The #John_T_Brush_Stairway on #Coogans_Bluff, #Manhattan. Built by the #New_York_Giants (baseball variety) in order to give fans from #Washington_Heights better access to and from the #Polo_Grounds (Brush had owned the Giants for a while); rebuilt with the help of the #San_Francisco_Giants, whose current ownership is very much aware of the team's heritage. It's too bad the New York's current National League team (who I've been rooting for since 1962) aren't as aware of their heritage. #newyorkcityparks

https://sportsmascots.fandom.com/wiki/Lou_Seal_(San_Francisco_Giants)
Lou Seal is the official mascot of the San Francisco Giants. "Born" on July 25, 1996, Luigi Francisco Seal has been a regular part of the Giants baseball home games and events around San Francisco, and the United States. The name is a play on the name "Lucille." The Giants held a contest in which fans submitted name ideas. Six people submitted the name "Lou Seal" and they were all invited to a game that season to watch from a luxury box. All of them got to meet the newly named Lou Seal and one of these lucky fans was randomly chosen to throw out the first pitch at that game. The name also refers to the San Francisco Seals, the baseball club that was a mainstay of the Pacific Coast League from 1903 until 1957. Although the mascot's name is a bit ambiguous, Lou Seal is indeed "officially" male (and the person inside the costume is a man). In 2008, Forbes named Lou Seal the best mascot in sports.
The character has had 1,150 consecutive home-game appearances, and is one of the four subjects followed in the second season of the Hulu series Behind the Mask.
He even has PARENTS! (Pictured above in the second row)
The Interview
Full Name: Luigi Francisco Seal
Position: Left Out (Team Mascot) Born: July 25, 1996 Bats: Right flipper Throws: Right flipper Height: Taller than the average seal Weight: He could use a diet Hair: Battleship grey
CAREER Like a fish out of water, Lou's flip-flopping mystique and crazy sense of humor contribute high-powered enthusiasm to Felipe's roster. Known for his "Let's see what I can get away with next" philosophy, Lou has accomplished many daring feats ... 25 attempts of unsuccessfully kicking the umpire in the seat of his pants ... actually stole home plate five times ... 19 headstands behind home plate ... placed 2.5 banana peels in the path of the opposing team ... Five-time champion of "Act Crazy Behind The Fox Newscaster Without Getting Caught!" ... has given 2,562 nuggies, polished 843 bald heads, directed more than 12 major name pregame music bands ... won the 1998 Easter Seal Mascot Baseball Game as a member of S.J. Sharkie's Heroes ... caught 13 "fowl" balls with his mouth.
GIANT IN THE COMMUNITY Participates in visiting hospitals, youth organization and civic groups throughout Northern California and San Francisco.
PERSONAL Graduated from Pier 39 Flipper Academy, majoring in Beach Ball Balancing and Shark Avoidance ... started own crab-leg restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf, where he invented Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl ... won the San Francisco Tuna Eating Contest flippers-down from 1997-98 ... once grew his whiskers so long, he was mistaken for an octopus ... someday aspires to be a special guest on "Baywatch."
HOW OBTAINED Spotted by Dusty Baker at Pier 39. Turned down offers from other teams to sign with the Giants.
INTERESTS Enjoys going to the movies, eating dinner (lots of it), dancing (all the time), swimming, playing baseball and many other sports, and likes to watch ESPN when at home.
Q: Hey, Lou Seal. Everyone has been wondering where you are from. LOU SEAL: I was born on the Farallon Islands just west of the Golden Gate Bridge and I grew up right here in San Francisco. Currently I live under the Lefty O'Doul Bridge in the China Basin district of San Francisco. I love this spot since I'm swimming distance from the team's home, Oracle Park. Being so close gives me more time to do what I do best - root for the greatest team of all time: the Giants!
Q: Do you come from a large family? LOU SEAL: Yeah, I come from a very large family. Us seals mature pretty quickly so I have a lot of relatives that I've never met -- until I became the Giants' team mascot! Now I have uncles, aunts, cousins and nephews coming out of the woodwork asking me for tickets and stuff.
Q: Are your parents proud of you? LOU SEAL: My parents are extremely proud of me! I am the first one in my family to earn a paycheck that isn't paid in smelt or other small fish. My family is so happy the new ballpark has opened up. Now they can watch me perform from the Bay.
The ballpark is pretty high-tech. I have suggested to the Giants to put some underwater television monitors below the waterfront so my folks can watch me on television.
Q: Sounds like you have quite a sweet tooth! LOU SEAL: Yes I do! Yet I always make sure I brush my teeth three times a day. My whiskers make great dental floss!
Q: How did you become such a huge Giants fan? LOU SEAL: I'm a San Francisco native and the Giants are in my blood! My dad was a big-time Giants fan and so was my grandpa! How can anyone not be a Giants fan!?! We've had so many great players over the last 40 years like Mays, McCovey, Marichal and Bonds -- you just gotta love the Giants!
