Teething takes a few months to begin for the little bundle of joy. While you may not believe it is necessary, you may still care for their gums throughout that period.

Published: Aug 2, 2023
I was contacted by lawyers in Salt Lake City about a 13-year-old boy whose divorced parents were in litigation over his social transition. Zach had recently declared himself a girl, and his mother was 100 percent on board—new name, pronouns, dresses. His father wasn't going along with it.
I reviewed the records from Zach's recent psychiatric hospitalization. Staff listed gender dysphoria as one of his diagnoses and consistently used his girl's name and female pronouns, but the reasoning for those clinical decisions was absent. The hospital records indicated Zach heard voices and saw "ghosts." I searched for more information about the voices and the ghosts but found none.
Was it possible no one had asked? Psychotic symptoms such as auditory or visual hallucinations always warrant further questions. An obvious one: what did the voices say? Was Zach hearing voices telling him he's a girl?
These were questions that demanded attention from his clinicians prior to affirming a new identity. Maybe Zach's gender dysphoria was related to his disordered thinking and hallucinations. Perhaps instead of lip gloss he needed Risperdal (anti-psychotic medication).
I found similar problems in the care of 17-year-old Nicole in Boston. Nicole's life had been chaotic; her father left when she was two, her mother had five other kids with two other men, she was sexually abused by a neighbor, and her family had been homeless for months on several occasions. She had an IQ of 68 and was on three psychiatric medications to treat hallucinations, ADHD, and depression. When she discovered her mother was pregnant, Nicole came out as a boy.
At the time I was consulted, Nicole was in foster care due to charges of physical abuse by her mother.
Nicole wanted testosterone. I was asked by the court to provide my professional opinion regarding "gender-affirming" care, including testosterone, for her.
Having read this far, I trust you can figure out what I said. No testosterone for Nicole.
Zach lives in Utah and Nicole in Massachusetts—both states that ban "conversion therapy" for minors. That means any approach that fails to immediately affirm a child's new identity is prohibited.
I put myself at l risk when I argued that Zach and Nicole should not be affirmed but instead have their long-term mental health issues treated.
At least with those two consultations, my role was to provide my professional opinion. But that wasn't the case with David, a patient in Colorado with whom I worked directly.
One day David told his parents that he is transgender and asked to be called Zoe, "she," and "her." He wanted blockers because the hair sprouting over the corners of his lips and his cracking voice reminded him he's a boy. If only he could take estrogen, he told me, having breasts and wider hips would make him feel confident and secure.
The medical establishment, the DSM-5, and the state of Colorado say the only permissible response is to act as if he was a girl. David must be in the driver's seat—forget about "do no harm." If he picks a different gender identity, name, and pronouns next week, I must use those. I am to instruct parents to tell everyone—family members, school staff, his piano teacher and dentist—to do the same. His mom, dad, and I are all supposed to celebrate what doctors at Johns Hopkins call David's "evolving sense of self."
Celebrating an evolving sense of self sounds fine and dandy. But I happen to know that when David first appeared at a family event in a dress, his mother—a strong feminist and lifelong liberal who supported gay marriage and survived 9/11 and breast cancer—had to flee to a restroom, where she had the first panic attack of her life. I also know puberty blockers might be followed by estrogen and perhaps even orchiectomy—castration. He could end up disfigured and infertile and still not be satisfied with his body.
When David is ready, I must share those dangers with him. I took an oath to prevent harm, no matter what the gender medical establishment or the state of Colorado might say.
For refusing to validate the opposite-sex identities of David and many others, I risk an investigation, but I'll live with that. I'm going to do what's best for my patients.

