“Let me out!! LET ME OUT!”

You cry out, banging on the heavy wooden door until your knuckles bruise, red marks leaving their traces on your soft skin. The only lightsource is the tiny cell window, sun shining brightly and illuminating thousands of dust specks, floating around you like your lost hopes. The grey cement walls got closer and closer, seconds ticking in your head like a clock.

This is it.

This is how you die.

Crushed to death like a bug, your ambitions never getting their chance to prove themselves. All that you ever wanted to achieve was an impossibility as you were slowly but surely pressed together in the ever shrinking room.

Salty tears roll down your cheek, a feeling of hopelessness washing over you as you turn your back against the door, sliding down to your feet, banging the back of your head lightly against the entrance.

You feel the rough walls hitting both sides of your forearms, a last ear deafening scream leaving your parted lips.

Until you woke up.

With a series of jerking motions you sit up, panting like you just ran a marathon, the pounding of your heart audible to you. Darkness swallowed you as the night progressed, you considering yourself lucky to find yourself in your comfortable bed, still in your room.

Only after minutes do you notice your wet cheeks, the tears not being limited to your dream world. You blink, your coated eyelashes weighing heavy on your eyelids as you wipe tears with the back of your hand. The shock from your dream didn’t reside, you now being too afraid to fall back on your plushy pillow, fearful of what horrible dreams awaited you on the other side.

You grab your phone from the nightstand, immediately being hit with a bright light causing you to squint and turn away momentarily.

You laugh lazily, the dream making sense as you feel yourself slipping back into a peaceful slumber, phone still in hand as the muscles in your face relax, jaw opening, your dream world once again inviting you for a dance.

The sun woke you up with it’s radiant rays shining in your face, the closed blinds barely able to withstand them. Your phone was lying on the floor face down, you must have dropped it while sleeping you thought before rubbing your eyes from any dirt and staring up at the ceiling.

Another day

You wish you could pull the covers over your head, get lost in your own mind and never deal with the outside world ever again. But you had to.

You picked up your phone from the dusty floor that hadn’t been cleaned for weeks, you simply didn’t have the motivation to do it. The bright phone screen awaked you, you blinked your eyes a couple of times to see clearer.

You couldn’t be bothered to call her back. She was only gonna nag at you for not calling back earlier, wondering what you’ve been up to now that you’ve been fired from your job as a receptionist at the local hotel. What were you gonna say? Drinking too much booze and crying yourself to sleep every night? You couldn’t, that would only hurt her.

Ignorance is bliss, as they say.

You got up, legs wobbling as you stumbled to the bathroom, head pounding from the amount of alcohol you consumed the night prior. Not with friends but alone, in your living room, in the one room apartment you no longer could afford.

Ice cold water splashed onto your sweaty face, that being the only hygiene you could muster today. You turned the tap off, grabbing a towel and wiping your face and looking deep into your own eyes.

That’s not me.

That’s not me looking back.

You poked your tongue out, hoping the figure in the mirror wouldn’t move and you could confirm your thoughts but alas the figure followed you. You felt crazy, it was as if you’ve died a long time ago but still saw everything that happened. You could stick your hand through a wall and it would disappear you thought, nothing was real. Not even you.

You entered your mess of a living room, seeing the wreck from yesterday night. Countless green glass bottles scattered on the table in front of the tv that was your only escape from reality. Blankets and pillows were thrown across the floor along with a box of tissues, your emotions bubbling up to the surface too often resulting in you crying and shaking on the floor, a feeling of fear washing over you late at night.

You felt alone.

But you weren’t.

Fuck, why were you so ungrateful? You had everything. A roof over your head, a family that loves you, friends, food on the table. Yet, even this couldn’t satisfy you. You blamed yourself for everything.

For your work firing you.

For your parents divorcing.

For your own pathetic life.

You shook your head as if you were shaking the negative thoughts out of your head, instead grabbing a couple of the empty bottles that were reeking with the scent of liquor and placing them on the kitchen counter. ‘Cleaning up’ in your eyes.

With a thump your back landed against the couch that swallowed you, engulfing you in a comforting embrace you got from no other person or object. This was your safe space you thought but not even your couch could save you from your intrusive reasonings. With a light click on the remote the tv screen lit up, your eyes still not used to the brightness since you’re always cooped up in your apartment where the blinds were always closed, another barrier between you and reality.

Nature documentaries, your favorite.

The calming male voice of the narrator being the only one you talked to during your lonely days. The animals could make you forget. They lived so freely, moving wherever they wanted without a care in the world, either swimming, hopping or flying. You wish you were born as another animal than human.

“The 52-hertz whale travels an astonishing 70 km a day but it’s voyage doesn’t bring social interactions. This whale is the loneliest whale in the world. It’s the only whale that is capable of emitting a whale call at such frequency, no other individuals communicating with the poor creature.”

You sat up in curiosity. It was a scream for help you thought. The whale needed help, it needed someone or something.

Just like you.

You sighed, watching the lonely whale on your tv screen, seeing it’s gracious movements despite its size. It did look lonely in that deep dark sea, wondering how it would be to fall into the abyss of water, swallowing you whole and erasing the life that once sparked your soul.

This was where you spent your entire days. The clock on the wall is ticking but the digits it displayed are oblivious to you. What did it matter if it was 5 pm or 1 am? You were still not gonna budge from your comforting seat on the couch. Drinking your feelings away no matter what time in the day.

This was you.

This was who you had become.

The sun started to set on the horizon, a delicate shade of light purple descending over it, covering the end of the world like the way a canopy covers the softness of a bed. You sigh, diverting your focus back on the tv screen after momentarily observing the life outside your window. Yet again, nature documentaries accompanied by the soft male voice, narrating every movement of the colibri that fluttered it’s wings at the speed of light on your screen in vivid colors.

You got that look in your eyes. That look of amazement which you now only had when looking at the beautiful colors of a exotic bird. You moved closer to the tv screen in the now dark living room, the sun setting at a fast pace. It reminded you of the many times your mom shouted at you to not sit so close to the screen, scaring you by saying that you’d get rectangular eyes.

Your childhood.

The only time you felt ease.

The only time your family was as one.

“y/n, what does your heart look like?” the therapist asked, scribbling mindlessly on a notepad.

“it’s a muscle that pumps blo-” you started but were quickly cut off.

“no, I mean what does your heart look like, how does it feel?”

You sighed, looking down at the grey marbled floor, your legs shaking in nervousness. You hesitated before speaking, scrambling in your mind to say something sensible before the words came pouring out of you.

“i-it looks like a house. A dark, empty house,,, but it’s comforting.”

Once again you heard the sound of a pencil writing incoherent sentences. Curious as to know what secrets were on that piece of A5-paper.

“is there anyone in the house with you?” the therapist inquired.

You shook your head before speaking.

“I don’t want to let anyone in, this is my safe space” you say, almost setting up an emotional barrier, not wanting to answer further questions.

The person sitting across from you hummed as you stared out the window behind them, the green ivy bushes already grown tall enough to cover half of the grimy window.

“is the house empty?” they asked to which you shook your head once again, avoiding the glassy-eyed stare of the therapist.

“no,,, there are dusty furniture covered in white cloths and-,,, and family photos in the drawers.”

“is it your family?”

You shook your head in disagreement.

“How did you end up here?”

You thought for a second, puffing out your cheeks, a habit of yours. You searched for a reason but not finding any.

“I just,,, was here one day.”

“The sun never shines here.” you added after a solid 30 seconds of silence.

You were stuck in that house.

The house that was once filled with happy memories of another family, you simply a ghost that was now trying to fit the broken pieces together, wanting desperately to see them smiling again.

Tears started forming in your eyes, a shiny gloss over your orbs.

But you never cried.

Not in front of others.

You thought often about that visit. Why your heart was an desolate house and why the words spilled out of you like a poisonous liquid.

You closed your eyes, the bright colors fluttering behind your eyelids as the comforting sounds of the woods blasted from the tv.

You wish you could be somewhere else.

Anywhere but here.

A single tear rolled down your cheek as a smile creeped up on your face, your butt against the floor as your knees were underneath your chin, your entire figure curled up into a small ball.

You sighed as your eyes fluttered open again. You were still here, in your apartment that smelled like nothing but alcohol and disappointment.

Firmly planting both your hands on the wooden floor you heaved yourself up with the intention of getting more tissues, the blue colored tissue box on the floor being as empty as others expectations of you.

But as you stood up the entire room started spinning, small specks of rainbow flashing by your eyes. You thought you stood up to quickly grabbing onto the wall for a second before collapsing against it, your entire body shaking. You cried louder, thinking you were about to pass out. Your hair stuck to your tear stained cheek as your puffy eyes closed once again.

What was happening?

The rain hit your unconscious body, your knees scraped from the concrete you lied on. You were soaked from head to toe, lying with your cheek against the ground in a puddle of rain. You woke up from your head pounding, your bloody knees only gaining your attention after you’ve looked around in a confused daze.