I love cheering with the fans and helping to keep our team morale up and positive!
Q: Sounds like your family has quite a baseball history. LOU SEAL: Oh yeah! Because of my great-grandfather, the original San Francisco minor league baseball team was named the San Francisco Seals. As Grandpa told it, the original owner was walking along Pier 23 trying to think of a name for his team. A burst of wind came and blew his cap off his head and into the Bay. My great-grandfather retrieved it with his nose and gave it back to the man. From that moment on, they were called the San Francisco Seals!
At least that's what my grandpa tells me. It may be just a marine legend.
Q: So you must love your job. LOU SEAL: It is a dream job! I love cheering with the fans and helping to keep our team up and positive! It is no small coincidence that we have done so well since my first year on the job. It was not just Brian Sabean who helped turn this team around, the Big Lou had something to do with it too, you know.
Q: Besides going to baseball games, what else do you enjoy doing? LOU SEAL: I love making public appearances. It is great getting out and meeting Giants fans. I enjoy going to community and charity events, schools, birthday parties. I especially love attending corporate get-togethers.
I've done some appearances at some of the Dugout stores. It was great fun. When I'm not at a game or making an appearance, you might find me relaxing at Pier 39, chasing mermaids or fishin' for mackerel.
Q: What is your advice to kids on how they should enjoy a Giants game? LOU SEAL: They should wear a Giants cap, bring their glove to the game and root, root, root for the Giants! And don't be afraid to join Lou in the conga line!

LOS ANGELES — For all the talk about Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers becoming the most grotesque example of baseball's excess and a a cynical twisting of contract deferrals, it was still pretty clear Thursday that both sides are still wanting. The Dodgers introduced their newest and brightest star at Chavez Ravine, then watched him make some interesting admissions as he addressed the media for the first time since his season ended via scalpel to his elbow. The first — and let's be real, the more urgent — was that the dog that so many baseball fans fell in love with during his MVP acceptance speech is named Decoy, or Dekopin in Japanese. The second — and maybe something the Dodgers would have rather not be disclosed — is that his new team understands a decade with nine division titles, three NL pennants, a World Series title and a consistently sold-out stadium is seen as a failure, by both their fans and critics.Because the Dodgers, with a financial firehose and one of the most grey matter-filled front offices in sports, are supposed to win more than just one World Series, even moreso now with Ohtani aboard. And after six years of below-.500 ball with the the Angels, that kind of outlook is exactly what appealed to Ohtani is his second go-around in MLB free agency:"One thing that really stands out in my head is, when I had the meeting with the Dodgers’ ownership group, they said when they look back at the last 10 years, even though they've made the playoffs every single year, won a World Series ring, it's considered a failure," Ohtani said. "And when I heard that, I knew that they were all about winning, and that's exactly how I feel."If there was a keyword used by Ohtani and the Dodgers brass on Thursday, it might have been "alignment."Ohtani was drawn to the Dodgers because they have basically been a photo negative of the Angels on the field during his career, consistently winning with a rotating trove of All-Stars. The Dodgers were drawn to Ohtani because they have been in on him since he was a high-schooler, and can now get him in after a second unanimous MVP season.Everything that has come out about Ohtani's contract has held up the idea that Ohtani wants exactly what the Dodgers have been since he reached the U.S., most notably the reported clause that he can terminate the deal if the team's principal owner, Mark Walter, or its president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, ever leave their posts."Everybody has to be on the same page in order to have a winning organization," Ohtani said. "I feel like those two are at the top of it, and they're in control of everything, and I feel almost like I'm having a contract with those two guys. And I feel like, if one of them are gone, and [we’ll] not be on the same page, I feel like things might get a little out of control. So I just wanted a safety net."Friedman called that clause "flattering" in a scrum after Ohtani's Q&A, and joked people would think he put it in the contract himself. He also reiterated that he isn't going anywhere, calling his unusual new position a "non-factor."He also addressed the deferrals that have enraged certain fans this week, in which Ohtani won't see $680 million of his money (97%) until after his contract is over. Ohtani was reported to have brought the idea to the table with other teams (the San Francisco Giants were one such candidate), and Friedman confirmed that was the case."I wouldn't have had the guts to propose it and it's what's funny about 'Oh the Dodgers!'" Friedman said. "I wouldn't have had the guts to have done that. But as [Ohtani's agent Nez Balelo] walked through it and laid it out as we were talking, it was incredibly consistent with everything he had said throughout the process. Sometimes you experience that, but they don't sync up and match."Shohei Ohtani has a very good dog, and a lot of work to do with the Dodgers. (Photo by Rob Leiter/MLB Photos via Getty Images)The final proposal came in Friday morning, per Friedman, hours before pure chaos erupted. Even as Ohtani was rumored to be headed to the Toronto Blue Jays and reporters tried to figure out if he was on a Canada-bound plane, Friedman said the Dodgers knew they weren't out of it.Balelo had apparently said throughout the process that Ohtani knew he wanted to make the announcement himself on Instagram, which he did. As long as no Blue Jays logo appeared on Ohtani's feed, the Dodgers front office knew they were still in it.Now, Ohtani's major obstacle is getting healthy again. He said he had begun taking dry swings last week and expected to be ready for Opening Day, but pitching remains out until 2025. As for Friedman, they still have work to do."It was important to Shohei that this wasn't the one group we were going to make," Friedman said. "I think anyone who's watched us operate over the years, we're trying to add really good players at every turn. One hour later, the Dodgers reached a deal on a trade for Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow, with even more moves — such as signing Ohtani's Team Japan teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto — likely on the way.

