision behind the exhibition is to rebuild the image of Karachi and give positive signals to the foreign entrepreneurs that industrial and commercial activities are going on smoothly in Pakistan, particularly in Karachi.
Another objective of the exhibition is to ensure that corporate entities strengthen relationships with the foreign counterparts to supercharge trade and business activities not only in the financial center but also across the country.
EU raises duties on Chinese steel
BRUSSELS: The European Commission said on Thursday it had set ´anti-dumping´ duties on imports of hot-rolled flat steel products from China at a higher rate than those already in place, angering Beijing.
The Commission, acting on behalf of the 28 EU countries, set final duties of between 18.1 and 35.9 percent for five years for producers including Bengang Steel Plates Co, Handan Iron & Steel Co and Hesteel Co.
This compared with provisional rates imposed from October of 13.2 to 22.6 percent following a complaint lodged by European steel association Eurofer on behalf of EU producers ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel and ThyssenKrupp .
China´s commerce ministry said it was highly concerned by the decision and urged the EU to "correct its mistake", adding it would take "necessary measures" to protect its companies. The EU has already imposed duties on a wide range of steel grades to counter what EU steel producers say is a flood of steel sold at a loss due to Chinese overcapacity.
China, the world´s top producer and consumer of steel, said early last year it would shut as much as 150 million tonnes of annual production capacity over the next five years, although capacity actually rose in 2016.G20 governments recognised in September that steel overcapacity was a serious problem.
  German industrial orders rebound
Berlin: Industrial orders in Europe´s biggest economy Germany rebounded 3.4 percent in February after a sharp drop the previous month, preliminary official data showed Thursday.
New orders -- a closely watched indicator of future economic performance -- had fallen a revised 6.8 percent in January, adjusting for price, seasonal and calendar effects, said the federal statistics office Destatis.
The rebound in the indicator, which has been highly volatile in recent months, was roughly in line with analysts´ expectations. "German new orders have woken up from hibernation... partly offsetting the January shock," which had originally been calculated as a 7.4 percent drop, wrote Carsten Brzeski, chief economist of ING-DiBa bank. "The increase in new orders was exclusively driven by stronger domestic demand. Foreign demand remained stable."
  BP cuts CEO’s pay package
LONDON, : BP has cut Chief Executive Bob Dudley's pay package by 40 percent to $11.6 million, the latest British bluechip company to rein in executive pay after a wave of shareholder revolts.
The oil company has reduced Dudley´s payout and introduced changes from this year that will lower executives´ performance incentives. The cuts come after around 60 percent of shareholders opposed BP´s pay policy at last year´s annual general meeting.
Executive pay has come under growing scrutiny in Britain after a string of corporate scandals, such as the collapse of store chain BHS, which has fuelled mistrust of the high levels of pay awarded to company bosses.
BP´s pay policy changes, which will apply for the coming three years, include lowering Dudley´s maximum long-term payout to five times salary from seven times and cutting bonus payments by a quarter.
  US jobless claims tumble
Washington: New claims for jobless benefits in the United States fell precipitously at the close of March, posting their biggest weekly drop in nearly two years, the Labor Department reported Thursday. For the week ending April 1, new claims for unemployment insurance stood at a seasonally adjusted 234,000, down 25,000 from the prior week, the biggest weekly decline since April 2015. Analysts had been expecting a decrease of only 14,000 claims. The less volatile four-week moving average was 250,000 new claims, down 4,500 from the prior week.