It was empty. An alleyway in the dark night. You found yourself panicked, anxiety bubbling inside of you. That’s when you saw it. A single street light above a red phone booth. You tried to stand up but fell over again as your legs could barely hold you up, now scraping your elbow against the gritty ground.

Crying out, you started shouting for help.

“HELP!! SOMEBODY HELP!”

You screamed at the top of your lungs, voice cracking as your tears started to look identical to the rain that was pouring over your cold, helpless body. Nobody came, your voice only echoing against the wall that the phone booth stood near to.

You got on all fours, crawling towards the light as pure pain shot through your body, small pebbles jabbing into the open wounds on your knees. You needed shield from the rain. Desperate huffs and groans escaping your parted lips as you dragged yourself through small puddles, the phonebooth seemingly getting further and further away from you. Looking through the soaked curtains that was your hair you were determined, this was life or death you thought as you continued to shout out for help, it appeared to be useless since the only other sound besides your own voice was the rain hitting the ground.

Shivering hands grabbed onto the corner of the crimson red phonebooth, the streetlight illuminating your teary eyes. You held onto that frigid and wet piece of metal as if you were holding onto a treasure.

As if you won a race.

As if you pleased your parents.

You looked up, dragging the inner side of your leg against the concrete, your pyjama pants wet to the bone. Desperately you got yourself together, your arms shaking as the rough pads of your hands met the ground, pushing yourself up into a standing position. You hissed at the pain in your knees as you grabbed onto the metal handle that opened the phonebooth, stepping inside.

The inside was surprisingly warm, as if someone had been there moments prior. A ripped piece of paper was taped on the glass pane to the right of the payphone, something that seemed like a phone number but could impossibly be since it wasn’t a full number.

You looked at the payphone and then back at the washed out paper, the edges of the note curling and stained with yellow. Only when you looked back at the phone again did you notice the keypad. To your surprise there was an “x” button. Your head felt heavy, deciding to lean it against the other side of the stuffy phone booth, your hot breath creating steam on the glass.

You wanted to wake up from this nightmare.

Your entire body ached, let alone the blood that was dripping down your leg. The rusty payphone connected to the actual phone, a black handle connected to the underside of the machinery by a coiled metal rope. You picked up the phone, putting it against your ear and groaned when you remembered that you needed coins in order for the payphone to work

You rubbed your eyes. Gold? You sighed loudly, your knees barely being able to hold your weary body any longer. Hesitant fingers pressed the number that was jot down on the lined note, pressing each key accordingly. You pressed the last x before you pressed the “call” button, not expecting anything to happen.

But after a few seconds a female automated voice spoke to you.

“Thank you for calling. This place only appears to the suffering. If you are receiving this call, congratulations! Your prayers have been answered. Drink the liquid in the paper cup above this payphone. Drink the liquid. Drink the liquid. Drink the liquid.”

The voice lagged, a static sound accompanying the automated voice. Your breath got shaky as you looked around, holding the phone close to your ear with both hands. This could only be some sort of kidnapping scheme or this was a sick dream.

“It’s a dream, y/n. Calm down, nothing's gonna hurt you.”

You muttered to yourself, pinching your forearm tightly and wincing from pain. This wasn’t a dream after all.

Your gaze landed on the brown paper cup that was balancing delicately on top of the payphone, your cracking knuckles reaching for it as you let the phone fall out of your grasp, being caught mere inches from the sticky floor of the photobooth by the coil. Bringing the cup closer to your face you saw a dark viscous liquid that smelled sweet enough to sting your nose. Your face contorted into disgust, debating on whether not to drink the contents of the paper cup.

“Drink the liquid. Drink the liquid. Drink the liquid.”

The voice continued ringing in your ears. You had nothing to lose. If you died then you at least got what you wanted. Holding your breath, you brought the cup closer to your quivering lips, parting them slightly as you held your nose tightly, not wanting to feel whatever horrible taste could be found in that dark pit of goo.

It burned the moment it hit the delicate taste buds on your tongue, your voice muffled as the fluid descended down your throat, your larynx bobbing up and down with each gulp. Despite covering your nose you could taste the pungent sweetness, it tasted like pure acid. Not that you knew what that tasted like but what you assumed it would.

You coughed, accidentally spilling some of the goo on the floor, dribbling out of your mouth. The heavy rain pitter-pattered against the metal roof above your head, your eyelids threatening to shut. The cup fell out of your hand as you slammed your forehead against the payphone, not hard enough to bleed but hard enough to bruise. Your jawbone hurt from how much you’d been crying, eyes puffy as the salty tears mixed with the rain droplets on your face.

“i-i’m sorry mom, i’m so fucking sorry.”

You rolled your forehead left to right against the rusty material of the payphone, your soaked hair covering your empty eyes. Your knees bent under you causing you to fall on your butt with your knees clinking against each other, the sticky contents on the floor sticking to the soft fabric of your pants.

“I’M SO SORRY!”

You never thought a scream this loud could protrude its way out of your throat, the vibrations bouncing off the glass that to your surprise didn’t break. Everything started to become shades darker, almost as if a black and white filter settled over your vision.

No, this is how you’re gonna die.

Alone.

In the rain.

“Hyung, what are you gonna do with her?”

Muffled club music struck your ear along with a high pitched ringing, your eyelids felt as heavy as they’d been in the phonebooth. With your head pounding you slowly open your eyes, first not seeing anything but darkness before eight unknown men form a circle around you, hovering above you.

You shoot up from your lying position, fear overtaking your body. Where were you but more importantly why the fuck were you alone in a dark room with 8 young men? Not thinking straight, you decided to scream once again, thinking they would back off and let you be.

“Get away from me!!”

The males covered their ears, groaning in pain and a blonde boy throwing himself on the floor, rolling around.

“HEY!! HEY! WE’RE NOT GONNA HURT YOU!”

A strong voice overpowered yours, every word almost sounding like a grunt. You around, seeing that you were sitting on a soft leather couch before looking up at the male that was standing right infront of you. He was muscular, his biceps sitting snugly in the tight black t-shirt that covered him, a grey apron tied around his waist and his dark hair shielding his intense gaze and furrowed eyebrows. He had a jaw so sharp you could cut silence with it but silence was the last thing this room had. The boys were shouting at each other, trying to hush the others while screaming themselves.

“SHUT UP!!”

The room got quiet as the muscular guy roared, the seven other individuals coming to a halt. You looked at them all with a puzzled expression, all of them handsome, a fact you couldn’t deny.

“Where the fuck am I, who are you guys and p-please don’t kill me”

Your voice cracked at the end of your sentence as your eyes twinkled, tears teasing the corners of your eyes, fingers shaking in fear. The male closest to you sat down, the weight of the couch shifting. He rubbed his hand together before he started speaking in a calmer voice.

“I’m Changbin, bartender of the Lost Souls nightclub. That’s Chan, security guard.”

With his chin, he pointed at a guy in ripped black jeans with a white t-shirt, a sweatband across his forehead, pushing his slightly curly hair back. He didn’t look like a security guard, the only thing that might have pointed to that was the walkie-talkie hanging from his belt. You nodded before Changbin continued.

“And those are some friends, frequent visitors if you will.”

A light haired boy with shiny rhinestones under his eyes stepped forward after he’d been hugging the tallest guy in the room the entire time.

“u-uhm, the name’s Felix! This is Hyunjin, Seungmin, Jeongin, Jisung and Minho, and yeah those two, Chan and Changbin.”

He pointed at each guy respectively and the room filled with small “hi’s” and smiles. They didn’t look threatening, all of them being very timid and looking down at the ground. Your gaze diverted back to Changbin that was staring at you the entire time.

“Can somebody tell me where I am?”

Changbin cleared his throat, stomping his boot a couple of times.

“This is gonna sound,,, interesting but you have to believe me-”

You interrupted the muscular boy, pushing a strand of hair behind your ear, noticing that it had dried.

“Why should I believe you? We’ve just met?”

Changbin sighed.

“Just,,, hear me out”. You nodded before he continued.

“You answered a phone call right?”

Nodding once again your gaze drifted towards the other boys that were looking at Changbin with googly eyes.

“Well,,, this place only appears to those who are,,, struggling with themselves. Obviously you don’t have to tell us why you’re here but,,, this is a place to let go. The only rule here is no fighting”

“Or dancing on the tables” the tall blonde boy added with a snark causing a squirrel-like boy to giggle, playfully hitting the blonde before looking at Chan who glared back at him, the boy being flustered and turning serious again. Jisung, his name was.

“W-what did that phonebooth do,,, does everyone go through that?” you asked with a curious tone.

“Usually it’s a pleasant experience going in that phonebooth, the sun shining and people hanging around that alleyway before taking the phonecall and drinking the elixir,,, there must have been a glitch in the system.”

He sounded unsure, scratching the back of his head as he looked at all of the boys.

“System? What system? I’m dreaming, right?” you said in panic, wanting to get out of this oddly suffocating room.