Shoehi Ohtani’s $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and its unprecedented deferrals, shocked the world, but probably not the San Francisco Giants. One day after the Dodgers officially announced the biggest deal in sports history by total value, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi told reporters that Ohtani’s camp had presented the exact same deal to San Francisco, and the Giants were agreeable to it.Ohtani opted for the Dodgers instead.Farhan Zaidi on Shohei Ohtani: Proposal from Ohtani to Giants was exact deal he wound up getting with LA. "We said we were agreeable to it.... It was going to come down to a choice by the player at that point."— John Shea (@JohnSheaHey) December 13, 2023Zaidi on commitment from Giants ownership on Ohtani: "Every financial target or request that was made was met and was met pretty quickly." Preference for SoCal won out, Zaidi contends.— Andrew Baggarly (@extrabaggs) December 13, 2023Ohtani’s $680 million in deferrals were reported to come from Ohtani himself, with the idea that the delayed money (at no additional interest) would aid the Dodgers in building an elite team around him by reducing the CBT hit and the real-life value of the contract. The deferrals lower the present-day value of the deal to about $460 million.Zaidi’s admission shows the plum deal wasn’t just a Dodgers special. Ohtani knew what he wanted, and the Dodgers were simply his favorite among the teams that said “yes.” It’s not hard to understand why, as the team has been a consistent winner for the past decade and is located in very familiar territory.Still, this figures to make one of MLB's premier rivalries even more compelling over the next few years, especially with the Giants striking a six-year, $113 million deal Tuesday for Korean free agent Jung Hoo Lee.As for which other teams were amenable to the Ohtani deal, that remains unclear. How much did the Blue Jays offer Shohei Ohtani? The Blue Jays were widely seen as the runners-up for Ohtani thanks to the wild 24 hours that preceded the player's announcement he would sign with the Dodgers. The exact numbers the Jays presented — and whether or not they accepted the heavily deferred $700 million proposal — remains unclear. Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reported Sunday that Toronto was "right there" with an offer described as very competitive.Nicholson-Smith went on to speculate the final big to have been well above $600 million, though all sides apparently declined comment when asked.Shohei Ohtani had a contract in mind while picking teams, and he got it from the Dodgers. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)Beyond the Dodgers, Giants and Blue Jays, it's pretty unclear how deep teams got with Ohtani. The New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs lingered for a while but all seemed to bow out in the week before Ohtani made his choice. The New York Mets had maybe the funniest reaction, with team owner Steve Cohen complaining that Ohtani's agent never reached out to him personally. Because we all know if you want something, you should wait and see if it comes to you.

South Korea's Jung Hoo Lee has reportedly signed with the San Francisco Giants. (AP Photo/Matt Slocum)The San Francisco Giants and outfielder Jung Hoo Lee reportedly agreed to a six-year, $113 million contract on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. As part of the deal, the South Korean outfielder has the option to terminate his contract and become a free agent after four years. He'd take away $72 million in that case.In 86 games in the KBO last season, Lee hit .318 with 48 RBI and six home runs. A broken ankle on July 22 cut his season short. He was named rookie of the year in 2017 and won the league MVP award in 2022 after hitting 113 RBI and 23 home runs and batting .349 in 142 contests.Signing Lee was a massive win for a Giants organization that missed out on stars Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa the past two offseasons.(Amber Matsumoto/Yahoo Sports)On Dec. 4, Lee was posted by the Kiwoom Heroes of the KBO. Should the 25-year-old stay for the duration of his MLB contract, the Giants would owe the Heroes an almost $19 million posting fee — $18,825,000, to be exact. If Lee opts out, however, that amount would be reduced to $12,675,000, though San Francisco would have to tack on an additional 15% of earned bonuses or escalators.Lee is the son of 1994 KBO MVP Jong Beom Lee, who played for the Haitai Tigers in the KBO and the Chunichi Dragons in Japan's NPB. He was nicknamed "Son of the Wind," which in turn led to the younger Lee's nickname, "Grandson of the Wind."This article contains affilate links; if you click such a link and make a purchase, we may earn a commission.
