I’m thinking about Weimar Germany. In many ways what happened with the rise of a certain very Bad Man and his very Bad political party were due to the violent negligence of the Weimar government. When your government is fucking up so bad, choosing to fuck with the working people SO much forever, people get complacent. They start looking at ANY change as acceptable.
That’s really the problem with Liberalism too. Just a complete acceptance of the status quo, a willing to go along with anything to avoid conflict. If the current political arrangement has no good option, people are far more willing to go along with the option that ensures change.
Obviously with terrible results.
The liberal opinion in all this (read: conservative) is of course that “it’s all very awful, but what are you gonna do about it?” It’s terrible, but we know that nothing can be done, of course. We’ll just have to vote extra hard next time! But of course we know that this does nothing, and what’s worse it strengthens “both” “parties.”
The reactionary opinion is that the sup court is useless, harmful, and makes decisions that are not representative of the bulk of Americans. Who here can say they would not prefer a jubilee — a forgiveness of all debts, for all people? So, if there is pressure to strike down the SupCo does that not strengthen the possibility of future reactionary, potentially Bad Party takeovers? On further reflection, I think yes. IF something like that were to happen, it would be shockingly reminiscent of the last flagging months of the Weimar government.
So what then is the option? I actually don’t know. As a person who dreams of a less-imperial future, in theory I should welcome the potential dissolution of the SupCo, but my fear of rising f-word tension gives me pause. We swore never again, but what does that really mean? I don’t think anyone in power will recognize the similarities in time. Or, rather, they will not care.

I don't think it's about installing a dictator.
I think it's the oligarchs trying to protect themselves.
Newspapers have 1st amendment protections, so there's very little a president can do against them. However, each of these individuals also own companies that aren't protected.
The SupCo has ruled that the President can weaponize the Attorney General however they want. If Trump wins, there's not a lot he can do against newspapers. But he can make people suffer by sending the AG after their other companies.
Bezos owns the WP. Trump could easily tear Amazon apart with the AG in retribution for whatever happens with the WP to punish Bezos.
They're hedging bets

THIS ISN’T REALLY ABOUT ANDY WARHOL…OR THE SUPREME COURT
There’s no accounting for taste.
I know you didn’t ask for my opinion, but I’m going to assert it anyway: Andy Warhol is a total sham. I realize his creative expressions presented something that previously hadn’t really existed, but that hardly constitutes artistic brilliance. Instead, I regard Andy Warhol as a cynical opportunist, a sourpuss oddball who’s artistic sensibilities essentially mirrored his own culinary tastes. Here’s a guy whose favorite foods were essentially bread and jam, and sweets and sweets and sweets.
That’s fine. Some people like football; some people like Lawrence Welk; some people like Andy Warhol. Rather than take this space to analyze his artistic relevance, however, there’s something else the mop-topped arriviste provokes. My distain for the dude has to do with a perception that he was contemptuous of the whole creative enterprise. The fact that he called his operation “The Factory“ is in itself a perfect expression. He pumped out confections for patrons who couldn’t tell the difference, for people who thought he was somehow hip by presenting Campbell soup cans.
Do 50 replications of a solarized publicity photograph of Marilyn Monroe — or an ordinary soup can —constitute art? Many culture critics and art historians think it does. I say, “Au contraire!” The original Marilyn image appearing in his…I suppose the word is “artwork”… isn’t even his own photograph! Certainly it’s fair to employ “fair use” and appropriate other creative works into one’s own—think of movies using familiar songs in their soundtracks to evoke precise feelings—but in this case, the image itself is the work, and the work isn’t really his. What rubs me wrong is the inherent cynicism underpinning the creative enterprise. I don’t mind angry art, I don’t mind sad art, I don’t mind disturbed art, or erotic art, or challenging pieces that ask me to pause and think. I don’t even mind “bad” art that I might choose to ignore. What bothers me are so-called artistic assertions that knowingly, consciously, conspicuously waste my time by pretending to be something more vital than they really are.
It’s worth noting here that The United States Supreme Court is about to offer an opinion relating to this subject basically any minute. A ruling is due in the case Warhol v. Goldsmith in the late spring of 2023. (SUPCO docket number 21-869.) In an ironic twist, the case itself describes the essential bones of what irks me about Warhol and those who emulate and celebrate him. At issue is whether the Warhol Foundation had a right to use a modified image of Prince captured by photographer Lynn Goldsmith beyond what she asserts was the term of an original license agreement. In many ways, the case provokes questions about what constitutes fair use of an image that’s already passed into public consciousness. Does an already published photo of a celebrity musician mean it’s fair game for anyone to adapt? Does that adaptation make it art? Does the original creator have a permanent influence on the original creation? No matter how this case resolves, it will have enormous influence on the creative firmament.
I don’t care about Andy Warhol, actually. This isn’t really about him or his soup cans or the pablum he pumped for the proletariat. It’s the proletariat penchant for sardonic irrelevance that has me exorcised.
Paraphrasing a classic, life moves quickly. When you wake up and you’re suddenly not as young as you used to be, you come to realize you’re on a train without any brakes. And guess what? The bridge is out, and we’re all heading straight for the ravine. What are you gonna do now?
That’s why I have limited patience for cynicism or triviality. Humor? Sure. I love to laugh, and good humor offers vital cultural circuit breakers. Whimsey and lightness? Show me something clever —not the same thing as humor, by the way— and I’m usually a happy man. But cynicism leaves me cold. Endless irony, the contemporary voice of the meme generation, eschews substance in favor of dismissive reductionism. Irony alone as a common theme erodes substance by investing energy and effort into the very act of trivializing something else. It neither spins new thread, nor weaves new tapestries from existing bolts.
To me that’s just like Warhol replicating photos of soup cans and calling it art.

