Authentic XVIII Century printed north coast of Brittany map between Cancale and Frehel Cap with Saint Malo Corsairs Harbour on the British Channel
What is funny is that the map is seaside and not a view from the coast towards the Channel , and so made for sailors of this time !!!
All the churches, Windmills, castles,…. are shown to be seen from the ship

Day 16: Storm
The waves were rough and choppy, they typically were in the oceans of Khre-Salis, as Isiri rode along the flow of one with little effort. She was following Powder, who was reaching high speeds on her sailboard, hands gripping tightly to the curved metal of the sail support. It was at a good clip too, but not so fast to outmatch the mermaid, who had been loosely rolling along in the created pressure wave. It wasn’t much, especially since she was just longer than the length of Powder’s whole board, but enough to keep her from having to maintain any real effort to keep up with her. The bigger issue was keeping away from the board’s bottom fins, she had already knocked Powder over once by flexing her tail too hard.
They had been moving along for some time, simply enjoying the perpetual sunset that Khre-Salis’s permanently locked sky offered, when Powder pulled back on her sail suddenly. The force caused her board to brake; nearly knocking her off balance. She recovered in just the nick of time, sliding her leg down and eventually stooping low into a kneeling position. “Ah shit.”
“What’s wrong?” Isiri stuck her head out above the surface, closing her auxiliary gills tight so that her voice would carry forward and over the din of the sea. Taking a quick look around, nothing seemed awry.
“The clouds.” Powder adjusted her legs as she spoke, shifting sideways to face Isiri. “Looks like a storm’s rolling in.” A slight hint of panic entered her tone as her eyes darted from the horizon to the sky, to the flickering lights of Sequence Charter, only a small dot in the distance. “Fuck, there’s no way we’re gonna make it back in time.”
Following her gaze, Isiri too looked at the clouds. They were grey, rolling as quickly as the waves below them. It would be a nasty one, she could taste it in the water. Most of the already scarce ocean life had already begun to go deeper. These signs had been apparent for a while, and her mind swirled lightly at the notion that Powder hadn’t realized it. “Oh, it’s been on the horizon a long time. Seems like it’ll thrash a whole lot.”
Powder had begun gnawing on her lip as she considered her options. “Winds’ll rip up real bad. It’ll tear a hole clear through my sail, knock me flat into the water. Let’s see if Torroid is free…” Her hand pressed against her hip, slipping into the sole pocket on her wetsuit. Her face dropped. “Aaaand I left my communicator at the lab. Great.”
Smiling gently, Isiri took Powder’s hand in her own. “It’ll be okay.” She squeezed gently. “You have some time yet, let’s just keep going. And should worse come to worse, I’ll protect you.”
Powder sucked in a deep breath and squeezed back. “Right. We’re just wasting time out here.”
Isiri stuck her tongue out, lighting the lure on the tip of it playfully. “Come on! I’ll race you all the way back. Loser has to catch the other a fish.”
In a flash, Isiri dove deep, feeling the direction of the swell and the ocean’s reaction to the storm. Her caudal fin pressed hard, moving along with the current to head back towards Sequence Charter. She could see the shadow of Powder’s board on the surface above. Her speed was increasing, but it wouldn’t be enough. Isiri sucked in a fresh mouthful of water and began to sing softly. It didn’t need to be loud, just strong. She could feel the notes get carried by the sea, traveling swiftly through the medium as they spread in all directions. The world in front of her vanished for a moment, zooming out and up into the sky and into the winds. A current lifted from the deep, rolling and pushing ever so slightly against the warp of the storm cell. It was slight, but it would be enough.
Vision came back to her eyes, and Isiri swam faster, realizing that she had fallen behind she folded her arms tight to recover speed. Power coursed through her, and she breached the surface just behind Powder, blowing a kiss quickly as she returned below. Powder grinned wide, gripping tight against her sailboard. “So that’s how it’s gonna be?”
