my favourite thing about sally jackson is how she's stayed such a romantic her whole life despite what she's gone through and nobody talks about it. she sacrificed her years of school so that she could take care of her dying uncle. she was deserted by poseidon after having his kid. she sacrificed the next few decade or so of her life taking care of percy and was repeatedly abused and put down by gabe, all while struggling to become educated, even though gabe disapproved of it. majority of her life was wasted away for the sake of other men. but she put in the work, went to college and became an author who writes romance books. she supports and roots for percy and annabeth's love and is not strict on them at all. she started a new family. she reclaimed the part of her that was a dreamer and was young to pursue her dreams, even at an age where moms are usually expected to retire.

percy is playing a game of matchmaker. whether he realizes it or not.

his bag is thrown over his back, his arm only looped through one strap. sally had told him to carry it correctly or else he could injure himself, but her words sounded like nothing other than a worrying mother doing worrying motherly things so he continued to carry his backpack however he pleased.

you noticed, eyes glancing at the other strap that hangs loosely, but you said nothing. percy started to smile at you.

“are you gonna stay with my mom tonight?”

you take a second, hesitating, staring straight ahead at you for the crosswalk light to change. percy was going to suggest just walking already, there weren’t any cars coming. at least, not cars coming super close. but he knew you wouldn’t want to risk it, at least not while he’s with you.

“why would i?”

the light changes and you take a step, waiting for percy to mirror you before continuing.

when percy speaks, it’s matter of factly, like you’re in the wrong for not considering.

“so she wouldn’t be alone.”

you hum, walking in silence for a few paces before stopping outside of the desert bar you tended to treat yourself and percy to on friday nights, like tonight.

it's ten minutes later when you're continuing on your journey, both of you biting into overpriced and mediocre cinnamon rolls that make up in size for what they lack in quality. you haven't answered percy's question, and he hasn't forgotten it. he finishes off the rest of the tooth rotting treat before bringing it up again.

"so ... are you staying over?"

you sigh, stopping at the next crosswalk and turning to percy with your arms crossed. "maybe. if she asks me to. why do you want me to stay over so badly?"

he shrugs. "because i don't want her to be alone."

he's telling the truth, and he really doesn't understand why you're treating him like he has ulterior motives.

"your mom can take good care of herself."

"but she's more calm when you're over."

"she's calm when you're over."

"exactly and i'm not going to be over tonight," the light changes and you both cross. a car making a right turn honks at you two, and percy thinks he sees you sending your middle finger over before urging percy to walk a little faster with a hand on his backpack.

he continues speaking when you're on the sidewalk once more.

"which is why you should stay over."

he's at the apartment building of his friend now, watching you click the buzzer and telling them that percy has arrived. when the door clicks open, you pull it open for him.

"if your mom wants me to stay over tonight, then i'll stay. i'll be back to get you in the morning. have fun."

the hosts of percy's sleepover end up dropping him off in the morning. he arrives unannounced, bleary eyed, and intensely craving pancakes. he unlocks the door, satisfied to already smell the food he wants the most, and any worries he has buried deep beneath the exhaustion evaporate into the deliciously smelling air whenever he sees you and sally standing in the kitchen, wearing the other's shirt.

unless he's more tired than he realized.

SALLY JACKSON HEADCANONS/THEORY I HAD WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL:

A/N: Hi everyone! I just remembered at 3 a.m. when I was sleeping about this headcanon I had when I was like 15? 16? when I was in high school and the SON OF NEPTUNE had came out at the time. It's a bit wild and I may be misremembering some details cause its been a while but I couldn't hold it in so if you want to give it a read, go ahead!

I just remembered having these headcanons back in the ye old early days of my PJO days and pre-fandom involvement; where we get bits and pieces of Sally Jackson’s backstory and my brain went wild. Someone has probably thought of this or not, but we learn Sally’s parents died in a plane crash around Lake Ontario caused by mysterious circumstances at one point that no one knows about, then we find out that there’s the Roman camp with the fact there are legacies and basically those who have ties with the Roman camp and etc, and we find out about the Lost Eagle that the Fifth cohort lost in Alaska-

So what if Sally Jackson is a legacy herself? And her parents knew they were legacies, one of them at least, and went off to find the Lost Eagle, or at least tracking a lead on it but whatever forces made their plane crash so they wouldn’t be able to. It fits with the common Greek mythological theme, especially the mothers of great heroes are descendents of well known individuals, often somewhere in their family tree line they’re descendents of gods themselves; this makes more sense on why Percy is so powerful as a demigod too. Don’t ask me what god it would be in the family tree, hopefully not Zeus/Jupiter cause that would be messed up or tragic irony right there.

And like Rich Jackson, Sally’s uncle, probably knew but kept the truth from Sally to protect her cause whatever killed her parents may follow after Sally, and the cancer he gotten may have been actually cancer but it could also be induced by a curse. There’s also a stretch that he convinced Sally to drop out of high school so she wouldn’t see any demigods that may have been in her school, which either as a legacy or a mortal who can see through the Mist, may be be too eyecatching of the godly realm. 

If I had more energy like I did back in my early FF.net days, I would’ve crafted a story where Percy and Sally come across someone who knows about their ancestry and legacy and there’s a whole shebang of claiming their rightful place and revenge and etc etc. Or something somewhere along the lines of like Annabeth and Magnus with the Chase family being a family that are all so particular and end up attracting the gods, regardless of their origin.
