Santino Verbeek Reflects On Hard-Earned Debut Victory
Tumblr media
Santino Verbeek started his ONE Super Series career with a thrilling split-decision win over Juan Cervantes at ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH on 6 September.
The Dutchman battled his English opponent over three rounds and impressed the fans in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam with his heart and skill.
“I had a lot of good responses from the fight, everybody was crazy about it,” Verbeek recalled. “Some guys think Juan was the winner. But I knocked him down for a 10-8 and had a good second round, so I was confident I was the winner.”
Even though Verbeek scored a powerful knockdown in the first round, Cervantes answered the referee’s count with ease, then responded with strikes of his own. Impressed by what he saw, the Sokudo Gym representative commended his English rival's toughness and skills.
“Juan was a really tough fighter,” Verbeek said. “I gave him the eight count with a right hook. But Juan is especially a Muay Thai fighter, and I knew it would be difficult to fight him as he has a different kind of style [than] me.”
Even though Verbeek wanted a knockout win, he chose not to underestimate Cervantes’ power and experience.
“I wanted to knock him down for the second time, but my trainer told me to keep watching him because he would take a risk,” the athlete from the Netherlands said. “I thought I could take the risk and it might go wrong, or I could fight the next round and try to knock him down again.”
Instead, the 24-year-old did his best to engage the Englishman, but remained cautious of his opponent’s long knees and kicks.
“Cervantes did a good job, he kept me at a good distance, and it was difficult for me to keep the pressure on him and be close to him,” he said.
After a good first round of action by the Hoorn native, his opponent knew he had to make amends and dialed up the pressure in the second frame. But Verbeek held out till the round ended.
“The second round was also good for me, but in the last minute, Juan came back very well with a lot of knees and kicks,” the welterweight kickboxer explained. “He hurt me a few times with the knees to the body, especially to the liver, and it made me tired more quickly.”
In search of a climactic finish, Cervantes unleashed a flying knee, which wobbled the Dutchman in the third round.
Amazingly, Verbeek shrugged off the powerful hit and pressed forward.
“I didn’t want to lose in the third round, I kept fighting with my character. It was difficult, but I took it,” Verbeek recounted.
The two-time World Fighting League World Champion defended well against the subsequent barrage that followed and willed himself to the final bell after three exhausting rounds.
“You live so long for this fight, and you work so hard for it, you don’t want to give it up,” he said. “You want to give everything in your body to win.”
Verbeek may have left Ho Chi Minh City the victor, but the Dutchman believes he has something to learn from his battle against Cervantes.
“It was my first time in ONE,” he said. “I made some mistakes in the fight also. I talked to my trainers, and we know what we need to work on.”
The 24-year-old has a bright future ahead of him in ONE Super Series, and to him, this win is the first step to greater things.
“I’m looking forward to my next fight for ONE. I don’t know who will come to the welterweight division, but I want to be the next World Champion, so I will take on anybody,” Verbeek added.
Check out ONE Championship’s next event, ONE: CENTURY, the biggest World Championship martial arts event in history. No organization has ever promoted two full-scale World Championship events in one day.

Top 3 Highlights Of ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH
Tumblr media
The incredible debut of ONE Championship in Vietnam impressed martial arts fans on Friday, 6 September.
For the first time ever, fans inside the Phu Tho Indoor Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City got a taste of the world-class striking that ONE Super Series delivers with the promotion’s first show in the country, ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH.
The night’s spectacular action included a World Title bout, young ascending Vietnamese talents, and even light heavyweight movers and shakers.
Now, we look back at the three most thrilling moments from this fantastic event.
Santino Verbeek Survives Thriller To Put Away Juan Cervantes
Tumblr media
Santino Verbeek had to give everything to pull out the win against a tested veteran like Juan Cervantes.
In the early rounds, the Dutchman showed little fear of his opponent. He moved forward and consistently unloaded punches.
At one point, Verbeek’s right hand connected with the Englishman’s temple and raised caution in Cervantes.
Verbeek then caught his 32-year-old adversary with a quick one-two combination and sent him to the ground. But the Northern Kings Gym representative answered the referee’s count and shrugged it off.
The Dutchman went back to his corner after the first round feeling confident, but the complexity of the match soon changed.
Verbeek could no longer evade the punches of Cervantes, and the length and reach of the Newcastle native began to seriously trouble the Dutchman. He found himself on the defense against punches, kicks, and even some brilliant flying knees.
Both men went for the finish in round three. Cervantes unleashed more spectacular flying knees, but Verbeek’s sturdy chin held up. In return, the WKTA Muay Thai World Champion threw his trademark rights.
In the end, it went to the judges’ scorecards, and Verbeek triumphed with the majority decision win.
Bi “Killer Bee” Nguyen Blows Away Puja “The Cyclone” Tomar
Tumblr media
Bi “Killer Bee” Nguyen entered the ring to rapturous applause in Ho Chi Minh City.
