i'm kind of late to this but i just finished reading the scholomance trilogy by naomi novik and i feel like it is such an underrated urban fantasy?? taking the chosen one trope and turning it on its head with a fmc who has been prophesied to bring death and destruction, who is imbued with terrible power, but cannot even properly use said power to solve any of her obstacles because it would obliterate them and her soul. it takes a tired trope and the idea of an 'overpowered mary sue' and throws it back in your face by showing how all the power and destiny in the world is useless against a system filled with corruption that has burdened you with an easy way out (evil/destructive magic) that you can't take so now you have to work twice as hard as everyone else just to do simple, constructive spells instead of flicking your wrist and being done with it.

finished reading the golden enclaves and idk if this is a hot take but i feel like it had better exploration of the importance of communal unity and the necessity of societal change than like 99% of books that people like to classify as hopepunk these days simply for not just being like "working together is so good, i love community, together we can accomplish so much and change the world for the better <3" and was instead like "yeah, this work is going to be really fucking hard. it's going to suck, and it's going to be unpleasant, and people are going to hate you for doing it. and maybe you'll feel like giving up because it feels like too much, and being complacent and just going along with the status quo would be easiest. but you still need to do it, because it's what needs to be done, and eventually the world will be better for it."

Meet Agency, everyone.

Design notes and thoughts under the cut.

You'll notice, that is a tiefling virtue name right there. A traveler by nature, he is someone who highly values freedom, and people and things having the freedom to do as they'd like in life.

He is a bard, however in battle he does not play a traditional instrument. Instead, he has a music box (it's magic, so it's a bit funky) of which he personally enchanted/made. He does compose music, but it's all rather experimental, playing with different music styles and instruments. (Not exactly something easy to bring into battle.)

He's rather cagey about how the music box works, but it seems to be a collection of different music he's come across in his travels. How he changes the songs and how it's been enchanted? He refuses to say. Emotionally, it's the equivalent of someone bringing their playlist to battle. He is dancing to the music in battle.

A chosen of Eilistraee, he was a strategic pick from her done to make a point to both her brother (Not a Drow and a Complete outsider to her main communities) and her followers (He is a man completely uninterested in humoring drow gender politics, and he barely humors her church despite becoming rather involved in it) He's not... aware of this.

Agency: I am… A little under the impression I am being used as a pawn for a greater scheme Enclave: Oh good. You figured out how this works organically. Agency: Does that… Bother you? Enclave: Ah. No. If we must use this analogy, I made myself into a pawn for this game long before you were born. Agency: Hmmm…

Overall, he's a chosen that seems to have one foot in the door at times. He's here, he has a hand from the deck. But he's maybe not as fully dedicated as he at first seems, and doesn't seem entirely aware of all the cards at play. Despite this, he does genuinely like Eilistraee. He doing a lot to humoring her. She loves that he's willing to go all out on thematically fitting to her ("I honestly used to dress up in florals more, but she really seems to enjoy the star theming. And I do look rather good in blue")

Regardless of what he does and doesn't know, and how dedicated to it he is, this is a role he agreed to take on knowing there would be some... difficulties. Especially given the time he came into the picture. (He is another character introduced at the most modern point of the story.)

A lot of his shape language is meant to be somewhat devious seeming. Anime villian shape language. He has a lot of points and angles, but rather pretty features. His horns are meant to mimic crescent moons, and together come to create a full one.

Personality wise, he is unironically just like. A well meaning man with no bait and switch. He CAN be a little dramatic, as he's a theater kid at heart. But he has a very gentle soul. Contrasted with the fact that he does just love a good fight.

I know the Fallout TV show wanted to have a cool bombs dropping moment/scene but in all likelihood the West Coast would’ve had advanced warning before the bombs dropped or they would’ve dropped around 6 am bc on the East Coast they dropped at 9:40 something.

The people at the birthday party in the show are watching the news on tv and listening to it on the radio so it’s not like everyone at the birthday party was just tuned out and they didn’t realize they were getting advanced warning, there was no warning at all even though we know the bombs dropped on the East Coast first. Plus, there’s sirens all over the city that would have gone off even if the ppl weren’t listening to the news. I feel like that’s one inconsistency that the show had with the games that is not talked about as much.

