Week in tech (August 3 to August 9, 2020): Microsoft-TikTok deal, Galaxy Note 20 debut, WeChat ban, and more
Written by Anuj Bhatia | New Delhi | Updated: August 9, 2020 5:39:56 pm
From Trump’s executive orders to ban TikTok and WeChat to the launch of Galaxy Note 20, here’s the tech news roundup of the week. (Image credit: Bloomberg)
The world of technology saw a lot of developments throughout the week. Donald Trump has had a busy week, as he issued two executive orders against China-based TikTok and WeChat, prohibiting Americans from doing any business with the apps’ Chinese owners, citing national security concerns. Microsoft too made headlines this week when it confirmed that it was looking to acquire TikTok’s US operations before September 15, the date when President Trump said he would ban the video-sharing app in the US. Elsewhere, we saw the launch of the Galaxy Note 20 series, Google Pixel 4a and refreshed 27-inch iMac. This week we also heard the news of Apple’s long-serving executive Phil Schiller stepping down from his role of chief marketing officer.
Here’s a comprehensive recap of the best tech stories from the past week.
Trump signs executive orders against TikTok and WeChat
President Donald Trump signed two executive orders that would ban TikTok and WeChat from operating in the US in 45 days if they are not sold by their Chinese-owned owners. The move puts pressure on ByteDance and Tencent to either sell their US operations to an American company or shut down the app in the country. WeChat is a messaging app developed by Tencent, whereas TikTok is a popular video-sharing app by ByteDance. Both apps were among 59 Chinese apps banned by the Indian government in late June.
What is WeChat and why does President Trump want to ban the ‘super app’?
Microsoft wants a slice of TikTok.
Microsoft eyes TikTok’s US operations
Microsoft appears to the front runner in acquiring TikTok’s US operations. If the two companies reach a deal, Microsoft would get to operate TikTok in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The size of the deal is not known, though CNBC speculates Microsoft could pay anywhere between $10 to $30 billion to acquire TikTok’s US operations from its parent company ByteDance. Meanwhile, The Financial Times heard from its sources that the Redmond, Washington-based software giant wants to buy TikTok’s global business, including the app’s operations in India and Europe. India is TikTok’s biggest market with over 650 million downloads, according to Sensor Tower. A deal would give Microsoft access to the data and TikTok’s algorithm that makes it different from similar video-sharing apps.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Note 20 series
During a live-streamed event from South Korea, Samsung on Wednesday announced two high-end Galaxy Note 20 smartphones; a new Galaxy Watch model; Galaxy Buds Live; two new tablets; and a successor to the Galaxy Fold. The new Galaxy Note 20 phones will go on sale on August 21 and they are not cheap. The Galaxy Note 20 will cost you Rs 77,999 for the base model, whereas the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra starts at Rs 104,999. Both smartphones are up for pre-order in India.

Google Pixel 4a starts at $349
This week, Google announced its new budget Pixel 4a, starting at just $349. The phone is aimed at Apple’s iPhone SE, which starts at $399. The Pixel 4a has a 5.8-inch OLED screen, Snapdragon 730G processor, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, audio and caption features and a single 12MP camera. Google has already confirmed the Pixel 4a will come to India in October, though the company is yet to confirm its price. The Pixel 4a is the most affordable smartphone in Google’s Pixel line of smartphones.

Apple announces new 27-inch iMac
Apple’s new 27-inch iMac also hogged limelight this week. While the design remains identical to previous iMacs, Apple upgraded the internal hardware of the all-in-one computer. The iMac is targeted at those people who are looking to replace their old computer in favour of the new iMac with a bigger, 5K screen, updated Intel processors, a 1080p HD webcam, improved speakers and microphones. The 27-inch iMac starts at Rs 169,900, and will go on sale in India later this month.

Apple replaces marketing chief Phil Schiller
In a surprise move, Apple announced this week that its marketing chief Phil Schiller will step down from his role and serve as an “Apple Fellow”. Schiller will be replaced by Greg Joswiak, who now holds the title of vice president of worldwide marketing. Schiller will continue his role as the head of Apple’s App Store and company events, Apple said in a statement. The veteran executive has worked at Apple since 1987.

Every 5G Phone Announced So Far So You Can Get a Faster Internet Connection
Who doesn’t want faster access to the internet? The next generation of mobile internet is 5G, which is short for “fifth generation,” and it’s on the way. When you have a 5G phone, you can expect exceptional data download and upload speeds.
There’s still a long way to go until 5G is as ubiquitous as the widely-available 4G, though, and we’re still taking our first baby steps into a faster future. Whether you think we need 5G or not, we’re seeing more and more manufacturers picking up the new standard — and the first commercially-available 5G phones are out now. Here is every phone that supports 5G, and a whole bunch of rumors about some that might.
Looking for the very best examples? We’ve made a list of the best 5G smartphones you can buy.
5G phones available now
5G phones by brand
Apple
There’s absolutely no doubt Apple will pick up 5G eventually, so the only question is when. At the moment, the whispers indicate that the iPhone giant won’t be looking to release a 5G iPhone until 2020 — so expect 5G capabilities on the iPhone in 2020.
This is no surprise, really. Apple can be slow to adopt new technology, just look at how long it took for it to adopt wireless charging and water-resistance. That’s not because Apple is lazy — far from it. Instead, Apple will likely only include the standard once it’s sure it works well and is not a waste of time. Being in a dominant market position, Apple can afford to wait.
Apple phones rumored to support 5G
Google
There haven’t been any rumors from Google about a 5G update for the Pixel range but it’s early days yet. The Pixel 4 came and went without a 5G variant, leading many to suspect the Pixel 5 may be the first 5G-supported Google phone. However, rumors have reached our ears of a 5G model of the Pixel 4a. If so, this would be a real surprise. Google’s midrange Pixel line may only have debuted last year, but it wasn’t expected to be the pioneering branch of the Pixel line where 5G is concerned. However, if true, this could be an excellent way into the 5G market for anyone who doesn’t want to spend big bucks on a 5G flagship phone.
Pixel phones rumored to support 5G
HMD Global (Nokia)
Well, it had us waiting for some time, but HMD Global has finally revealed the Nokia 8.3 5G — the first 5G-enabled Nokia phone.
While we’ve been waiting a while for this phone, it was more-or-less a foregone conclusion it would arrive eventually. Nokia has been very active in helping to build 5G infrastructure and was involved with 5G networks for the 2020 Olympics. In July 2018, T-Mobile also announced it was working with Nokia to help build a U.S. 5G network. Nokia could also make $3.50 for every single 5G phone released, thanks to its work on the standard.

Honor
Due to the Android licensing issues surrounding Huawei and Honor, the launch of Honor’s first 5G phone — the Honor V30 5G (also known as the Honor View 30 5G) — was a somewhat muted affair in the west. Still, it exists, opening the 5G floodgates for Huawei’s sister company. Are we likely to see more Honor phones with 5G? Absolutely. It seems sure the Honor 30S will launch with 5G after Honor president George Zhao was pictured on social media with it.