“W-we are real and you’re not dreaming,,, it’s just that, we can’t meet in real life you know? This is a place to,,, let oneself go and I know it’s scary since you only get here randomly, it must have been hard passing out like that,,”

A boy with fluffy light brown hair and a pretty eye smile said, Seungmin! You remembered his name because you thought it fitted him, sounding both soft and sharp at the same time.

“y-yeah,,, it was scary b-but thank you for caring about me” you said with a half smile

“oh! and also, we treated all your wounds, luckily you were passed out so you couldn’t feel the pain but let me tell you,,, it looked awful, I don’t understand how you did that Chan” Jisung remarked with wide eyes, looking at you concerned before turning to Chan.

“Did what?” you inquired to which Jisung responded.

“Removing the pebbles in your wounds, h-how did you even get those in there?” he asked to which you tried to remember, seeing hazed memories of you crawling on the asphalt in the storming rain.

“I was crawling towards the phone booth'' you said quietly as the boys gazed at you with concern. The atmosphere got dusked and in an attempt to lift the mood you cleared your throat, lightly running your hands over the bandaids that were plastered on your scraped knees, wincing from the contact.

Changbin made eye contact with Chan, jerking his head towards the door to signal for him and the other boys to leave the room. Chan nodded and patted Jeongin on the shoulder, trying to scoot all the boys out of the room like a shepherd leading a bunch of silent sheep.

“Let’s have some fun! Drinks on me boys~” Chan exclaimed to get the boys off their worried thoughts about you, the curly haired male closed the door quietly and both you and Changbin stayed silent until the footsteps were faint on the other side of the black wooden door.

“Is this better?” Changbin said with a slight smile at the end. “They can be quite the bunch sometimes, either they’re very much off the deep end or they’re just a rowdy mess” he laughs, looking out in the distance before he looks at you with your knees under your chin, holding your legs close to your body.

“So,,, we’re all here for similar reasons?” you mumbled, holding your gaze stable on his dark eyes.

“yeah,,, pretty much. We’ve all dealt with something mentally draining and of course you don’t have to tell but I just want you to know that nothing will hurt you here.” Changbin replied.

“I do want to tell,,, but it’s just that I don’t want to be alone about it. I’ve never been around people that have shared the same experiences.”

Changbin slid closer to you on the couch, putting one leg over the other.

“It’s like that for,,, almost every single individual in the club, we all want to tell our stories and this is the place to do it. No one is gonna judge you for it. I remember thinking that when I first got here, ‘everyone is gonna judge me for not drinking’.”

Changbin’s last sentence caught your attention.

“but aren’t you the bartender? shouldn’t you know all the,,, liquors and such?”

Changbin sighed and you regretted you sentence, thinking that maybe you asked a too personal question.

“I do know them but not in the way one should.”

Something clicked in your head when the boy uttered those words. You nodded silently, letting your gaze fall to your wounded knees as your shaky voice spoke;

“So do I”

Changbin’s gaze was fixated on the floor as he shared what was on his mind.

“But no one judged me,,, eh,,, I never asked for your name!” the boy said to which you giggled, reassuring Changbin that you were in a stable state.

“It’s y/n, nice to meet you!” you said, stretching your hand forward to shake his. Changbin smiled towards your gesture.

“pretty name, angel” he said, shaking your hand and noticing how small it was in his grasp, the cold metal of his rings contrasting to your now warm hands. He didn’t let go immediately, instead holding your hand and feeling it’s warm temperature, running his thumb across your knuckles softly. You snarked at his comment.

“angel? didn’t know we had established pet names for each other in barely 10 minutes of meeting.”

“and I didn’t know angels landed in this place” he said back. “i’ve had to deal with 7 annoying boys that never listen to me,,, well, 8 but one of them,,, disappeared.”

You nodded, not wanting to overstep any boundaries by asking about that 8th guy incase it was an emotional topic.

“how is it? working with alcohol despite having quite a rocky relationship to it?”

The buff boy hummed, drumming his fingers on the seat next to him.

“It’s better than one might think. I get to be around it without engaging in the activity myself, simply serving clients and the boys already know it, we look out for each other. Like a family you know!” Changbin said with a happy tone, not wanting the conversation to get you in a bad mood after all you’ve been through that night.

“family,,, could use one of those” you joked and Changbin actually laughed which you’ve never felt with anyone before, the only response you usually got was your therapist writing down your self deprecating jokes with their orange lead pencil.

“you’re always welcome to us” he said, letting go of your hand that now felt empty. You felt safe. There was no way of describing it but you felt this caring aura around this man, drawing you closer to him.

“how long does this last? i’m guessing you go back to ‘the real world’ again at some point” you spoke, making quotation marks with your hands.

“it depends, it’s different every time but you will pass out just like you did when you got here but you won’t go back to the phone booth, you’ll wake up where you were last in real life. Time goes on in the real world but here,,, clocks don’t really work. We’ve tried bringing clocks or phones with us but the digits don’t change.”

You couldn’t believe what you were hearing. This had to be a dream.

“w-whats with the gold on the phone? Does money exist in this,,, universe?” you asked with confusion to which Changbin shook his head.

“no, drinks are free and so are the phone calls, i have no idea why the phone booth says that or why Chan said that drinks are on him, he must have been stressed trying to get the boys out of here” Changbin said to which you giggled.

“i-is there any time where you never return?” you asked, earning a bittersweet smile from the male.

“yeah,,, if those issues you have get resolved but,, that rarely happens. Destructive behaviours feed of each other. Get rid of one and it gets replaced with another.”

You recognised that. It was always something, you could never live in peace without feeling the need to self sabotage.

“Poor innie knows that too well” he added with an acerbic tone.

“innie?” you tilted your head in question, gazing around the dark room that was rather empty, only a couple of dark colored shelves on the wall and the couch you were sitting on along with the ceiling lamp that was stingy with it’s light.

“Jeongin, the youngest among us. Poor boy has been through it all, if it’s not drugs it’s self harm and Minho is a real dick sometimes, bringing pocket knives in “defense”. He’s delusional, thinking everyone is out to get him and Jeongin knows this. We’ve found our precious little boy in the bathroom too many times, holding those stupid knifes Minho keeps having on him and crying till his cheeks puff up.”

You took a mental note to keep your distance from Minho, feeling bad for Changbin that had to be amidst this mess while dealing with his own emotions. You could relate, being the emotional pillar between your parents that hated each other to the brink of physical violence. There’s always someone that has to suffer because of other people's problems.

“I’m so sorry to hear that, Changbin.” you managed to stutter out, not knowing what else to add to the conversation.

“Ah,,, don’t be, y/n! Just take good care of yourself, that’s what matters the most to me” Changbin said. You smiled, moving closer and hovered your hand above his shoulder.

“Can I?” you asked quietly to which Changbin nodded and moments later felt your warm hand patting his back. He felt listened to. Understood. And even though he was yet to tell you his entire life story he knew that you were different from the others. You actually cared about him.

The room started spinning again and you clutched onto Changbin’s black t-shirt, trying to stabilize yourself. Those rainbow colored speckles you had seen earlier appeared again, vision blurring right in front of your eyes.

“y/n? how are you?” Changbin’s voice was worried but he knew what was happening.

“it’s spinning again, I t-think I’m gonna pass,,, out” you muttered,

“It’s alright y/n, I’m here yeah?” His rough voice distinguished itself from his comforting words as you held onto the dark haired boy, a faint smell of tobacco interlacing with the air you breathed in through your nose. Your two arms were now wrapped around the male with your face against his broad shoulder, eyes shutting as tightly as they could, face contorting into fear until everything disappeared. The vague beats of the music. The pain that ached from your knees. The feeling of finally finding home in someone's arms.

Everything turned into nothing in Changbin’s embrace. You were slowly turning into his everything because he had nothing in his life.

And then you woke up.

You gasped for air as you woke up in panic, hunching over on the floor in a coughing fit, clawing at your neck for oxygen. Panting on the floor you put your forehead against the wooden laminated floorboards, your frizzy hair blocking out the little light that was in the apartment and being hit with the malodorous smell of distilled alcohol.

What was that?

You were convinced that it was some kind of wicked dream. An escape from reality even. But as Changbin said, you did wake up in the exact same place and position you passed out in. A long breath seized through your lungs as you shifted in your position on the floor.

“Son of a bitch!”

Tears prickled the corners of your eyes as the hard floor hit your wounded knees. You quickly sat down on your butt, lifting your knees up to your chin and only then did your heart drop.

It wasn’t a dream. Your eyes lingered on the bandaids that were placed with the utmost care across your both knees, a stain of dark brown blood seeping through the sticky elastic material and dried blood staining your knees in a haphazard attempt of somebody trying to wipe it off without hurting you. You managed to grab the edge of the sofa, levering yourself up with, testing out the strength left in your wobbly legs. Your phone lit up, sitting on the place you’re usually curled up in. Throwing yourself on the soft piece of furniture you observed the phone screen, lost eyes wandering mindlessly over the brightly lit display.

What you noticed wasn’t the worried text from your mother.

It was the fact that the digits hadn’t changed from when you passed out.

