Postcards from Snagglepuss: Top Cat's Brooklyn Roads
So I decide, for some reason as hath eluded me in the Times Square snow following a rather hospitable chat with Edward Montague, former Shakespearean star reduced to doing a saccharine "feel-good" moralistic sap by name of Uncle Goodheart, to proceed to Brooklyn. Wherever that is. Oh yes; it's across the East River via the Manhattan or Brooklyn bridges ... and at any rate, snow can't help but keep on falling crossing the Manhattan Bridge, which is probably the more direct into Brooklyn from Times Square.
And for all the humour long directed at Brooklyn, you don't want to needlessly feel unnerved; after all, Brooklyn is a part of New York, but still seems to act like it's a sui generis within New York. Yet you want to look for the former lodgings of a certain Top Cat and his crew, which were said to be in some part of Flatbush--or is it "Flatboish," to use the stereotypical pronunciation of the neighbourhood designed for comedic effect?
At any rate, pass by Barclays Centre, close to the Long Island Rail Road's Atlantic Terminal--practically across the way, even--wondering if maybe The Banana Splits could do well playing in one-horse small towns these days, playing only on 48 hours' notice to see if people were still recognising the quartet. And circling Grand Army Plaza, still unable to believe just how chic Brooklyn seems to have become of late.
And whether this "new" Brooklyn may have somehow eradicated TC's old quarters, in an alleyway somewhere in Flatbush close to Prospect Park and Erasmus Hall High School ... and somewhere along Flatbush Avenue, yours truly chances on a small-time bodega for a microwave burrito, some New York-style cream soda, and maybe a lottery ticket. Only to come across--
"Uh--Snagglepuss?!"
"Is that you, TC?"
"How did you get to wind up in Brooklyn in the first place? In this snow, even?"
"Just blame wanderlust." Still, I get myself a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda, classic New York flavour if ever there was one, rivalled only by a Sabrett hot dog from a street cart in season, even if slightly watery from the boiling water. TC gets himself some coffee and a danish, and, as the immortal Damon Runyon would have put it, the scene is as follows:
"Snagglepuss," says TC, "you old charmer you, I have to admit that you can still be so erudite, so whimsical besides, all this time."
"And TC--if I may call you that," saith I, "you still have that density of wit."
"Even if, for the sake of our health, crew and myself moved out west a few years back, resettling in Hollywood--"
"With some time on Catalina Island, I understand."
"Is it any wonder 'cat' is the first name in Catalina?"
"Go figure."
And sensing that the snow falling outside could be of the sort that could make things a little trying getting out and about on the overnight, even for such going home from whatever's playing at Barclay Center, the bodega's owner suggests maybe finding a motel (yes, there are a few of those in Brooklyn, if you know where to look) to stay the night. And TC agrees. But not before giving me the name of a diner for to have breakfast in the morning, somewhere near "downtown" (as in Fulton Street).... and so I find this particular motor inn of Brooklyn, close to the Verranzano-Narrows Bridge, and it was just my dumb luck that I had one of the last three rooms available. At least it was comfortable, and with too many unwatchable choices on TV, even in New York, it was likely time to call it a night anyway.

six days in the concrete jungle
2017 ☁️
After a few days off in the bay to run some errands, we hoped in a mid-day flight to NYC. Watched the Golden State win the finals on the in-flight live TV.
–5 hours later–
As soon as we got to JFK, we decided to rent a car to drive to Buffalo NY to see the beauty of Niagara Falls and boy that sleepless 6 hours drive didn't disappoint.
Pro tips:
1. Driving through the NY state is probably the best thing you can do during Spring, make sure to experience the pit stops along the way.
2. Ride the Maid of the Mist to make the most of your Niagara Falls experience. You get to be in two different countries at one spot since half of the falls resides in Canada.
3. Get yourself a Tim Hortons coffee in Buffalo's pit stops! The closest you could get to Canada's best coffee without crossing the border.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We just stayed there til' lunch and drive through the scenic sights of NY state. It was Spring so just imagine how beautiful the foliage are, it was SURREAL.
