thinking about the amazing bait and switch dynamic with Toby and Sam. like, you see Sam as the ultimate golden retriever friend; the sweet, innocent puppy that’s soooo idealistic and can do no wrong. and of course Toby, the classic black cat cynic who hates everyone and himself.

but then you realize that Toby is really the bleeding heart with the unflinching moral principles, who will stand up to the president of the United States if it means standing up for what he believes in. who cares so much it hurts and is willing to break apart the government if he thinks it will be better. and then Sam, who trusts the political process so much he’d defend a position he doesn’t really agree with. it’s just so perfect.

I personally love watching West Wing and Madam Secretary because I get to pretend for 42 minutes at a time that we have a sensible person in the White House. And life is good.