Isiri burbled with delight. The two kept even pace, trading back and forth against each other as they closed the distance to town. Stopping short as the shore crept up, Isiri lifted her head above water to make sure that Powder made it to shore safely. Flushing out her gills with relief, the first drops of rain began to fall as lightning flashed across the sky. She slumped over slightly, suddenly tired as the currents sank back to their proper places. “You did it, you made it.”
Powder panted slightly, holding her hand over her chest. “Yeah. Did you see how fast we were going?!”
“Mm, that was the fastest I’ve seen you go.” Isiri mused softly as she collected a new bubble of sea water. “We should get you inside. It’s only going to get worse.”
“Right.” Powder shook her head back to focus. “Weird how the wind picked up but the storm slowed down. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Isiri smiled knowingly. “The Abyss moves unpredictably.”
“Heh, maybe.” Taking her girlfriend’s hand, Powder smiled gently. “I guess I owe you a fish, huh?”
The mermaid’s eyes lit up. “Yep! That you do!”

I've been busy creating my new digital paint style. All the pieces are from photograghs I've taken over the past few years, at Roweena and the Dalles on the Columbia River and on Maui at Ho'okipa beach
I love the colors and action in Sailboarding but could never get a photograph to capture what I felt and saw when I watched it.
Then I found Studio Artist. It allows me to control every "hair" of the brush, and the way each hair interacts with the canvas and any previous brush stroke. The learning curve is close to vertical, and at times, inverted, ( I'm pretty sure I've fallen off several times).
I think the results are pretty awesome :)

Starfall: Chapter 10: Aerial Acrobatics
Previous Chapter: Next Chapter:
Tumblr media
“I’m on the way back. I got the purple one.” Tails was telling Sonic over the phone, on his way back from his successful hunt. He’d been worried his little yellow propeller plane wasn’t going to be fast enough to outrun Star, but he’d successfully gotten the Emerald from a gem collector in Mexico by swapping it out for the fake one he’d made during an auction. He was glad it hadn’t been too far, the tricky thing about tracking the Emeralds being that they flared up with detectable Chaos energy in weird patterns, and rarely was it in the geographical vicinity he needed it to be. It wasn’t such a big deal when someone like Sonic could take a five minute round trip at high speed, but Tails didn’t have that kind of afterburners.
“Good work, bud. Looks like she got the one in the Amazon. Big said she rescued Froggy and he gave it to her, not knowing what was going on. The more I find out, the more confused I am.” Sonic sighed. “She’s lucky she’s cute, just saying.”
“If she really is Shadow’s long-lost girlfriend, you’d better not let him hear you say that.” Tails laughed.
“Good point. Amy’s already mad about it, I don’t need them ganging up on me.”
Tails glanced at his instruments with a frown. “... Uh oh.”
“Uh oh?”
“I got something coming up on my radar. The local flight path is supposed to be clear for the next couple hours…”
“You don’t think she got her hands on a plane, do you?”
“I don’t think I want to find out.” Tails frowned. “I'll pick up some speed.” When he glanced back, he spotted an Eggman plane approaching far faster than his could hope to outrun.
In the Eggplane, Star spotted the little yellow machine working overtime trying to get away, and shifted the controls to E-911. “Eggdoc, take over. I've got my sailboard if I have a problem. Approach from above.”
“Very well, Miss Star.”
She unbuckled herself from her restraining harness and slung herself out onto the tail of their own plane, letting go and dropping right onto the noise of Tails’.
Thunk.
“Sonic, she jumped on my plane!” The fox kit wailed.
“Tails?!”
Star straddled the nose, holding onto the windshield to steady herself, before reaching over and hitting “End call”. Sonic's voice disappeared and she ripped the phone from Tails’ hand. “Let's turn that off for a minute, shall we?”
Tails let out a scream as she zombie-crawled over the windshield. Her ears twitched uncomfortably.
“You're loud.”
“Go away!” He screeched.
“I will. Just give me the Emerald, I know that you have it.” Star’s eyes flashed gold for a moment, which only served to scare Tails more.
