AITA for asking my childhood crush to revive her dad's old theatre troupe or pay me back another way?

I (30m) recently bumped into my crush (24f) unexpectedly and under less than ideal circumstances. Her father used to direct at a theatre company but left without saying why a few years ago and the quality of the performances declined, leaving the company to go bankrupt. Since I have the financial means, I have been donating to the current manager in hopes of reviving the company, but recently realised it was futile. I was about to start demolition when she asked me to stop, saying she would find new actors and revive the company herself. Flustered, I agreed (with some conditions) as I really don't have the means to continue funding a wasted effort, but am reluctant to see the theatre go because it holds a lot of sentimental value to me and I want to give her the benefit of the doubt. However, I feel I might have been too forward with my proposal and angered a teenage boy she had recruited. I do feel like I should receive some sort of compensation for all these years of support I've given, especially since I grew up poor and understand the value of money and am also devastated that something that once inspired me as a child is potentially going to be gone for good. AITA?

“Bon. Are you worried I’ll abandon you once the baby comes?”

The old man is as tactful as ever – that is to say, not at all. Azami lets out an annoyed sigh. He’s tempted to respond with some snarky remark like it really wouldn’t be abandonment, it’d just be you finally leaving me alone, Kusosakyo. He’s tempted to brush him off and change the subject. He’s tempted to ignore the statement all together.

He’s tempted to be a brat about it.

But he’s seventeen – on his way to becoming a “fine young man”, or something like that. He really ought to face this like an adult.

“A little bit, yeah,” he says. “But it’s really not a big deal.”

And that’s the truth – he really is just a little bit worried about this whole thing. He can’t blame Sakyo for blowing this out of proportion, though. He had a right to be concerned, since Azami stormed out of the room in fury once Sakyo and Izumi told him she was pregnant.

He knew that he reacted poorly to the news, but what else was he supposed to do? Sakyo had just admitted to having… relations�� outside of marriage! That was the biggest concern! At the very least he would be marrying her before the child was born, but it still wasn’t right.

Ugh. Now he had that image in his head again. He really did not want to think about Sakyo and… that… any longer than he had to. So he made his peace with it, and he had decided to no longer be upset about it. Anything to keep that topic off his mind.

So putting the fact the child was conceived out of wedlock aside… he was happy for them. They both seemed pretty happy about the whole thing, and he was sure having a baby was going to make the Mankai Company a hell of a lot more lively. It was something to look forward to.

And yeah, a part of him dreaded how this could change his relationship with Sakyo. But that was stupid. He was going to have a goddamned baby to look after soon enough – of course things were going to change. That’s just how life worked.

“Tch. I’ll decide if it’s a big deal or not,” Sakyo says. Ugh, why did Azami think this was going to be easy? “Come, sit with me.”

Azami sighs and rolls his eyes, but he does as he’s told, sitting down on the sofa next to Sakyo.

“I know that I’m not the best at talking about this sort of stuff,” he says. His expression is infuriatingly vague behind those glasses of his – he thinks there’s a hint of sadness in his eyes, but he really can’t be sure. “But for a while now, I’ve thought of you as a son.”

Huh.

That probably should have hit him harder. Turned his world upside down. But it really didn’t – him admitting it was a comfort more than it was a shock. He supposes that he already knew, deep down. He just didn’t want to admit it.

(for a while now, he’s thought of Sakyo as a father.)

“I know I haven’t always been the best guardian, but I - I did try. You will – you will always matter a great deal to me.” It’s almost funny, seeing Sakyo choke out his emotions like this. Yeah, funny. The tears that are welling up in Azami’s eyes are from laughter, he’s sure of it. Hysterical. “If you’d feel up for it – you’re more than welcome to call this kid your little sibling.”

Oh. Now isn’t that something to think about? A chubby little baby with the Director’s smile and Sakyo’s eyes, held softly in his own arms. His little sibling.

When he starts to cry, he allows himself to do so. Even if it’s totally going to ruin his eyeliner. Crying over a new baby sibling is acceptable – far more so then crying over Sakyo.

“Yeah, I’d like that,” Azami sniffles out. “That… that means a lot to me.”

Sakyo smiles slightly. “I’m glad to hear it. I’m not going to replace your spot in my family with this child, bon. I’m just adding another member. You didn’t think you could escape Kusosakyo that easily, did you?”

Azami snorts. “If only I could be so lucky.”

But really, he knows the truth. He is pretty damn lucky, isn’t he?

