When was the last time that Bollywood superstar Salman Khan agreed to be a part of a film without hearing a word about the movie’s script or his role? Now before the snarky voice in us ridicules him about doing just that for his career’s spectacular misfires, here’s what we learned from Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi who convinced the Bollywood superstar to dip his feet into South India with ‘Godfather’. The Telugu re-make of the Malayalam blockbuster led by Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj is out in UAE cinemas now.

“Salman bhai is a fantastic human being and a lovely person. And when this suggestion to request him to play the character of Masoom Bhai cropped up, it just took one phone call. Without even listening to any details about the story or the character, he gave a nod,” said Chiranjeevi in an e-mail interview with Gulf News. Apparently, the goodwill that Khan had for this matinee idol played a huge catalyst in Khan making his career’s first South Indian debut.

“From the time the idea was discussed, he was onboard within 20 minutes. Such is his love for me and Charan [Ram Charan, Chiranjeevi’s son] . I am very grateful to him for showing so much affection. While shooting we had great fun too,” said Chiranjeevi.

The gamble where Khan flew in blind paid off. ‘Godfather’ – not to be confused with the iconic Hollywood gangster epic – has raked in millions at the box-office worldwide. Reports claim the movie has swiftly entered the revered Rs1billion club since its release last Friday. 'Godfather' is a political thriller that kicks off when a patriarch of a well-connected family dies suddenly and a vacuum is left behind by the patriarch. The power games form the spine of this film.

Salman Khan plays a vital role in this film. What was your equation with him like and what was your take away from working with him?

Salman bhai [bro in Hindi] is a fantastic human being and a lovely person. And when this suggestion to request him to play the character of Masoom Bhai cropped up, it just took one phone call. Since you have acted in both industries, what are your thoughts on this development?While it is true that South Indian films are drawing audiences in large numbers, it is also true that not every South Indian film is a success. Likewise not every Bollywood film is a flop. There have been several hits in Bollywood in recent times. We must know that it is always the function of good content to bring in viewers and not about which region the film is coming from. We must move beyond the regional tags. And we must acknowledge that from now on there is only Indian Cinema now and not Bollywood, Tollywood or Mollywood.I

On Monday, superstar Salman Khan graced the pre-release event of Kiccha Sudeep starrer Vikrant Rona in Mumbai. Khan is presenting the Hindi version of the multilingual actioner under his banner Salman Khan Films. In his signature candour, the actor spoke about his admiration for the Kannada actor and also commented on the increased number of collaborations between Bollywood and the South film industries.

Talking about it, he said, “This [exchange between Bollywood and South film industries] have always been there. It had stopped for sometime [in between]. I have always been working with people from the South. Earlier I have collaborated with Prakash Raj (in Wanted; 2009) and a lot of South directors and DoPs. I am currently working with Venkatesh Daggubati (in Bhaijaan). I have also worked with Prabhudeva. We have Kamal Haasan who has given big hits in Hindi cinema. So that way, I have always kept the ball rolling." On a related note, a while back, Khan wrapped up the shoot of megastar Chiranjeevi starrer upcoming Telugu film Godfather, which marks his debut in Tollywood.

Shedding light on his association with Sudeep, Khan said that they have shared a long-standing equation and added, “He hosts Bigg Boss (Kannada) and I host Bigg Boss too. He did Huccha (2001) and I did Tere Naam (2003) [both were remakes of the 1999 Tamil film Sethu]. We also had Celebrity Cricket League, in which I owned a team (Mumbai Heroes) and Sudeep (captain of Karnataka Bulldozers) would always beat us. We have also worked in Dabangg 3 (2019) together."

Khan further addressed Bollywood’s dismal streak at the box office, a topic that has taken social media by storm. He stated, “We all are trying. We are all making the best movies that we can. We want our films to reach everyone. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. There’s no formula for a 100 hundred success rate."

Vikrant Rona, which also stars Jacqueline Fernandez, is all set to hit theatres on the 28th of July.

She even revealed how she had auditioned for a role in SLB’s 2005 movie Black but was rejected.

She said:

I was hoping for many years to work with him. When one day, news came up that he is doing a film I was like why isn’t he coming to me. When he did come to me, I was over the moon.

She also recollected as to how her random encounter with SS Rajamouli led to a film role.

I had bumped into Rajamouli sir at an airport and I begged him that whatever part he has for me I will do it. That time he had not cast for the girl yet. He said he was anyway talking about my timelines. So I told him whatever be the timelines, I will make it happen. We made it happen.

The actress, who is currently prepping for her Tollywood debut, is taking Telugu lessons and also revealed that while it’s hard to learn the language, she is picking up fast. Alia also talked about how similar the two directors are, she said that both SLB and Rajamouli are obsessed with their films.

The actress will next be seen in Ayan Mukerji‘s Brahmastra and we can’t wait.