Your head snapped towards the tv screen and the phone fell from your hand when you stared at the screen, breath trembling.

The same documentary. The same colibri.

This couldn’t be. Surely you hadn’t just stopped time,,, right? This was not something Changbin warned you about. How long until you meet Changbin again? An hour,,, or ever?

There was nothing else you could do besides wait. Wait until the next time you pass out. And what better way to make time pass but to be confronted by your mother? You pulled up the text on your phone and read it hastily before scoffing.

[Are you eating well? Please call if you see this]

Since when did she care about you? You knew that she did care. Somewhere deep inside her motherly heart she did care but the way she displayed that so-called ‘affection’ didn’t make it obvious. You tried to justify every word, believing all the lies she fed you. You tried so hard to believe that you were healthy, that your mental health wasn’t deteriorating before the eyes of your very own mother that was refusing to see the truth. That her child was indeed in pain. You couldn’t blame her, it was her way of dealing with the issue but it didn’t make it easier for you. Your thumbs hovered above the keyboard, you couldn't think of anything better to write and quickly typed it down before you hit send.

[yes, i’m busy]

Busy contemplating your existence. Your father wasn’t exactly any better. Throwing out each one of your family members until there was only him left. He had no trouble filling that emptiness, simply creating a new family and forgetting you as if you were a chapter of the book called ‘previous life’. You didn’t mind, not after everything he did to you and your mother. There was no need for a person like that in your life but unfortunately it influenced you more than you thought, always seeking validation in either work or relationships because how could you validate yourself after your self esteem had been crushed by this tyrant?

You threw your phone on the table, a clink noise being heard as it hit a bottle, knocking it over but not breaking it. Your parental issues or mental health was for once not the biggest concern in your life, now instead wanting to search for the answers that could explain the nightclub. How did it exist? What caused it to exist and who was behind it? You needed to get back there somehow.

The tv had turned off by itself, you found yourself waking up on the couch, using a pillow as a blanket, hugging the warm material closer to your body as you whined. With confused and lost eyes you scanned the room for a clock, hitting the table a couple of times and finally getting your hands on your phone, bringing it closer to your eyes.

[3:02 am] the digits lit up. You rubbed your tired eyes with your left hand, throwing the pillow on the floor and using the phone display as a torch in the pitch dark room. There was no point in falling asleep again, you had already slept so many hours, sleeping anymore would only make you drowsy the entire next day. You yawned as you staggered towards the bathroom, flicking the lightswitch on the wall and squinting fiercely as you were blinded by the harsh bathroom ceiling light. You put the phone down and quickly caught your reflection in the mirror before you sat down on the toilet to pee, folding a couple of sheets toilet paper in your hand. You yawned again as you flushed, going to wash your hands but once again being amused by your reflection.

That’s not me.

It’s the person I’ve become but never wanted to be.

Your dark circles almost reached your cheekbones, the wounds on your knees still stinging even after hours of peaceful slumber. You poked your tongue out to which the reflection did the same, staring back at you with frizzy hair and puffy eyes from tears. You couldn’t trust it. Mirrors lie you thought and so does every single reflective surface in the entire world. You would never know what you truly looked like and that ignited panic in you, feeling your breath rapidly increasing as you held onto the white cold edge of the bathroom sink.

This happened. Too often. It was the feeling of not knowing yourself or your surroundings. Like you had just appeared in this world, scared and alone. To not know who you are and having to live with yourself til the day you die frightened you. But you didn’t know if death was any better. Sure, the thought was comforting but being buried under layers of soil, having flowers and insects living their best life above you as you simply rotted away wasn’t the solution to all your worries although a moment of eternal peace did sound tempting.

You felt a lump in your throat, trying to cough as if it was some sort of anxiety flem when in reality it was your brain setting up imaginary barricades. Your hair draped in front of your face and with furious eyes you peeked up, seeing your almost demon-like expression and smiling psychotically.

I hate you.

I fucking hate you, y/n l/n.

Your smile was wiped off the moment the room started spinning. Your reflection becomes diffuse in the mirror as if it wasn’t enough not recognising it. A loud gulp made its way down your esophagus as you continued staring at yourself in disgust. You blinked slowly, every time you closed your eyes you saw those rainbow colored specks all around, almost as if they were distracting you from what was happening, like a kaleidoscope for a child. You felt as if the ground started shaking, an earthquake in your personal world that was separated from the real one. Maybe you were going back to the nightclub, to Changbin’s reassuring arms or maybe you we’re really going crazy this time. The specks got bigger, turning into elaborate patterns in neon colors that clouded your vision. You kept eye contact with your reflection for what seemed like forever, despising the person that was staring back, your gaze broken as your eyes rolled back in your skull, your eyes white as if you’d been hexed before you collapsed on the frigid bathroom floor.

“y/n? y/n, wake up!”

The sun dazed your eyes as you woke up on the slightly toasty concrete. Changbin tilted his head as a cigarette was hanging out the corner of his mouth, bright sunlight behind him. He had on a jean jacket with patches from several underground punk and rock bands, his neck was embellished with multiple silver chains and his hair was slicked back, glistening in the heat. He knocked the wind out of you even more, as if passing out in the bathroom wasn’t enough torture.

“oh y/n! you’re awake!”

Chan says, coming closer to you, this time he’s wearing a tanktop that showed off his flawless abs, your mouth watering at the sight. You only then remembered that you looked like a mess, still in your pyjamas that consisted of an old sports event t-shirt and small basketball shorts.

“a-am i in the club again?” you say, rubbing your eyes with both hands before feeling your head pounding a bit, sitting up slowly and feeling the harsh ground beneath you.

“no! you’re at the phone booth, everyone is here now oh and, this is usual how it’s supposed to look.”

After your vision stops blurring you look around, seeing the same alleyway and the same crimson phone booth but being hit with a completely different atmosphere. People were standing in all types of fancy clothes, trendy bright colors, exaggerated makeup and 7 inch platforms. The sun was beaming, it felt like a hot summer day with friends, just like the old days back when you had friends.

“why does y/n always wear pyjamas? don’t you have any cool clothes?” Hyunjin snarks, pushing his blonde hair behind his ears, displaying his dangly silver and black earrings.

“knock it off asshat, the poor girl is probably scared off her mind” Seungmin sneaks up behind the blonde, punching him lightly in the stomach before he smiles sweetly at you. Duality was this man's second name.

“t-thank you seungmin” you said, giving a smile back but being met with a surprised facial expression.

“you remembered my name!” he said, giggling adorably. You gave a small nod before you looked back at Changbin that was drawing a breath from the cigarette, puffing out a white cloud close to your face before waving it away. You noticed how tired Changbin looked, his cheekbones sunken in and his complexion bleak. He stretched out his hand to help you up which you grabbed, the insides between his pointer and ring finger being slightly stained orange from tobacco. You wobbled up on your feet, knees slightly unstable but feeling better from sitting down a while.

“are you alright y/n? i could open that resting room if you want” he said before inhaling smoke once again, spreading in his mouth and intoxicating him. You shook your head.

“i want to see the club, why not while we’re there you know?” you said, smiling brightly and making his heart jump. Changbin hid the grin he so desperately wanted to display by dropping the cigarette bud on the concrete, stepping on it with his heavy boots that had chain details attached.

“alright, whatever you want angel” Changbin sneered which caught the attention of the 7 other boys, all staring at the jean-jacketed boy.

“angel? seems like someone has a crush” Hyunjin remarked making Jisung burst out in laughter.

“says master heartbreaker” Chan said under his breath making Hyunjin furrow his eyebrows, diverting his gaze from Changbin to Chan instead.

“come on you guys! can we not go to the club already?” Felix said, him also wearing a crop top along with a leather chest harness that accentuated his figure. Jisung nodded and made his way towards the phone booth that had droplets of steam on the inside, Felix and Hyunjin following shortly after the squirrel-like boy. You observed the alleyway. People leaning against the grey wall where the phone booth was, either smoking or chatting. Some were standing, others sitting down directly on the concrete, feeling the same heat you felt as you woke up.

With unstable steps you walked towards the phone booth behind all the boys, Changbin staying by your side and waving his hands towards the 7 boys that had somehow crammed into the humid and stuffy metal building, Chan closing the glassdoor as a couple of the boys giggled. You and Changbin stood on the other side of the door, seeing how Chan grabbed the black phone you had once held with cold dirty hands and Seungmin giggling as he took a sip out of the contents in the paper cup, passing it around to the others that did the same.

They disappeared right in front of you. Your mouth stood agape. They didn’t pass out, they just disappeared into thin air, leaving the airless crimson structure empty yet again.

“w-wait, why didn’t they pass out?” you asked, turning to Changbin as you ran a hand through your hair.

“it happens when you’re new. the body isn’t used to the entire,,, universe switch so you will probably pass out this time also but don’t worry, i’ll catch you”

Changbin grinned, opening the door and being hit by the lack of oxygen. He held the door open for you to which you smiled, stepping inside and seeing that the paper cup had been refilled automatically. The door closed behind Changbin, you standing in close proximity to the boy as you lifted the phone slowly, still feeling the warmth from Chan’s hand. The dark haired boy grabbed the brown paper cup, not even looking at the goopy substance before drinking it, seeing his adam's apple bob up and down. You put the phone towards your ear, wondering why you didn’t hear the female automated voice.