Babies and kids are constantly growing and changing, and their mouths are no exception! Throughout childhood, kids lose their baby teeth, gain adult teeth, and they begin to take ownership of their own oral health. From brushing to braces to practicing their smiles, oral health is important for every kid at every stage. Read on for tips to help keep your kid smiling for life—we know you love to see your child smile, and so does Natural Smiles Dentistry!
Caring for Kids’ Teeth
Your child’s first teeth—often called “baby teeth”—make their momentous early arrival and continue to serve many purposes until they fall out and are replaced by adult teeth. Baby teeth hold a place in the jaw, paving the way for the adult teeth to grow in properly.  Kids who develop cavities are more likely to develop them later as adults. Don’t dismiss the importance of oral health for kids, even though there’s so much transition in their mouth in these early days.
Basic oral health for kids includes brushing and flossing twice a day. Be sure your child is brushing long enough (and having some fun) by playing a favorite song that’s roughly two minutes long to brush along to. Very young children may still need help and supervision to be sure they’ve thoroughly brushed all their teeth. But don’t wait to teach your kid how to do this on her own—kids are more likely to participate if they feel empowered and valued in the process.
For kids 3 and up, fluoride toothpaste is safe and recommended for the best tooth care and prevention. Kids need good nutrition for growing, healthy bodies—teeth and gums included! Serve meals with lots of vitamins and minerals and make sugary snacks and drinks a rare treat to prevent cavities and tooth decay. And of course, take your child to see the dentist twice a year for checkups and professional cleanings.
Care for Every Occasion
Your kid’s oral healthcare should be just as personalized as all of their interests and activities. Depending on your family’s lifestyle, here are some special ways to celebrate and protect your kid’s teeth:
Consider fun “Tooth Fairy” traditions to celebrate your child’s growth as they lose their baby teeth and gain the adult set.
It’s very important that kids wear mouthguards while playing sports. Losing a tooth (baby or adult) causes a lot of other problems in the mouth, and mouthguards can also help prevent concussions!
If your kid does lose a tooth (playing sports or otherwise), keep it clean and wet in water or milk and call your dentist immediately. Use the emergency answering service after normal business hours.
Older kids and teens start to become aware of their appearance and bad breath. These are extra reasons to encourage healthy habits (like brushing, flossing, and wearing a retainer) to build confidence.
Dentists Love Kids!
Children should visit the dentist twice a year, just like adults. After cleaning your child’s teeth, your dentist may suggest:
Sealants, a strong “sealing” material over the chewing surface of teeth to prevent cavities. (Sealants are cheaper than getting a cavity filled, too.)
Depending on age, mouth size, and state of the wisdom teeth, your dentist might suggest scheduling a minor extraction procedure to have them removed.
Braces, spacers, or other orthodontics might be necessary to help your child’s mouth grow in the healthiest shape.
Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine in Salt Lake City provides professional dental care for kids of all ages. Make an appointment for your child today to invest in millions of smiles to come.