HTC
Despite rumors saying we’d be seeing a 5G HTC smartphone in the second half of 2019, we’ve heard very little from HTC. New rumors are saying a 5G HTC phone will arrive sometime in 2020. However, considering HTC’s terrible 2019, we wouldn’t be surprised to see such a phone pushed back again.
While we still haven’t seen a 5G phone from HTC yet, it has released a 5G hub your phone can use to connect to a 5G network.
Huawei
Huawei has made no secret of its ambitions for 5G, and first spoke about a handset with 5G support in February 2018. Back then, 2019 was the target date for release, and Huawei has hit that with the release of the folding, 5G-capable Huawei Mate X. Since then, Huawei has made hay, releasing the MatePad Pro 5G and Mate 20 X Pro 5G. We’re also expecting the upcoming P40 range to support 5G in at least one model.
With the Kirin 820 5G chip posting incredible benchmarks and Huawei being put in charge of building a lot of the UK’s 5G network, the 5G future is looking bright for Huawei.

LG
LG was hot out of the gate, and teamed up with Sprint to deliver the LG V50 ThinQ in early 2019, becoming one of the first 5G devices to hit the market. In fact, LG was so keen to get in on the 5G trend that it pushed the V50 ThinQ out a lot earlier than expected, with the phone landing on 20 June. LG gave 5G a rest for the LG G8 ThinQ, and has seemingly made it a V-range staple, adding 5G to the dual-screen LG V60 ThinQ.
LG phones confirmed to support 5G
Motorola/Lenovo
Motorola is in something of a unique position on this list because not only has it already released multiple phones with 5G capabilities, it’s also updating previous phones with 5G connectivity through a special Moto Mod. The Moto Z4 and Moto Z3 use Motorola’s Moto Mod attachment to add a 5G power pack accessory onto the back of the phone, making it possible to access 5G networks. The Moto Z2 Force, a 2017 flagship, will also get access to 5G through the mod after its Android Pie update — but only Verizon models will get that update.
The 5G Moto Mod wasn’t ready for launch earlier, but it’s finally available for from Verizon, having been released to match the switching on of Verizon’s 5G network.
But don’t expect Motorola to slow down just because it’s taken an early lead. 2020 is looking to feature more than a few Motorola phones with 5G, and top of that list is the Motorola Edge Plus. Motorola president Sergio Berniac has claimed the upcoming flagship device will sport the fastest 5G connection on the market. However, due to the cancelation of MWC, Motorola seems to have slowed down its release schedule.

OnePlus
OnePlus hasn’t gone mad with 5G releases, but it did jump on the bandwagon early with the OnePlus 7 Pro. The OnePlus 7T Pro was OnePlus’s second 5G phone, and OnePlus has continued its 5G support in the OnePlus 8 Pro. It’s probably a signifier of the increased maturity of 5G that OnePlus chose not to include “5G” in the title — essentially, it’s becoming more and more commonplace. Best of all, for fans of cheaper hardware, the OnePlus 8 also includes support for 5G.
OnePlus phones that support 5G
Oppo
Despite making early waves by being the first to access a 5G network, Oppo didn’t really capitalize by releasing a slew of 5G devices quickly. But that doesn’t mean it’s done nothing, and there are now a number of 5G Oppo devices available.
The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom 5G was the first, releasing in the U.K. on June 7. Since then, we’ve seen the China-only Reno 3 Pro 5G, and the stunning Find X2 Pro as well.
Oppo phones that support 5G
Realme
Relative newcomer Realme has so far excelled at providing strong phones at reasonable prices, and that philosophy has extended to its first 5G phone. The Realme X50 Pro 5G is a flagship-level device with a solid camera system that starts from just $650, making it one of the cheapest ways to access 5G.
Realme phones that support 5G
Samsung
Samsung is the largest mobile manufacturer in the world, and it would be silly to expect it to sit back and ignore 5G. Despite saying the S10 wouldn’t be Samsung’s first 5G device earlier in 2019, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G was Samsung’s first 5G phone, with the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G being the second, just pipping the Galaxy Fold to the post. As expected, the Galaxy S20 range has its fair share of 5G phones. While the smallest phone, the Galaxy S20, doesn’t support 5G, the S20 Plus and massive S20 Ultra both have 5G-enabled models.
Samsung announced a new focus on its midrange phones in 2018, and it has underlined that with the introduction of a 5G version of the midrange Galaxy A90. That said, while cheaper than Samsung’s more expensive flagships, it still costs about $800, so it’s hard to call it affordable. Samsung has rectified that a little bit by launching the Galaxy A71 5G and A51 5G, offering 5G connectivity for just $600 and $500 respectively.
Samsung phones that support 5G
Sony
While we didn’t see a 5G Sony phone in 2019, 2020 has seen the reveal of the Sony Xperia 1 II, Sony’s first 5G phone. Due to be announced at the ill-fated MWC 2020, Sony’s new flagship phone sports an upgraded camera, the Snapdragon 865, and a massive CinemaWide OLED display.
Will there be more 5G Sony phones? Sony is on Qualcomm’s list of 5G partners, so it makes sense we’ll be seeing more 5G-enabled phones from Sony over the year.
Sony phones that support 5G
Xiaomi
Chinese juggernaut Xiaomi laid its cards on the table earlier than most, announcing a 5G-capable model of its Mi Mix 3 was in the works. Xiaomi took to MWC 2019 to reveal the phone and released it in May 2019, making it one of the first companies to release a 5G phone. Since then we’ve seen a modest number of 5G offerings from Xiaomi, including the Xiaomi Mi 10 and the concept phone, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha.
Xiaomi phones that support 5G
ZTE
ZTE’s first 5G phone came in early 2019 when the Axon 10 Pro 5G released in Europe and China in May 2019. ZTE was a little quiet for the rest of 2019, but came roaring back in 2020 with the ZTE Axon 10s Pro. Like most other smartphone brands, these 5G devices are flagship-level phones, and come with top specs. ZTE’s sub-brand Nubia also announced a 5G phone: The Nubia X.