“No!” He yelped.
“Then I'll crash this plane and dig through the wreckage.” She lifted a fist, but didn't swing yet. “I'm giving you a choice, you understand that?”
Tails swallowed hard, trying to bluff his way out. “I'm not giving to the Emerald.”
“Wrong choice.” Star sighed, looking disappointed, before she put her fist through the controls.
“Hey!” Fear lost out to indignation for Tails, and he tried to grab her arm. “Don't! That's my baby!”
“It's a machine.” Star jerked back, out of his grip, and kicked the storage compartment he had built behind the pilot’s seat.
A glimmer of purple rewarded her and she dove over the back of the seat, ripping mechanisms out of the way to get her hands on the Emerald as the plane started to lose altitude.
“Hey! The harness won't release if you mess with that!” Tails panicked. He was stuck strapped in a crashing plane, with a ruthless girl who'd probably leave him to die to save time-
Star popped back out with the Emerald in hand and shoved it in her bag, brows furrowed as he kept smacking the harness release with increasing terror in his eyes. Blue eyes, like her own. Like Maria.
He's only a child.
Tails froze when her claws, painted a terrifying red, shot past his face and shredded the harness strap. She pulled him out of the seat with one hand,  the other flicking a playing card sized piece of metal into the air. It unfolded into the sailboard, and she threw Tails onto the back of it before hopping up and grabbing the controls. “Hold on.” She ordered and leaned back, pulling them away from the crashing plane.
Tails had nothing to cling to but her leg, blinking, as she levelled out. “... you saved me?” He looked up.
Star didn't look at him, eyes on the horizon as she calculated a landing zone. “There was no reason for you to die.” She said quietly, barely audible over the sound of the wind. “What kind of monster do you take me for?”
“I don't know. You've been bulldozing through everyone for the Chaos Emeralds. You kicked my best friend down a pyramid and you just wrecked my plane! That's my pride and joy, you know!” Now that he wasn't in immediate danger, he had it in him to be indignant again.
“I gave you a choice.” Star shrugged, finally looking down at him. Up close, she had a surprisingly soft face. Her red eye makeup was smudged, running a little down her cheeks almost like bloody tears. There were dark circles under her eyes, which looked far more sad than angry.
“So what did you save me for, then, cause… I actually can fly.” He said the last part sheepishly. “I was stuck in the harness, but I can fly.”
“I wasn't aware that was a talent of foxes.” Star raised an eyebrow. “I was under the impression you were terrestrial.”
“It's a birth defect. I can spin my tails like a propellor.” He squirmed a little, looking down.
Star gave him a considering look. “You are self conscious about it?”
“The village I was born in… they were pretty nasty about it. But then I met Sonic, and my other friends.” He was treading carefully now, watching her face. There was a chance she’d just toss him off the sailboard now that she knew. He’d be fine, but he didn’t want to get thrown if he could help it.
“People can be cruel.” She simply nodded, pulling at the controls again to start lowering their altitude. “I have a didactic recollection. I remember every single time I’ve ever been called a freak. It was true, but it still hurt to hear.”
“That was on the ARK, right? Because you’re an Ultimate Lifeform?” Tails tightened his grip on her leg, a little like a hug, and watched the stunned softening of her expression.
“You must know Shadow too.” She sighed. “And if you do, you must know about Maria and I?”
“He’s our friend… well, kinda. He’s kinda rivals with Sonic, but their relationship is kind of complicated anyway. He told us about Maria Robotnik, but not anything about you.”
“That’s… unsurprising.” Star shook her head, teeth gritted, and the look in her eyes seemed to deaden slightly. “My relationship with Shadow is also complicated.”
“You sound mad at him.” Tails frowned.
“I am.” Her answer was too fast and she tore her eyes away from him. She was an awful liar, just like Knuckles.
“No you’re not.” He muttered, pulling on her boot lightly. “Tell me what’s going on. Maybe I can help you.”
