Dark had never been a fan of such open skies.

Contracts were contracts, however, and the clean up from the incursions by Alexandria were lucrative enough, helped along by the generosity of the thankful Dawnservants to their allies.

And so she found herself in the plains of Xak Tural, trying to reach the next village by nightfall, while being pursued by a particularly aggressive and distressingly large seedkin someone else had referred to as a barreltender.

She supposed the name apt, given the thickness of the body and limbs.

Dark ground her teeth and urged Bandit onward as the massive sabotender tromped after them. They were gaining ground, but she wasn’t sure how persistent the thing would be. Both she and her chocobo were getting tired, and she needed a decent defensive position to fight from if it wouldn’t be deterred.

Bandit warked, and she looked forward to see what had her bird’s attention. They were nearing a series of buttes rising from the empty plains, like rocky tree trunks.

She would prefer a forest to weave through, but this would have to do. She pressed her legs to the ‘bo’s side and adjusted her grip on the reins.

With a burst of energy, Bandit zipped forward, and then pushed off, flying to the top of the first small escarpment. He landed hard, kwehing an apology.

Dark hopped off, giving him a pat. She took up her bow and looked down.

She belatedly wondered if sabotenders could climb.

Apparently not, as it and its herd of lesser seedkin swarming the base. A few tried to scramble and climb onto one another, but they were small and clumsy.

Dark took aim and loosed her first arrow, striking the barreltender in the head. It made a distressingly high screeching sound, rallying the others. She continued shooting, focusing primarily on the big one, until it finally fell.

The smaller ones seemed almost stunned, a few peeling off, but most continuing to meander around the base of the hill, directionless without their leader. She picked off a few more larger ones, and more dispersed.

By now the sun was low, and the temperature dropping. Dark sighed and turned to her napping chocobo. There were a few boulders up here she could use as she set up her camp, to block wind and provide some defense for anything else that might come swooping out of the sky.

Hopefully by morning the seedkin swarm would be gone. Bandit would be rested and they could fly a short ways, far enough to clear what remained and make it to that next town. And next time, she’d see about assigning someone better suited to a desert-like region to make these deliveries and check ins.

She had to admit, though, looking out over the valley, that it was a rather nice, unobstructed view from up here.
