The myth of Sae Itoshi is that he is uncaring. His blank face, coveted by brands for being unreadable, is plastered on billboards and shrunk down into magazine ads, the 2 dimensions unable to capture the tempest of emotions that passes through his turquoise eyes. Sae is in fact readable; predictable, transparent--sea foam that washes back up on the same shores it’s always known. You look at Itoshi Sae and you know your answer before the inevitable part of his lips, so you’re never surprised. Not anymore.

Sae has no pleasure in this. He hates being seen, wishes he could close the curtains to you again, but it’s too late.

So he says the first thing that comes to mind. Sometimes it’s witty. Other times is a lame excuse for lashing banter, but you laugh anyways. A little amused snort and the roll of your eyes he knows well. So maybe you’re just as see through as him.

You ask him hard questions. Questions that have surface level, preprogrammed answers, the first thing he regurgitates to sate everyone else. But you’re not everyone else. Never have been.

“Do you miss home?” Yes. More than anything Sae misses home. He doesn’t miss Japan, doesn’t miss Kamakura or his street-- he misses the capsule of when he lived there, floating in his memory before he left for Spain the very first time. That home, those people are gone and lost to time and Sae would smash the universe to pieces to get back there. (And yes, Sae thinks, even with you in it.)

But that’s impossible. And insane. Yet when he simply says yes, you tilt your chin down and make a little shoving gesture with your outstretched hand, like you’re opening the floor for him. (He likes that about you. You give him space, like now, or when you open your legs to let him stand between them, or letting the room air out between words so he can gather his thoughts,)

“Have you ever seen Chibi Maruko-Chan?” He relishes the blank look on your face. You correct your confusion quickly, snapping your head back at the correct axis, then saying “No I haven’t,” very softly, like your voice will shatter the reticent bubble he’s created. “What’s it about?”

Sae shrugs. “It’s just about this girl who lives in Shizuoka City. It’s autobiographical, the Momoko Sakura in the show is probably the author. And she just like,” Sae doesn’t know why he’s at a loss for words. Why there’s an empty space in his chest where the words should be.

And then there’s not: that empty space around him floods as your hand idly slides into his open palm, fingers lacing and thumb rubbing a soothing stripe under the second knuckle of his thumb. You don’t look away for a second, something syrupy honey sweet reflecting in your eyes as he finds the words he rarely doesn’t have.

“She has little mundane adventures. Gets into trouble. has a sibling, and of course everything resets. Nothings ever wrong permanently in an episodic slice of life.”

“Isn’t that the dream,” you remark off handedly, and it strikes Sae that for all the time you’ve been together he doesn’t think you’ve ever gone home. Which admittedly isn’t much, but it feels significant. Feels like you know, somehow, about the time bubble he cast on his home, how he can only ever go to the home he wants to in his dreams, how those locations of home are warped from time and memory and no matter how many times he goes "home," he will never be back there.

It’s in your eyes, the same ones squinting with a smile. “Sounds cute,” you say, and nothing more. Your body shifts, leaning down and finally taking that space for yourself, slotting against Sae’s side, where you ought to be.

Sae’s arm snakes around you without unlacing your fingers. He presses your side flush against his. A solid reminder that he can't crush space and time, but he can have something. Something he's proud to call home. “It is cute. It’s old, probably as old as I am.”

“Wow, so ancient,” you say, and Sae kisses the top of your head. It smells like you put perfume in your hair, not the one he buys you, but the one he smelled the first time he met you. He likes that one better anyways.

The conversation drifts, because you’re some sort of encyclopedia and you start filling the space with your voice he never tires of. And perhaps because you were born of the same seafoam, or because he just knows you by now, Sae is unsurprised when a few weeks later, you serve him tea in a Chibi Maruko-chan mug. Unsurprised, but still filled with some tumultuous mixture of yearning and gratitude. Something akin to a smile wobbles across his lower lip, and he sniffs when he asks

“Can I keep this?”

“It’s yours, baby.”

Sae's favorite show is Chibi Maruko-Chan, an autobiographical slice of anime about a young girl who lives in Shizuoka. I think it’s an odd fact about someone who hates their home country so much lol, but then I thought about this.

This is also inspired by this song, namely the lyric “I see you, my same eyes,” and how I think Sae will need to be with someone who feels the same way he does.

title: looking on tempests, never shaken (ao3) pairing: togame jo/sakura haruka summary: All his life, people he was supposed to rely on have abandoned him. He’s been left behind so many times that he started to learn how to leave before anybody else got the chance to do the same to him. But… But Togame is nothing like them. Am I…going to be abandoned again?