MouthWatch Names Three Winners of its First Annual “Tellie Awards” During GNYDM 2018
Metuchen, NJ – December 11, 2018 – MouthWatch, LLC a leader in innovative teledentistry solutions, digital case presentation tools and intraoral imaging devices, recently announced  three winners of its first annual Teledentistry Innovation Awards affectionately known as the Tellies, during an exclusive invitation-only event hosted during the recent Greater New York Dental Meeting. The purpose of the Tellie Awards is to achieve the following: Highlight the many ways that teledentistry is being implemented across a broad spectrum of dental care including public health, private practice and organizational settings. Recognize individual, forward-thinking dental providers who are realizing the full potential for connected dental care technology and who are reshaping the practice of dentistry and the state of oral health globally. According to MouthWatch Founder and CEO Brant Herman, “We were very pleased to celebrate the first annual Teledentistry Innovation Awards by recognizing three forward-thinking dental professionals who have implemented teledentistry in ways that are revolutionizing the practice of dentistry and the delivery of patient care.” The 2018 Tellies go to….  NYU College of Dentistry / Liz Best, Grants Administrator  NYU’s College of Dentistry is consistently on the leading edge of technology to enhance care delivery. Liz Best recognized the important role teledentistry could play for the dentists of tomorrow and obtained a HRSA grant to fund the implementation of teledentistry technology into the curriculum of dental students at the school. Working with TeleDent™, NYU has incorporated several facets of teledentistry technology into 2nd year dental students’ curriculum. Now, over 350 students each year are exposed to the process of data collection, including intraoral images and videos for use in a teledentistry enabled referral or consultation. This includes learning how to use an intraoral camera for image capture combined with clinical documentation suitable for review by a distant site dentist or specialist. Students then review data from a teledentistry visit and treatment plan remotely. Future uses of teledentistry technology in the NYU College of Dentistry include medical/dental integration with rural clinics as well as putting the TeleDent systems onsite in medical settings across NYU’s medical campus, including pediatrician’s offices, speech pathology and other non-dental provider settings. Off-site outreach programs are also incorporating teledentistry to improve collaboration and communication between providers and the dental school clinics. Miracle Dental / Brittany Kinol, DMD  Miracle Dental, with two offices in the Pittsburgh, PA area, reaches children in a range of settings that are most convenient to the children and their family. By coordinating care delivery with Head Start programs, schools and public insurance carriers, Miracle Dental’s team of mobile hygienists use teledentistry and portable equipment to deliver preventive care to students in the most convenient way possible. In the state of Pennsylvania, the role of Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioner allows Miracle Dental hygienists to see patients in these settings without the need for a dentist being on site. This allows for a very efficient program while maintaining doctor supervision through live video conferencing and store and forward teledentistry. Patients in need of restorative care are connected to Dr. Kinol and her colleagues through the TeleDent™ all-in-one teledentistry platform for visual evaluation of any key clinical information. This remote evaluation and treatment planning make the future restorative visit more efficient and effective. Plus, kids love to see what’s going on in their mouths and learn to understand the importance of home care. Smart Smiles / Staci Stout RDH, BSDH Smart Smiles is a school-based oral health program based in Utah that focuses on dental disease prevention. Their mobile hygiene program provides care to children at school to ensure they have access to oral healthcare. A team of hygienists equipped with portable preventive care equipment and teledentistry technology see children at over 30 schools in the Salt Lake City area, where they provide cleanings, fluoride and all required preventive care services. Intraoral images, video and clinical data are collected during the student’s appointment with the dental hygienist. This information is then securely synced to the cloud and shared with the collaborating dentist. The dentist then reviews the relevant clinical data and creates a treatment plan which can then be shared with the student and their family. By connecting the kids to care, in a setting that’s most convenient to them, Smart Smiles has improved dental health for thousands of children while showing a care delivery model that is sustainable and embraced by schools, students and families. We congratulate and thank this year’s Tellie Awards winners for their commitment to using teledentistry technology to make a tangible difference in improving access to care and the state of oral health in their communities, “ adds Herman. Nominations for next year’s Tellie Awards are currently being accepted online at http://teledentistryinnovationawards.com/. Self-nominations are welcome. How To Choose A Childcare Service Provider For Your Household
Home Based Internet Business Is There Any Other Way
Pure Xylitol is a white crystalline substance that looks and tastes like sugar. This could be very difficult to decipher because the both sexes are really related. https://developingchild.harvard.edu/resources/8-things-remember-child-development/ Are you caring for an aged family member who has Alzheimer's disease?
Selecting a proper dentist for your child might be a very difficult task for many. You have to consider a lot of things before choosing a Salt Lake City Pediatric Dentist. However, you want to provide the best possible care of teeth for your family. Searching for the right dentist is the key factor to your dental health. Oral health is the most crucial factor that should not be exempted. Taking care of teeth is the prime factor to prevent the additional costs of dentists, and oral care. However, in case of any severe problems, visiting a dentist is indispensable.
Oftentimes you can work at the Women's Centre, the GLBTQ space, or the childcare centre on campus. There might be some problem between you your child's carer. You should use only a light spread of toothpaste until your kid is about two years old.

A no kids policy for everyone.Kids are welcome for all guests.Kids only for immediate family member and the bride's and groom's party.Make arrangements with a childcare centre for all the guests' kids during the reception.
You don't want to miss the summer camp rush because you procrastinated! It became impossible for the working woman to care for children and the size of the average family subsequently diminished. They will need your warm smile and a gentle embrace.
Gotta tell you, on Monday, July 6, 1970, my first day at a certain daycare in Detroit, I encountered a situation where I accidentally spilled juice all over myself. I was just four. I'll never forget, that teacher came over, undressed me, and gave me a paddling I will never care for kids. Needless to say, she was done with that daycare! No sooner did she hear about it that she came and got me. I did not return to that nursery school, as they were called in those days.
While you love your child, you do not love the body that he or she gave to you. If it scares you then, chances are, it will scare you at the movies. These dentists know that treating children's teeth is different from adults.
She shares another passion with Hunter. Both admit their favorite player is Phil Mickelson and although you're not supposed to ask for autographs or pictures, she's had her picture taken twice with the three-time Masters champion. The ultimate reward for her was when he suggested they move inside the clubhouse for the picture instead of squinting into the sun outdoors.
Here are some free lesson plan ideas about the sense of hearing. Self-discipline plays a very important role in making your every endeavour successful. I remember that day in late may when I found out I was pregnant.