She parlayed her hometown favorite status to push past Indian wushu champion Puja “The Cyclone” Tomar in their atomweight Muay Thai clash.
Tomar kept things close in the first round with her southpaw stance and swung strikes at the Vietnamese-American.
Tactical in her approach, Nguyen wisely stayed outside of the wushu specialist’s range. She only stepped forward to land shots when she saw an opening, and the first round ended with neither woman holding a decisive lead.
Tomar started the second stanza with renewed aggression, but Nguyen again evaded her attacks, and an overhand left from “Killer Bee” stung the Muzaffarnagar native.
Confidence grew for Nguyen as she scored more consistently and caught the Indian hero several times with crisp combinations.
In the driver’s seat, “Killer Bee” took full control of the match. The Heritage Muay Thai athlete pressed forward and locked Tomar up in the clinch. Then she delivered punishing knees to her opponent.
The contest came to a close, and Nguyen’s relentless offense earned her the split-decision win.
Nong-O Successfully Defends World Title
Tumblr media
Nong-O Gaiyanghadao’s legendary status is now bigger following his win at ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH.
The Singapore-stationed Thai successfully retained his ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title against Brice “The Truck” Delval.
The Algerian phenom looked fearless as he lunged forward and tested the World Champion with his ranged kicks and sharp jabs in the opening rounds.
Several times it looked as if Delval built up a steady rhythm and would use that to assert control.
Nong-O, however, reminded everyone of his Muay Thai mastery. As the battle continued into the later rounds, the Thai legend expertly evaded Delval’s strikes on the outside and peppered him with right hooks.
The sudden change of pace - along with getting stung by a few hard hits - shook Delval’s confidence. Nong-O could taste the victory and his conviction only grew from there.
The Evolve representative pressed forward and delivered bruising kicks to his opponent’s abdomen. Tired and drained of his stamina, “The Truck” used his range and some spinning back fists to fend off the Thai’s onslaught.
It mattered little as the contest ended and the outcome went to the hands of the ringside judges.
Nong-O finished the bout with a split-decision win and kept the gold around his waist. This victory pushed the Thai’s professional record to an astonishing 260-54-1.

Saemapetch Fairtex Wants to Earn Title Shot With Win Over Kulabdam Sor. Jor. Piek Uthai
Tumblr media
Former ONE World Title challenger Saemapetch Fairtex wants nothing more than to earn another shot at ONE Super Series gold. If he beats his next opponent, he may very well get it.
Saemapetch faces Thai compatriot and #3-ranked bantamweight Muay Thai contender Kulabdam “Left Meteorite” Sor. Jor. Piek Uthai in the main event of ONE: FULL BLAST, a tape-delayed event from the Singapore Indoor Stadium which airs this Friday, 28 May.
The #1-ranked contender at bantamweight, Saemapetch says every victory brings him closer to a rematch with reigning ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao.
“I would say each and every fight is important for me. At this stage, every win matters, and I’m looking to bring home this victory against a tough opponent,” Saemapetch said.
“Of course, I’m looking for another opportunity at the world title. That’s my goal. I was born for this. I was born to be a champion.”
Against Kulabdam, Saemapetch faces a worthy opponent. Kulabdam is a two-time former Lumpinee Stadium World Champion, and one of the most dangerous Muay Thai fighters on the roster.
Kulabdam earned the nickname “Left Meteorite” for the incredible power in his straight left, and a series of impressive knockouts at Bangkok’s prestigious Channel 7 Stadium. He is one of the most dynamic young strikers with an explosive, fan-friendly style that produces exhilarating finishes.
Saemapetch knows how dangerous Kulabdam is, but remains confident he will emerge on top.
“He’s very strong and obviously very dangerous. He has powerful punches. But I think I’m faster than he is, so that’s an area I want to exploit. I’ll use my speed to my advantage,” Saemapetch said.
“I’m not taking him lightly, by any means. I’m confident I’m going to get the victory. One thing is for certain, I will give it my best, win or lose.”
ONE: FULL BLAST features a mix of exciting martial arts contests for fans who crave action. Also seeing time in the Circle are fighters such as “The Hunter” Xie Wei, Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly, and kickboxing star Santino Verbeek.
Saemapetch is excited to showcase his skills once again on the global stage of ONE Championship.
“I’m proud to represent Thailand on the global stage. That’s one of my biggest motivations to compete at this level, to bring honor and glory to my country,” Saemapetch said.

Nong-O Triumphant After Tiring Test Against Brice Delval
Tumblr media
At ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH, Nong-O Gaiyanghadao faced the toughest challenger in his ONE Super Series career.
Last Friday, 6 September, Brice “The Truck” Delval drove the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion to the end of the road in their five-round clash inside the Phu Tho Indoor Stadium in Vietnam.