As soon as we got back to Manhattan, we settled in to our hotel which is just across the Penn Station. I believe it was in the Garment District, but I mean look at the view of my room– priceless.
Pro tip:
Get a hotel/apartment that's near the Penn station so you can take subways around the city. It's accessible going to an from the airport even to Jersey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a much needed nap, we had to make sulit the time so we went to the spots near our hotel. Walked through Herald Square, Times Square and Radio City Music Hall. Got some Five Guys for early dinner before we hopped in a subway train to the Financial District to visit the 9/11 Memorial and the Oculus.
It was such a solemn experience seeing stillness on that memorial water fall and the names engraved. I'll probably be back when I get the strength to go inside the museum– the Oculus mall was beautiful though.
Pro tips:
1. Manhattan is a walking city so you can actually cover a few spots just by strolling Broadway st. Make sure to visit Macy's because they have crazy sales.
2. Times Square is just so crowded and full of sketchy people in costumes so be alert. All food establishments within the area are also full most of the time so I recommend just go through 5th ave. to eat or somewhere in Midtown.
3. They say the subway in NY is very chaotic and believe me IT IS. As a kebs person, just mind your own business and DGAF with those people who always make a scene to get money. Also, the rat problem and the stink in NY sub isn't a joke so good luck.
4. Visit the 9/11 memorial to pay respect, its such a humbling experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After feeling so overwhelmed, we just decided to head back to our hotel. Just got a Sabrett then dozed off like a baby. Btw if its your first time in NY, let me just warn you how loud this city is. I think I heard sirens alarming all night tbh. So its really a city that doesn't sleep, even the rats on the subway LOL
Proof of existence– and did I really eat that Sabrett if I didn't took a photo??!
Pro tips:
1. I recommend the halal food carts than hotdogs tbh. Don't buy the nuts! Way more cheaper in the stores for the quantity.
2. Everything in Manhattan CVS/Target is expensive, well in general since city taxes are often higher so you've been warned.

Hot Diggity Dog
Tumblr media
Also known as a frankfurter or wiener, the hot dog's origin is claimed by the city of Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, and also by a butcher living in Coburg, Germany., who traveled to Frankfurt to promote his new product, sometime in the late 1600s. Either way, German immigrants brought not only the sausage with them in the 1800s, but also their beloved dachshund dogs, and the name probably began as a joke about the small, long, thin dogs.
Food historians at Yale University say the word "hot dog" began appearing in college magazines back in the 1890s. when students started calling wagons outside their dormitories selling hot sausages as "dog wagons." It didn't take long for the word "dog" to become "hot dog." German immigrants first sold them from push carts in New York City's Bowery in the 1860s. Another story recounts a German butcher, Charles Feltman, in 1871 hawked sausages with milk rolls from his stand on Coney Island, starting a trend to this day of the famous "Coney Dog," (usually topped with a savory meat sauce). The bun made its debut at the Colombian Exposition a few years later where visitors gobbled them down in large quantities. Vendors had a hit on their hands, and we can thank Germans for their culinary contribution.
These 2016 statistics bear out the huge demand and popularity; Los Angeles residents consume more hot dogs than any other city (more than 36 million pounds), beating out New York and Philadelphia. Dodger fans alone consumed 2.6 million in 2016 the birthplace of the Dodger Dog, a 10 inch pork wiener wrapped in a steamed bun sold at Dodger Stadium; across the country major league fans enjoyed 19.4 million during the 2016 season;
+On Independence Day (July 4th) Americans enjoy 150 million hot dogs, enough to stretch from to D.C. to L.A. more than five times;
+During peak season, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion; that's 818 consumed every second.
