This blog recommends double-checking the size charts and measurements carefully. If possible, look for stores with size customization options or clear return policies in case the lehenga doesn’t fit perfectly.
What if the lehenga I order online doesn’t look the same as the picture? A: When shopping online, rely on retailers with high-quality product photos taken from various angles. Additionally, reading customer reviews can provide insights into the quality and how the lehenga looks in person compared to the photos.
How long does it take to receive a lehenga ordered online? A: Shipping times can vary depending on the retailer and your location. Be sure to factor in shipping time when placing your order, especially if you have a specific deadline for your Sangeet or Mehendi ceremony.
What are some additional costs to consider when buying a lehenga online? A: While the focus of this blog is finding affordable options, there might be additional costs to consider, such as customs duties or alteration fees. Check the retailer’s policy on these charges before finalizing your purchase.
Where can I find even more lehenga options? A: The conclusion recommends Samyakk, a Bangalore store known for its extensive lehenga collections. They offer both online shopping and a physical store for those who prefer to see the outfits in person.

Wedding Guide
What to Wear to Indian Weddings: Your ultimate Guide to Wedding Outfits
Tumblr media
If you have received an invitation to an Indian wedding or a multi-cultural desi wedding and are wondering what to wear as a guest then you have come to the right place.
As a guest deciding an outfit need not be stressful. Keep scrolling to find out what the significance of each function in an Indian wedding is and what you can wear at each of the traditional functions.
While picking an outfit for yourself you should keep in mind certain things such as the colors that can be worn. As it's an Indian wedding you can wear bright festive colors which would go on most occasions. You can wear pastel shades in the morning and jewel, darker tones in the evening. Most colors can be worn but colors like black must be avoided as it is considered inauspicious in certain customs.
Before you start shopping for an Indian wedding you must familiarize yourself with the terminologies of different outfits.
Lehenga - This is the most popular one. A lehenga or lehenga choli is a two-piece outfit with a skirt, top, and dupatta. You can wear this to functions like the sangeet and the wedding. The skirt is usually heavy with stunning designs and embroidery made by local artisans.
Saree - We are sure you have heard of this one. A saree is a 6-9 meter-long piece of cloth that is draped around the body. It is worn with a blouse on top. Sarees look great but draping these can be a challenge. But, you also have options of semi-stitched sarees which can be worn directly without the whole process of draping. You can wear a saree for the reception for a glam look!
Punjabi suit/salwar kameez**/**anarkali - This is a three piece outfit that consists of a pant at the bottom, a long or short top over it, and a dupatta that can be worn on the shoulders or over the head. This is a comfortable option if you don’t want to go overboard.
Traditional Indian weddings can be broken down into different categories based on the regions where the bride and/or groom are from. While you may wear a Punjabi suit to a Punjabi wedding, you can wear a saree to a south Indian wedding and a lehenga to a Gujrati wedding.
You should look out for the dress code which is usually mentioned on the wedding card or e-invite and you can pick your outfits accordingly. While it's not compulsory to dress up in traditional Indian outfits, it's a good immersive experience if you do so. You can always wear cocktail gowns or pantsuits for some of the functions as you would in a white wedding if heavy Indian outfits are not your style.
Non-Indian guests are always encouraged to take part in Indian culture and traditions. Indians love to see guests take part in the functions and dress up in traditional Indian outfits. Older women would be happy to fix your saree, drape it or fix your blouse so make sure you enjoy the process. Make sure you are comfortable while you enjoy the food and the dance in your traditional Indian attire.

Filmi prompts from old and our favourite bollywood songs that can be used for your desi romantic stories or as a cute little idea for your fake scenarios. Kya malum sochte sochte kab manifest hojaye?
1. Neele Neele Ambar Par (Kalaakaar)
-- This summer vacation you are at your nani ghar. The nights provide respite from the scorching heat so you run off to the terrace every night to sit and gaze at the moon until one fine evening, you see a boy opposite to your house wistfully gaze at the moon and scribble something on his notebook. His wavy hair falls gracefully on his eyes, and you can feel your heart melt. It's full moon, and she is right on the top of the terrace, letting her moonbeams fall on this handsome quiet writer. Perhaps, he realized someone's gaze over him. He looks up, and you swear to God that you have never seen such a beautiful boy ever. The boy blushes and continues writing while stealing glances at you.