“it doesn’t work?” you said with confusion to which Changbin smiled, pressing in the infamous number on the rusty keypad.

[1800-xxx]

“yeah, it doesn’t if you don’t type in the number” he chuckled, holding the paper cup in both hands and leaning against the humid glass.

Suddenly you hear the voice you were dreading the hear.

It reminded you of that night. That dark rainy evening. The voice started to lag, just like it did last time. You hung up and turned around whereupon you saw Changbin handing you the paper cup. You gulped and put your lips on the edge of the cup, looking at him with unease but feeling comfortable with his presence. You tilted the cup, feeling the sweetness trickle down your throat, almost stinging your insides. Changbin smiled, he looked like the typical bad boy from every cliché teen movie but it made your heart flutter, slightly embarrassed at the state of yourself. He pushed away from the glass wall and swiped his thumb across the corner of your mouth, wiping off the sweet liquid and licking it off the tip of his thumb. You stood there, frozen at the sudden action, gazing softly at him.

“you had something there” he chuckled as you started to feel lightheaded again, your eyelids getting heavy.

“thanks” you said shortly, your gaze drifting down on the dirty floor beneath your feet, drifting in and out of consciousness.

Changbin didn’t say anything, catching you mere seconds after you collapsed on the grimy surface. Admiring your heavy eyes and puffy cheeks for a second before he himself disappeared into the abyss.

“One Moscow mule, please!”

An unfamiliar voice shouted through the blasting club music accompanied by what sounded like the shaking off a cocktail shaker. You groaned, your eyes fluttering open and being hit by the beams of a thousand light machines in all sorts of colors.

“Oh y/n!!” Jisung shouted on the other side of the bar, you found yourself sitting on a chair in the corner of the bar, on the same side as Changbin that was working diligently, mixing some concoction into a metal shaker. You rubbed your eyes, yawning and wondering how you could sleep sitting up. You heard Changbin set the metal cup down, telling something to the woman beside him, must be his co-worker you thought. He kneeled down next to the chair you were sitting on, looking up at you with curious eyes.

“how are you feeling?” he asked loudly, trying to overvoice the music.

“im good” you answered back just as loud, the two of you locking eyes. Changbin smiled at you with his tired face, glancing over the glasses that were located beneath the bar.

“you want something to drink?” Changbin said to which you nodded.

“give me anything” you said, messing with your hair and sighing. You felt tired, an urge to sleep despite the loud blaring music. Maybe it was more of an emotional fatigue. A lack of feeling. And that’s usually when you turn to the bottles. Changbin nodded, standing up and returning to his co-worker, starting to grab all kinds of pretty coloured alcohol.

“ay! y/n! come join us!” you heard Felix say, him standing with a glass in his hand, the other boys scattered around the club along with the other troubled individuals. You smiled widely, looking around and noticing the small exit gate connected to the bar. You patted Changbin on the back, him turning around with a grin before you exited through the gate, closing it after you and pushed through the crowd of people, making your way over to the boys.

“y/n, welcome to where you will feel alive” Jisung yelled, spreading his arms and nearly knocking someone in the hand.

It was truly living you thought. Every single way to escape reality was located here whether it would be alcohol, drugs or sex. People dancing and jumping, grinding and rubbing up against each other. In multiple booths there were people making out, touching in unknown places. Many looked outright high, moving as if their body was possessed by some dance god, not knowing how to control their limbs. You could have sworn you saw Seungmin putting a yellow pill in his mouth, smiling mischievously at someone you didn’t know.

So this was letting go.

“y/n! here!” you heard Changbin’s voice call behind you, turning around and seeing him putting a glass of clear liquid onto the stained wooden bar with coasters scattered all around, a couple lime wedges floating around with the ice in the glass.

“vodka tonic, giving you the strong ones” he said, grinning, to which you smiled back, understanding the hint to his personal life through his eyes. The glass was cold against your warm hand since you were in this stuffy environment filled with countless people and without any windows, only a ventilation system that led to nothing. You put the edge of the glass against your lips, taking a sip and swallowing harshly, feeling bitterness that tasted sweet because that’s what alcohol does when it’s consumed on a particularly bitter day. Or life.

The other boys were dancing, Chan mostly hanging around the edges of the nightclub and observing the nightlife. You made your way over to him, taking another sip in order to gain the courage to strike up a conversation.

“Sup? you feeling any better?” he asked before you had the chance to even open your mouth.

“better. why aren’t you enjoying yourself like the others?”

“i mean,,, i’m technically doing my job even though i’m not getting paid for it. i just like to be in charge i guess,,,” he said, getting more and more silent as he spoke. You nodded.

“i do work with stuff in real life as well” he added, to which you raised your eyebrows.

“what do you work with,,, if you don’t mind me asking!” you said, taking another sip of what tasted like Lucifer’s saliva.

“music producer! it’s tiresome but,,, i don’t really need sleep,,, or more like i can’t sleep. lucky there’s energy drinks and naps” he said with a giggle, his dimples displaying as he chuckled, leaning against the black walls of the nightclub.

“must be tough,,, but wait,,, i’ve never heard your music,,, and also shouldn’t you be the DJ then?” you said confused, swirling the liquid in your hand.

“but that’s the thing y/n, all these people, every single person you see in this room lives in another universe”

You gazed at him, Chan looking straight ahead towards the crowd.

“what do you mean by different universes?” you asked to which curly haired boy cocked his eyebrow.

“we will never coexist y/n, when i tell you that we’ve tried to bring our friendships to the real world i really mean it. we will never exist in your life outside of this hub and,,, it sucks.” Chan took a pause before speaking, pondering on what to say next.

“-thats what happened with a friend we had. i’m saying had because we don’t know where they are or what adventures await them. They just,,, disappeared” Chan said mellowly, you humming in response as you took a final sip of the devil’s juice, already feeling your face heating up.

“h-how does one get out of this place,,, forever i mean” you asked, leaning back against the same wall as Chan and looking right ahead as the song changed to a slower, almost psychedelic beat.

“when said person gets help,,, or starts to feel better or when you hit the casket, three options basically” he says with an acerbic smile. “what? Do you like Changbin?” Chan says teasingly. “you’ve been catching glances at him this entire conversation.”

He was right, you had been glancing over at Changbin occasionally, you couldn’t help it. Was it an excuse for you to look at his cute face from a distance or because you cared about him? You laughed it off but Chan turned serious.

“you know that’s it’s not possible.” he says quietly.

“what? what is not possible?”

“a relationship”

You choked on your own saliva, being blinded by the annoyingly bright strobe lights.

“a relat- ya! do you really think I have time for any of that? besides,,, i’m not really interested in Changbin.”

“who said only you should be interested?”

Your eyes widened when Chan said that. No way could Changbin have these weird feelings to you, the feeling shouldn’t be mutual.

“h-has Changbin said something about you?” you asked timidly, gazing over at Changbin that temporarily made eye contact across the club.

“why don’t you ask him yourself? but i’m telling you y/n,, don't get attached, you will get hurt,,, j-just like i did once”

Sure, you understood what Chan meant. Everyone was here for the time being. One day he could disappear if he decided that the life he was living now either isn’t worth it or he takes control and makes something out of it. There comes a time where you are too tired of living the way you do and so you do something about it, no matter if it’s good or bad.

Changbin waved his hand at you, wanting you to join him behind the bar where now Felix was standing and annoying Changbin by tickling him or whispering in his ear as he moved his body with much fluidity. You smiled, waving towards Chan shortly before you once again made your way through the crowd, feeling lightheaded but in a positive way, as if you really were forgetting reality for a moment.

“y/n!! come!!” Changbin yelled, bouncing slightly to the typical house beat that was now playing, barely holding the bottle of gin since Felix was pestering him playfully. Changbin’s co-worker opened the wooden gate for you, smiling sweetly at you and you doing the same back, your gaze drifting down until you notice the red marks around her throat. You were often scared by people. Not by their actions but by their way to cover them up and of course, you were guilty of this too. Looking at these people you would never guess the pain that was going on inside, the surface level happiness really is surface level. You could smile genuinely towards her, you didn’t have to understand everything she was going through but you knew how it was, smiling when bridges are burning in your mind.

Sometimes pretending hurts more.

“Changbin!” you squealed after you had passed by his co-worker, holding the empty glass that was now nothing more but half melted ice cubes and three wedges of bright green lime. Without thinking you put the glass down on his working station and pull him into a tight hug, squeezing your body against his and feeling the warmth radiate off of him. He froze awkwardly in your arms before loosening up, wrapping his arms around you and ultimately taking in your scent that was now mostly pungent with liquor and sleep, a soft scent that Changbin couldn’t get enough off. You felt safe which was rare in a nightclub especially knowing that most people were either high or carrying weapons. But there was something about him that made you feel like home. It felt familiar, like you’d visited his soul. As if the two of you were sharing the same empty house in your heart despite you never letting anyone in, too scared to be hurt again. Maybe you could let Changbin in, maybe he was different.