"I can't deal with you right now, Sakura."

Sakura was no stranger to conflict. For years he had faced countless confrontations, settling matters with his own fists. Just recently, he had been learning to resolve issues in his class with the minimal use of physical force. But no matter how many thugs he had beaten up, or how many discourse Nirei and Suo helped him mediate, nobody could have prepared him for this specific argument with his own boyfriend.

Sure, they've had small disagreements before, but Togame's always been the first one to give way. Ever since knowing Togame, Sakura discovered just how one's patience could be so magnanimous. He must have thought it would stretch out until the ends of eternity, but as Togame closes the apartment's door with the barest of thuds — he never slams things, not even when he's angry — Sakura thinks it's at the brink of breaking.

Still, the sharp snap of the latch itches at a long-buried memory, and Sakura's clenched fist loosens, his fingers trembling. Pride keeps him frozen in place, though, even when half of him is just about ready to run after Togame's retreating footsteps. Only when he couldn’t hear a trace of those wooden geta that Sakura releases the breath he didn’t realize he has been holding.

When it comes to them, there’s very little that gets on Togame’s nerves. He had adapted to Sakura’s habits and settled into Sakura’s life, as naturally as the gentle laps of the morning sea roll onto the shore. Whenever an issue comes up, Togame would let him say his piece, calmly explain his own perspective, and not let the night pass without the two of them meeting at a compromise. Whenever possible, it’s Togame who yields, assuring Sakura that it doesn’t matter that much to be argued upon.

But there’s one thing Togame feels very strongly about: Sakura undervaluing himself.

Yes, he’s confident in his own abilities, he has a clear goal he wants to achieve, but most times he still does not feel worthy of everything good that is surrounding him. Especially Togame. It’s something Sakura has been trying to unlearn for a while now, and in all his patience, Togame’s helping him with it, too.

But a recent gathering put him back in that tight spot, where it felt like he was drowning again, being pulled away from Togame. He should’ve learned his lesson by now, but the scars—both old and new—still lingered. Togame has been nothing but faithful, and he never gave Sakura any reason to be jealous of anybody. But there are periods of Togame’s life where Sakura hasn’t made a mark, yet other people had. Not that he’s trying to claim Togame all for his own, but when he sees those people (one, in fact) connecting with Togame in a way he himself can’t, sharing a laugh over a memory where Sakura had not existed yet, knowing each other’s thoughts without words, Sakura’s brain starts making him think of the worst.

Togame doesn’t need me at all.

Togame’s better off with him.

Maybe someone else deserves you better, Togame, not me.

That last bit he had said out loud just tonight, which resulted to this situation.

Togame’s been pissed before, but he had never said he couldn’t deal with Sakura anymore.

What should I do? What should I do? What should I—

His hands frantically fished out the phone in his pocket, thumbs swiftly opening his group chat with Nirei and Suo and typing out a call for help. If there’s anyone else who could know how to solve his problems, it should be his closest friends, right? They said I can always lean on them. Friends ask for advice, right? His thumb hovered over the send button.

But doubt crept in. It’s my fault. Why should I drag them into this? This wasn’t a town crisis. This was his relationship, his mess.

I can’t deal with you right now. The words echoed in his head, hauntingly clear, but this time, it wasn’t only Togame’s voice but a cacophony of people he’d rather not recall — people who never cared in the first place, who judged him without even knowing him, who spoke his name like it was a curse. They can all scram to hell.

This shouldn’t be new. All his life, people he was supposed to rely on have abandoned him. He’s been left behind so many times that he started to learn how to leave before anybody else got the chance to do the same to him. But…

But Togame is nothing like them.

Am I…going to be abandoned again?

Togame’s not just anybody. Sakura doesn’t want to lose him, and he does not want Togame to leave him behind. Even if Togame does deserve better, he wants to keep this man by his side and find a way to deserve him.

Not so long ago, Togame told him with a wry smile, You’re really selfish, you know that?

Damn right, he’s selfish.

So, what the hell is he giving up his man to others for? What is he still doing here? With a sudden bout of clarity, Sakura sprints outside and chases after Togame.

Sakura finally finds Togame at the park not far from the apartment, sitting hunched under one of the handful of streetlamps surrounding the area, an empty ramune bottle in his hand.