Well, he better work on becoming that “fine young man” everybody thinks he is. He’ll have to set a good example as a big brother, after all.

and he can't wait to see her every morning intruding into the kitchen with an energetic greeting, and he anticipates every evening when they do the paperwork, so he can chat with her in the meantime about trivial things.

and he loves all those moments when he feels loved by her, because spending life with her on a daily basis is the biggest miracle that could've happened in his life.

Probably gonna fail a class so here are random headcanons for Izumi Tachibana from A3!

(It’s pretty long IMO and not proofread, sorry)

(I also am not caught up with the JP main story past Act 10 so sorry if anything contradicts sth that happens later)

CW: it gets kinda depressing near the end, my mood kinda seeped in 😓; mostly backstory stuff

——

- my girl is bi (more so bc I want a chance)

- her mom was always a stickler for a clean house so she’s super serious about making sure everyone does their chores, even more than Sakyo

- this one is more about Yukio and her mother but that man’s taste is women is definitely serious women in charge (they say you tend to fall for someone similar to your parents *winkwonk* SakyoIzu being the gender bent ver *winkwonk*

- Women on top tho, the men are simps (Yukio has to call at least once a week or else)

- On that note, her mom definitely holds grudges by the way she doesn’t even want Yukio to be mentioned in her household; Izumi holds mini-grudges too but they eventually fade with time bc she’s forgetful and just really nice

- not one to scream at a person when she’s angry, just raises her voice and speaks in a firm tone (she’s really good at choosing the right words though so it’s kinda worse to get her mad bc she’s usually so tolerant and her words hit deep)

- always speaks from the heart so this skill not transfer to acting 😭

- when her dad left so suddenly, she tried watching plays to cope but then started crying in the middle of the performance bc she thought of what her dad would think of a specific scene bc they used to do daddy-daughter play trips

- briefly tried to take up a different artistic hobby instead of theatre but when that failed, she just threw herself into her studies

- average student but she can get higher scores if she really tries

- scores into a pretty good college but a friend encourages her to go to a decent college that at least has a good arts program bc they’re worried Izumi is gonna throw away her life’s passion

- although she had that horrible experience where the theatre head told her she has no acting talent, at least being able to help create plays with backstage work rekindles her love of theatre and gives her an even greater appreciation for behind the scenes positions

- she works her way up the back stage ladder, trying out all sorts of different jobs to get a feel for each of them and eventually gets to an assistant director position

- and she’s absolutely in love with it (my girl is a career woman through and through)

- she gets why her father loved it so much although he was a great actor himself

- so thankful to the friend who encouraged her to go to that college, they’re still in contact (long distance bc she’s still at their home town) and they text and do late night calls often (they’re platonic soulmates dw)

- She was decently popular before daddy issues happened and lost a lot of the fair weather friends and only has a few close ones she’s made and kept over the years; she’s making more connections via theatre nowadays bc MANKAI keeps her so busy (it’s a crime that Liber doesn’t even give Izumi just one friend outside of her relation with MANKAI)

- Although MANKAI and her friend have never met, they refer to each other by nicknames at this point bc of how often Izumi catches them up on what the other is doing

- I know for a fact this girl is a praiser, she’s just so proud about them like a mother (especially when it comes to MANKAI)

- Takes almost no credit for them however, my girl has some insecurity issues being around such immensely talented people 😢

- She’s very talented in managerial aspects but she only found out after years of no talent in various arts

- She’s not one to tell people about her troubles (she knows she should) but people who know her well can tell when she needs a pick me up

- and one last happy one bc wow it got depressing and long: at least every few months, she schedules a weekend off and goes back to her hometown to spend time with her mother, after realizing that she should cherish more the family she has close by after moving into the MANKAI dorm and being reminded of family by the boys (both mother and daughter look forward to this event every time) (what do they do? Just relax and chat over Japanese snacks while her mother gives Izumi some tips on how to better run the dorm) (If you think Izumi is a praiser, her mother is worse, 1000% yaps about her wonderful daughter all the time to her friends behind Izumi’s back)

Sakyo: You’ll be going to help a troupe in the neighboring town later, won’t you, Director-san?

Izumi: Yes, their actual performance is coming up, so they asked for my help again.

Sakyo: In that case, be careful of what time you come back home. If you’re gonna be late like last time, give me a call.

Izumi: You don’t need to worry so much., I’ll be fine. I’m a grown woman, you know!

Izumi: You’re such a worrywart, Sakyo-san!

Sakyo: Am I, now… Who was it again that had a brush with the law without so much as a single message?

Izumi: Ahaha… That did happen. I’m sorry...

I tried the A3! Ship chart except my brain is always on overdrive so I don't know what's going on. Everything here is under aspec lens so nothing is romantic unless stated otherwise.

Detailed explanation under the cut.