“You can’t. It’s too late to fix it.” Her voice cracked slightly. “It’s too late to fix me. I just have to finish this.”
“Finish what?” Tails frowned. “What are you doing with the Emeralds? Cause you’re clearly not trying to kill the world.”
“No… no, it’s Maria’s planet. I can’t.” Star shook her head. The ground was in sight now, and she kept gliding them down. “I need them. Shadow will find me once I have them all. He’ll want to protect the Earth, so he’ll find me.”
“He’d probably find you anyway. You could talk about what happened, and why you’re mad at him.” Tails frowned.
“Talking doesn’t change anything.” She rubbed her face, brows furrowed, and when she opened her eyes they seemed hazy. It didn’t take a genius to figure out she was utterly exhausted and very much not okay, and Tails was a genius. “When I have the Emeralds, I’ll be a threat. He’ll have to use his full strength. Then however it ends, it ends.”  Tails reached for her arm, trying to get her to look at him again, but the sailboard jolted as she dropped them low and slung a leg down to skid them to a stop. “This is a safe place.” She said softly, pulling the phone she’d snatched from him out of her pocket and tossing it to him. “Call your friends to come take you home.”
Tails frowned, looking up at her as he slowly climbed off the sailboard. “What are you going to do next?”
“I have two emeralds left. Once I have them, I’ll face Shadow.”
“You’re going to fight him?” He frowned.
“It’s the only way. What was between us was broken… it’s been broken since he abandoned me.” She rubbed her face again, ears drooping. It was the only outward sign she was cracking like Tails suspected. She was a bad liar, but she was good at steeling her expression and hiding her emotions. Shadow was too, so they had that in common. “He’ll protect Maria’s home with all his strength. And it’ll destroy what’s left between us completely. Then I can go home, without anything tying me here anymore. And he can forget about me completely, like he wants to so badly.”
“Star, if you’re in proximity to all seven of the emeralds, Shadow can go super. He could kill you with that kind of power.”
“Either way, I’ll be going home.” She smiled, unfazed, and leaned on the sailboard controls for a moment. “What was your name, little one?”
“Miles Prower. But everybody calls me Tails.” He blinked, derailed.
Star reached out a hand and crouched, lightly patting him between his ears like she remembered Maria doing to her long ago when she was a half-grown little hoglet at her heels. “I think, in another life, I would have liked to be your friend. Take care, Tails.”
“Wait, Star-” He startled, but she was already up and yanking the control of her sailboard, shooting upward into the sky. The Eggplane she’d jumped out was passing ahead, and while Tails watched in amazement she overshot it, collapsed her sailboard, and let herself fall. Within a few meters, she warped from freefall to inside the plane, and there was a slight shift that indicated the controls were being taken over from a co-pilot before the aircraft wheeled and took off into the clouds and out of sight.
Tails stood there, wide eyed for a moment before looking at his phone in his hand. It was ringing, displaying twenty missed calls from Sonic desperately trying to get ahold of him. He could only imagine how terrified Sonic must have been, to hear him screaming that Star had boarded his plane and suddenly drop the call. He quickly answered. “Sonic!”
“Tails! Are you alright? I thought… I got scared, when you hung up and wouldn’t answer.”
“I’m okay, I swear. I… Star boarded the plane. And crashed it.”
“Are you hurt?!”
“No. I got stuck in the restraint harness, but she pulled me out and took me safely to land.” Tails clarified. “She saved me, cause the harness wouldn’t release. I’d have been stuck in the wreckage.”
“She…saved you? But she crashed the plane!”
“I don’t think she’s bad, Sonic. But she’s definitely not okay. We talked on the way down.”
“That’s a weird take, bud. What did she say? And turn your location on, I’ll come get you.”
Tails acquiesced, turning on the setting on his phone for his best friend to find him. “She’s after Shadow. She says he abandoned her on the ARK… and she wants answers. She’s only collecting the emeralds so he’ll use his full powers against her.”
“That doesn’t sound like Shadow.” Sonic’s voice sounded hesitant. “He could do a lot of damage if he did use all his abilities. You remember how bad it was before.”