2. Mitwa (Chandni)
-- It's the last day you both will ever meet in the school premises. Yes, it's farewell today. You are dressed in a yellow chiffon saree. For the first time, your school decided to make the boys wear kurtas instead of the usual suits, and the sight was too pretty for your eyes. Your boyfriend wore the typical black kurta with cuffed sleeves that made your heart go dhak dhak. Loads of fun filled dancing, canteen ka khana, principal ke speech ke baad arrived the time to say goodbyes. School had kept the farewell after board exams so this was literally the last time you all gathered together. After hugging your friends, you go to the school main gate and find him leaning against the adjacent wall.
Hand in hand, both of you walk outside the school. 'Everything is going to change, isn't it?" You ask. He takes a bite of his ice cream, and answers, "Yes. No more school classes, no more sneaking out and we might have a long distance going on, but some things will stay permanent."
"Aur voh kya?"
"Tere mere honthon pe mithe mithe geet mitwa.."
3. Bole Chudiyan (K3G)
-- You are the bride's sister, and that boy is your acadmeic rival at school. However, for now, he is also your jija's dear brother. Today is Sangeet, and you were determined to outperform ladke vale. Both of you were good at academics, but also at dancing. This was a test and a chance to rub defeat on his face.
That was your actual plan until two days ago, your didi jiju decided to have a group combined performance where you and your rival would be the lead dancers to unite both the enemies (you and him). Needles to say, you were mad. There was no way you would dance with his smooth moves and charismatic style. He was mad too. He would never dance with your graceful bollywood moves straight from 90s Saroj Khan choreohgraphy.
Keeping aside snide remarks and your school rivalry, both of you managed to choreograph and coordinate everyone dashed with a little tension that did not go unnoticed by didi jija and cousins. Dressed in a baby pink lehenga, you see him arrive on the stage in a golden white sherwani. He sends a two finger salute to your direction while you roll your eyes.
'Aake meri duniya mein vapas aajana' you pull him gently as per the choreography. He stumbles towards you, not aware of his scarf clinging on to your bracelet. 'Sehra baandh ke mahi tu mere ghar aana...' He twirls you halfway and you notice that his scarf is stuck on your bracelet.
You hate how his stupid handsome smirk is making butterflies fly in your body. After the semi twirl, he turns you over in front, his arm around your bare waist causing you to gasp silently. God knows what came over him. He lightly pecks your cheek in front of everyone and discreetly removes his stuck scarf.
'Oye soni kitti soni aaj tu lagdi ve bas mere sath yeh jodi teri sajdi ve' Didi and jija come in and dance to their assigned part. You run away from him quickly to calm your racing heart.
He is looking at you, a grin gracefully sitting over his pretty lips. You bashfully look up. 'Haan main ho gaya tera sajna.' It's the time for all the boys to come together on the stage. Your rival shoots a smooth wink before going to dance.
4. Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga (1942: A love story)
You accidentally fell from your cycle by speeding over the speed breaker. Obviously you won't cry. You are fifteen now. A girl quickly arrives towards you, and in a soft voice asks, "Hey, you okay? That was a terrible fall. Dhyan kidhar tha?" Wincing, you look up, and see a pretty girl with silver jhumke and white salwar blowing at your wound. She is wearing a multi coloured bandhani dupatta. In two seconds, you forget the blood oozing out of your knee. The only red your eyes are focused on are on the pretty red shade of the girl's lips.
She is about to tear her dupatta to tie it across your wound. Your hand immediately holds her wrist, and you feel electricity jolt in your fingers. "Itna sundar dupatta kharab mat karo. Ghar idhar paas hai. Just help me to reach my gate, please."
Shaking her head, she tears her dupatta while you let out a gasp. "You are bleeding too much, besides I can always buy a new dupatta." She finally looks up at you and smiles. That's when you get a clear picture of her face.
Doe eyes lightly lined with kajal, a small bindi right between her eyebrows, and a small stone nath on her nose. She looks heavenly! You think how in front of such a beautiful girl, you look dust laden after falling off your bicycle.
"Aise mat dekho... tumhe pyaar ho jayega."
*:..。o○ ○o。..:**:..。o○ ○o。..:**:..。o○ ○o。..:*
Okay so the last one was inspired from @morally-gayy series.
There are going to be more. I can make them shorter though if you would want that.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
just letting y’all know: female reader, the reader is indian. don’t wanna put all those details cause i’m lazy af so let’s just get straight to it.
