BCCI Announces India Women’s ODI Squad for Australia Tour, Two Star Players Dropped
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the 16-member India Women’s ODI squad on November 19 for the upcoming three-match series against Australia. Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to lead the side, with Smriti Mandhana serving as her deputy. The series is set to begin on December 5 at Allan Border Field, Brisbane.
The squad announcement raised eyebrows with the notable omissions of opener Shafali Verma and all-rounder Shreyanka Patil. Shafali, who has been a consistent performer in the past, has struggled with form lately, managing only 56 runs in the recent ODI series against New Zealand. Shreyanka, on the other hand, did not feature in the New Zealand series due to shin splints and remains out of the squad.
Other players missing from the squad include Dayalan Hemalatha, Uma Chetry, and Sayali Satgare. Hemalatha is currently representing the Perth Scorchers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), where she has scored 88 runs in six innings with a top score of 41.
In a positive development, Harleen Deol has been recalled to the ODI setup. Her last ODI outing was against Australia at Wankhede Stadium in 2023. Harleen has accumulated 207 runs in 10 ODIs, including two half-centuries, at an average of 25.87. Young wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh also makes her return after missing the New Zealand series to focus on her Grade 12 final exams.
India Women’s ODI Squad
The squad comprises a mix of experienced players and rising talents: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana (vc), Priya Punia, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Richa Ghosh (wk), Tejal Hasabnis, Deepti Sharma, Minnu Mani, Priya Mishra, Radha Yadav, Titas Sadhu, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Singh Thakur, and Saima Thakor.
ODI Series Schedule
The series will kick off with back-to-back matches at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field on December 5 and December 8. The final game will take place at WACA Ground, Perth, on December 11.
Meanwhile, Australia’s squad announcement is awaited. Their skipper Alyssa Healy remains doubtful after suffering a knee injury during the WBBL. Should she be unavailable, Tahlia McGrath is likely to lead the hosts.
This series is expected to be a litmus test for India’s preparations as they look to build a cohesive unit for future global tournaments. Fans will keep a keen eye on how the squad performs, especially in the absence of seasoned players like Shafali Verma.

[ad_1] Shafali Verma has been dropped. PC – BCCI Shafali Verma, the 20-year-old batter, has been left out of the India squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia, starting on December 5 in Brisbane. Shreyanka Patil, Dylan Hemalatha, Uma Chetry, Asha Sobhana, Pooja Vastrakar and Sayali Satgare aren’t part of the squad either. Incidentally, Shreyanka, India’s star spinner, has been struggling with a shin injury, and she didn’t play in any of the games in the three-match ODI rubber versus New Zealand. Sobhana and Pooja too have had injury setbacks and weren’t part of the New Zealand series.  Shafali could aggregate just 97 runs in the just-concluded T20 World Cup in the UAE. In the last two years, she has also been averaging a mere 14 in the ODI format. Meanwhile, the inexperienced pair of Tejal Hasabnis and Saima Thakor have been included. Thakor made her ODI debut against New Zealand last month, taking four wickets. The medium pacer also made a  useful contribution with the bat in the second game. On the other hand, Hasabnis accumulated 57 runs during that series.  Harleen Deol, the spinning all-rounder, returns to the set-up. Harleen, who has played 34 times for the country, was laid low by a knee injury while representing Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League. Titas Sadhu, the medium pacer, who has partaken in nine T20Is, also finds a place. Minnu Mani, the off-spinner, who recently led India A against Australia A, has made it to the ODI squad for the first time.  Harmanpreet Kaur will once again lead the Indian contingent.  India squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana (vc), Priya Punia, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Richa Ghosh (wk), Tejal Hasabnis, Deepti Sharma, Minnu Mani, Priya Mishra, Radha Yadav, Titas Sadhu, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Singh Thakur, Saima Thakor Series schedule: First ODI: Brisbane, December 5 Second ODI: Brisbane, December 8 Third ODI: Perth, December 11   The post Shafali Verma left out of India squad for Australia ODIs appeared first on Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles | Revsports. [ad_1] UP Warriorz head coach Jon Lewis ahead of WPL 3 (PC: WORDSWORK) UP Warriorz have announced the retention of most of their squad for the third Women’s Premier League (WPL) season in 2025. With 15 of their 18 players from last season retained, the franchise aims to build on its current foundation and strive for new achievements together in the coming years. Alyssa Healy, who led the team in the first two seasons, continues as a key part of the squad, along with Deepti Sharma, last season’s Most Valuable Player. The team’s core includes a strong mix of experienced international players and promising Indian talent, including Tahlia McGrath, Chamari Athapaththu, Sophie Ecclestone, Grace Harris, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Anjali Sarvani, and Shweta Sehrawat. In a recent trade, England batter Danni Wyatt moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore, while Parshavi Chopra, Yashasri S., and Laxmi Yadav are set to re-enter the auction pool. This continuity highlights the Warriorz’s approach to strengthen their team’s cohesion and build on their potential from past seasons, focusing on creating a tight-knit unit to pursue success in WPL 2025. Reflecting on team flexibility, head coach Jon Lewis emphasized the value of versatility, particularly in the fast-paced format of the WPL. “What you will see with the group of young Indian players and core batters we have, is that there will be flexibility. They will have to be flexible when they choose to step into international cricket, and this will be a good grounding for them in teaching them different roles and developing different roles within their game. Their ability can open lots of different avenues for them moving forward. So, I think having flexibility and adaptability as a player to play in multiple different spots is really important.” For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Retention List for UP Warriorz for WPL 2025 Remaining Purse – 3.9 Cr#WPLretention #WPL2025 #UP #TATAWPL pic.twitter.com/L929J2PWoV — RevSportz Global (@RevSportzGlobal) November 7, 2024 Kshemal Waingankar, Chief Operating Officer of Capri Sports, shared optimism about the team’s progress as they gear up for WPL Season 3. “The UP Warriorz have begun the preparations for Season 3 of the WPL, and we believe that continuity is one of the key aspects in terms of doing well in team sport. [ad_1] Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana against New Zealand (Image: BCCI) The resurgence in form from Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur during India’s ODI series against New Zealand has ignited newfound optimism in fans about the team’s prospects ahead of the 2025 ODI World Cup. Both the skipper and her deputy had consistent contributions in the 2-1 series victory, signalling a promising shift for India as they continue to refine their form and strategy following a disappointing run in the 2024 T20 World Cup.   Mandhana’s Timely Return to Form Smriti Mandhana, India’s vice-captain and one of the most talented batters in the women’s game, did not start off the series on the right foot, with an early dismissal in the first ODI, where she was the stand-in skipper. But her brilliant century in the last game of the series came as a reminder of her maturity and her growing role as a leader in the team. Her 100 off 122 deliveries was proof of her adaptability, blending patience with the right amount of aggression. Mandhana’s capacity to build partnerships was key throughout the series, including her partnerships with Jemimah Rodrigues and the captain, Harmanpreet. Her adaptability to anchor the innings or accelerate when needed proved why she is one of the pillars of the Indian batting lineup. Ahead of the World Cup next year, Mandhana’s return to form is invaluable.   Harmanpreet Displays All-Round Leadership The captain too had a solid series, announcing her comeback with impactful performances both as a middle-order batter and as a leader. Like Mandhana, Harmanpreet also had a shaky start to the series, when she stepped back into her role in the second ODI where she was unable to play an innings of substance. However, in the final game, the skipper played a crucial role in the win, scoring 59* (63 balls). She ended the chase in the 45th over and scored the winning runs. After ruthless scrutiny for her tactical blunders in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, this time around, her captaincy was instrumental in the series win. She was spot on with the rotation of her bowlers and field placements. And now, with her renewed form and adroit tactical decisions, the future looks bright for India heading into an ODI World Cup year.   