“Sonic, I think that’s what she’s counting on.” Tails turned his head as he spotted a dust trail headed right for him. “Oh, good timing.”
Sonic’s call disconnected and the blue hedgehog skidded to a stop in front of him, hands settling on his shoulders to check him for injury. Sonic could be such a hoverer sometimes, but he knew there was a reason for it. “You’re sure you’re not hurt? She didn’t swat you or something?”
“No. She kinda patted my head before she left.” Tails smiled weakly. “It’s the weirdest thing.”
Sonic folded him into a hug. “Yeah, it’s weird. But I’m glad you’re okay. C’mon, let’s go home and we can figure it out from there.”
“You mean my house.” Tails teased. “You’re just a permanent couch-crasher.”
“I have a whole room.”
“That I set up cause you won’t settle down anywhere, and I wanted my couch back!” Tails laughed as Sonic lifted him up on his shoulders to zoom them both home.
“You love having me over.”
“Of course I do. You’re my best friend.” Tails glanced back up at where the Eggplane had vanished. Star had seemed so sad when she’d said Maria’s name, and so angry when she’d said Shadow’s… were those the only friends she’d had? Fifty years without them… that would probably have made him willing to go to extremes too.
“Either way, I’ll be going home.” She’d said it emphatically, without a trace of concern. He couldn’t help but wonder if she meant it. That she didn’t care if she lived or died at Shadow’s hand, as long as she got her answer and broke whatever feelings she still harbored for him in a bloody showdown.
He didn’t like that thought. And he didn’t think Shadow was going to like it either. “We’ve really got to find Shadow. I think he’s the only one who can stop this.”
“I think you’re right.” Sonic nodded. “Hang on. Let’s get home.”
Tumblr media
Star set the Eggplane quietly down at the base and put her hands in her lap, eyes fixed on the console. Eggdoc looked over at her, the lights that formed his eyes flickering. “Miss Star. I am detecting high levels of cortisol. Are you injured?”
“... He didn’t tell them about me.” She whispered. “He has new friends and he… he only told them about Maria.” Her jaw trembled and the embarrassing heat of tears welled up in her eyes. “I… I didn’t even make it into the story? Even a footnote? I was supposed to be his future, like he was mine. I was… I literally only exist for him, and he doesn’t even care enough to remember me?” It hurt. It hurt so much more than she thought it would, to hear Shadow had completely forgotten about her. She’d wanted to know why he’d never come back for her on the ARK before leaving in the escape pod. She’d wanted to know why he never looked for her before he tried to destroy the planet.
It looked like she had her answer. Because he didn’t care about her. She was forgettable, so much so that she wasn’t even a part of his history anymore. He’d been everything to her, and she was nothing at all.
I can’t live like this. I can’t go back to the ARK after this, where the memories are everywhere. I’m sorry, Professor, I can’t finish Project Starlight. This Star is burning out.
Eggdoc hesitantly patted her trembling back with a metal hand. “There there. Do not cry. You successfully collected the emerald, there is no reason to be so sad. When Doctor Robonik takes control of the world, he could crush the person who has made you so unhappy?”
That only made Star cry harder. “I don’t want to crush him, Eggdoc…” She rasped. “I love him. Even though he left me. Even though I waited for a rescue that never came for fifty years. I… I just want…”
“You want to go home. You have said that before.”
No. I don’t want to go home when home isn’t home. I want to go back to the past, but it’s impossible. I don’t want… anything. I just want to stop.
“I can’t go home.” She whispered, wiping her cheeks on her gloves. “I’m tired.”
“You could rest for a while before your next emerald. I can isolate the data for you via download from the main base console.” The robot offered.