Mi Note 10 India launch teased
Mi Note 10, which is the global version of Mi CC9 Pro, is coming to India soon, teased the company’s India chief Manu Kumar Jain this week. While Manu Jain didn’t say exactly when we can expect to see the phone in the country, it is likely to arrive next month as the last major smartphone launch from the company. Mi Note 10 was introduced in Spain last month, whereas the Mi CC9 Pro debuted in China one day before the Mi Note 10.
Although Mi Note 10’s European pricing suggests a pretty expensive smartphone, it is most likely going to retail around the Mi CC9 Pro China pricing. The Mi CC9 Pro has been priced at CNY 2,799 (roughly Rs. 28,000) for the base 6GB + 128GB variant in Xiaomi’s home market, whereas the higher end 8GB + 128GB variant will set buyers back by CNY 3,099 (roughly Rs. 31,000). The premium edition of the phone, which is known as Mi Note 10 Pro outside China and packs 8GB of RAM and 256GB of inbuilt storage, carries a price tag of CNY 3,499 (roughly Rs. 35,000). It is unclear if the premium edition will also make its way to India.
To recall, Mi Note 10 features a 6.47-inch curved full-HD+ (1080×2340 pixels) OLED display and is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G SoC. There is up to 8GB of RAM onboard as well as 128GB of onboard storage. Other specifications of the phone include a penta cameta setup that houses a 108-megapixel main camera with f/1.69 aperture, a 20-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, a 5-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 2-megapixel macro camera.
Mi Note 10 also packs an in-display fingerprint sensor, 5,260mAh battery that supports 30W fast charging, and various connectivity options. Mi Note 10 Pro has almost the same specifications as Mi Note 10, however, it sports an 8P lens, while the Mi Note 10 sports a 7P lens in the main camera. Also, you get more onboard storage – 256GB.
Vivo U20 Review
WhatsApp for iPhone update, WhatsApp beta for Android
Facebook-owned WhatsApp released an update for its iPhone app this week that brought a couple of interesting new things. One of the changes is call waiting support. Yes, WhatsApp for iPhone will now inform you if someone else are trying to call you while you are on another call. This should help avoid missed calls. The other change is the tweaked chat screen that is designed to help you quickly scan chat massages. The new update carries the version number 2.19.120 and it also brings updated group privacy settings to anyone who was still missing them.
WhatsApp also released a new beta version for Android this week and while it didn’t have any user-facing changes, its code did reveal one under-development feature. WhatsApp seems to have restarted working on the Disappearing Messages feature. It is now called Delete Messages. It will work in both regular chats and groups, however in the case of latter, only group administrators will able to switch on the feature.
WhatsApp Disappearing Messages feature will allow users to delete any new messages after a certain period of time. This time can be chosen from 1-hour, 1-day, 1-week, 1-month, and 1-year. Once this option is selected any new messages sent in the regular chat or group will be deleted when their time is over. The Delete messages option will be available in Contact Info or Group Settings. The latest WhatsApp beta for Android was also seen carrying a dark mode version of Delete messages feature, suggesting the dark mode is well in development.
Vivo V17 launch, India release date, and Vivo Z5i makes its debut
Chinese smartphone maker Vivo earlier this week launched the new V17 in the Russian market. It is re-branded version of the Vivo S1 Pro that made its debut in Philippines last month. Vivo V17 is expected to be introduced in India on December 9 if an invite shared by the company recently is any indication. Vivo V17 India pricing remains a secret for now, however the price of V17 in Russia and Vivo S1 Pro’s Philippines price can give us some idea. The company retails V17 in Russia at RUB 22,990 (roughly Rs. 25,900), while the S1 Pro with same specifications carries a price tag of PHP 15,999 (roughly Rs. 22,500). So, we are expecting V17 to retail somewhere around Rs. 22-23,000 in India.
On the specifications front, Vivo V17 features a 6.38-inch full-HD+ (1080×2340 pixels) Super AMOLED display, in-display fingerprint scanner, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC, and 8GB of RAM. The phone also packs a diamond-shaped quad rear camera setup that houses a 48-megapixel primary shooter, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies, the Vivo V17 smartphone houses a 32-megapixel selfie camera sensor. You will also get 4,500mAh battery and 128GB of onboard storage.
Vivo V17 wasn’t the only new smartphone from Vivo this week, the company also unveiled Vivo Z5i. The Vivo Z5i shares pretty much all of its specifications with Vivo U3 and Vivo U20, both of which are essentially the same phone with different names. The company’s strategy of launching the same devices with different names in different countries is just baffling. Vivo Z5i is now on sale in China and carries a price tag of CNY 1,798 (roughly Rs. 18,300) for the sole 8GB RAM + 128GB storage configuration.
Redmi Note 8 Cosmic Purple colour, Redmi Note 8 Pro Electric Blue colour launched in India
Apart from teasing the India launch of Mi Note 10, Xiaomi also introduced one new colour variant each for Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro in the country this week. Starting with Redmi Note 8 that received the new Cosmic Purple colour. The new colour variant was also put on sale for the first-time week alongside Moonlight White, Neptune Blue, and Space Black colours. Apart from the new paintjob, there is no difference between other colour variants of the phone and Cosmic Purple. To recall, Redmi Note 8 price starts at Rs. 9,999 for the 4GB + 64GB storage variant and goes up to Rs. 12,999 for the 6GB + 128GB model.
Redmi Note 8 Pro got the new Electric Blue colour option in the country. It joined the existing Gamma Green, Halo White, and Shadow Black colour options. As you can expect, there is no difference between the Electric Blue version and the existing colours options for the Redmi Note 8 Pro, apart from the fresh coat of paint. To recall, Redmi Note 8 Pro is priced at Rs. 14,999 for the base 6GB + 64GB variant in India, while the 6GB + 128GB model sets buyers back by Rs. 15,999. The top end 8GB + 128GB version can be purchased at Rs. 17,999.