He hasn’t left yet. Relief floods Sakura, I can still fix this.

Togame raises his head then, seemingly sensing his presence, and their gazes meet in the cold evening air. With a deep breath, Sakura takes the first step to close the distance between them.

Not so long ago, he had said that even if facing someone whom he owes his life to, he will never bend his will. But at that time, he knew he was in the right. Should he still think the same when he’s the one who was in the wrong this time?

Just as Togame always does, he stands up from his spot — the clink of the dropped ramune bottle rolling away fills the silence in the air along with their footsteps — and meets Sakura halfway,

“Sakura—”

“Wait, let me talk first.”

Sakura avoids his gaze, keeping his eyes on the ground at the space between Togame’s feet. He’d been rehearsing the words in his mind since he left the apartment, he should be able to spit it out. It’s just that, he didn’t account for the edges of his eyes feeling hot. Out of habit, his hand reaches out and grabs the hem of Togame’s samue.

“I’m sorry. I’m stubborn…I’m hard-headed…And even when everybody tells me…even when you tell me that I’m more than enough, I can’t help but think that…that you will be better off without me.” Sakura feels his voice faltering at this point. He clutches the hem of Togame’s samue even tighter, as if anchoring himself. “I…I don’t know if I can promise that it won’t happen again… but I swear, I’m learning. With you, I’m learning. So, Togame,…can you not leave?”

He finally finds it in him to look up and meet Togame’s astonished green eyes, remaining to be a pool of depth and calmness for his troubled mind. For some reason, Sakura already knows how the night would end. Still, he needs to hear it from Togame’s own lips.

“Even if I say something stupid again, just punch some sense to me. But don’t leave me. Please.”

“Sakura, I’m not—”

Togame doesn’t finish the sentence, because he’s already gathering Sakura in his arms, knocking the wind out of Sakura’s lungs, holding tight as if the other boy would float away otherwise. Returning the hug comes automatically, and Sakura is just about to fall on his knees if it isn’t for Togame’s arms holding him up.

“I’m sorry, Sakura. I just needed to cool my head off, but I said the wrong words back there, haven’t I?”

Sakura shakes his head against Togame’s chest, not trusting himself to speak anymore. His throat felt choked up, he might actually let out a sob if he says even just one word. Togame keeps holding him, rubbing circles on his back. He must have known that Sakura’s at the brink of crying, too.

“No, I really was wrong. We’re supposed to deal with things together. I shouldn’t have left like that, Sakura. I guess I just…felt frustrated over my shortcomings. If I was also doing enough, you wouldn’t have had to feel that way. Hah...both of us, we still have lots to work on together, don’t we?”

Togame’s familiar scent and warmth calms Sakura down, and finally, the tension in his body subsides. Sakura allows himself to look up at Togame from this distance. He is greeted with Togame’s gentle eyes and warm smile, as if to say, You can fuck up so many times, I’ll always be here waiting.

“You know you’ve saved me since our first fight, yeah? And you’ve been saving me every day since.” Togame’s hand comes up to brush away strands of hair that got plastered on Sakura’s forehead. “If anything, I’m the one who should be asking if I’m deserving of someone like you, Sakura.”

“Don’t say that,” Sakura mutters, heat rising up from his neck to his cheeks. Leave it to Togame to say something so romantic that it turns Sakura’s just-anxious brain completely haywire.

“It’s true. So, there’s no way I’m leaving you, Sakura. I can promise that. Not even if you make me.”

“Really?”

“Mhm.”

“Next time you leave in a middle of an argument, I’m beating your ass.”

“Sounds fair enough.”

“And when I say something stupid again like what I said tonight, you can beat me up.”

Togame laughs softly, weaving their fingers together. With such a firm grip, no words are needed to assure Sakura that he will not be left behind. Not when it’s Togame. A smile grows on his own lips as he meets Togame’s gaze.

“Right, I’ll deal with you properly then, Sakura.”

As we know, in Naruto, awakening new powers and body moves on its own when your loved one was in trouble or in danger.

This was when he uses Kage bunshin no Jutsu for the first time to protect Iruka.

1. Zabuza attacking Sasuke

No. Of shadow clones increasing when Sasuke was in trouble

Ah... Shadow clones.... And quite a lot of them...

2. Sasuke's death

This is the first time we see Naruto awaken this Nine tails power despite all the hatred he accumulated during his childhood when the villagers treated him badly. The reason for his awakening was none other than Sasuke.

