Listening to two season 5 era Nygmobblepot playlists I put together that, while very catchy and grounded in a love story I hold dear, are far from joyful. Particularly Ed's which is post-5x11, where he knows he has BIG feelings, but feels clotheslined by his actions in season 3. "That" is not something he can ask for from Oswald, so he's settling for staying in his orbit and keeping the knives out of his back.
i'm getting sentimental over you (tommy dorsey and his orchestra)
you don't know what love is (chet baker)
rehab (amy winehouse)
april fools (rufus wainwright)
don't say nothing bad about my baby (the cookies)
(what can i say) after i say i'm sorry (dinah shore)
telephone (electric light orchestra)
to love somebody (janis joplin)
am i blue (billie holiday)
last dance (donna summer)
they didn't believe me (dinah shore)
i'll call you mine (the zombies)
everything happens to me (chet baker)
i'm not okay (i promise) (robyn adele anderson)
just a gigolo (louis prima)
show me the way to go home (irving king)
keep yourself alive (queen)
the way you say goodnight (magnetic fields)
[x]
And Oswald’s bridges the end of season 4, when he finds Ed’s dead body and goes through the standard Penguin ‘stages of grief’ in early season 5: try to stop feeling and make the world eat shit. All of which lands him squarely in the middle of the Haven crisis and, shortly after, Pena Dura: staggered by senseless death and how much Ed still doesn’t understand.
suffragette city (david bowie)
gatsu (guts' theme) (scooby)
glory and gore (lorde)
last nite (the strokes)
new town (the vitamins)
habanera from carmen (georges bizet)
real men (joe jackson)
house without windows (roy orbison)
stay with me (lorraine ellison)
faust (paul williams)
nightclubbing (david bowie)
have mercy on the criminal (elton john)
the way i do (bishop briggs)
stop the world and let me off (patsy cline)
don't look back in anger (scott bradlee's postmodern jukebox feat. maiya sykes)
sally go round the roses (the jaynettes)
i would die 4 u (prince)
prince charming (adam ant)
[x]
Because. As much as I love a renewed accord awakening new passion... I need them both to do a melancholy conga line of raw suffering until someone forces them to talk it out at knifepoint.

The Christmas I Wanted
Like a lot of kids of my generation, Christmas for me was Leroy Anderson and Burl Ives. Bobby Helms was about as far out as things got at Christmastime. It was decades before I realized what I'd been missing. As rock & roll spun off from R&B, and Boomer kids started buying records in the late 50s, Christmas music got fun again. Sadly, the best of it did not get much airplay. Darlene Love's latter-day success is the tip of a Titanic-sized iceberg.
Marvin Phillips made a bunch of records as Marvin & Johnny, but "Johnny" was a rotating cast of singers. In 1958, the "Johnny" was Emory Perry on this R&B/rock n roll snow stroll.
youtube
Non-group The Jaynetts released this holiday sendup of their own hit "Sally Go 'Round The Roses" in 1964 that was as ambiguous and fun as the original.
youtube
Jaymes Fenda and the Vulcans deliver the Christmas song the Beatles forgot to make (1964).
youtube
Before they became the Valiants, the Sabers recorded one single, in 1955, the B-side of which was "Cool Cool Christmas." It was covered in 1958 by another one-off group calling themselves Bobbie & Boobie. Dunno who Boobie was, but Bobbie was almost certainly Bobby Nunn, who'd helped bring Christmas blues into the postwar boom.
youtube
I can't track down firm details for this one, but it's a killer.
youtube
Here's what could have topped the Xmas charts before and after 1960, if uptight A&R guys hadn't smashed our Christmas balls.

Another favorite video of the stunning group Pentangle. From 1970, this includes several amazing songs including "Sally Go Round The Roses", and "Light Flight".
I've seen this one on the tubes before but it was just released on the official channel 2 weeks ago.

Hello, hi, MORE recently uploaded Fanny concerts!!! This concert is from 1974 and featured a different lineup from the classic lineup - for this concert, it's: Jean Millington (bass and vocals), Patti Quatro (lead/rhythm guitar and vocals), Nickey Barclay (piano, keyboard, and vocals), and Cam Davis (drums, maybe also vocals?).
I've gotta say, even though Fanny's classic lineup is my all-time favorite, this lineup (even with Cam Davis on drums rather than Brie Howard, who I believe was Fanny's final drummer before the band broke up and also played on Rock and Roll Survivors) did not disappoint, and I have to admit that this live performance made me actually like these songs from Rock and Roll Survivors that I never cared for before. I only wish they'd played "Sally Go 'Round the Roses" because they do that song SO WELL (although in hindsight, perhaps they didn't because Brie sang lead vocals on that song...but to be honest, I sometimes get Jean and Brie's voices mixed up, so I think Jean could've done it just as well since Brie was apparently not there to sing/play it and no offense to Cam who is a fine drummer, but she sure isn't Alice de Buhr and she isn't Brie Howard-Darling, either).
#Fanny band#classic rock#video#music#Jean Millington#Patti Quatro#Nickey Barclay#Cam Davis#CHECK OUT JEAN'S FUCKIN' BASS SOLO ON ''Get Out of the Jungle'' OH MY GOD :'D Jean needed to play more bass solos god damn#also Nickey's vocals sound SO DAMN GOOD HERE 😭 I wish she hadn't left Fanny 😭#also I'm pretty sure this is my first time seeing anything live from that lineup so this was BADAAAAAAAAAAAASS#Youtube

Pentangle - Sally Go Round The Roses (1969)

9/30/23: It was 50 years ago today, September 30th, 1973, Tim Buckley would release his eighth album Sefronia. This record is a bit of a disappointment following his last two minor masterpieces, Starsailor and Greetings from L.A.. Outside of two songs, this record is mostly Adult Contemporary Tim Buckley, which really shouldn't go together--and it kinda doesn't. Several of these songs could have been sung by the likes of Neil Diamond. Stick with the two and that's all you'll need: 'Stone In Love' may be one of Buckley's best songs, actually, super slinky, almost funky, sultry... really dig it; and Buckley's cover of 'Sally Go Round the Roses' is pretty sweet too as it is relatively slow (but in a good way) but then has out-of-nowhere funky breakdown that almost doesn't belong in the song, but I'm glad it's there. That's it. Since I won't get to the next record in 1974, the slightly superior Look at the Fool, I just wanted to sadly note that Buckley would die from a drug overdose in 1975; even sadder, his musician son Jeff Buckley (who only met his father once) would also die an accidental death twenty-two years later from drowning in a river (not from drugs, purely accidental). Puts a sort of eerie Badfinger-like curse over the proceedings here. RIP father and son.