India’s Well-Rounded Performance in the Series India’s series was one that was built on contributions with both bat and ball. In the first match, Radha Yadav dismantled the Kiwi batting lineup. Defending 227 runs, debutant Saima Thakor and Deepti Sharma too impressed with the ball in the middle overs. In the final match of the series, Priya Mishra and Deepti contributed and scalped crucial wickets. Priya impressed with her accuracy while Deepti was able to penetrate the batting lineup and prevent New Zealand from building a strong foundation. New Zealand, a quality side with standout players like Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday, met with an equally formidable response from India’s bowlers. They showcased their ability to handle pressure, defend totals and execute strategies with precision.   The Path Forward With the two leading ladies, Mandhana and Harmanpreet, finding their rhythm, India’s batting lineup immediately appears robust and capable of taking on the world’s best. Both veterans’ return to form has given the Women in Blue a much-needed confidence boost. For a team that has so much potential and emerging players like Tejal Hasabnis and Saima, it’s equally important that the veterans continue grooming fresh talent and strengthen the lineup ahead of the World Cup. This series win, especially against a team of New Zealand’s calibre after a disastrous World Cup campaign, is more than just a morale boost. If Harmanpreet and Smriti continue their form and peak at the right moment, India will have a formidable chance at the 2025 ODI World Cup. [ad_1] PC – BCCI. Saima Thakor. Saima Thakor, the Mumbai-born cricketer, has varied interests. When she was younger, she had aspirations of becoming a goalkeeper for her college team and then she ended up being the forward. When it came to cricket, she wished to be a wicketkeeper but took up pace bowling as it was told to her that it is relatively less expensive to bowl. Fast-forward to the present day, and she showed some spark with her medium pacers on her ODI debut against New Zealand. In the very next game, batting at No. 10, she stitched a 70-run stand for the 9th wicket with Radha Yadav, which almost eclipsed a record in ODIs. From the aforesaid lines, it is quite evident that Saima is a woman of many talents.  For starters, let’s consider her performance with the ball in the opening India-New Zealand ODI. Although she took the prized scalp of Suzie Bates in her first over with a fine outswinger, she seemed to be struggling with a change in tactics from Smriti Mandhana. The Indian skipper for that game had brought the ‘keeper up to the stumps, forcing Saima to zoom the ball on the stumps. Unfortunately, Saima lost her line and drifted a few of her offerings down the leg-side. However, Saima showcased that she has enough reservoirs of willpower as she picked up the scalp of Brooke Halliday in one of her later spells and ended up with redoubtable figures of 2 for 26 from seven overs. In the second ODI, Saima walked out to bat with India’s score reading 108 in a chase of 260. The lower-order batter once more showed some resilience by providing Radha support.  Even though the target proved to be too steep for the two lower-order batters, Saima’s performance gave more evidence of her mental strength. Maybe, just maybe her attitude towards cricket is a reflection of her struggles to overcome financial problems. Somewhere all those struggles seem to have emboldened her to take on challenges with the right mindset.  The second game also saw Priya Mishra earning her ODI cap from none other than Harmanpreet Kaur, the India captain. The leg-spinner imparted some decent revs on the ball and dislodged Halliday with flight and guile. She also gave a glimpse of her sharp reflexes by running out Lauren Down at the bowler’s end.  The fielding aspect of her game gains significance from the standpoint that India have generally been criticised for their lack of athleticism. Among the current lot, only Radha and Jemimah Rodrigues can be considered as good fielders. Incidentally, Radha pouched some splendid catches in the second encounter.  In that backdrop, this bilateral series versus the T20 Champions is the right platform to usher in new players. In Priya and Saima, in particular, India seem to have found a couple of pugnacious cricketers, who might just infuse a dash of zest and vigour into the side.