• he immediately found you so attractive. he was like “wow this girl has a different vibe and i like it”
• he took a while to ask you out but y’all became friends so easily. he got to know about the guys you dated in the past which is why he didn’t ask you out immediately
• but when you guys started dating omg it was- i can’t exactly put the words together but i’ll explain.
• he went for all events that you had to attend. weddings, mehndi’s, sangeets, engagement parties, you name it, he showed up with you.
• your parents adored him‼️ sure they were a little disappointed he wasn’t indian but they loved the fact he treated you so well.
• he’s not fully familiar with your culture yet so when he saw you looking absolutely stunning and wearing a crazy but beautiful lehenga, he was worried that you were overdressed.
• you had to remind him that this was a desi event, this is in fact still not enough to overdress. and no matter how much you try, you can’t outshine the bride.
• and yes, while attending these functions he wore a kurta. and lemme tell you how hot he looked. wow. you were drooling girl.
• but that didn’t stop him from going all over you. you were the most beautiful person in his eyes.
• the one thing you dreaded in these events are the aunties who you’ve never seen in your life and they criticise you on every damn thing
• eren could see that you were uncomfortable and he was gonna say something but you stopped him and did it yourself. you put those ladies in their place and walked away
• he was so proud of you and hugged you so tightly.

• bollywood movie marathons. no questions asked. you will make him watch the most iconic bollywood movies.
• jab we met, dilwale dulhania le jayenge, khabi khushi khabi gham, basically all the old movies with shah rukh khan cause everyone loves him
• you got eren to start loving him by watching all these movies.

Hi Ambrose <333 can you talk to me about some Marathi wedding traditions? (Its for very important prongsfoot research 🙏🙏 thank youu)
Ooh yay Marathi weddings! I love them! Let's get started right away!
First things first: Indian weddings are almost festivals in their own right. There is a lot going on during wedding season, and it all condenses down into a very chaotic week that makes you feel like you're stuck in a whirlwind you never want to get out of.
I'm going to go off of my experiences with Big Fat Indian Weddings (which: I've seen many of those, each and every wedding I've been to has had around 2500 guests), so buckle up.
There are many rituals and events in an Indian wedding, and you can pick and choose which events you want, or you can have all of them, it's entirety up to you. There used to be regional traditions to weddings before, but now they are blending together, for example: Sangeet is a typically Punjabi affair when it comes to weddings, but every Maharashtrian celebration I've been to has held a Sangeet.
I'm going to give a sort of overview of all the things that take place and in which order, so here goes:
The Lagnaach Bedior: before any festivities begin, the horoscopes (Patrika) of the bride and groom are matched before any events. The family of the bride and groom get together and call on a family priest who checks their Patrika and details them out, offering advice for any difficulties that they may face in married life.
Then comes the Muhurta Medha; where the families of the bride and groom to be plant a tree as an auspicious beginning.
The wedding season starts with— you guessed it— an engagement ceremony. In Marathi, it is called Sakhar Puda (Sakhar– sugar, puda– packet) or Vangnishchay (verbal agreement). The bride is gifted with packets of sugar, clothing and jewellery, and the groom is given coconut, gold/silver coins, and clothes as well. The sugar signifies a sweet beginning of the marriage. Engagement rings, while not traditionally a Hindu thing, are also exchanged by the bride and groom to be.
Sometimes, a family may choose to have a pre- Sakhar Puda mehendi ceremony, it's not very common. A mehendi ceremony is when women who are invited to the wedding (hint: a lot of women) get together for a day to get their hands stained with mehendi. The bride is the star of the show, and her mehendi usually goes up to her biceps, and even her feet are stained. This is in general a very relaxed setting, with lots of cushions to lounge on and lots of food and refreshments (as is typical of any Indian get together lol food is important). A mehendi is always held before the main ceremony of marriage vows, though.
After the Vangnishchay comes the Muhurta— the priest is called once again, and this time a specific time is fixed for the beginning of the ceremony of vows. And then, the preparations begin in earnest, months before the wedding day.
Five Savashani (a married woman; the Hindi word is Suhasini) are invited by the bride’s mother on an auspicious day. They make turmeric powder and Sandege (pulses and spice powder) in mortar and pestle to be used later in the wedding, and Papad is rolled for eating. The women then hold a Rukhwat by decorating artistically and exhibiting bridal lehengas and sarees, jewellery, kitchen utensils, sweets and all sorts of bridal trousseau as a part of the wedding rituals of Maharashtra.