The 32-year-old Thai might have earned the nod to clinch a split-decision win, but in the aftermath, he admitted that a victory seemed uncertain.
“He was bigger and very strong. It was a really challenging fight for me, and I found it to be very exhausting too,” Nong-O said. “I have so much respect for my opponent and was honored to share the ring with him.”
The 20-year-old Algerian did not hesitate against the more experienced Thai legend.
Delval exploited his 7-centimeter height advantage in his toe-to-toe exchanges with the World Champion. At one point, the S1 Muay Thai World Champion executed a push kick that sent Nong-O backward and down to the canvas.
Although things were not going exactly as planned, the Evolve representative fell back on his training.
“Every time I fight, I always prepare myself mentally for the fact that my opponents will be incredibly strong and capable, so I am always ready to handle situations like these,” he explained.
Up against adversity, the Thai bantamweight seized the opportunity to remind everyone why he has no equal.
Nong-O refused to let Delval bait him and cleverly found holes in the defense of the young Algerian phenom.
Despite not getting the finish he wanted, Nong-O knew he put his best effort in for fans in Vietnam. The Singapore-based sensation showed visible relief as the announcer read the scores.
“Every time I win, it is always an incredibly happy moment for me,” he said. “I am proud to come out on top and that everyone watching gets to see me overcome a very large and difficult opponent.”
The Thai hero does not wish to rest on his laurels and believes he can be better in his next contest. He has laid out the welcome mat for future challengers.
“I am proud of myself for being able to perform to the best of my abilities for the fans, and those who are supporting me and helping me to achieve this – it feels good to make them happy,” Nong-O stated. “However, for my next fight, I will definitely need to train even harder.”
Check out ONE Championship’s next event, ONE: CENTURY, the biggest World Championship martial arts event in history. No organization has ever promoted two full-scale World Championship events in one day.
But The Home Of Martial Arts breaks new ground as it features 28 World Champions, four World Title bouts, three World Grand Prix Championship Finals, and four World Champion versus World Champion matches.

3 Lessons Learned From ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH
Tumblr media
On Friday, 6 September, ONE Championship descended on the Phu Tho Indoor Stadium for the first time ever with ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH.
The dust has settled on a spectacular night of martial arts action in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and the historic event taught us several lessons about the promotion’s world-class athletes and striking talents.
Here are three key takeaways from this incredible show.
Vietnamese Martial Artists Are Show-Stoppers
Tumblr media
Local heroes impressed in ONE Championship’s first-ever Vietnamese martial arts event.
Michael “The Beast From The East” Pham wrote the first chapter on Vietnamese domination with his win over “Ant Man” Mohamad Fakri Bin Yusoff.
Pham controlled the contest and earned a unanimous decision win to score first honors of the night for his motherland.
The ink had not yet dried on the script before crowd favorite Bi “Killer Bee” Nguyen added another Vietnamese victory to the card. Nguyen not only got the better of Puja “The Cyclone” Tomar, but she also sparked the crowd into a frenzy with her sublime strikes and energy.
Tumblr media
Unbelievably, her split decision win still could not top the incredible action that fans witnessed when Vietnamese star Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat stepped into the ring to face Malaysia’s Azwan Che Wil.
The Vietnamese hero capped off the night as he dominated Azwan throughout their contest. Duy Nhat delivered a sensational performance and displayed the most complete striking package of the evening. His unorthodox combinations kept fans thirsty for the finish.
The Malaysian was resilient, but he could not withstand the power and ferocity of the Ho Chi Minh City native’s right hand. The Vietnamese star caught him square on the jaw, which ended their contest immediately.
Along with compatriot Chris Nguyen, who had also claimed victory earlier in the night, this clean sweep by the Vietnamese athletes had undoubtedly elevated the country’s standing in Asian martial arts.
Nong-O Gaiyanghadao Is An All-Time Great
Tumblr media
Not that there were any doubts to begin with, but Nong-O Gaiyanghadao’s legacy in “the art of eight limbs” continues.
Since his arrival in ONE Super Series, the Thai legend has dominated every opponent put in front of him.
This time, Nong-O outpaced and outstruck Brice “The Truck” Delval in their five-round thriller to keep the gold around his waist.
Even against a longer, rangier, and younger foe like Delval, the Thai’s instincts and experience won out. He waited and dared “The Truck” to strike, understood his tendencies, and planned his counters accordingly.
His stroke of genius matched his incredible stamina. The icon looked every bit as fit and conditioned. In contrast, the much younger Delval appeared fatigued in the later rounds.
Delval may have been Nong-O’s toughest test to date, but the way the Thai handled this challenge has left no doubts on why he is the World Champion.
His win against Brice “The Truck” Delval at ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH marks his second successful World Title defense, and it truly does beg the question, who can stop this man?