“Can you just tell me where it is?” She sniffled, trying to get control of herself. It felt so hard to hold onto control. She wanted to melt into a puddle and cry, scream, destroy everything in the vicinity until somewhere in the rubble appeared a solution. A time machine that would let her run into Maria’s arms and cry to her big sister about how broken her heart was and how empty her future had become without her. A way to see Gerald one more time, before his mind was swallowed by grief, and ask him if she had any other purpose for existing without Shadow, because he didn’t love her back and she didn’t know what to do. Maybe even a way to stop Shadow from following her to her room the night before the raid, so that kiss that didn’t count never happened at all. She didn’t want it to haunt her anymore.
She didn’t want anything to haunt her anymore, but she couldn’t outrun the ghosts. And she was going so fast as she tried that she was burning out.
“I will acquire the data. Would you like me to bring you anything, if you would like to remain here? It would be more peaceful, as I recall you and Doctor Robotnik were being antagonistic to each other prior to our departure. The pain medication for your injuries is still available.”
“One of the drinks from the mini fridge? Please.” She swallowed hard. “Actually, two of them if you don’t mind.”
“Energy drinks are the antithesis of my recommendation for rest.” Eggdoc got out of the plane.
“I’ll rest soon, promise. I just have 2 more Emeralds to get.” She rested her cheek on her arm and looked at him, wet eyes hopeless and tired. “Just a little more. That’s all.”
“If you insist, Miss Star. I will return with the data momentarily. We may require a larger aircraft if the location is a long distance.”
She nodded, wiping her cheeks. She’d managed to get the tears to stop, but now her eyes stung and felt swollen and miserable. Eggman had multiple flying contraptions, jets and planes, and even weird little discus-looking things. She could figure out how to fly any of them, his designs weren’t far off Gerald’s contraptions she’d been trained on. Eggdoc lumbered off to get her the coordinates, and she stared out the windshield absently.
I guess I don’t have to worry about him missing me… He never did. She’d been thinking of all the cutting things to say, to make sure what was left of what she’d thought she had with Shadow was shattered. She’d thought she was protecting him, always looking after him even when she was angry, by reassuring that he wouldn’t miss her when she went back home to the ARK and lived out her endless days among the memories. But it didn’t seem like that was necessary now…
He didn’t miss her, and she wasn’t going back. Nothing made on Earth could put her out of her misery… but Shadow could. And he wouldn’t even feel bad, would he?
Tumblr media
“How many damn phone calls do I have?” Shadow was sitting in a rest stop, halfway back towards the West Coast, and had finally decided to turn his phone back on. He had over a hundred missed calls from Sonic, fifty three from Tails, thirty six from Rouge, and fourteen from Amy. Not counting sixteen texts from Knuckles, who he hadn’t even realized knew how to text much less managed it with his boxing gloves on, that were all just “Shadow?” repeatedly.
Slightly concerned that his house had caught fire, he decided to call Rouge back. She was the more straightforward of them all anyway. He still didn’t feel like dealing with Sonic, and Amy was a little more scatterbrained than a cup of gas station coffee was able to help him make sense of.
She picked up on the first ring. “I was starting to wonder if you were dead.”
“I’m reasonably confident I’m functionally immortal.” He took another swallow of his now lukewarm coffee. “Why is half of Mystic Ruins blowing up my phone?”
“Your tragic backstory is causing global problems again.”
“Care to explain that? I’ve been on a road trip, without incident. I even slow down for school zones.” He sighed. “If GUN is accusing me of something again, it wasn’t me.”
“No, but GUN’s staying out of this one. I called Abe and everything.” Rouge snorted. “Something about honoring an agreement.”
“What’s going on, Rouge? I called you instead of Amy for quick answers.”
“You know a hedgehog named Star?”
Shadow felt like his stomach dropped to his shoes. For a split second he forgot how to breathe, mouth open and hands shaking hard enough he almost fumbled the phone. “H-how do you know that name?”
“She’s collecting the Chaos Emeralds. Apparently she was in GUN custody and when Abe found out he cut her loose. She’s been rogue ever since, no contact and seen working with Eggman.”
“Eggman?” Shadow almost spat the name. “No. The Star I know wouldn’t tolerate him. It must be someone else.”