Honor V30, Honor V30 Pro launch, and other tech news
After weeks of teasers, Huawei’s sub-brand Honor unveiled the new Honor V30 and Honor V30 Pro smartphones in China. The two phones will be known as Honor View 30 and Honor View 30 Pro internationally. Honor V30 and its Pro variant share a lot of specifications and design. The two phones feature a 6.57-inch full-HD+ display, Kirin 990 SoC, up to 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. Both the phones also pack a triple rear camera setup and dual selfie camera housed in a hole-punch.
Additionally, the Honor V30 packs a 4,200mAh battery, whereas the Honor V30 Pro comes equipped with a smaller 4,100mAh battery. Both phones support 40W fast charging, but the Honor V30 Pro also offers support for 27W wireless fast charging. Honor V30 and V30 Pro go on sale in China this month and will be released internationally in Q1 2020, however, the missing Google apps will certainly impact their sales outside China.
Jio Fiber has reportedly stopped onboarding new subscribers on the preview plan and is finally signing up customers on the paid plans. This development comes almost three months after the Internet Service Provider (ISP) had launched its services commercially. This also means that preview plan consumers can soon expect to see them migrated to the paid plans. To recall, Jio offers plans starting at Rs. 699 per month. Its top-end plan costs Rs. 8,499 and offers data speeds up to 1Gbps.
As the Jio Fiber subscribers start paying of their data, they will likely have to deal with FUP. To make sure, they have enough high-speed data, the ISP has quietly introduced a plan voucher at Rs. 199 (without taxes) that brings unlimited high-speed data for seven days. The subscribers who exhaust their high-speed data quota can opt for this voucher to regain the high-speed Internet. The plan voucher will be available via My Jio app and the company website.
Cyber Monday 2019: Which Wireless Earbuds Should You Buy?
Meanwhile, Tata Sky has said to have discontinued a number of its long duration channel packs. Right now, Tata Sky consumers can only opt for SD Kerala Super plan and Marathi SD Basic plan for six-month and 12-month durations, rest all of the channel packs will not be offered for long duration plans. The exact reasoning behind the move is unclear. Tata Sky has also withdrawn a promotional offer that provided free six-month subscription of the Tata Sky Binge service on getting a new HD set-top box at Rs. 4,999.
In other DTH news, Sun Direct has reduced the price of its set-top box models and their pricing now starts at Rs. 1,799. While the standard resolution Sun Direct SD+ set-top box is priced at Rs. 1,799, the customers can get the high-definition Sun Direct HD+ set-top-box at Rs. 1,999. Sun Direct set-top box models can be ordered from the company website or from offline retailers.
Xiaomi expanded its smart TV lineup in India this week with the launch of Mi TV 4X 55-inch 2020 Edition. It carries a price tag of Rs. 34,999 and will go on sale through Amazon, Mi.com, and Mi Home stores starting at 12pm (noon) on December 2. The Mi TV 4X 55-inch 2020 Edition runs Android 9 Pie with PatchWall 2.0 UI on top. It packs a 55-inch 4K HDR 10-bit display, a quad-core Amlogic Cortex-A53 CPU, 2GB of DDR RAM, and 8GB eMMC storage. Xiaomi has also provided two 10W built-in speakers with support for Dolby Audio.
In smart speaker news, Google has brought its Nest Mini to the Indian market. Launched earlier this week, this Google Assistant-powered smart speaker has been priced at Rs. 4,499 and is now on sale via Flipkart. Google Nest Mini smart speaker is a successor to the two-year-old Google Home Mini and promises better sound quality along with the familiar Google Assistant-powered experience.
Google Nest Mini in India: Everything You Need to Know
Lastly, Flipkart is all set to launch its Nokia-branded smart TV models next week in the country. The e-retailer is hosting a press event on December 5 where the new smart TV models will be showcased. Nothing is known about the upcoming TVs at this point, apart from the fact that they will use JBL sound technology. This will be second such launch of Flipkart, which had earlier said to have partnered with Motorola to launch Motorola-branded Android TVs in India.

Xiaomi’s Mi 9 includes a triple lens rear camera and wireless charging
Mobile World Congress, the mobile industry’s annual shindig, is next week but Xiaomi can’t wait reveal its newest top-end phone. The Chinese company instead picked today to unveil the Mi 9.
Once again Xiaomi’s design ethic closely resembles Apple’s iPhone with a minimal bezel and notch-like front-facing camera but Xiaomi has gone hard on photography with a triple lens camera.
There are two models available with the regular Mi 9 priced from RMB 2999, or $445, and the Mi 9SE priced from RMB 1999, or $300. A premium model, the Transparent Edition, includes beefed-up specs for RMB 2299, $342.
The phone runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset and the headline feature, or at least the part that Xiaomi is shouting about most, is the triple lens camera array the back of the device. That trio combines a 48-megapixel main camera with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, Xiaomi said. The benefits of that lineup is improved wide-angle shots, better quality close-up photography and performance in low-light conditions, according to the company.
The premium Mi 9 model, the Transparent Edition, sports 12GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage and features a transparent back cover
There’s also a ‘supermoon’ mode for taking shots of the moon and presumably other night sky images, while Xiaomi touts an improved night mode and, on the video side, 960fps capture and advanced motion tracking. We haven’t had the chance to test these out, which is worth noting at this point.
Xiaomi also talked up the battery features of the Mi 9, which ships with an impressive 3300mAh battery that features wireless charging support and Qi EPP certification meaning it will work with third-party charging mats. Xiaomi claims that the Mi 9 can charge to 70 percent in 30 minutes, and reach 100 percent in an hour using 27W wired charging.
Alongside the Mi 9, it unveiled its third three wireless charging products — a charging pad (RMB 99, $15), a car charger (RMB 169, $25) and a 10,000mAh wireless power bank (RMB 149, $22.)
Xiaomi, as ever, offers a range of different options for customers as follows:
Mi 9 with 6GB and 128GB for RMB 2999, $445
Mi 9 with 8GB and 128GB for RMB 3299, $490
Mi 9 with 12GB and 256GB for RMB 3999, $595
Mi 9SE with 6GB and 128GB for RMB 1999, $300
Mi 9SE with 6GB and 128GB for RMB 2299, $342 (Transparent Edition)
Notably, the Mi 9 goes on sale February 26 — pre-orders open this evening — with the SE version arriving on March 1. As expected, the launch market is China but you can imagine that India — where Xiaomi is among the top players — and other global launches will follow.
Xiaomi said it plans to announce more products on Sunday, the eve of Mobile World Congress. It recently teased a foldable phone so it’ll be interesting to see if it will follow suit and join Samsung, which had its first foldable phone outed by a leak.
What to expect from Mobile World Congress 2019