Obviously the words "adult day care" can be distressing since it sometimes supports the idea of your grown up parent turning into a baby and causing them to be cared for like a baby. Therefore, when you advise your parent that you would like to find a location that they can spend time at throughout the day; do not call it an "adult day care" center. Instantly, mom or dad will think that you just want to "put them away" someplace so that they will not be a bother to you. Of course, you do not want them to think that way.

15 Thanksgiving Activities to Do with Your Family in Northern Utah
We love Turkey Day here at Burg Children’s Dentistry! Who doesn’t love gorging on delicious mashed potatoes, turkey (have you ever had it wrapped in bacon?), creamed corn, and all of the other proper fixin’s that go with the traditional Thanksgiving meal? It sure is one of our favorite holidays!
At Burg we strive to put a smile on every child’s face. Usually, we do that by giving them a really cool superhero cape and helping them to keep their teeth as healthy and pearly white as possible. To combine our passion for Thanksgiving and keeping your child smiling we’ve created a guide to help lead your family to some of Northern Utah’s best activities to do during this holiday season.
Most of these fun activities revolve around the Thanksgiving theme, but there are a few that are just really fun things to do in November.
Things to Do in the Salt Lake City Area
1. Thanksgiving Turkey Trot (West Valley)
Does your family love sports? How about hockey? Cheer on the Utah Outliers as they face off against Wyoming’s Casper Bobcats. The game also doubles as a charitable event. If you donate to their canned food drive, and you’ll receive a free ticket to another Outliers home game.
When: November 17, 2018 @ 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Where: West Valley Acord Ice Center, 5353 3100 S, West Valley City
If your kids aren’t too into hockey just yet, try showing them the classic 90’s Mighty Ducks movies to get them pumped up for the event!
2. International Games Day (West Jordan)
Does your family enjoy playing games? Don’t forget to head to the Salt Lake County Library this November to play Settlers of Catan, Dominion, and a lot of other games.
When: November 17, 2018 @ 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Where: 8030 S 1825 W, West Jordan
3. Thanksgiving Dumplings Class (Sandy)
When you think of Thanksgiving food, you might think of traditional dishes (like those mentioned in the beginning). Chances are that you don’t think of dumplings. Yet, it might be fun to try something new and add a non-traditional side dish to your family’s dinner spread.
Take a cooking class from Ocean Mart. If you have older children who are interested in cooking, take them with you! If you have younger children, it might be a good idea to go to the class and then have an activity at home where you can teach your little ones the culinary craft too.
When: November 20, 2018 @ 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Where: 115 W 9000 S, Sandy
Check out how much fun these children had making dumplings in their home!
youtube
4. Feast With the Beast (Salt Lake City)
Where do all of the pumpkins go after Halloween? A whole bunch of them actually end up getting donated to the Hogle Zoo. Why? Well, some animals actually like to eat them! Bring your family to the zoo this Thanksgiving to find out which ones do.</p.
When: November 22, 2018 @ 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Where: 2600 Sunnyside Ave S, Salt Lake City
youtube
5. Magic Show Series (Salt Lake City)
Do you have a young magician in the family? A child who may be secretly waiting for their letter to Hogwarts? Although that letter may never come (sorry kids!), that doesn’t mean they can’t experience magic outside of the movie theater. Magic shows can be just as exciting!
When: November 23-24, 2018
Where: 3605 S State Street, Salt Lake City
Things to Do in Utah County
6. Luminaria (Lehi)
Hopefully, you’ll forgive us for adding a little something that is Christmas oriented. Luminaria is a spectacular Thanksgiving Point event! Take your family to check out the lights, eat s’mores around fire pits, and play interactive games.
When: November 19-21, 2018 @ 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Where: 3003 North Thanksgiving Way, Lehi
youtube
7. Thanksgiving Story Time (Saratoga Springs)
Do you have a child who absolutely loves books? Would they turn your home into a library if they could? Take your little reader to the Saratoga Springs Library for a Thanksgiving-themed storytime!
When: November 21, 2018 @ 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Where: 1307 N Commerce Dr Suite 200, Saratoga Springs
8. Family Day at Hutchings Museum (Lehi)
The Hutchings Museum in Lehi is putting on a Family Day where there will be a gratitude-themed scavenger hunt. What a great way to have fun and learn good values at the same time!
When: November 21, 2018 @ 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Where: 55 North Center Street, Lehi
9. Pilgrim 5K (Lehi)
We all know that Thanksgiving is not the day to plan on eating healthy. All those carbs and starches! Even the thought of how much butter goes into everything is enough to give you a heart attack, right? However, that doesn’t mean that your family’s healthy lifestyle should go completely out the window on this holiday. No, get up and run! Dress up as pilgrims and participate in Thanksgiving Point’s Pilgrim 5K.
When: November 22, 2018 @ 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM
Where: 3003 North Thanksgiving Way, Lehi
Things to Do in Park City
10. Park City Mountain Opening Day Celebration
Ready to hit the slopes? Bring your family to the resort for a fun-fueled day of activities. There will be hot chocolate, donuts, live music, and a banner breaking ceremony to celebrate the first chair lift of the season going up the mountain.
When: November 21, 2018 @ 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Where: 1345 Lowell Ave, Park City
11. Main Street Electric Parade
Here’s another Christmas-esque activity in November (hey, at least this one is AFTER Thanksgiving!). Come see Santa Claus make his first appearance in Park City as he is welcomed by a parade full of cars decorated with Christmas lights. Santa will be on Main Street walking around from 4-6 PM before the parade.
When: November 24, 2018; @6 PM
Where: Main Street, Park City