“I’ve seen her. Black hedgehog, blue markings similar to yours, with blue eyes. Sonic and Tails have both seen her use the warp abilities you have, and she hit a GUN base with some shadow-melding ability that let her get in and out unseen.” Rouge sounded serious. “She triggered an avalanche in the Himalyas, and wrecked Tails’ plane this afternoon. She’s got five Chaos Emeralds, and the Master Emerald because she attacked Angel Island first.”
Shadow clenched his fists, trying to stave off a panic attack. Star was alive. She’d been trapped in GUN custody all this time and he hadn’t known? He felt sick. “She’s alive… I thought… Professor said that she’d been killed fifty years ago…”
“You already know he lied to you. He manipulated your memories for that whole Eclipse Cannon thing.” Rouge hated to say anything negative about Shadow’s family from the ARK, knowing how he felt about them. But Gerald had set the hedgehog up for his own ends, and Shadow was the one left to suffer for it. Now, it seemed, so was Star.
“She’s alive.” Shadow was stuck. Star was alive. Star was alive and after the emeralds, which meant she had to have something planned. She was brilliant, and capable of just as much as he was… what was she doing? “I have to find her. If Eggman’s manipulating her-”
“Shadow, she told Tails when she gets all seven Chaos Emeralds, she’s coming for you.” Rouge said quietly. “You could be in a lot of danger.”
“Star’s not like that.” Shadow swallowed hard. “She wouldn’t hurt me. She and I… we’re not meant to fight. Not seriously.” Maria had hated it when they so much as sparred for training and lab study, he couldn’t imagine Star really trying to hurt him. She wasn’t capable of it, he didn’t think… there had to be another explanation. “I can talk to her. I’m on my way back.”
“Better put a rush on that. She’s got five and the Master Emerald. Amy’s on her way to head her off for the next one, but she’s walking through us like wet tissue.”
“Tell Amy to stall her and I’ll catch up. Get me the location.” Having something to do broke through the freeze that had settled on Shadow, and he was able to start thinking about anything but Star trapped in a GUN base like he’d been. He couldn’t get lost in the horror of imagining her in stasis, trapped in the same nightmare he’d endured for fifty years where he kept replaying the raid on the ARK. Or worse… what if she’d been awake? Alone for that long, without any of the people who’d loved her.
“On it.”
Shadow hung up and shook his head so hard his quills rattled. Get it together. She’s alive, I’ve got to find her.
Star was alive. Nothing else mattered, as long as she was alive. He could find her, fix everything else as long as she was still breathing. He’d been grieving her and Maria so long that the idea of seeing her made him light headed.
She’s alive. She’s alive. She’s still alive.
He felt like he was swimming through syrup, finding a place to park his bike where it wouldn’t be disturbed before taking off towards Mystic Ruins. He’d redirect when Rouge sent the location where Amy was going, but he couldn’t sit still. Not when everything was upended all over again, but maybe in a better way. Somewhere at the end of this run was Star, his Star, and for the first time since he’d woken up on Prison Island he had a little glimmer of hope. Star was alive, his future no longer felt like a prison sentence of watching everyone he might ever come to know die of old age while he kept existing.
Whatever she was doing with the Emeralds, they would work out. Everything could be fixed.
Star was alive!

Good morning!  I hope you slept well and feel rested?  Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in Blue Towelling Robe No. 1, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.
Welcome to the working week although, for those of you working in the NHS, welcome to just another day.
Who didn’t have a good time over the weekend?  With this weather, it’s impossible not to feel happy (and a bit frisky!)  This week, we are promised even warmer weather!  Heaven help me!
Many thanks to everyone that listened to ‘The A-Z Of Mi-Soul Music’: The Letter D (Part Seven), which was a brilliant show, if I say so myself.  Go to my MixCloud page and hear for yourself?  Next week: Part Eight.  Still more amazing D artists to play you!