Next: the Sangeet! Sangeet is held anywhere between two days to a week before the ceremony of vows. There is food, lots of music and dancing to both traditional wedding songs and Bollywood songs, and it's generally a time for people to come together and have as much fun as possible. They're possibly my favourite part of weddings. (They're also not traditionally Maharashtrian, they're Punjabi, but lots of families still do it.)
Sometimes, the pre wedding mehendi is done right alongside the Sangeet, and other times it is done a either the day after Sangeet or after Kelvan (explained below). Again, lots of women come together and draw mehendi designs on their hands. Bridal mehendi goes all the way up to the biceps, and the feet are also decorated. It's very fun.
After the Sangeet comes the Kelvan, where the parents of the bride and groom to be invite each other's family for a meal. Gifts are given and aarti-puja for the Kuldevta (family deities) is performed, and in general it is a very simple yet beautiful affair. This is typically done two or three days before the wedding. The Kelvan ceremony invite also includes close family and relatives from both sides. The idea behind the ritual is to show respect and know each other better.
The day before— or sometimes the morning of, depending on the auspicious time— the ceremony of wedding vows, a Halad Chadawat is held. The bride and groom's respective families rub turmeric powder and water into their skin with the help of freshly picked mango leaves. It's a playful event, with lots of laughter and pranks. Halad (turmeric) is used for cleansing and purifying one's body before entering into a holy matrimony. It symbolizes the happy start of a new life together, and is said to protect the couple from any bad omens that may harm them before the wedding.
Now comes the actual wedding. This one's a doozy muahaha!
The day begins with a Puja of the Lord Ganpati, who is always honoured and worshipped at the beginning of any venture (there is a myth behind this, if you want to know). After the Ganpatidev Puja, the Kuldevta is also invoked to bless the couple.
The groom enters the venue of the wedding with a procession on the back of a horse, sometimes with a sword and scabbard strapped to his waist. The Seemant Puja is performed. The bride's mother washes the groom's feet and gifts are given to the groom's family by the bride's family.
The bride, wearing either a red or a yellow wedding Shalu (a type of saree) and with a Mundavalya (a string of pearls or flowers) tied across her forehead, performs the Gaurihar Puja with her parents. Rice is placed on the idol’s head as mantras and shlokas are recited. Prayers to the Goddess Parvati for a happy and prosperous married life are said.
The Antarpat ritual is the main one. A silk shawl is hung between the bride and groom while the Brahmin chants the mantras.
After the Antarpat comes the Sankalp, where the silk shawl is removed after the mantras are finished. The guests showers the newly married couple with Akshata (unbroken rice grains) to bless them with a happy marriage.
The Kanyadaan follows: here, the father of the bride gives her hand to the groom, who ties a mangalsutra around her neck and applies sindoor (red powder) to her forehead. The bride presses chandan (sandalwood) to the groom's forehead in return.
For the Saptapadi, the couple takes seven rounds around the holy fire. The bride is required to touch seven betel nuts placed on top of small mounds of rice with her right foot. Once the seven rounds are done, she places her foot on a grindstone, while the groom holds her hand or foot, symbolizing that she needs to be strong and he will always support her.
The bride’s father along with the couple pray to god for blessings in the Karmasamaapti (meaning "end of the act")
A grand feast fit for royalty follows the wedding ceremony, and there is again a lot of dancing and music. A separate Reception is also held, which is just another party so that the bride and groom— who had been busy with the wedding itself— can mingle with everyone who had attended.
.

Hiii! i freaking love you and all your work! i wanted to know when you’ll be posting the next part of blue moon (that is if you still are) and also do you think y/n and mason will be having a joint desi and english wedding and all of the rituals? and future kids😭
thank you lovely!! 🫶🏽
i think i might just finish blue moon where it is, i’m not sure i want to carry it on anymore 😔 i might make an epilogue at some point tho!!
