シネマティックモードノート by Sako Teppei
Yesterday, I visited Nito, a contemporary art space in Tokyo where you can buy artworks from different artists. If an artist's work gets bought, they get to continue exhibiting in the space and the price of their next artwork is doubled. It's an interesting take on the commercialization of art. I know of the place because my partner, who is a contemporary artist exhibited there for a time.
A photograph I took in Nito of シネマティックモードノート.
On this post, I want to tackle a particular artwork I encountered yesterday. That is シネマティックモードノート (Cinematic Mode Note) by artist Sako Teppei (迫鉄平). Cinematic Mode Note is a video shot entirely using the Cinematic Mode video on the new iPhone 13 models. It features various locations across Tokyo. The video was 18 minutes long.
On the first few minutes of watching the video, it escaped me that it was shot entirely on an iPhone. We entered the room where the exhibit was held without reading the title of the video. My partner and I were sure that it was shot using an expensive camera, using a low aperture to obtain a shallow depth of field that was exhibited on certain shots of the video. It was only after looking at the leaflet and reading the title that it all clicked that it was all shot on an iPhone. After realizing this, we quickly identified the 'flaws' in the computational shallow depth of field of the footage.
As more and more people exclusively use their smartphones as their photo and video recording device, it's interesting to see how the technology in these devices continually improve over time. The way we can look back on our memories will be very different with these tools at hand now. Perhaps this is what the artist wanted to portray in the video. With various footage, they might be trying to invoke a feeling in the audience that they are yet to experience, or have experienced recently. Nostalgia may no longer have a retro aesthetic to us in the future.
Features like the Cinematic Mode are what shatters barriers in media production that were present before. Producing high-quality content no longer has a financial barrier that only a select few individuals and corporations can pass through. While still imperfect, it does the job enough, especially for SNS consumption.