Unboxing
“Ten Years of Tribute” extra-large carton (media edition, non-retail packaging). From this detail, we can see that Redmi has become the orthodox inheritor of Xiaomi mobile phones that insisted on the ultimate cost-effectiveness.
The first generation of Xiaomi mobile phones-“The undead Android is a good toy Xiaomi mobile phone review ”
Xiaomi has specially reserved and bound the ” Evaluation of a Good Toy Xiaomi Mobile Phone ” written by us nine years ago. Looking at the work written by Teacher Yonghui back then, it is still in the era of Android 2.3, with a simple and original interface, which has a sense of age.
Redmi K30 Extreme Edition Design & Appearance
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition is still a rare 5G flagship with a true full screen.
The quality of this screen is quite good, a 6.67-inch pop-up full screen, a resolution of 2400 x 1080 FHD+, a peak brightness of 1200 nit, and a contrast ratio of 5000000:1. The regret of the high screen refresh that was left on the Redmi K30 Pro series has been made up-upgrade the 120Hz refresh rate + 240Hz touch sampling rate.
The breathing light was originally a standard configuration of mobile phones, but the structure of flagship phones has become more and more complicated, and various manufacturers have canceled it by default. The Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition follows the pop-up + breathing light design of the K20 series. Different notification scenes display different color lighting effects, such as charging blue lighting effects and incoming green lighting effects to achieve a multi-dimensional reminder effect.
The Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition is available in three colors: Muyue White, Extreme Night Black, and Mint Green. What we got is Mu Yue White. At the bottom are the USB-C interface and SIM card slot.
It should be noted that, unlike the Redmi K30 Pro, the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition eliminates the 3.5 mm headphone jack, but retains the infrared remote control and NFC.
Redmi K30 Extreme Edition Performance
Many people are chanting “MTK YES” this year, and MediaTek has indeed handed over a very eye-catching report card: Previously, the latest Digitimes research report showed that in the second quarter of this year, China’s smartphone AP (application processing) market, MediaTek ranked first with 38.3%, surpassing Qualcomm’s 37.8%. In the not-too-short days, the proportion of MediaTek in domestic mobile phones is believed to be higher and higher.
However, from commercially available models, the main force of Fage may be more focused on the high-end MediaTek Dimensity 800 series. The flagship Dimensity 1000+ was previously equipped with only one model. Now the Redmi K30 Supreme Commemoration The addition of the version is undoubtedly another boost.
7nm process technology
In 2019 and even now in 2020, most of the flagship and sub-flagship SoCs use the 7nm process. However, when we delve into the processes of various SoCs, we will find that there seem to be some differences in the 7nm of different products.
For example, TSMC’s N7 (N7FF) is applied to Snapdragon 855, Kirin 990, and Apple A12; TSMC’s N7P is applied to Snapdragon 865, Apple A13, and Dimensity 1000L; TSMC’s N7+ is applied to Kirin 990 5G; Samsung’s 7LPP is applied to Exynos 9825, Snapdragon 765G.
Among them, TSMC began mass production of the 7nm process in 2018. The N7 (or N7FF) just mentioned is the first batch of TSMC 7nm solutions, and DUV is the first generation solution. In 2019, TSMC launched the N7P, which is the second-generation 7nm, which is an improved version of the first-generation N7 solution. It still uses DUV and the same design guidelines.
N7+ is different from N7P. It starts to use EUV extreme ultraviolet lithography. According to TSMC, the overall performance will be better than N7. It is currently unclear which solution was adopted for the Dimensity 1000+ 7nm process. From the perspective of the Dimensity 1000L using TSMC’s N7P, the Dimensity 1000+ must be the same.
CPU
Dimensity 1000+ directly integrates four Cortex-A77 large cores and four Cortex-A55 small cores, with frequencies of 2.6GHz and 2.0GHz respectively. The performance of A77 is 20% higher than that of A76. A76 is a very successful core architecture launched by ARM. The combination with the 7nm TSMC process brings a huge performance and efficiency leap, such as the Snapdragon 855.
Cortex-A77 is the direct successor of A76. The new core is largely consistent with the previous generation products. While maintaining the excellent energy efficiency of the A76 architecture and a smaller core area, it further improves performance. The A77 architecture still uses the ARMv8.2 CPU core and is intended to be paired with the Cortex-A55 small core. Besides, compared with the A76, the basic configuration of the A77 has not changed. You can still see the 64KB L1 instruction and L1 cache, and the 256 or 512KB L2 cache.
In general, the improvement of A77 over A76 is not as large as that of A76 over A75. It is still a continuation of high-performance and energy-efficient products (which regarded as an improved version of A76).
For the identity of the evaluation machine, GeekBench has been blocked from the Internet access, so here we will refer to the performance level of Dimensity 1000+ CPU from the running score data collected by Fast Technology in the past.
According to the measurement standard of Geekbench 5, the performance of Dimensity 1000+ single-core is between Snapdragon 765G and Snapdragon 865, 23% more than Snapdragon 765G and only 14% lower than Snapdragon 865. In terms of multi-core, there is a clear distinction between mid-range cores and flagship cores. Snapdragon 765G falls behind Dimensity 1000+ with a gap of 33%, while Dimensity 1000+ and Snapdragon 865 are only 12% behind.
In other words, according to the evaluation system of Geekbench 5, whether it is a single score that reflects absolute performance or a multi-core test that tests scheduling coordination, Dimensity 1000+ is the same as the Snapdragon 865 and belongs to the flagship camp. The mid-to-high-end Snapdragon 765G has opened a huge gap.
If we can remove the blocking of network permissions in the future, we will test the performance of Geekbench 5 of the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition.
GPU
On the GPU side, Dimensity 1000+ integrates nine Mali-G77 cores, which improves performance by up to 40% compared to G76, and supports 90-frame chicken games and 120-frame racing games. Mali-G77 GPU adopts a new architecture Valhall. According to ARM’s official statement, Mali-G77 has a 30% increase in performance, a 30% increase in performance, and a 60% increase in machine learning performance over the previous generation.
Under the same process and the same performance, G77 continues to achieve 30% year-on-year energy efficiency improvement, and saves 50% power consumption compared with Mali-G72, which means that the final performance of Mali-G77 is close to the GPU performance of Apple A12, surpassing Qualcomm Adreno 640. In the current first echelon of mobile GPU.
For the same reason, GFXBench has also been blocked from network access and cannot run, so here we will refer to the performance level of Dimensity 1000+ GPU based on the benchmark data collected by Kuaidi Technology in the past.
Among the above test sub-items, the best performance of GPU graphics computing power is Manhattan (Manhattan), Tyrannosaurus (T-Rex), and Aztec ruins test scenes. The Tyrannosaurus rex test is biased towards GPU texture and fills rate throughput, and Manhattan is the core heavy task of the shader.
From the histogram compiled by Fast Technology, it is not difficult to find that the performance of Dimensity 1000+ GPU is tightly biting the Snapdragon 865, which is known for its graphics capabilities. The smallest gap between the two is only 5% and at most only 12%.
In terms of GFXBench’s overall GPU graphics computing performance test results, Dimensity 1000+ is extremely close to the Snapdragon 865 (a slight gap of 5% to 12%).
AnTuTu running scores
The same reason for the confidentiality of the evaluation machine information is still the same. AnTuTu has been disabled from Internet access to the running score software. Therefore, the running scores here are only for initial reference. The final score is recommended to be based on the results after the listing.
According to AnTuTu’s evaluation system, the performance level of the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition is roughly between the Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 855 models.
Androbench test
About Androbench: AndroBench is a benchmark application that can measure the 4K random storage and storage performance of Android devices, including internal or external storage. Typical dual-channel UFS 2.1 flash memory speed
4. “Fage” exclusive gameplay: 5G+5G dual card dual standby
MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ is a 5G single chip that supports dual-carrier aggregation, which can aggregate two 100MHz carriers to obtain 200MHz bandwidth. It is worth mentioning that China Unicom and China Telecom have already jointly built and shared the 3.5GHz 200MHz 5G frequency band across the country, that is, 3400MHz-3600MHz. Dimensity 1000+ dual-carrier aggregation technology can just be used.
It supports NSA/SA dual-mode, TDD/FDD dual-standard, naturally, it also supports 5G+5G dual card dual standby, and supports any combination of NSA+SA, SA+SA, and can experience different 5G networks at the same time, of course, t also supports 4G+5G dual card dual standby.
Thanks to Dimensity 1000+’s 5G+5G dual-SIM dual-standby feature blessing, Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition has become a 5G mobile phone that supports 5G+5G dual-sim dual-standby, which is different from Redmi K30 and Redmi One big difference between K30 Pro and other models.
That is to say, in the 5G network environment, whether it is China Mobile, China Unicom, or telecommunications users, they can receive 5G signals from different operators at the same time, realize dual-card 5G standby, and switch to better 5G networks at any time.
At the same time, the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition also adds support for more 5G frequency bands such as n79 based on the regular 5G frequency band, to achieve full support for n1/n3/n41/n78/n79 (n1, n3 need to be released by the operator through software Upgrade support).
However, the 5G network construction of the three major operators is still steadily advancing. When the actual network speed is measured, because the network stability of different regions, different times, and different operators may be different, the results of the network speed measurement may be somewhat different from what you experience.
Battery
Batteries have always been an important aspect of Redmi’s uncompromising even during the Redmi era, and large batteries have almost become a brand label.
Compared with the Redmi K30 Pro, the battery of the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition has little change. It is equipped with a 4500 mAh battery, which is slightly smaller than the 4700 mAh K30 Pro, but there is no obvious impact on battery life.
The Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition is also equipped with a relatively fast 33W wired fast charge at the same price based on a large battery. Next, let us test the endurance and charging performance of the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition through actual measurements.
The picture quality and frame rate of “Peace Elite” are all set to the highest level it can achieve, and the average discharge current is monitored to be about 740mA. From this, it can be estimated that the Redmi K30 Extreme Edition is at HDR HD + ultra-high frame rate. Under the circumstances, the game life of “Peace Elite” may reach 6 hours.
Under the condition of 70% brightness and 30% volume, connect to Wi-Fi to play 1080P online video. We have monitored that the average discharge current is about 405mA. From this, it can be estimated that the continuous video playback life in this environment can almost reach 11 About hours.
The Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition is equipped with a 33W charge pump fast charge, which is faster than the 30W of the Xiaomi 10 in terms of paper parameters. It can recover blood from 15% to 95% in 50 minutes when the screen is turned on.
Cameras
Let’s review the previous Redmi K30 Pro: 64MP Sony IMX686 + 13MP ultra-wide-angle lens (123°) + 5MP telephoto macro lens (AF 3-10cm) + 2MP depth-of-field lens (1.75μm).
This time, the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition is adjusted based on Redmi K30 Pro. When we got the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition, the official did not mention the specific model of each image sensor, so we obtained the specific model of the camera image sensor of our review machine through debugging:
Sony IMX682 64 Megapixel main camera + SK Hynix hi1337 13 Megapixels ultra-wide-angle lens + Samsung S5K5E9 5 million pixel telephoto macro lens + OV02B 2 Megapixel portrait depth of field lens. Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition bug report shows the camera module model.
That is to say, according to the situation of the evaluation machine in our hands, compared with the Redmi K30 Pro, the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition has the main camera adjusted from Sony IMX686 to IMX682 (the difference between the two is not big), and the ultra-wide-angle has changed from 123° There is almost no change beyond 119°.
However, it should be noted that the Redmi K30 Extreme Edition on the MediaTek platform has a different imaging color style than the Redmi K30 Pro on the higher communication platform, and the imaging color is relatively richer.