omg yes y/n and mason will for sure we having a desi wedding and an english wedding! y/n grew up in england so she wants to have a white wedding as well as a traditional indian wedding
it’d start with the ceremony at a stately country manor house, y/n in a beautiful white figure-hugging gown with a train and mason in a black tux crying at the altar when she walks down the aisle to an instrumental of a love song that y/n wrote for him. they’ll both cry during their vows even though mason’s is full of stupid jokes, and then he’ll kiss her softly when the ceremony ends. then they’ll have the reception in a ballroom with florals and veuve clicquot and a string quartet. they’ll both have an outfit change ofc with their extra selves 😭 their first dance would be to an instrumental version of a bollywood song like maula mere maula 🥹 their loved ones will do speeches and toasts and it’ll be a classy night until everyone gets drunk on cocktails and they finally stumble into their rooms at like 3am
then the week after that will be all the events of an indian wedding but rather than the bride and groom being split, their families do all the events together (bc obviously mason’s white family don’t know what they’re doing 😭). they’ll have a maiyan with rangoli in the chelsea badge, and it’ll end with mason and y/n throwing the haldi paste at each other 💀 they’ll have a ladies sangeet with everyone getting their mehndi done(the boys will all ask for the chels lion or something stupid like that 💀), and mason’s gonna spend forever looking for his initials and his number 19 in y/n’s mehndi. he’s gonna be annoying and try to get involved in the boliyan that y/n’s aunties and grandmothers are singing, but he’ll be demoted to doing the tambourine. the jago night will be dance battle after dance battle, and mason’s stupid ass gets lectured by y/n’s bibi for nearly dropping the jago 😭
mason’s gonna facetime y/n on the wedding morning for her to check that his turban is on properly but steph and isla will answer instead so he can’t see her getting ready. y/n will be at the gurdwara early and she’ll watch the milni through a window, nearly crying at her and mason’s families greeting each other. when y/n walks into the hall in her red bridal lehenga, everyone will be gasping and mason can’t help but look even though he’s not supposed to, making him cry at the sight of her again. y/n sits beside him and he’ll crack some stupid joke before the ceremony starts, the two of them giggling like idiots. they’ll do the ceremony, mason so nervous about making sure he gets everything right, walking slowly for the four laavan so y/n doesn’t trip over behind him. when the fourth laav is done, they’ll both be smiling like idiots bc they’re officially married in both cultures. they won’t be able to help themselves from holding hands during all the hymns and when everyone finally leaves the hall at the end of the ceremony, they’ll get to share a cute little kiss.
y/n and the bride’s side will go back to her parents house, and when mason and his side arrive at the house, y/n’s sister and all the girls will be at the door, making him do stupid challenges and getting him to pay them a grand each so he can take their sister. y/n will cry as she says bye to her family, leaving the house as a married woman, and mason will have tissues for her in his pocket but he’ll also be trying not to laugh at her 😭
y/n and mason will get ready for the reception at his house, both of them in navy blue for the party, and they’ll do a big extra entrance into the hall with flashing lights and dhol players. they’ll cut the wedding cake, mason feeding y/n a piece and y/n smushing a piece into mason’s cheek instead. they’ll have another first dance, this time to an instrumental of Die For You, and then it’ll go straight into everyone joining them on the dance floor bc the dj’s playing classic wedding bhangra. they’ll both dance until their feet hurt and everyone will get super drunk with the free bar, and the whole thing will just be perfect 🥹

Beautiful Wedding Hairstyles to Stun Your Look!
Introduction
Planning a wedding celebration involves a lot of work. Several jobs must be finished to have the ideal final day, from the event flow to the venue, from the decorations to the fashion. No matter how carefully you plan, it's simple to forget to include small details. Even if all of the brides keep their gowns and jewels in check, cosmetics often make the list but hairstyles frequently don't. Surprisingly, good Bridal Hair and Makeup are just as crucial to a bride's wedding look as makeup. There are many different bridal hairstyles to pick from to complement your wedding attire and cosmetics, depending on the type of bridal look you have in mind for your big day.
Here are Special Hair Styles for your Special Day
1. Super Gorgeous White Flower Bun
When it comes to taming it down and enhancing your appearance, this white flower bun comes into play. You can have a splash of color in your wedding décor or even your wedding attire. Wear your bridal lehenga or saree on a special day with this bridal bun decorated with a bouquet of white flowers. If you want an extravagant hairdo to match your wedding attire, this bridal hairstyle with matha Patti looks amazing. It is always in season.
2. Open Hair Bridal Look- Way to Elegance
When it comes to hairstyles, not everyone can pull off a neat bun or a bouquet. So, one of the season's most exquisite trends, the open-hair look, is here for brides who prefer to keep it simple on their heads. This wonderful Indian bridal hairstyle is perfect for you if you prefer to keep your hair as natural-looking as possible and don't like to use many heavy hair ornaments. You can get by with straight hair and a tiny maang tikka.
3. Simple Braid with the Traditional Naga Jadai
It is okay to show off your accessories on your wedding day. So, take a look at this bridal hairdo if you want a cool hair accessory to be the day's focal point. It's time to put an end to your search with this straightforward matha Patti bridal hairstyle. Love how this stunning bride adorned a basic braid with naga jadai for her wedding day.