Straight after the show, I caught some trains down to see Lady Wesker, and we enjoyed 24 hours with her.  I slept very well on Saturday night.  I always do at her place.  Which meant, when I woke up, I was ready for my walk down to the sea front.  Brighton & Hove promenade was full of walkers, runners and skaters, and there were swimmers and sailboarders in the sea.  Summer doesn’t start until late June but we are blessed with this very sociable weather.
If you’re coming down to The White Lion next Sunday, please join The Trouble and I for dinner.  My set is at 7.15, so we’re probably going to order from Lisa’s Kitchen beforehand.  (Lisa’s Kitchen operates INSIDE The White Lion!)  If you’ve never tried the food before (and you like Caribbean cuisine), we recommend it!
I am extremely grateful and very humbled by Five-Star Review No. 5 from The Divine Donna Maria Kassim.  I will post her words on here when Amazon post her words on Amazon.  We haven’t known each other that long but Donna understands every aspect of my life and my personality (family, politics, art, music, culture, love, passion), so she was able to read and appreciate every page and, when you read her review, her insight will impress you.
We’re currently watching ‘A Man On The Inside’ on Netflix starring Ted Danson, which is absolutely beautiful.
Have a marvellous and momentous Monday.  I love you all.

SURFER.BMF: A bikini-clad woman windsurfing, leaning hard to her left as she powers through a wave. The sailboard’s name—“Dude”—appears in red lettering, which, along with the bikini, conveys the impression that the woman is windsurfing at her leisure, that she is out having fun. Nothing could be further from the truth. The woman is an esteemed Professor of Liminalogy at an Ivy League school, and she is racing for her life. If the wind holds and the surf doesn’t fight her, she may just escape. From the enormous Kona crab, two stories tall, thrashing through the water after her.

This is what it's about:
When my parents got a house in the late 60s, I think their mortgage was $25,000 and they had an interest rate of under 5%.
My father worked at General Electric as a machinist, and worked piecework wages at first. My mother was a secretary. And my father made enough money that my mother could take a couple years between jobs when they'd inevitably lay her off because corporations in the 70s and 80s were as much bastards as they are today.
They had more than two cars, they had a sailboat, my dad bought various things he never used again like a surf sailboard. We weren't rich by any stretch of the imagination. But we were comfortable.
I don't have that. I have a van that's been broken for two years and that I'll likely eventually trade in for a new used car when I pay off enough debts to be able to get a car. The only reason I have a house is my grandparents died and I bought my uncle's half, and while my mortgage payments are lower than what a number of folks pay for rent in the city, I struggle to make ends meet. I lost my job nearly three years ago and drained my retirement savings in post-Covid America and was damn lucky to get a new job at the Post Office. And I'll be working there for the rest of my life, no doubt.
My cabinet has a bunch of mugs that are between 20 and 50 years old. I have a bunch of old dishes and silverware. All of my furniture is second-hand, much of it inherited from my grandparents or given to me by relatives.
I have had it easy compared to many in Gen Z. I am struggling to make ends meet, struggling easily as much as my parents did early in their life together and definitely far more than they were even after ten years together.
I've a cousin (first cousin, once removed - the eldest son of a cousin my age) who just graduated from college and they are struggling to find a job and living in an apartment with four other guys. This is the face of America's new youth - multiple roommates to afford a place to live. Oh, and they had it easy because their family were alumni of the college they went to. I don't know, maybe one of my cousins-once-removed will inherit this house once I die. And that assumes that the Trumps of the world don't seize all the property.
You can live off of raman and multivitamins and never have any "luxuries" in your life and squirrel away every dollar you ever make and then have it all sucked away with one illness or accident that your boss will insist happened on your time and refuse you workman's comp or the like.
I want to indulge in fun things. I want Millennials and Gen Zers and the new generation coming up to be able to indulge in fun things. I want billionaires to pay far more than they are, they can fucking afford it, if I were a billionaire I'd want to be paying far more because I could afford it, so that those who come after me can indulge and play and be human.
Is that truly too much to ask?
When I grow up I wanna be upper middle class.