+Top hot dog consuming cities are all home to a major league baseball team (no surprise there):
Los Angeles Chicago New York Philadelphia Boston Phoenix Atlanta Detroit Washington, DC Tampa
+Nathan's - started in 1916 by a Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker selling a 5 center from his stand on Coney Island, they still dominate NYC and are famous for their July 4th eating contest; reigning men's champion again in 2018, Joey Chestnut (with a record 74 in 10 minutes) and Miki Sudo (women's) at 37 (burp);
+Wienerschnitzel - an American fast food chain founded in 1961, also known as the World's Largest Hot Dog Chain 358 locations;
+Chicago style - who doesn't know what this is: hot dog, poppy seed bun, Vienna wiener, mustard, tomato wedges, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, sport peppers and a dash of celery salt, don't even mention the "k" word (ketchup);
Most popular retail brands:
+Nathan's Famous Skinless Beef Franks (New Yorkers will settle for nothing less) +Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners (no surprise here) +Hebrew National 97% Fat Free Beef Franks (fewer additives and fillers) +Sabrett Skinless Beef Frankfurters (who?) +Ball Park Beef Franks (always popular)
Costco - In 2015, Costco food courts sold 128 million hot dogs; at $1.50 (includes drink) on average, up from 100 million a year earlier;
Retail sales - 1 billion pounds were sold at retail stores. That number represents more than $2.4 billion in retail sales.
+Chicago's O'Hare Airport sells six times more hot dogs than Los Angeles and LaGuardia Airport combined which clocks in at 725,000; travelers hope for a flight delay so they can nosh on those dogs;
Well, statistics don't lie.Americans love their hot dogs, and they have their own unique ways of preparing and enjoying them. Whether you choose sauerkraut, chili, cheese, mustard, relish, onions, ketchup or all of the above, nothing satisfies quite like a hot dog. Eaten on the run, wolfed down from a street vendor or savored at a backyard barbecue, they are pure American and anyone can enjoy them anywhere, anytime. So pile on the condiments and chow down.

I sometimes wonder what it would take for a person to stoop down and pick up a coin these days. I know pennies don't stand much of a chance. Nickels might still have a shot, but only if nobody's looking. Dimes are small and harder to see. It's embarrassing to stoop down for what you think is a dime and then, have to pretend to be tying your shoe when you realize it's only a piece of foil. I guess I'd have to say that quarters offer the best odds of getting picked up by just about everyone. It wasn't always so.
In the Fifties even pennies had value. In Sam's Candy Store stood a case with sliding glass doors, where penny candies were displayed... marshmallow peanuts, wax lips, licorice pipes, Mary Janes, candy cigarettes, wax bottles filled with sugary liquid, Bazooka Bubble Gum, those long paper strips with rows of colored candy dots and so many others. We would stand there trying to decide how to invest our penny, while Sam watched us like a hawk. Gum ball and peanut vending machines also took pennies, and they also looked very cool in "penny loafers" if you were lucky enough to own a pair.
A nickel was more of a middle-class investment. It would buy any one of fifty candy bars like Three Musketeers, Clark Bar, Baby Ruth, or Mounds...all about twice the size they are today. Five cents got you a whole pack of baseball cards that smelled forever like the bubble gum they were packed with. You could spring for a fountain Coke or a Lime Rickey, a Dixie Cup Ice Cream with pictures of celebrities on the inside lid. Down in the subway, before they had to be removed due to vandalism, were soda vending machines that dispensed five flavors at the push of a button. If you were lucky, the cup would drop down before the seltzer and flavored syrup came out.
John D. Rockefeller used to give shiny new dimes to kids because he knew their value in "boy currency". For a dime you got any of the dozens of colorful comic books arrayed on Sam’s shelves, the ice cream of your choice from the Bungalow Bar truck, a shoe shine at my grandfather’s store , a 3-pack of Yankee Doodles, a Mission pineapple soda ice cold from the red ice chest, a ride on the subway, or a phone call in one of those great old wooden phone booths. You could dine on a Sabrett's Hot Dog, one of Mom's Knishes hot off the cart, and for dessert, shaved ices with your choice of flavored syrups.
The most precious coin was the elusive quarter. There was a subway grating outside the pool room on Fulton Street. Sometimes one of the guys would spot a quarter down the grating where it beckoned from twenty feet below street level. We swung into action. Somebody would borrow a padlock from home. We would shinny under a car to get a gob of axle grease to coat the bottom of the padlock. Then, after tying a length of string to the top of the padlock, we would go fishing for the quarter in the subway grate. It was hard and dirty work, but success meant candy bars for everyone.
