The U.S., Norwegian and British governments have joined forces with a group of big companies to cut greenhouse gas emissions by rewarding countries that put a stop to the destruction of tropical forests.
By tapping into private investors, the plan would demonstrate the efforts by world governments to marshal private money in the costly fight against climate change.
The plan so far includes commitments from household names such as Amazon, Airbnb, Bayer, Boston Consulting Group, GlaxoSmithKline, McKinsey, Nestlé, Salesforce and Unilever. Those nine big companies would work with the United States, Norway and Britain to invest at least $1 billion in the plan before year end and substantially more in following years.
“We can’t succeed in the fight against climate change if we don’t protect tropical forests,” said Nathaniel Keohane, senior vice president at the Environmental Defense Fund, noting more than 25 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions would be avoided if existing forests were protected.
The new initiative, called Lowering Emissions by Accelerating Forest finance Coalition, or LEAF, has better chances of success and compliance than with past anti-deforestation efforts because the countries with forests must take on the responsibility for protecting them, according to Eron Bloomgarden, executive director of Emergent Forest Finance Accelerator, a nonprofit intermediary acting to bring together countries with tropical forests and the international private sector.
Under the agreements, the corporations would pay an amount equal to $10 a ton for avoided carbon dioxide emissions. The countries or large states with the forests would be paid only after showing a five-year record of success compared with historical five-year benchmarks. Those governments would be in charge of enforcing the rules in their jurisdictions.
The companies say they will not earn any return on their investments and are sinking money into the forestry projects out of concern about climate change, as well as pressure from consumers and shareholders. To participate in the program, they must have already pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or sooner.

This gap is bad for business. “The world’s most digitally mature companies lead all other companies in value creation. They also have proved much more resilient during the crisis,” research by the Boston Consulting Group found.
Forbes underscores the need for leaders to become digitally savvy: “Executives are not above or insulated from personal digital transformation. And they can’t lead digital value creation in the new world unless they are versed and competent in doing so. More so, they can’t lead or expect managers to lead teams in a hybrid world if they’re inexperienced. Empathetic leadership starts with understanding what it takes to engage employees and inspire them to excel in this new world and adapting how someone leads accordingly,” Best-Selling Author and Salesforce Global Innovation Evangelist Brian Solis wrote.
Despite the urgent need for digital skills among leaders, Solis cites research from MIT’s Sloan School of Management that found that “only 23% of CEOs are considered digitally savvy. And just 7% of large companies currently employ digitally savvy executive teams.”

Business management in times of coronavirus and in post-pandemic days
After a year of pandemic, one of the irrefutable lessons left by the crisis is the urgent need for the business fabric to adapt its structures and adjust its operations to a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment (VUCA). Without this accommodation it will be practically impossible to survive the present and think, with certain guarantees, about the future.
Covid-19 has changed the rules of the game, disrupted habits and altered priorities, short-circuiting those more traditional business management models. An unexpected emergency in the form of a global virus has precipitated dire consequences for economic activity, causing deep material scars and intangible wounds in the business strategy of most organizations around the world.
Faced with this still unfinished derivative, boards of directors and management teams have had to prioritize the now, facing the financial, operational and organizational challenges brought about by the pandemic. Remodel their professional routines, restructure and innovate,to offer immediate response to a dynamic demand, in continuous evolution. Adapt to the changing needs of all the parties involved (workers, suppliers, customers, shareholders...) and establish, with little room for manoeuvre and error, new ways to survive and grow. All this with the inalienable objective of managing in the best possible way the economic and human shock caused by this systemic crisis.
Challenge and window of opportunity At first, confinement and social distancing, among other factors, forced a large number of companies to change the way they work, forcing them to reinvent themselves unmitigatedly.

Thus, the generalization of the use of ICT in corporate processes has accelerated significantly to respond to labor requirements, to such an extent that digitalization, in addition to allowing a modernization of operations, results in great benefits for companies, helping them to reduce costs, to innovate (better and faster), preparing them for hypothetical shocks to come and underpinning their resilience.
A couple of notes can help to have a clearer vision of the recent advances in digitalization undertaken by companies in our country. According to data from a study by the multinational Salesforce, about 70% of executives of large corporations claim to have implemented some kind of technological transformation in days of pandemic. On the other hand, the report 'Digital Economy in Spain' by Adigital and Boston Consulting Group points out that, prior to the outbreak of the crisis, the digital economy hovered around 19% of the national GDP in 2019, a figure that places us above the average of most countries in the world. An invitation, without a doubt, to continue working in this direction.

Citcon USA LLC is looking to connect U.S. e-commerce merchants with an array of digital wallets used by consumers in Latin America and Southeast Asia. “U.S. e-commerce merchants have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to activate these consumers,” Huang, a former Visa Inc. executive, says in the release. “Use of local payment methods is a proven means to reduce cart abandonment for cross-border e-commerce.”
OxxO, Mercado Pago, PicPay, KakaoPay, Jkopay, GCash, Dana, and Alipay HK are among wallets included in the new service. All told, the integration will enable more than 300 million active users. Besides mobile wallets, the service supports buy now, pay later, credit and debit cards, voucher payments, and bank transfers. It also includes plug-ins for e-commerce platforms like Shopify, Salesforce Commerce Platform, and SAP Hybris.
The new integration comes at a time when 6-year-old company’s merchant base has grown to include a number of brands inclined to sell overseas as well as in the United States. Clients include L’Oreal, Hermes, Texas Instruments, Nordstrom, Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts, Revolve, Tumi, Samsonite, Blue Nile.
It also comes as e-commerce is booming and merchants are looking to capture more of that spend. “Cross-border commerce continues to increase, and while inhibited somewhat by  the Covid-19 pandemic, growth in global cross-border commerce will expand and accelerate in the years to come,” says Thad Peterson, a senior analyst at Aite Group, a Boston-based consultancy, in an email message. “Without an offering like Citcon’s or from other multi-tender providers, it’s very difficult for merchants to offer their customers the choices that they prefer.”
The Citcon integration represents a potentially significant expansion of the company’s capabilities. It started out in 2015 with technology that allows U.S. merchants in areas favored by Chinese tourists to accept Alipay and WeChat Pay, the two most popular mobile wallets in China. Its expansion into e-commerce came last summer with its launch of the plug-ins, which it estimated at the time would bring access to more than 2 billion consumers in more than 110 countries.