This basically means that they have a label on their relationship but they're alterous. I think BanTsumu are boyfriends and possibly married in the future. To be honest, I don't really care what their labels is but I think they're the type to put a name on their relationship.

Established:

BanTsumu is my ultimate OTP, I just like the peaceful vibes they give. Tsumugi becomes a lot more playful when he's around Banri and Banri is uncharacteristically always tied around Tsumu's little finger. They're polar opposites but they find comfort in each other like how Banri helped calm Tsumugi down with a cup of coffee when he was nervous and how Tsumugi makes Banri feel safe enough to release his worries. As an aspec mf their dynamic feeds my soul!

Romantic:

1. SakyoIzu: they're not really my top choice but if I'm gonna ship them, I think they would be romantic.

2. TaiYuki: Taichi definitely has the fattest crush on Yuki and I think once he realizes it, he's gonna want something more out of it.

3. TsumuHaru: Tsumugi and Haruto just scratch an itch in my head😔 I think they're the type of couple who tease each other endlessly, act like they're done with each other's antics, and they constantly bicker but at the end of the day, they understand each other most.

OTP:

1. ChikaIzu: MY ALTEROUS BELLS 🫶 RING SO HARD FOR THESE TWO. They are family and they would do anything for each other. They're not shy to reach out when the other needs help, they make promises with each other, they have a playful dynamic, they bond with each other even in the most mundane settings... MY BRAIN JUST HURTS WHEN I THINK OF THEM because I want what they have!!!

2. AzuTasu: Tasuku is just so down bad for Azuma, man. LIKE WHAT EVEN IS THE ENTIRETY OF NOCTURNALITY? Not only that, Tasuku is DENSE but for some reason, he's always one step ahead of comforting Azuma. Also, why does he call everyone by their last name EXCEPT AZUMA 😭 LIKE WHAT THE HELL? Don't even get me started with Azuma's semi playful flirting and Tasuku just responds in the most sincere way THEN AZU GETS ALL FLUSTERED? Whenever these two interact, I just want someone to punch me.

3. HisoIta: I saw this ship one day, thought about it for 10 minutes, and hopped in the ship. I love the idea of spoiler x spoiled. Itaru is SO good at spoiling people and Hisoka is like a cat that needs to be spoiled rotten. Hisoka is also the type of person who will let you do your thing but he'll try to help you in his own terms when he feels like you need help. I like that cause I think Itaru likes his own space and pace so Hisoka is perfect for that!!

4. ME AND KASUMI : look, I know her wife died and I'm sorry but like... If the triplets need a stepmom just hook me up.

1. JuTen: I just love the mutual respect they have for each other 🛐

2. HisoSaku: TWO ANGELS TOGETHER IS NEVER THE WRONG MOVE!!! Hisoka has this vibe that he's always carrying something heavy and I think whenever he's around Sakuya, he relaxes and he likes watching over how pure Sakuya is about everything. I think if Sakuya asks Hisoka for a favor, he would skip his sleep just to fulfill it.

3. BanSaku: THESE TWO JUST.... *SQUISH* I have no words except AHHHHHHH KEEP LOOKING OUT FOR EACH OTHER!!!

4. TenSaku: Tenma's crush on Sakuya in Act 1 never died on me. Sakuya's acting was acknowledged to not be the best at that time but he just saw how pure and passionate Sakuya is for acting so he felt inspired. HE TALKED TO HIM TO RESPECTFULLY TOO LIKE 🙉🙉 Y'all make me crazy.

5. CitoTsuzu: Citron please keep looking after our playwright boy. He may complain all the time but he looks up to you so much and I know you adore him for all he is.

1. Fuyupoly: Fuyu is so unserious 💀 I know they're supposed to be the mature group but I swear I was never fully sold on that idea. I think they'd all live together with their shenanigans until they die.

2. CitoIzuChika: This is kinda complicated but like Citron and Izumi are bros, super tight bros, they always go out together and hang out— everyone is convinced they are together. Chikage and Izumi are the same but their dynamic is more serious than the crackhead energy CitoIzu gives. ChikaTasu - Tasu is easy to mess with, but also they're weirdly similar attitude and interest wise

ItaTasu - they're just trying to drag each other into their hobbies

All together they'd be ridiculous, chaotic and give most of the other members a headache. They also accidentally become the collective secondary parental unit of Mankai (to be consulted if SakyoIzu aren't available) (just because spring automatically turns to chikaita, and natsu automatically turn to tasutsumu and all four of them have a specific dynamic with the Aki kids) (please appreciate my feral poly couple agenda here I think they would be absolutely insufferable in wildly different ways)