The hug lasted longer then you thought, his eyes darting all over the stuffy room before he slowly let go, taking a long inhale of the almost addictive smell. The two of you locked eyes, a shy red tinged his cheeks that was only visible due to there being a spotlight just above him.

“can i talk to you for a second?” you asked, rather boldy which was odd. He nodded and grabbed your wrist only to pull you in behind the same black door where you once ended up in, confused and dazed. He let go of you and closed the door behind him, you standing in the middle of the room that now had tiny light standing on the floor, nothing more new then the same old shelfs and black leather couch.

“what did you wanna talk about?,,, figured you maybe wanted to tell me somewhere more quiet”

‘Quiet’ was an overstatement, the music was making the walls shake and even though it was muffled the jumping of hundreds of people could still be heard in the small dark room where you were alone, with him.

“ehm,,, i don’t know really,,,” you stammered, not knowing what else to say.

“is something wrong y/n? Do you need to be alone for a while? i can le-”

“no, thank you,,, i just wanna be with you.” You interrupted him, his eyebrows furrowing when you uttered the last sentence. He stepped closer to you, the soles of his shoes making a pleasant sound against the floor. You lifted your gaze at him, Changbin standing right in front of you. Beauty that could make you drool. His hair was slightly messy, temples sweaty as he had worked and fetched all kinds of bottles for hours, the grey apron marking his title in the nightclub.

“but i’m here with you! Are you playing some sort of prank on me? did chan set this up?” he chuckled with a smirk, throwing a gaze at the door before diverting it back to your glossy eyes.

“n-no,,, Changbin, I want you”

His mind went blank and so did yours.

You don’t know why you said that but it was too late. The cat was out of the bag. It was too late.

“y/n? are you drunk?” he asked, looking at you seriously and putting the back of his hand against your forehead, suspecting you might be getting sick. You shook your head in response.

“no, it was only one drink, you know? i just,,, kinda,, want you”

You grabbed his hand that was still lingering on your forehead and drew it closer to your heart, holding firmly by his wrist. The clothed valleys of your breasts made contact with the rough palm of his hand, Changbin’s eyes still glued to yours. He scoffed loudly.

“and here i was,,, thinking it was some sort of unrequited love”

Sorry, not sorry, I just can’t stop thinking about them!

Cha Soo-hyun from Signal: Imagine having a powerhouse like Kim Hye-soo on your cast and then saddling her with an awkward/tragic workplace romance in lieu of idk actual character development that happens ON SCREEN as opposed to off it. I mean, Signal is excellently made, but there’s no denying that Cha Soo-hyun got a raw-ish deal. I would have loved to see her grow into the badass cop she is when we meet her first, but most of her time onscreen is spent reacting to events set in motion by The Men, and just, like, why. In my head, the perfect fic for Cha Soo-hyun would cover the years after Lee Jae-han’s disappearance and before Park Hae-young’s entry; so much of her struggle in the early years was to be taken seriously as a cop, and I want to see her doing that without Lee Jae-han’s help. I would also NOT be opposed to a post canon OT3; it could be incredibly fun to write the tangled dynamics of that, especially now that Cha Soo-hyun isn’t the wide eyed rookie that Lee Jae-han knew, and Park Hae-young’s YEARNING to belong would neatly fold into what his sunbaes could offer.

Ahn Young-yi from Misaeng: My god, this woman suffered in Misaeng. I just want the fic in which she lets herself be angry. I fully understand her choices in Misaeng- the tightrope that she’s walking in the hopes of survival- but I won’t deny that I felt robbed of the satisfaction of seeing her hurl a rock or three at the heads of her misogynist colleagues and boss. There’s probably a fic out there about how Young-yi starts to build her networks with the other women at One International, and how she climbs the ladder to power. I want this to be a story about women making space for the ones after them, and pulling them up with them. It’s the story she deserves, along with all the other women in that series, whose stories were sidelined to make space for The Men.

Yoon Hee-soo from Into The Ring: That woman is going to be President in ten years and nobody will convince me otherwise. Love her pragmatism, her wicked, trollish sense of humour, her ambition and the fact that she cares deeply but isn’t performative about it. She’s the one I would trust to Get Things Done, just as I would trust Goo Se-ra to rock the comfortable status-quo. Together (and with the intrepid Gong-myung) they will CHANGE THE WORLD. Where’s the fic, world, where??? ( side-eyes self) ps. I hear there’s a season 2 in the works and if it doesn’t give me some version of this fic, I shall be very sad.

Jang Ro-sa from Hospital Playlist : WHERE is the 70 episode show about the Life of Jang Ro-sa? I loved her from the first episode where she’s so matter-of-fact about her marriage of convenience; how on earth did she manage to raise a bunch of kids who ALL fell in love with God first and forever? Why didn’t she become a pianist? What are she and Jeong-su doing on that pilgrimage/ road trip ? I just want to know ALL of it. Someone write it * puppy face *

Kim Sang-sook from Into the Ring- Jang Hye-jin brings so much sparkling charm to her role as Se-ra’s mom, I just fell crazily in love with her. I just love how much she’s just herself and unfazed by other people’s opinions of her; i love that she fucks up on the regular but with STYLE. I think that’s a lovely trait that she’s passed on to her daughter- one that will carry her through her chosen life of MAKING THE WORLD BETTER. Anyways, where’s the fic where Sang-sook gets involved in some pyramid marketing scheme and Gong-myung has to bail her out of it and they both have to keep it secret from Se-ra and her dad? I demand this be put in my eyeballs AT ONCE.

Do Hae-won from Beyond Evil: My god, a villain’s villain. Gil Hae-yeon puts the fear of the devil into you every time she slithers onto the screen with her weaponized cloying, subservient femininity. She seems so brittle, but beneath it is the hard rock of years of bitterness. The show doesn’t bother to do more than hint at the reasons why- because of course, female villains are never afforded the interiority of their male counterparts, or even chance for understanding- but I think Gil Hae-yeon manages to convey both her resentment at this world ruled by men and their rules. and her contempt for them as a class in every scene. I wonder how things would have been different- if they would have been- if she’d had a daughter, instead of a son. Anyways, an absolutely riveting performance, and I think that’s the only reason I am sort of tempted to contemplate a post canon fic for her. How does she survive jail? What does she do after? Who’s going to write it for me? (SIGH.)

Jung Geum-ja from Hyena- I don’t think a lot needs to be said about why Jung Geum-ja is literally one of the best female characters ever to be written in a kdrama. Kim Hye-soo is in her element in her role as this half-gangster/ half- vengeful angel, 100% unforgettable woman. Love to see sexpot Ju Ji-hoon fold like a pack of cards in the face of that unbearably sexy combination of wit, grit and panache; but ALSO love watching every woman in a radius of 5 kms faint from lust and longing to be her and be with her at the same time. Luckily for me, I don’t have to write any of the fic, everyone who’s watched the show just head over to Gin’s AO3 page and treat yourself.

Iceland

To visit Iceland was my all time dream which come true. In the next few rows I would love to introduce you Iceland how I see it and how I experienced it. Warning, this is going to be a bit longer :)

Me and my boyfriend visited Iceland in the beginning of September 2019. For me it's a country of amazing nature, perfect calm and coziness!

Last few minutes of the flight I was sticked on the window of airplane and stunned by how strange the country is! The glaciers, the amazing river beds, suddenly kilometres of orange ground and from time to time small dot - a lonely home in middle of nothing. It's hardly describe how exciting minutes it was!

Our roads started in Keflavík- we picked up our car there and start our long journey :)

First of all what is going to “got you” when you are on Iceland is the relief of the ground - it's absolutely brutalism view. You are walking trough absolutely flat ground and suddenly you are surrounded with high mountains. By the long distances in between civilization you are sometimes totally alone in nature - green moss ground, lava mountains, nothing alive around you, no trees, really nothing only ships. And trust me, it's enormous mind shower. I enjoyed this feeling with full heart.

Because we want to see always maximum what we can, we scheduled our “hotels”to have them always on “middle of our road” and because Iceland might be bigger as you can imagine, was normal to drive 400km per each day (and some of the days spent there we drove even more - I'm adding you here also a map of places which we visited. ) However, each km of this land was breathtaking and I was glad we decided to work whole circle around the island! Even now with distance of time I'm not able to tell where it was the most beautiful to me. Every part of the island has it's own magic and I just love this kind of magic :)

Day 1, 2, 3 - Reykjanes and South Iceland

As I mentioned, we started in Keflavík, from Keflavík to Reykjavík where we stayed for 2 nights. First day we made just a long walk across the city and enjoyed a local atmosphere. Reykjavík is really beautiful and cozy so you will definitely not get bored here! The city is not su busy, with such a lovely architecture so walk with not an exact goal was exactly made for us :)

Next day we went to see the Geysir and from Geysir we made hike to the thermal river - on Google we found an info it's 5minutes from car so it seems to us as a great idea to end the day here, but on place we found it's one hour trough the mountains. However to see and to sit in Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River really worth it :) Just imagine sitting in 40C stream, in a fogy weather surrounded with monumental mountains! It was absolute relax and I'm glad we made it here!

