Pope St. Clement I of Rome

Feast Day: November 23

Patronage: stonecutters, marble-workers, mariners, sailors, tanners, sick children

Saint Clement was an early successor to St. Peter, installed as Pope in the year 88 and one of the 5 Apostolic Fathers, who provide a direct link between the Apostles and later generations of the church fathers. He’s a contemporary of St. Paul and is mentioned in Philippians 4:3. St. Clement's  First Epistle to the Corinthians, condemned the unauthorized and unjustified division between the laity and clergy, urging charity to heal this riff. It’s said that he was miraculously saved from martyrdom when he was cast in the sea with an anchor bound to him.

A beautiful sunny and warm (27) day without any wind .

I got asn early start as I wanted to explore a lot of the city before meeting up with people for lunch. After a coffee in the main square i made my way along the narrow streets of the old town past the churches of St Roh and St Anne to the Arc de Triomphe.

through the Arc is tghe wonderful space the Place Royal e de Peyrou with Watchtower from which tou can get a splendid view of the amazing SaintClement Aqueduct. built in the 18th century which spreads over 850 metres and has 53 arches on two levels .

I walked to the Jardin de Plantes only to find it did not open until midday so I changed my plans and headed to the Cathedral . It is an imposing building but really squashed in a very small space. As it was Sunday , Mass was being said and the church looked specialwith candles etc and light shing in through the stained glass windows.

By then time was getting short so I mad my way back past some old Roman rruins to meet the others for lunch at Les Halles.

After luch i headed to the Museum Fabre and the art collection .

After that a quick walk to the Agora which is now the dance academy but was in the 18th century an Ursuline convent.

By then i was weary and went back to my hotel for a quick refresh then to a local bar for a wine and snack.

There was some excitement as someone had let their dog off the leash in the nearby square/ park and it had attacked another dog and then run into the street causing trams to stop. Police were on the scene in no time . Free entertainment !

Saint Clément

Ça va être court pour notre saint du jour, un pape romain du 1er siècle, parce que clairement on ne sait pas trop trop trier le vrai du faux de la légende de sa vie. On vous a gardé l'essentiel, pas le temps pour les controverses historiques.

Ce qu'on sait c'est qu'il était le 4ème pape après saint Pierre mais l'église catho n'était pas vraiment bien installée à l'époque, et on a trouvé qu'il avait une trop grande influence sur le pouvoir italien. Du coup hop, il s'est fait exiler manu militari en Crimée.

Pour être sûr qu'il passe un bon moment on l'a mis aux travaux forcé dans une carrière de marbre et on a fini par l'achever en le jetant à la mer avec une ancre autour du cou. Radical.

Plus tard des papes ont ramené ses reliques à Rome où il a sa petite basilique, construite là où était sa maison.

C'est donc le saint patron des marbriers et des marins (l'ancre autour du coup, toussa toussa).

Saint Columban (Columbanus)

Patronage: motorcyclists, Columban Missionaries, Derry, Ireland

Saint Columban was Ireland's great missionary to Europe. He was classicly taught, lived as a hermit monk, and after 12 years in seclusion and prayer, traveled to Europe with 12 companions to preach the faith.  He established many monasteries, the greatest being Bobbio Abbey which adhered to a disciplined, austere religious life. Columban wrote treatises on penance, poetry, the monastic rule and against Arianism.  He died at Bobbio Abbey.