Santino Verbeek Has The Makings Of A Muay Thai Star
Tumblr media
Santino Verbeek – the man from Hoorn, Netherlands – made his ONE Super Series debut against veteran Juan Cervantes.
The 24-year-old Dutchman showed his explosiveness and quick footwork as he pressed the Newcastle native to the ropes and controlled the early exchanges.
In this match, Verbeek also unveiled a dangerous weapon in his arsenal – his trademark thunderous right hand, which on more than one occasion stumbled the Englishman.
At one point, the Hoorn native absorbed the full brunt from one of Cervantes’ many flying knees to the face, but he merely shook it off and pressed forward.
Verbeek took hits but never gave up, and he proved that he could hold his own against a WKTA Muay Thai World Champion like Cervantes.
The Dutchman impressed everyone - including the ringside judges, who awarded him the majority decision win.
The young Dutch striker established himself as an ascending talent in ONE Super Series, and fans will likely see more of this standout kickboxer soon.
ONE Championship’s next event, ONE: CENTURY Part I and Part II, goes down at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan on 13 October.

3 Takeaways From Saemapetch’s KO Performance At ONE: FULL BLAST
Tumblr media
Saemapetch Fairtex held down his #1 spot in the bantamweight Muay Thai division by starching #3-ranked contender “Left Meteorite” Kulabdam Sor. Jor. Piek Uthai with a first-round knockout at ONE: FULL BLAST.
The Fairtex athlete dropped Kulabdam with a hook-cross to the body after baiting his compatriot in the center of the Circle.
Following the emphatic win, here are three things we learned about the Thai star at ONE: FULL BLAST.
#1 Saemapetch Has Massive Power
Up until he fought Kulabdam, Saemapetch may not have shown it inside the Circle, but he carries tremendous power in his hands.
The way he dropped "Left Meteorite" with that body shot surely sent a clear message to the rest of the division that the #1 contender is not to be taken lightly.
Should ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao rematch Saemapetch down the line, the reigning king will probably be a lot warier of his old foe's knockout potential.
#2 Saemapetch Is Tactical
Saemapetch showed poise and patience in his matchup against Kulabdam.
Rarely did he ever make a mistake. Instead, he played it safe on the outside, waiting for just the right opportunity to connect with his counters and put away the Sor. Jor. Piek Uthai standout.
Fans may not have seen that tactical side in prior matches, but they can expect more of it as Saemapetch aims to hold down his #1 spot against the four hungry bantamweights underneath him.
#3 Saemapetch Constantly Improves
Sometimes, fighters score a lucky punch, but Saemapetch’s body shot was no such thing.
Right from the opening bell, it was evident that the Thai had added new skills to his toolkit, especially given his strategy to hang back and counter instead of rushing in and making mistakes – something we saw in his World Title loss to Nong-O.
If he keeps improving, we may very well see Saemapetch as the bantamweight division’s future king – if he can get past his old tormentor.
Next up, catch all the action from the previously recorded ONE: FULL BLAST II on Friday, 11 June, on the ONE Super App.

ONE: FULL BLAST II Full Card Revealed
Tumblr media
With ONE: FULL BLAST dusted and done, ONE Championship has now turned its attention to ONE: FULL BLAST II, a previously recorded event that airs on Friday, 11 June.
In the evening’s main event, #4-ranked flyweight contender Elias “The Sniper” Mahmoudi will battle the always dangerous Mongkolpetch Petchyindee Academy under ONE Super Series Muay Thai rules.
Mahmoudi is best known for his jaw-dropping win over Muay Thai standout Lerdsila Phuket Top Team. With a 32-4 record, he’s added plenty of other names to his hit list - and he's hoping Mongkolpetch’s will be next.
For his part, Mongkolpetch is a former Lumpinee Stadium World Champion with over 100 wins on his reuse. And since competing in ONE Super Series, he’s yet to lose in three bouts.
The Thai may not have cracked the flyweight Muay Thai division's rankings just yet, but a win over Mahmoudi could catapult him into the top five, where three of his compatriots and #2-ranked flyweight Jonathan “The General” Haggerty await.
More importantly, a win for either man would put them under the radar of ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon, who has been unstoppable during his tenure in ONE Super Series.
Full Card For ONE: FULL BLAST II
Elias Mahmoudi vs. Mongkolpetch Petchyindee Academy (Muay Thai – catchweight of 62.8 kilograms)
Ben Wilhelm vs. Amarsanaa Tsogookhuu (mixed martial arts – lightweight)
Ma Jia Wen vs. Yoon Chang Min (mixed martial arts – featherweight)
Wang Wenfeng vs. Taiki Naito (kickboxing – flyweight)
Download the ONE Super App to catch all the action at ONE: FULL BLAST II on Friday, 11 June.