3. Gaara vs Sasuke

When Sasuke admitted that he too was his precious comrade and that he could save Sakura, he could make Tajū kage bunshin no jutsu. Meanwhile, when it comes to Sakura's rescue...he was only able to make 4 Kage Bunshins compared to thousands.

TO PROTECT SOMEONE IMPORTANT.... NARUTO BECOMES EVEN STRONGER!!

4. Sasuke retrieval arc

Naruto ice hockey AU!! a good friend suggested there should be more art of hockey equipment and then I went out and started looking at hockey equipment for references and then this wedged itself into the back of my mind until i gave up and painted it. click for better quality. Yes i have mock ups. They will not see the light of day until I finish all 3 jersey variants ! AU and design notes under the cut if you fancy <3

Lore… i used to run a Naruto blog when I was much much much younger. you are currently witnessing my old special interest cross over with my current special interest.

Bits and pieces from this AU that I’ve been rotating in my mind:

Welcome to the Elemental Nations Hockey League? :D

Every season they play for the Kaguya Cup, named after the mother of ice hockey who invented it eons ago with two sons on her hip ! Yeah sure we’ll go with that….

I present to you the Original FIVE: the Kumo Cloud, the Iwa Quake, the Kiri Mist Wraiths, the Suna Dust Devils, and the Konoha Leafs !! Sorry to actual Leafs fans but I thought about this for much longer than I want to admit and there is no other name that makes sense here. I just think they’re fun <3 (SO many translatable motifs and ideas and I can’t include them all here)

3-man units EASILY become lines. I thought about this and yeah . Yeah. Team 7 is still comprised of Naruto-Sakura-Sasuke OBVIOUSLY . there is no gender segregation in this AU because i chose joy and fun when dreaming it up. also they all wore 7 in juniors. 777. 7-UP line LMAO. jackpot line? Team 7. haven’t decided.

Naruto quick facts: winger, wears the C (eventually) undrafted in his first eligible year, taken 111th overall in his second (he was a late bloomer + canon-compliant asshole child era meant nobody wanted his ass!! Konoha took a chance on him!). Wore #7 he wears #1 because of his draft position and because he’s gonna be the best player EVER. <3 He thinks he’s normal about Sasuke (he is not)

Sasuke notes: winger, wears an A. went 1st overall. No weaknesses … the Perfect player ! except he is Not his brother Itachi who ALSO went 1st overall about 10 years ago. the world wont let him forget it . Itachi is now retired for medical reasons but works in hockey as a scout, but the comparisons haunt our little man… </3 Sasuke’s D+1 year he wasn’t ready for the ENHL and everyone started calling him a bust because he got sent down!! SAD!!!! Wears #77 as a Leaf because they all agreed it would be fair no one should have #7. Trade rumours to the Oto Thunder every season like clockwork because Orochimaru, Oto’s GM, originally tanked to get Sasuke in the draft and FAILED…!

Sidebar i believe in my heart that Naruto and Sasuke played for rival juniors teams; the Uzushio Tempest and the Uchiwa Flames…… let me cook here alright,.. i just think they developed an intense fixation on each other and got thrown out of games for fighting ! Ironically this rivalry unlocked their potential and they were in a heated scoring race thru the entire season…..

Sakura: undisputed center and the bus driver of this line!!! wears the other A! Drafted 7OA and everyone was mad about it because they wanted someone else. Wore #7 through juniors to spite them !! Currently wears #16 just like her hero Tsunade <3 Tactical mind, not naturally talented but worked hard for everything she has, an extremely effective playmaker… I think she is built like a tank… terrifying power forward Sakura…………….

They play for the Konoha Leafs obviously...! Theyre the cringefail girlies for about 2 years once they make it to the ENHL, godbless . Lots of individual flashes of brilliance but no long-term success and zero team cohesion as they are shuffled around. Naruto and Sasuke both have a go at being center but they both Suck at anchoring a line like that.. they aint made that way (to ME!!!) Konoha Leafs on the verge of collapse and wasting another 5-7 yrs of being mediocre. Then one day coach Kakashi decides ‘Hm. Maybe. i will make Sakura play with these two assholes.’ And the rest is history!!!!!!

Listen I just think she would corral their worst impulses and keep them in line…. I feel like she’s a very responsible and smart 2-way player and balances Naruto and Sasuke’s heavy offence out. They get really dangerous the moment they settle into their roles. 777. JACKPOT!!!!!!