4. Braided Updo with a Touch of Flowers
On their wedding day, brides desire to appear sophisticated, so why not select a hairdo that expresses that? This delicate braided updo is a classy hairstyle for Indian brides and goes well with a reception gown or designer saree. To create a wedding outfit, accessorize with complementary florals!
5. Rose Bun with a Messy Fishtail Braid
For your mehndi or sangeet, try this lovely wedding hairdo with a sloppy fishtail braid and a rose bun. You may take it a step further by embellishing the braid with baby-breath flowers to give it a more elegant appearance. If you want to wear a saree to your wedding, it might also be a fantastic hairstyle.
6. Bridal Hairstyle with Multicolor Flowers
For an outdoor day wedding, this elegant haircut is perfect to pair with a pastel-colored lehenga or saree. The simple bun seems much too lovely to pass up, especially with the multicolored roses and baby breath! Therefore, why choose only one hue when you can have the most attractive appearance for your special day?
7. Side Fringe Bridal Hairstyle
If you enjoy Indian wedding hairstyles, this one features a chic bun adorned with lovely jasmine blossoms and a voluminous side fringe that has been blow-dried. The lesson from this one is that it complements Indian bridal attire beautifully.

Should we follow all our Indian Wedding traditions?
We no longer see many arranged marriages. Instead, most of us find love at school, at a party, on dating apps, in Ubers, etc. Today, we are finding love on our own terms. That’s why weddings today are incredibly joyous occasions - a moment to celebrate the love between two people and the union of two families.
When it’s time to get married, we want that celebration to be a display of our personalities (as bride and groom) and affection. We plan our wedding for nearly a year - to include fun coordinated dances at the Sangeet, beautiful outfits, open bars for our friends; and we hope everyone breaks it down on the dance floor at the Reception. Amidst all of this though, many couples go through their actual wedding ceremony and have no idea what is happening nor understand what each custom represents. Why do we do this?
Last year, prior to getting married, I spent a lot of time researching each part of the Wedding ceremony. I wanted to learn more about the seven steps around the agni (fire) and the meaning behind the Mangalsutra before getting on the mandap in front of hundreds of people and committing my vows. However, as I continued to research, I learned about the Vidaai ceremony, which happens at the end of the wedding ceremony; and I felt that my personal beliefs did not align with this custom. That’s why I decided to remove it from our ceremony.
In English, Vidaai means “Goodbye,” and it’s a ceremony is all about bittersweet farewells. Traditionally, the Vidaai represents the final stage of a wedding, where the bride’s parents say goodbye to their daughter, and they are officially “separated.” The ceremony is a mix of overwhelming emotions. There is usually dramatic background music playing and everyone is weeping.
The bride’s parents and family accompany her out of the wedding. Before the bride leaves them, she may throw rice behind her as to symbolize a repayment to her parents for all that they have given her throughout the years. The father of the bride then hands her off to her new husband, which almost feels like a “changing of the guards.” Then, the couple gets ready to drive away in their car (usually a very extravagant car these days).
Brothers and cousins of the bride sometimes help push the car to represent their acceptance of the new husband and their marriage. However, often times, female friends and family of the bride stand in front of the car, preventing the couple from leaving until they are paid off to accept the new husband. The groomsmen and male relatives eventually remove the girls in order to help the groom take his bride away.
Okay, so where did this tradition originate from? I learned that, historically in India, brides were given away to kings and princes as a gift or property. In true “Game of Thrones” fashion, if a kingdom had to surrender or if a treaty had to be made between two kingdoms, a girl was given away as compensation. Over time, these arranged marriages evolved and became based on astrology, caste associations, etc. A bride would often meet their groom and his family for the first time on their wedding day. The Vidaai was actually an emotional moment because the bride was joining a family she barely knew, and her parents may potentially never see her again.
Let’s fast forward to today. We are knowingly and happily marrying our husband, and we do not feel like we are being given away. Instead, we proudly feel like we are bringing two families together. In a time where our American culture reinforces gender equality and female strength, why do we still partake in this antiquated Indian tradition? What is the right balance of displaying ourselves as bride and groom, but also abiding to generations of family traditions?
Are we supposed to follow traditions because they existed for so many years? Or do we make a conscious decision to mold and modernize these traditions for our generations to come? As I get older and learn more about my family, I’m truly unsure of the right answer.