Redmi K30 Extreme Edition Verdict
We are not unfamiliar with the specifications of the Redmi K30 Extreme Edition. Many configurations have been seen on the K30 Pro. The changes are nothing more than customizing Samsung’s 120Hz AMOLED screen, discarding the 3.5mm headphone jack in exchange for dual speakers, and adjusting the SoC to Dimensity 1000. +, the main camera lens is adjusted to IMX682, with a slight weight reduction, the battery is also slightly less.
It does not have as many top technologies as the Xiaomi Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition, but the focus is on the price of “1999”, which is enough to make competitors who are competing for the price/performance ratio all exit. This is the most cost-effective product in the 1999 price range. There is no one. If the budget happens to be in this range, you can buy it directly without any hesitation:
The Redmi K30 Extreme Edition has a 120Hz E3 material Samsung Amoled high refresh screen, this screen is unbeatable at the price of 1999 yuan! Even compared to the more expensive Redmi K30 Pro, there is no “shrink”. The contrast ratio reaches 5000000:1, the maximum brightness is 800 nits, and the peak brightness reaches 1200 nits. It has passed the HDR10+ certification and has a high refresh rate of 120Hz+ The 240Hz touch sampling rate has been further upgraded.
In terms of performance, through the comparison with Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 756G shown in the article, we can see that Dimensity 1000+ is a platform that is close to Snapdragon 865, whether it is CPU (the le-core gap is about 14%, more The core gap is 12%), or the GPU (5%-12% gap), which is by no means a mid-range U such as the Snapdragon 765G, which is mostly used by models in the same price range.
It is worth mentioning that, under the blessing of the MediaTek Dimensity platform, the Redmi K30 Extreme Edition even gets the special function of dual 5G standby that its top flagship does not have. Also, the 4500 mAh battery + 33W fast charge makes it have no shortcomings in daily use.
Just like the first generation of Xiaomi phones that opened the “1999” generation of price-performance legends, the Redmi K30 Extreme Edition can be bought with confidence.

Major players in the smart TV market are Sony Corporation, LG Electronics, Inc, TCL Corporation, Koninklijke Philips N.V., Haier Electronics Group Co., Ltd, Panasonic Corporation, Samsung Electronics, Apple Inc., Toshiba Corporation, and Hitachi Ltd.
The global smart TV market is expected to grow from $176.7 billion in 2019 and to $181.6 billion in 2020 at a growth rate of 2.78%. The slow growth in 2020 is mainly due to the economic slowdown across countries owing to the COVID-19 outbreak and the measures to contain it. The market is then expected to grow and reach $232.1 billion in 2023 at CAGR of 8.53%.
The smart TV market consists of sales of smart TV and related services that are used in homes, offices and education sectors. A smart TV is a digital TV that is basically an entertainment-specific, internet-connected, storage-ware device.
Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing region in the smart TV market in the forecast period.
In August 2019, Samba TV, a San Francisco-based company, provider of global TV data and audience analytics acquired Axwave Inc. for $30 million. This acquisition strengthens Samba's market-leading understanding of global television advertising and improves the company's ability to cross-platform monitor scope, frequency and conversion to real-world business results, including tune-in. Axwave, Inc., a California-based company, leading platform for real-time audio content recognition, and an international software development company that developed a proprietary fingerprinting-based automatic content recognition (ACR) technology.
The smart TV market covered in this report is segmented by product type into 4K UHD TV; Full HD TV; HDTV; 8K TV. It is also segmented by panel type: LCD; LED; OLED; QLED and by end user into home; offices; education institutions; other.
The taxation of smart TV’s is a key factor hampering the growth of the smart TV market. Television is the only group in which two Goods and Services Tax (GST) levels apply. Television sales of up to 32 inches are falling, accounting for 55 percent of overall sales in 2019 compared to 75 percent two years ago as consumers want to buy bigger displays, customers are delaying purchases anticipating a tax cut. For instance, in India, smart TVs are put under the highest tax slab of the Goods and Services Tax, with customers paying 28% of the already exorbitant prices at which TVs are priced. Therefore, the taxation of smart TV’s is expected to limit the growth of the smart TV market.
The 8K TV is a key trend in the smart TV market. The 8K TV sets have 33 million pixels, compared to 8 million pixels in a 4K package. All those millions of extra pixels provide clearer, more accurate images than the 4 K UHD TVs. The 8K Ultra HD doubles the 4K Ultra HD resolution, and it is 16 times the full HD resolution. In 2020, LG unveiled three new 8K versions and this year, Samsung tripled its 8K QLEDs. Therefore, TV manufacturers are gradually promoting 8K TVs as their 2020 flagship sets.
The rising popularity of video-on-demand service is a key factor driving the growth of the smart TV market. Video on Demand (VoD) is one of the innovative features that Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) gives. VoD gives consumers a range of available videos to choose from. The video is transmitted via the Real-Time Streaming Protocol. In the recent years VOD has gained tremendous popularity, this has resulted in higher smart TV adoption rates. For instance, in 2019, US providers were the pioneer of VoD users. Amazon Prime Video came at first with 72%, Netflix was second with 63%. In 2019, 53% of users spent more than $11 a month on streaming services, in 2018 the figure was only 43%. Therefore, the rising trend of video-on-demand service is expected to drive the growth of the smart TV market.

