It's the winter season: In the ski season 1989 and only for the short period of four weeks, Maersk Air operated a weekly charter to Samedan/St. Moritz airport, Europe's highest airport in the Alpine Engiadina valley. The flights were operated by the STOL-capable Dash 7 of the carrier of which it maintained five units between 1982 and 1989. Although the flights were well received by Danish tourists, it remained the sole attempt to establish incoming charter flights to the small airport. Several hurdles were associated with the plan: Samedan was - and is - designed to handle private flights and biz-jets with only small passenger numbers, and thus lacks any conventional check-in facilities. Also airline-style handling equipment from baggage carts to meal trolleys had to be trucked to the airfield for the isolated flights.
Nevertheless, it was a welcome sight to watch an airliner operate into the scenic airfield, well worth taking the four-hour ride (each way) to get there. If meal trolleys can do that, so can the photographer...