AC TRACTION
The AC (alternating current) Drive, also known as Variable Frequency Drive, has been the standard in industry for many years. While it has been used in locomotives for over two decades (especially in Europe), it has only been recently that the price of the drives has allowed them to be used in most of the new diesel-electric locomotives in the United States. The AC drive works by converting the traction alternator output to DC (direct current) and reconverting it to a variable frequency AC which powers AC traction motors. Because AC motors operate at approximately the frequency of the current, the drives must adjust the frequency so that the motors can have a speed range of zero to maximum rpm.
AC vs DC traction motors which one? In engineering terms, every device, invention, or product comes with its merits and demerits. In the locomotive industry, the pivotal role of locomotive traction motors results in constant development in this technology. AC traction for locomotives is a major improvement over the old DC systems. The primary advantages of AC traction are adhesion levels up to 100% greater than DC and much higher reliability and reduced maintenance requirements of AC traction motors.
GE and EMD added AC traction to their mainline units and were then able to replace two older DC units with one new AC locomotive. Republic locomotive took a different approach and decided to make a lighter, less costly unit for industrial switching. The DC powered SW9/SW1200, produced in large quantities from 1951 to 1965 and used for heavy yard switching as well as branch line service, was taken as the performance standard. At 230,000 to 240,000 pounds these units are typically rated at about 40,000 pounds tractive effort continuous (somewhat higher intermittent but limited by traction motors and generators). The AC traction RX500 at 144,000 pounds and a conservative 35% adhesion level is rated at 50,400 pounds tractive effort continuous.
With AC traction, it is also important to consider braking. As with traction, braking is a function of weight on drivers. Therefore, when using standard friction braking (tread brakes) the braking capability of the locomotive (excluding train braking) is proportional to the locomotive weight. With AC traction, however, the braking can be much higher because the drive system in braking acts just like the drive does in traction thus eliminating wheel slip. The drive converts the motors to generating mode (dynamic braking) and the electricity produced is dissipated in the braking resistors. Thus the motors are slowing the locomotive without using the air brakes. Again, the adhesion levels are much higher so the locomotive can again be significantly lighter for the same amount of braking. The dynamic braking in AC traction locomotives also allows full braking down to zero speed, unlike DC dynamic braking.
All in all, the AC traction locomotive offers about twice the amount of adhesion as a DC unit. Therefore, a modern lightweight AC locomotive such as the RX500 can provide as much or more tractive effort than an old style DC unit like the SW1200 which weighs 60% more.