Day 3 started and our plan was to see the waterfalls located on East coast, Black sand beach and glacier. The plan was ambitious because in from of us was exactly 428km! First on our road was Seljalandsfoss waterfalls.

I can only highly recommend to visit this place as the waterfall was mesmerise! From Seljalandsfoss it's just a few minutes driving to Skógafoss Waterfall which is again absolutely beautiful. I would say that during whole road we meet with so many waterfalls but not all of them were easy to access, but Skógafoss Waterfall is really easy to access and you can enjoy the view as rom the down as from the up of it and it is going to be definitely one of the most beautiful waterfalls you ever seen :)

Then a Black sand beach - we didn't make it to the Solheimasandur Plane Wreck as it was like hour of walk across the windy beach so we rather enjoy the view on the beach from up (you will find there also Dyrhólaey Lighthouse ) and then spend some relaxing time on the beach :) Honestly said, the beach was totally rowdy although we were there already a bit of “out season” but still nice to see. The rocks there was shaped into amazing geometrical forms and we both just love it.

As we continue in our road to Höfn where our next accommodation was we were crossing magnificent lava fields ( Eldhraun ) - you will go trough a kilometres of black lava rocks overgrown with fluffy green moss and the picture you are going to see here is far more than amazing :) It's so unbelievable how the artsy nature is here!

The sun was about to set and we finally arrive to the glacier lake Jökulsárlón. This place left in me really strong memory. It was my first time seeing glacier and again it was one breath taking view for me. In the lake was a group of about 20 grey seals which were totally curious about us :) However, standing there make you to realise how year after year we are closer to lost the glaciers and how important is to protect them.

Day 3 - East Iceland

We left our accommodation early in the morning and drive few kilometres to get Stokksenes - one of the place which you always see on the photos from Iceland. Well, here I can only write and reccomend - sometimes it's better to Google the place first ;) It was the only place which we visited and were needed to pay entry fee. The Viking village which is here is in very poor condition, but I enjoyed a lot the view across black sandy beach on the majestic mountains! And benefit of coming early is - no humans around, only you and nature! ;)

Our next stop on map is going to be Seyðisfjörður but first of all, in front of us is long road around fjords and trough high mountains. When we were in the mountains, there was slowly zero visibility, no signal and turn after turn, but each time we drive down from the mountains there was awaiting on us something special - calming surroundings of the fjord, hidden waterfalls, or Cristal-clear rivers (and of course sheep ).

As we were closer to the Seyðisfjörður we entered to the totally different Iceland as we seen before! It's difficult to describe why, maybe it was because there were no clouds on the skies and no rain, maybe because there were a trees (yes, trees were missing in most of the areas) but that's ok as each part of Iceland seems to me unique in their own way and each kilomer of the land was different. And now ... Seyðisfjörður - It's really small town with only a few cozy houses (about 700 inhabitants ). In the end of the town is fjord with the same name Seyðisfjörður and sitting there, looking on the town was absolutely peaceful feeling. You are surround by high mountains, over below them are colorful houses, nice streets and in the middle of that is blue wooden church. It left a very special feelings in my heart and I will always thing about this town as about one of the loveliest I ever visited. It's a bit out of the road, I know, but if you are going around, stop by for a baked cod with fennel!

Final destination of the day - Borgarfjörður Eystri - small village mostly know for beautiful nature. If you are coming in season from mid- April to mid- August then you definitely must see Puffins paradise here! In Borgarfjörður Eystri is one of the best places in the world to see the Puffins (however we were there in September, so not lucky us :D ). Anyway, the nature here is so beautiful that that you don't want to stop discovering it. We were accommodated here in Blábjörg Guesthouse and they do have their spa outside of the Guesthouse, so you can be watching how the sun set over the fjord from hot tup (and I did so and I love it! )

Day 4 - North Iceland

I'm still on East and just a very shortly about Stuðlagil Canyon in Jökla - It's mesmerising canyon of longest glacier river. Almost nobody knew about until recently ( for a long time it was hidden under water). There are 2 options how to get there and if you can, definitely go to see it as it really wort it. One option will bring you to the parking place and you can easily walk few meters to see the canyon from up. On the other (east) side of the river is option 2 - you will drive to the parking place and then you need to walk - walk for a really longer (8km) and you will be able to access to inside of the canyon. We didn't had so much time to make such a hike so we see the canyon only from up, but I have never seen such a shaped canyon - Stuðlagil Canyon has one of the biggest and most beautiful basalt columns formation in Iceland.

Let's go to another waterfalls. And not just any regular waterfalls, but the greatest waterfalls in Europe called Dettifoss waterfalls.

When you arrive to Dettifoss, first what absolutely got me was the rocky road here (from the parking place you go trough land of nothing only rocks, but not any regular rocks, the land was reminding me the pictures of moon and it was absolutely strange and breath-taking in the same time). Before we go there I saw a lot of pictures, read something about this place, but it absolutely shocked me when I was standing on the rocks over the waterfall. The volume of running water! The sound was so powerful! It was one of the feelings when you realise how small you are and how strong the nature is! I was trying to capture this place somehow, but on none of the pictures I took was pictured the power.

Let's continue! This day was full of experiences! :) Our next destination was little fishing town over the fjord called Ólafsfjörður and there are 3 more interesting places to see by the road :)

Just a few minutes from Dettifoss you will drive around Námafjall and it's worth to stop there, because I have never ever seen something like this piece of land.

Námafjall geothermal area known as Hverir, can be seen from distance due many smoking fumaroles. Whole are is dressed in orange/ brown color and on first look it seems like Mars looking-alike ground with boiling mud pots, surrounded by sulphur crystals of many different colours. This sulphur gives the area an overwhelming smell of egg (and the first moment was really uncomfortable, but the picture you are going to see will hypnotise you! )

Just like a 5 minutes from Hverir you can find Grjotagja cave. A small lava cave with Cristal blue water - in the past it was popular bathing place for locals but due volcanic activities the temperature of water heat up to more than 50 degrees Celsius and that’s far too hot for taking a relaxing bath in and bathing is prohibited. However, it’s beautiful place to see anyway!

Next on our map is beautiful Goðafoss waterfall - Whole day we had “grey” weather and when we arrived to this The Godafoss waterfall (one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland) the sun was shinning and in the middle of the waterfall was beautiful shaped rainbow! Goðafoss = The water of the gods was really looking like the name is, but maybe it was only because of the magical weather over this place. However, they stayed in my mind as on of the most beautiful waterfalls I ever seen!

To get to the Ólafsfjörður we were crossing beautiful city Akureyri. Did you ever seen a traffic light where is instead of basic red light heart? Iceland is full of simply lovely details light this and when you saw them, they just made you a day better :)

Ólafsfjörður is a really really small town - fishing is the main industry here (mainly herrings) but it's also a home of many whales in waters around, so if you would like to watch the whales, you are on the right place! We were not on a whale tour (although it's very attractive) so I am not able to tell you more, but what I can tell you that the local people here are absolutely kindly and friendly (but I don't meet with unfriendly Icelanders anywhere! ) and we got so many tips what to see in this are of Iceland from locals! I am really thankful for that :) Nature around is so beautiful that this a bit out-of hand place worth to visit.

Day 5 - West Iceland & Westfojds

A road from Ólafsfjörður to Westfjords (city Hólmavík ) can be done trough highway or a bit longer variant - across the coasts. I love the view from cliffs and the atmosphere on the coasts so we took it - as locals recommended, across the cliffs and coasts.

I'm glad we did that, because we stoped on eastern shore of Vatnsnes Peninsula to see Hvítserkur . The view on 15 meters high monolith or sea-stack, an eroded volcanic dyke standing out of the water is quite spectacular! Hvítserkur is a home of many seagulls and if you come here in the right time, you can spot a grey seals - we saw a group of maybe 20 or 30 seals sunbathing a small island 50m from the land.

However, if you come to watch the seals, I have one more place which I can highly recommend to visit :) About 15 / 20 minutes from Hvítserkur is located Illugastaðir farm where you can view seals in their natural environment! Their quarrels and their love for each other. You can sit and watch their life - You are going to see there seals in groups spend time chilling on the rocks, sleeping and relaxing or playing in water. Most of the seals are quite social, so if you will sit on rock, in calm and quite maybe some of them will like to see you and will naturally swim closer to you, however, keep on mind that they are wildlife, shy animals. From my experience : Me and my boyfriend were sitting on rock and watching 3 seals which swim in front of us when suddenly senior German couple in neon green nylon jackets start “running” around and loudly talking each other - seals were immediately away. By the way, sending regards to these 2! Basically I don't remember random strangers, but I would still recognise them :D But back to the topics - on Iceland is many seal watching places, but Seal Colony Illugastaðir is definitely one of the best places to see them.

