Pragya Singh Thakur (born 2 February 1970), better known as Sadhvi Pragya, is an Indian politician and Member of Parliament representing Bhopal and belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. During her college days, she was an active member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and later joined various affiliate organisations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
She is an accused in the 2008 Malegaon bombings where 10 people were killed and 82 more were injured. She was arrested on terror charges after her bike was found to be used in the bomb blast. She is currently under trial for multiple charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In 2017 she was granted bail on health grounds following the dropping of some of the serious charges by the National Investigation Agency.[3][4]
Thakur contested the 2019 Indian general election from Bhopal constituency, running against Digvijaya Singh of the Indian National Congress, the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.[1] She won her debut contest by a margin of 364,822 votes.[5] According to political scientist Christophe Jaffrelot, she has become the "symbol" of the 2019 election, in which nebulous fringe elements of the Hindutva ideology have been mainstreamised.[6]
On 21 November 2019 Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur was made a part of the 21-member parliamentary consultative committee on defence, which is headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. After her comment in parliament, where she called Nathuram Godse (Gandhi's assassin) a patriot, she was criticised by opposition party members. On 28 November, she was removed from the committee on defence as well as BJP parliamentary party meetings.
Controversies
In December 2020, while addressing a gathering of Kshatriya Mahasabha she made a controversial remark. Thakur said that Brahmins don't feel bad when called Brahmin, so do Kshatriyas and Vaishyas. But Shudras do not like to be called as Shudra because of ignorance, they are "unable to understand".[39][40]

LS Election| After a month, PM Modi will become ex-PM: Asaduddin Owaisi
AURANGABAD: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that only one month is left for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to become an ex-Prime Minister. He slammed PM Modi and BJP for fielding Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur as Lok Sabha candidate from Bhopal. "Insha Allah only one month is left and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to become ex-Prime Minister," said Owaisi while addressing a public rally at Aurangabad. "At every place Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his useless speeches has been reiterating that security issue has been resolved, terrorism has been controlled, but I ask the PM, BJP and NDA - which also includes Shiv Sena - why have they given a ticket to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur who allegedly planted a bomb near a mosque in Malegaon killing 6 innocent people and injuring hundreds," said Owaisi. "Is this the proof of fight against terrorism? To give party ticket to someone who has charges of terrorism against her?" asked Owaisi. Pragya Thakur is among the seven accused facing trial in Malegaon blast case. Six people were killed and a dozen others were injured after a bomb placed on a motorcycle exploded in Maharashtra's Malegaon on September 29, 2008. Owaisi further slammed the Prime Minister for Sadhvi's controversial statements on former Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare. "How will the PM ask for votes from the people of Mumbai after Sadhvi Pragya said that Hemant Karkare died because of her curse. Karkare laid down his life fighting the demon Ajmal Kasab and other terrorists from Pakistan. He has not seen who is Hindu and who is Muslim but laid down his life for Hindustan," said Owaisi adding that the "Prime Minister should now break his silence". In a controversial remark, Sadhvi Pragya had said: "I called Hemant Karkare and asked him to let me go if there is no evidence (against me). He (Karkare) said that he will bring evidence but will not leave me. I told him -- You will be ruined." Karkare was killed along with two other senior police officers while fighting terrorists during the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai in November 2008. BJP was quick to distance itself from Sadhvi Pragya's statement. The party has fielded her to contest Lok Sabha election against Congress leader Digvijaya Singh from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. via Today Bharat Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing his first press conference on Thursday, said that his government would return back to power with full majority. "This is happening after a long time that a government which won with full majority would come back with a full majority," Modi said. PM Modi said his piece but didn't take any direct question from the reporters, directing them to his party president Amit Shah. Lauding the people and country, Modi said that India had impressed all with its vibrant and diverse democracy that could sustain the worldrsquo;s largest democratic exercise without a blink. ldquo;The last time, in 2014, the Indian Premier League was sent abroad because it clashed with the elections. But during these elections, the elections continued through the IPL, Ramzan, Ram Navami, and even childrenrsquo;s exams,rdquo; the Prime Minister said at a press conference held to mark the end of the campaign. Taking a dig at the Congress, Modi said that a casualty happened on this day five years ago. Referring to the results of 2014 elections which were announced on May 16, 2014, Modi said those who used to bet on the Congress in "Satta Bazaar" had lost after the results. PM Modi said that these elections could be used as a good case study for the student of politics and psephologists. Modi said that all the schemes of his government have been well thought out. He said that during his election campaign none of his rally was cancelled. He also said that the weather was very conducive during the campaign. Earlier, addressing the press conference, Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah had called the campaign trail as 'successful and victorious'. Shah recapped the last five year rule of the NDA government, stating the people of India had accepted the 'Narendra Modi experiment'. He said the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) monitored all 133 projects in the last five years, also touting the fact that the BJP had been able to form several state governments since 2014. "The 50 crore poor are under consideration. We have worked for farmers, Dalits and women. We have given you a corruption free, inflation-controlled government. Modi hai toh mumkin hai," Shah said. Shah accused the Trinamool Congress of violence stating that 80 BJP workers have lost their lives in West Bengal. He also urged the media to question the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for the violence. When asked about the candidature of Sadhvi Pragya, Shah said that she is contesting against the fictitious charges of earlier government to malign Hinduism by quoting the term "Hindu terror". Referring to the controversial statements made by the BJP leaders Sadhvi Pragya, Anant Kumar Hegde and Nalin Kateel, Shah said, "They have have been issued a show-cause notice for their remarks on Nathuram Godse. They have to reply in 10 days. The disciplinary committee of the party shall take a call on this." Earlier, the BJP had disassociated itself from their remarks. Answering a question on the corruptions charges levelled by the Congress presidentnbsp; on the Rafale deal, Shah said that the deal was clean and corruption-free. Shah also said that if Rahul Gandhi had a credible information about corruption in the deal, he should have informed the Supreme Court when the case was being heard. Stating the corruption charges as baseless, Shah said that the apex court has given a clean chit and the Defence Minister has given a full statement in the Parliament. Friday was the last day of the election campaign. The last phase of the seven phased election will be held on May 19. The result shall be declared on May 23. nbsp;