Sourcing and Referencing: Data and analysis throughout the report is sourced using end notes. Major players in the 5G services market are AT&T, Verizon Communications, Inc., China Mobile, Vodafone, Telstra, China Telecom, Deutsche Telecom, SK Telecom, Saudi Telecom Company, and T-Mobile USA Inc.
The global 5G services market is expected to grow from $49.7 billion in 2019 to about $68.6 billion in 2020 as the demand for high-speed and better quality data services is increasing as people are staying indoors and spending more time on the internet for work as well as leisure purposes. The market is expected to stabilize and reach $128.1 billion at a CAGR of 26.7% through 2023.
The 5G services market consists of sales of 5G and its related services. 5G is 5th generation services that evaluate networks to interconnect people, control machines, devices, and objects. 5G services will deliver the high levels of efficiency and performance that will empower to connect new industries and new user experience. 5G delivers the speed as high as 20 Gbps and is likely to refine a broad range of services in industries ranging from transportation to retail, education to entertainment, medical to an automotive and wide array of the internet of things (IoT).
The global 5G services market has been geographically segmented into North America, Western Europe, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, South America and Middle East & Africa. Asia Pacific was the largest region in the 5g services market in 2019.
In April 2018, T-Mobile Inc., a mobile telecommunications company based in Germany announced the merger with the Sprint Corporation telecommunication company for an amount of $26.5 billion. The merger is expected to form a new company that would be well-positioned to provide a robust 5G wireless communication service network in order to compete with Verizon and AT&T. Sprint Corporation, founded in 1899, is an American telecommunications company based in Kansas, USA.
The 5G services market covered in this report is segmented by communication type into fixed wireless access (FWA); enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB); ultra-reliable and low latency communications (uRLLC) ; massive machine-type communications (mMTC) and by end-user into manufacturing; energy & utilities; media & entertainment; IT & telecom; transportation & logistics; healthcare.
The high cost of 5G smartphones and related devices is expected to limit the growth of the 5G services market in the coming years. According to executives of leading companies such as Xiaomi, Samsung and OnePlus in January 2020, the price of 5G smartphone chipsets is twice as costly as the price of 4G smartphone chipsets. Consequently, expensive parts result in a high cost of production leading to higher prices of 5G smartphones. This scenario is anticipated to adversely impact the growth of the 5G Services market over the forecast period.
The introduction of AI-powered services is a major trend shaping the growth of the 5G services market. The commercial usage of 5G services is expanding rapidly. The growth in the number of connections and cloud-based AR or VR is generating higher demand for 5G services with greater bandwidth, wide-coverage, and low latency networks. In 2016, Huawei started applying AI to technical work and business processes to serve its customers and as of 2019, Huawei provided more than 5,80,000 cases of technical support on more than 1,700 networks across the globe. Therefore, the introduction of AI in 5G services in order to increase the accuracy and agileness is to act as a major trend for 5G services market.
Rising demand from the Internet of Things (IoT) is anticipated to contribute to higher demand for 5G services in order to deliver high performance and efficiency. According to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), the global market revenue for the Internet of Things (IoT) is projected to reach $ 1.1 trillion by the end of 2025. The IoT connections across the globe are expected to increase from 7 billion in 2017 to 25 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 17% during the forecast period. Therefore, growing demand for IoT and the requirement to connect smart devices with high-speed internet boost the revenue for the 5G services market over the forthcoming years.

With the kind of fan following the Poco brand enjoys in India, the advent of a successor or a Season 2 was only inevitable. The momentous and long overdue arrival of the new Poco is finally done with and we now need to answer if the Poco X2 got crushed under the elephantine expectations or whether it managed to emerge victorious.
Before we proceed with our Poco X2 review, let’s address what all Poco fans must already know – The X2 is rebranded Redmi K30 4G and it’s not a successor to the F1 (review). We might, after all, see the more powerful Poco F2 materialize soon. Poco has positioned its X2 against the Realme X2 and that explains, well, the ‘X2’ moniker.
Of course, none of that naming chatter should matter if all you are looking for is to buy a decent phone that offers excellent value and can hold well in the long run. Is the Redmi K30 4G deserving enough to be the Poco X2? Is it a phone that you can buy? Let’s now talk details and present our take on Poco S02E01.
Poco X2 Price and Specifications
Model Poco X2 Display 6.67-inch Full HD+ (1080 X 2400), HDR10, 120Hz