Did we feel sorry for ourselves for being so poor that we had to resort to such tactics for a lousy candy bar? Never. We were having too much fun. We knew how to amuse ourselves without bothering an adult to entertain us. I loved being a kid in 1950s Brooklyn. For my money, there was no better childhood anywhere.

The 5 Things I Always Buy When I Go Antiquing — Fall Weekend Trips
My husband and I spend a lot of time in Upstate New York, which happens to be lousy with antique shops. I'd argue that there are more antique shops than apple orchards, breweries, and bespoke pottery shops — combined. I'm certainly not complaining about this because we love to go antiquing. I have to drag my husband into a Target, but he's always down to seek out new-to-us antique stores and very old stuff.
He tends to be on the lookout for windsor chairs, old boxes, and anything we've never seen before. I look for anything and everything. We've bought some pretty random stuff: cans of emergency drinking water, a galvanized Sabrett hot dog bin, and a cart from an old paper factory that we use as a bar cart. We go into a store with no real plan, but there are five things we almost always buy when we see them.

Despite not having a regular location — Bessie’s daily whereabouts must be tracked online — Milk Truck has become a fixture in the New York street food scene thanks to its fiercely loyal following. Thanks to Big Red, Red Hook Lobster Pound’s lobster shack on wheels, they only need to walk to the curb. Rolls come Maine-style, served cold with mayo, or Connecticut-style, served warm with butter and lemon, each stuffed with a quarter pound of fresh Maine lobster. Despite a price tag high that’s high for the streets — $16 per roll at the time of writing — the truck still sells between 300-400 rolls every two hours. Lines form before the tiny street stall as early as 11 a.m. each Saturday for lumpia, crispy, Filipino-inspired spring rolls. Each roll is made using locally sourced ground pork, roasted duck or truffled adobo mushrooms, hand-rolled and then deep-fried. Unlike regular street food, Lumpia Shack’s plating is restaurant quality: the lumpia are arranged artfully on a tray, drizzled with homemade sauce and garnished with pea shoots and pickled vegetables. Named after the warm, salty water it’s soaked in, the hot frank is served in a soft bun (which sops up residual water) and then topped with ketchup, mustard, onions, relish and sauerkraut. It’s neither sophisticated nor gourmet, but it’s the quintessential New York food experience. Various locations Solber Pupusas Culinary heavyweights Anthony Bourdain, Marcus Samuelsson and Martha Stewart are all said to be fans of Vendy-winning Solber Pupusas, and it’s no wonder. Husband and wife owners Rafael and Reina Soler-Bermudez (“Solber” is a portmanteau of their last names) have been making the stuffed Salvadoran corn tortillas in their tiny mobile pupuseria for more than 15 years, selling more than 600 on a regular day. The signature platter comes loaded with two pupusas, tangy curtido, pickled jalapenos, tomato sauce and sour cream. Served on banana leaves with a tangy slaw, the Salvadoran tamales are also crowd favorites. What started out as a lone taco cart in SoHo in 2006 — one of New York’s first — has since grown into a fleet of carts across the city and a handful of brick-and-mortar locations. Its original SoHo cart remains its most popular location, still slinging soft corn tacos cradling slow-cooked chipotle pork, hearty bowls of jalapeno cheddar grits and burritos packed with beer-battered fish, beans, rice and Monterey Jack cheese. Though saltenas — crusty, empanada-like pastries filled with meat and vegetables –are easily its best-selling item, the chola slider is the real star here. The modern take on the humble sanduiche de chola comes stuffed with either pork or beef brisket and topped with hibiscus-pickled onions, carrots, kolla cheese and parsley. Every morning, locals file out of the subway and make a beeline for the nearest silver breakfast cart, whose narrow shelves are stocked high with bagels and pastries of every kind. Many pre-prepare their bagels for convenience, but most carts will make your bagel to order. Coffee, usually deli-quality, is served in small blue-and-white Anthora cups that have become as characteristic of New York as yellow cabs and dirty water dogs. Various locations