When: Fridays November 24, 2018 – April 5, 2019, @ 4:30 PM
Where: 4000 Canyons Resort Dr, Park City, UT 84098

Not in Northern Utah or Don’t Want to Go Outside?
Here are some activities that your family can enjoy from the comforts of your own home!
13. Create a Thankful Tree
On Our Goodwin Journey’s blog there’s a really great artistic activity where a paper tree with hand-shaped leaves is made to show what a family is thankful for. Here is how you can make your own.
Step 1: Get a bunch of construction paper (you’ll want lots of color choices!) and tape.
Step 2: Then, take five sheets of brown paper and tape them on a wall vertically to form a tree trunk.
Step 3: Add branches by cutting out brown paper in rectangular shapes and tape those to the top.
Step 4: For leaves, let your children trace their hands on orange, green, red, and yellow paper and cut them out and then have them write what they’re thankful for on them.
14. Make Turkey Candy Apples
At Burg we know just how much kids love candy and all things sugar! Because of that, we know that your children will really get a kick out of this fun treat. Unlike the traditional candy apples where the apples is covered with hard toffee or a sugar candy coating, this one is really simple. It’s basically candy stuck on an apple with toothpicks to make it look like a turkey. Check out this one that I Love You More Than Carrots made!
Of course, PLEASE make sure your little one brushes their teeth after eating all of that sugary goodness!
15. Play Turkey Bowling
This is a game that can be played with or without snow and is a great backyard game. You set up some bowling pins (some people like to use 2-liter bottles as substitutes) and get a frozen turkey. You’ll definitely want to keep the turkey in it’s plastic wrapping and then let each participant toss the turkey (you don’t really have to roll it like you would a bowling ball) at the pins. Other than that the rules of the game are just like normal bowling.
Tip: If you’d like to go a more artistic route, let your kids decorate the pins like turkeys using construction paper. Look at the many fun options for doing that on Pinterest!
Happy Thanksgiving From Burg
Our dentists and staff hope your family has a great Thanksgiving. We love having your children in our office and seeing their big, happy smiles. Please call us if you need anything and don’t forget to schedule in your December appointments—we have something special planned for those who come see us next month so stay tuned for more details on that!

4. Feast With the Beast (Salt Lake City)

Where: 3605 S State Street, Salt Lake City
Things to Do in Utah County

Have you noticed a difference in your child's breathing recently? Bad breath, sometimes known as halitosis, is exceedingly embarrassing for adults and children. It could be a precursor to something much more severe.