Dimensions and weight 165.3 x 76.6 x 8.8 mm; 208 grams Rear Camera 64MP Quad-cam: 64MP Sony IMX686 (F1.9), 8MP Ultra Wide Angle, 2MP Macro Lens, 2MP depth sensor Front camera 20MP + 2MP Core hardware 6 + 64GB ; 6+128GB ; 8 + 256GB Processor and OS Octa-core Qualcomm SDM730 Snapdragon 730G (8 nm) with MIUI (Android 10) Battery and Charging 4500mAh; 27W fast charging Others Side-mounted Fingerprint, magnetic sensor, light sensor, distance sensor, gravity, Accelerometer, TYPE-C, USB 2.0 Price 6 + 64GB – Rs. 15,999
6+128GB – Rs. 16,999
8 + 256GB – Rs. 19,999
Poco X2: Design and Display
Over the last year, our phones have evolved to be yet bigger and bulkier which is why we felt at home with the Poco X2 in spite of its 8.8mm thick waistline and 208 grams of heft. The phone has a plastic side frame and a glass back with a Mate 30-like circular accent around the quad-camera array that looks good. The camera module sticks out quite a bit and the bundled cover barely evens out the hump.
The X2 comes in three flashy gradient options – Atlantis Blue, Matrix Purple, and Phoenix Red. We were at least hoping for Poco-exclusive colors for India, or a more sober option, but these are the same gradients that are available for Redmi K30 in China.
On the front, it’s mostly display and a dual-camera punch-hole notch that makes the phone stand out. Now we have had wide punch-hole notches before and even appreciated them, but something about the cut-out on the Poco X2 doesn’t feel quite right. We could make out that the edges aren’t very neat and this can get a bit annoying.
The IPS LCD panel can’t quite compare to the AMOLED punch, but it’s still a fine panel. Colors appear well-calibrated, contrast is high, the screen is HDR10 compliant, and HD streaming is supported across apps, and the outdoor visibility is above average if not outright impressive.
The start highlight is the 120Hz refresh rate which makes screen transitions and scrolling amazingly smooth on the X2. We believe this enhances the experience even for people who aren’t particularly into gaming, but no so much over the 90Hz screens.
The side-mounted fingerprint sensor, which is also the power button, proved to be surprisingly good. It’s quite convenient to access, snappy and very reliable. The fingerprint scan kicks in right when you place your thumb on the sensor and we never had to rely on the face unlock (which, too, works fast).
The handset has a USB Type-C port and retains the good old audio jack. The speaker placement to the left is a bit odd, though. Many a time we inadvertently blocked the speaker grill while holding the phone in landscape mode and had to realign.
Poco X2 has an IR Blaster and that’s an extra you wouldn’t find on the Redmi K30.

Poco X2: Performance and software
I know Poco fans would have expected a Snapdragon 855 or Snapdragon 855+ powered phone to match the Realme X2 Pro, but the Snapdragon 730G powering the X2 Pro is in itself quite welcome for the aggressive price – especially since it’s backed by oodles of RAM and storage (UFS 2.1).
The day-to-day usage and gaming performance is quite impressive. The Android 10-based MIUI 11 isn’t our favorite custom interface, but it’s feature-rich, stable and gets the job done. The default launcher is Poco launcher, which is in line with our personal preferences.
We did notice bloatware and numerous app stubs, but are yet to come across ads (surely can’t rule them out). In our initial time with the device, we haven’t noticed any call or connectivity related issues.

Poco X2 Camera review
The Poco X2 is the first phone in India to employ the 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor. The primary camera is accompanied by the usual suspects – 8MP wide-angle camera, 2MP depth sensor, and 2MP macro camera.
The Sony sensor that takes center stage operates on the same principle as the 64MP Samsung GW1.
We are yet to complete our camera testing, but initial results seem quite good or at the very least are at par with what we usually get in the sub-20K price segment.

Poco X2 Battery and Audio
Even with the display tuned to refresh at 120Hz, the battery can conveniently last for more than a day. And the charging is lightning fast! The 27W charging adapter bundled in the box takes just about one hour for a full charge. Of course, the Realme X2 Pro has faster 50W charging, but what the Poco X2 offers is more than enough for our needs.
The audio output from the speaker is quite decent, but as mentioned earlier, the speaker placement is far from perfect and the grill often gets blocked in the landscape orientation.

Poco X2 intial impressions
Poco X2 crams an extraordinary amount of trends and hardware for a very affordable price and that should make it impossible to ignore and incredibly hard to pass over. The practical usage experience, however, falls a bit short of the glorified spec-sheet.
Don’t get me wrong. The Poco X2 is an excellent phone for gamers and power users, and one of the best available options for its price. But we wouldn’t go as far as saying that it’s ‘the best’ option in its class that should suit most buyers. But yes, if you are a Xiaomi or Poco fan, the X2 certainly won’t disappoint.
To sum it up, the X2 has a powerful chipset, runs the latest Android version, offers an impressive battery backup. The design and the unsightly notch didn’t quite live up to our expectations.
Pros
Powerful performance
Android 10-based software
Excellent battery mileage and fast charging
120Hz display refresh rate
Cons
The extended notch looks and feels weird
Hands on: Poco X2 Review With the kind of fan following the Poco brand enjoys in India, the advent of a successor or a Season 2 was only inevitable.

Xiaomi’s Mi 9 includes a triple lens rear camera and wireless charging
Mobile World Congress, the mobile industry’s annual shindig, is next week, but Xiaomi can’t wait to reveal its newest top-end phone. The Chinese company instead picked today to unveil the Mi 9.
Once again Xiaomi’s design ethic closely resembles Apple’s iPhone, with a minimal bezel and notch-like front-facing camera, but Xiaomi has gone hard on photography with a triple lens camera.
There are two models available, with the regular Mi 9 priced from RMB 2,999, or $445, and the Mi 9SE priced from RMB 1,999, or $300. A premium model, the Transparent Edition, includes beefed-up specs for RMB 3,999, or $595.
The phone runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset and the headline feature, or at least the part that Xiaomi is shouting about most, is the triple lens camera array on the back of the device. That trio combines a 48-megapixel main camera with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, Xiaomi said. The benefits of that lineup are improved wide-angle shots, better-quality close-up photography and performance in low-light conditions, according to the company.
The premium Mi 9 model, the Transparent Edition, sports 12GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage and features a transparent back cover
There’s also a “supermoon” mode for taking shots of the moon and presumably other night-sky images, while Xiaomi touts an improved night mode and, on the video side, 960fps capture and advanced motion tracking. We haven’t had the chance to test these out, which is worth noting at this point.
Xiaomi also talked up the battery features of the Mi 9, which ships with an impressive 3,300mAh battery that features wireless charging support and Qi EPP certification, meaning it will work with third-party charging mats. Xiaomi claims that the Mi 9 can charge to 70 percent in 30 minutes, and reach 100 percent in an hour using 27W wired charging.
Alongside the Mi 9, it unveiled its three wireless charging products — a charging pad (RMB 99, $15), a car charger (RMB 169, $25) and a 10,000mAh wireless power bank (RMB 149, $22.)
Xiaomi, as ever, offers a range of different options for customers, as follows:
Mi 9 with 6GB and 128GB for RMB 2,999, $445
Mi 9 with 8GB and 128GB for RMB 3,299, $490
Mi 9 with 12GB and 256GB for RMB 3,999, $595 (Transparent Edition)
Mi 9SE with 6GB and 128GB for RMB 1,999, $300
Mi 9SE with 6GB and 128GB for RMB 2,299, $342
Notably, the Mi 9 goes on sale February 26 — pre-orders open this evening — with the SE version arriving on March 1. As expected, the launch market is China but you can imagine that India — where Xiaomi is among the top players — and other global launches will follow.
Xiaomi said it plans to announce more products on Sunday, the eve of Mobile World Congress. It recently teased a foldable phone, so it’ll be interesting to see if it will follow suit and join Samsung, which had its first foldable phone outed by a leak.
What to expect from Mobile World Congress 2019