Various team mascots are the tailed beasts? <3 I just think it would be neat….!

Lots of expansion team ideas (smaller villages) and a junior league (clan associations !) many ideas…

DESIGN NOTES

In-universe, the above design is a 3rd jersey nodding towards Konoha's heritage. Prior to becoming the Leafs in the ENHL, they were the Demon Foxes!

WHY did i choose a third jersey…? This idea popped into my head when i heard rumours the ducks were leaning into their orange county ties in the rebrand and i thought ouuuhh you know what would fuck severely… naruto x ducks brand collaboration…… oramnge…. I love orange <3

Anyway Naruto had his heart set on being a goalie before tragically being moved to forward (the skaters …they YEARN for the pipes!!!!) so he wraps his stick in that insane goalie knob style <3 Where did you get that red and blue tape from Naruto…. C’mon now don’t be shy …

Blade is orange taped bc Naruto loves orange so bad. There are various ideas about white sticks/white tape being harder to see against the ice and i think he’d like the idea of taping his blade orange bc the doesn’t need that competitive advantage lol

Konoha home jerseys are green/brown/white/red/blue (think something closer to the Jounin flak jackets) More on them later mayhaps…

Out of universe, I based the colours and design elements largely off Naruto’s outfits over the series. The black and orange is a nod to his first outfit in Shippuden — note the black on his shoulders cutting across his chest and the shape language of the piping on the abdomen.

The red piping is because reaaaalllly wanted to add his Hokage robe flames but i tried it and thought it looked lame as HELL . So i suppose we will save that for a specialty jersey somewhere down the line (many thoughts… many many thoughts….)

The blue/white/red on his skates, sleeves, and gloves is an homage to the Uchiha, who had a hand in founding the team + have people within the org. I imagine the Uchiha clan as this, idk, juggernaut of hockey dynasties…!! A finger in every possible pie. Maybe they have partial ownership of the team. They do equipment manufacturing (gloves, skates, tape!), PR, scouting… everything!!!

Shoulder patches are Uzushio’s whirlpool insignia.

The ribbed neck guard is a reference to Naruto’s first jumpsuit design. He definitely thinks he doesn’t need a neck guard until Sasuke mentions that they’re kind of cool — a blatant manipulation to get Naruto to wear one. <- they are unwell about each other you see

Naruto tapes his hockey socks different every time for good luck. someone said variety is the spice of life and then he heard somewhere else that spicy foods promote longevity and his wires got crossed and now he thinks of variance = spice = a long playing career.

a better ending for Naruto: Shippuden than the actual ending is what if Sasuke died sacrificing himself to save the world alongside Kaguya. Sasuke's sacrifice also revives Neji, Madara, Itachi, Obito, and those nameless samurai ppl from the five kage summit arc and them sasuke haters on reddit can finally shut the fuck up and be satisfied with him dying (eh, i do not hate sasuke or anything but i'm fine with him dying because he's in the way of the great Naruto X Madara ship and I also want to make Sakura suffer because I hate her). Then after mourning Sasuke's death Naruto decides to marry Madara Uchiha, become hokage, and start actually fucking fixing the shinobi system starting with getting rid of those stupid Chūnin Selection Exams, restoring the rain village like he promised konan, and banning slavery in the hyuga clan. Sakura is a stupid bitch who is too busy being a cook at some restaurant spending the rest of her life being a miserable sad bitch who gave up being a ninja because her bad boy crush died and everyone tells her to stop whining and get back in the kitchen because i hate her. Naruto is such a giga chad alpha male hero protagonist of the Konoha village he also ends up marrying more men like Ryu from Street Fighter and Jin Kazama from Tekken who join his harem. They join Madara in giving Naruto all the love and respect after Naruto suffered so much in life. One day, Madara finds out he is pregnant with Naruto's child. Madara is a male hermaphrodite who has a vagina thanks to Indra's chakra. Naruto would be a such loving husband satisfying Madara's cravings for ramen, rubbing his massive pregnant tummy, and feeling their child kicking inside of his pregnant belly. Naruto would hold Madara's hand as Madara keeps pushing giving birth to the hokage Naruto's child. Itachi and Obito would also get harem of bitches and have lots of children, starting a large family. Itachi, Madara, and Obito fufill Sasuke's dying wish of restoring the Uchiha clan.