We know that the bombs hit the East Coast first around 9:40 which would have been 5:40 West Coast time so why would they drop during this party which seems to be taking place in the middle of the day or at least late morning and why would the news station and the radio which were both talking about national news not have been warning people about the bombs actively dropping on the other side of the country? It’s a total lore dismissal of the games.

Also Vault Tec received an early warning before the citizens of America knew about the bombs dropping. It’s mentioned in the Vault 111 terminal they got less of a warning than they thought they would but wouldn’t Barbara Howard, one of the higher-ups at Vault Tec, get that warning and be blowing up the phone of the person whose kid’s birthday party it was? There’s a possibility that she didn’t have time but I don’t know, she tried so fucking hard for years to get her family together in a “management” vault. It doesn’t seem like she’d give up right at the last moment. We still don’t know what happened to her or Janey so I guess we’ll see in season 2.

After a lot of starting projects without finishing them, i finally did it. My cadre fireblade Shas'el Bork'an Shir'var (Or Noble Swiftwind for short). Really happy with the way she turned out ^^

THE TIMING AND AMOUNTS MAKE SENSE

And the magic of it makes sense too: the mawmouths pay the manna debt forever after by their eternal suffering or something, yeah? But once they die... The enclave goes into forfeiture.

El was foretold to destroy the enclaves of the world, bringing death and destruction.

Now she CAN and it'll be GOOD and FINE and AWESOME!!

She kills mawmouths.

The enclaves are destabilized.

She makes Golden Stone enclaves instead to replace the ones made from malia.

Also, considering the way this tends to go, she'll probably come to the same conclusion about the real cause of the enclaves falling in the next few paragraphs. But I had to pause my audiobook and share this immediately :OOO :DD

It's crazy that since I stopped saying I was monogamous that poly tgirls will now acknowledge to me that poly is basically the default. This might be a slightly nebulous one but: If Enclave had the opportunity to speak 'directly' to Lolth in the way she does Vhaeraun, how do you reckon that would go? Would something like that even happen?

So. I had some thoughts with this question.

It would depend on the period of her life she's in.

Enclave "<200" has a much different personality than Enclave after she joins Vhaeraun's church, because the kind of people that occupy his church (And frankly, the kind of god HE is) heavily influences the person she becomes (And there-for, the type of person to talk to divinity with that much audacity.)

But also, I don't think Enclave is stupid. Talking to Vhaeraun like she does is calculated (In that she knows it's something he finds funny.) Compared to Lolth who wants control and to be feared.

AND If she had stuck with Lolth and stayed a Priestess of Lolth? She wouldn't have ended up with the kind of personality that allowed her to feel emboldened enough to speak to divinity like that at all. Honestly, my overarching thought about the person she'd become if she stayed with Lolth is "This is a woman who would have ended up dead/cannibalized by the system she serves." This is someone that drow society is designed to fail, y'know? She doesn't LIKE unpredictability and chaos, she wants order. And a very nice list of things she can complete.

However, if we're talking Enclave at like. 500. As she is now in the current, as a cleric of Vhaeraun, Post-Everything? Yeah she has nothing to lose. She'd get smited by the spider god, she's not winning that fight. But she'd cuss her out. She doesn't have to be on good terms with her.

It's so hard to explain to my partner, the one who loves me the most, why I feel so much guilt for not abandoning all of the trappings of life in society (job, home, society, voting in elections etc) to become an anarchist living a life as independent from society as possible. This is my main OCD fixation and has been for about a decade, this is the thing I feel the most panic about in my lowest moments and where my mind spirals. I can use tumblr to trigger myself endlessly, if I'm in that place mentally, using the blogs of people who present themselves as living this way, untouched by the impurities of living life as most of us do, the way we interact with corporations and vote for imperfect politicians. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be apart from that, living surrounded by people so radical and pure, I tell myself, and then tell myself i would be immediately rejected.

In my healthiest moments I focus on living my life as it really is, in society as it exists today. The people around me who I sometimes agree with, sometimes disagree with: my colleagues, my family, my lgbtq social group (when I still had it), and above all, my friends, who I love and also disagree with on some things. Practicing healthy relationships without absolutism has been very important to me. (The period when this website was spreading the idea that in order to be a good and moral person you must immediately cut out people in your life the minute they do the tiniest thing wrong was very damaging to me.) Engaging in activism, and just ignoring the fact that tumblr anarchists would hate all of it for not being enough, has been maybe the most valuable thing of all.

So why can't I see that sometimes?