Our next stop is our final destination of the day - Hólmavík. In from of us is absolutely amazing road which we both enjoyed as the view will totally entertain you :)

Hólmavík is a small village but still largest settlement in the region. We stayed there because we both just love the countryside. Everything around seems to me very cozy. When the sun set, we went to the local restaurant for a local fish and can only recommend :) (And in this point of view is no needed to describe the restaurant more, because there is only one ;) ). During whole our stay I wish to see Northern lights (Aurora Borealis) - Northern lights on Iceland can be seen between September to April - of course during winter it's more easier to hunt Northern light. In September when it's only starting you need to be more lucky and more far from city light. From what I read Westfjords is perfect for seeing Northern light so that was also one of the reason why we decided to visit Hólmavík. During whole our stay on Iceland I was carefully watching Aurora forecast apps (yes, I downloaded more of them to be sure :D ) and each night wherever we were we stayed a part of the night outside watching the skies. Honestly? I really felt a lack of sleep but the will was stronger :D Each night we had very low prediction of to see it and when there was higher chance, there was a heavy clouds. This night in Hólmavík was prediction for Aurora Borealis on level 2 (so not so much - locals said when it's on level 3 you will probably see it If are good skies), but I see the place as the only chance to see it, because our next day will be on more populated place. Over the town is a small hill (right over the church) where we walked in the night - it was maybe 11:30 p.m. and as we were a bit more far from the street (only a few meters) we start see green light on the skies. In the beginning it was only a week visible green lines, but suddenly it start shinning bright, moving around the skies and dancing above us. We spent there maybe a hour and it's the experience I wish to had - my dream come true and it definitely worth the hours of waiting while others were sleeping :)

Day 6 - Snæfellsnes peninsula

Ok, Snæfellsnes peninsula is truly reach on interesting places and things to see, so I am going to try to take it in a nutshell :) You can see there amazing waterfalls, beautiful Gerðuberg basal columns, popular spot with little black wooden church Búðakirkja church, gold beaches and amazing cliffs, rhyolite mountains, Mt. Stapafell which is high palagonite volcano few amazing cozy little colourful fishing towns, caves and Snæfellsjökull glacier which second largest glacier on Iceland after jökulsárlón. Snæfellsnes peninsula definitely deserve your attend and I'm sure each visitor of this land will find there your “piece of cake”. In Arnarstapi is “bridge” over the sea made of basal columns ( Gatklettur - Arch Rock ). We spent there whole day and I can absolutely imagine to have there more days to discover all of these beauties more! In Hellnar you will find a lovely spot for a coffee & cake stop called café Fjöruhúsið located just over the sea. Next to that you can see there Berserkjahraun Lava Fields - absolutely extraordinary place where volcanic rocks are formed to many shapes and are overgrown with fluffy green moss and red blueberry bushes. Huge tourist attraction and one of the most photographed places on Iceland is Kirkjufellsfoss not because it’s very big but because it has the uniquely shaped Mt. Kirkjufell as a backdrop - when we arrived there whole Mt. Kirkjufell was hidden in rain clouds but it's beautiful place anyway :)

This night we stayed in very charming place - Staðarhús - Horse farm guesthouse in middle of nothing (but really, there was no village around, nothing). When sun set and we come out, it was the darkest night I ever seen. There was no sounds of civilisation, only a sound of wind. It was truly magical. However, there is one interesting place which I would like to mention on way from Snæfellsnes peninsula to Staðarhús! Geothermal tub where you can chill and warm up after a windy / rainy day - Landbrotalaug Hot Springs! It's very random spot close to the main road and when you are in, you are surrounded only by wonderful scenic landscape and nothing else. Iceland is full of geothermal areas and hot springs, but are not that popular. Most of the visitors know Blue lagoon or Myvatn Natural Bath, but there is plenty places where you can stop and chill for a couple of minutes before you will go to another journey. We were crossing 4 places and many left undiscovered. It's one of the things I absolutely enjoyed and highly recommend :) On Google you can find a maps with marked areas with natural springs where you can bath.

My personal remarks and recommendations

Iceland is amazing island! Full of natural beauty! Wherever your roads will take you, you will be amazed. That's why it's better to not have your itinerary planed tightly. We were stopping on many place we didn't ever know about them and I was enjoying it. Sometimes we even stop next to the road to just enjoy the landscape view more!

When I read about weather conditions on Iceland I didn't know what to expect. On most of the blogs I read that I should be prepared for crazy weather! Yes, it's true Iceland is very windy, better jacket is better :) However, when it's not windy, the temperature is more or less friendly. What I highly recommend is to take sure you have comfy good shoes, because you will be not limited with where you would like to go if you shoe well :)

Local cuisine - try as many fishes as you can! They cook them absolutely delicious! Also Icelanders bake perfect kinds of bread and amazing rhubarb cakes ;) If you are planing to order beer with your baked cod, you might be surprised that the beer can cost half price of the main dish or even more. Me and my boyfriend were not eating in restaurants often, we had our gas burner and were cooking our dished and making tea on camping places by the roads (and Iceland is rich on camping places - you can find them very often and they are all clean, in beautiful nature).

Grocery stores - well this might be something you should google. There can happen to you that you will be passing 100km without any grocery store by the road, so It's better to google it and cross to some city around you. Icelanders have a map with grocery stores and we were using it too (for object this one ).

Geothermal pools / hot springs - bath in as much as you can, it's awesome relax to be sitting in 35C + water in such an amazing scenery nature!

Sheep are everywhere.

I got many questions on Instagram if is Iceland expensive? So the answer is yes and no - it all depends on you. Most of the activities on Iceland are for free. We were only on one parking were was required to pay (some were voluntary and some absolutely free). What was very surprising for me that was toilets - slowly on all of the parking places where we were was a free or voluntary fee toilets in absolutely clean condition with no lack of toilet paper! If you want to eat in restaurants, you can find cheaper restaurants or expensive - In standard restaurant costs dinner about 15€ - 20€.

Another frequently question was - what kind of car do I need to rent? And here it again depends on you :) We had 4x4 car and I would suggest it, because some roads required it, but if you are going to see only Golden circle then it's Ok if you don't have 4x4. In winter it might be different and if you are going here in winter I wouldn't consider anything else only powerful 4x4 car :)

Reykjavík - Norðurey Hotel City Garden Höfn - Lilja Guesthouse Borgarfjörður Eystri - Blabjorg Guesthouse Ólafsfjörður - Brimnes Hotel & Cabins Hólmavík - Finna Hotel Borgarnes - Staðarhús - Hestaland Guesthouse Maybe not all of these hotels were perfect butter us were good located. If you are going to visit Iceland, I suggest to find a place to stay “on your road” because the distances there are big and driving 50km extra just because of sleeping seems to me too much :) And other factor of choosing the hotel is availability.... well :) I got this trip in August for my B-day from my handsome boyfriend and our journey was starting in 20 days so we were meeting with already booked out hotels often.

I wonder how many times I have driven to Kerikeri and beyond along State Highway 10 or north to Kaitaia on State Highway 1 and driven past the signs that point to the Waimate Mission just a few kms up the road. Thinking to myself that one day I must go there but in reality being so focused on my destination that I would probably never have got there had it not been for the media manager at Landmarks Whenua Tohunga who contacted me through my blog asking me to write a series of articles on some of the sites they help promote in Northland.

Landmarks Whenua Tohunga connect a number of historic places on behalf of Heritage New Zealand, DOC, local councils and private owners. They are charged with promoting these mostly lessor known sites to encourage both Kiwi’s and tourists to take the time to come visit. As I have said in the previous blogs the places we are visiting in Northland all have an important part to play in the history of New Zealand but all are tucked away off the main road.

This blog is about making that side trip, off the main road, and getting to visit some of these places. Having already visited Clendon House and the Mangungu Mission both located in the Hokianga. As well as the Rangihoua Heritage Park this visit to Te Waimate was probably also the most accessible of all the places we intended to visit.

First though we had to leave our wonderful stopover for the night at the Wairere Boulders. If you haven’t already done so you really need to read the blog I wrote about this place and our time there. It’s one of the nicest places we have found on our travels around New Zealand and we have certainly stayed in a few places!

The road to the Mission house takes us through Kaikohe which is the half way point if you are riding the new cycle trail from Mangungu to Opua. There are a number of places around here that you could stay with the trusted and well thumbed Travel Directory showing 5 options with a few kms of the town. As however we where meeting a friend in Kerikeri we chose not to stay anywhere here.

Te Waimate Mission

Arriving from the west the first thing you notice is the historic church sitting on the small hill. There are a number of old churches in the Hokianga some of which have fallen to wrack and ruin. This one however is much more imposing and well preserved. More about the church a bit later.

The day we arrived there was plenty of parking in the huge driveway with only a couple of other people there. The first thing to notice where the magnolia trees in bloom with a riot of pink flowers really very pretty.

Straight ahead at the end of the drive is the old Sunday school house that dates to around the late 19th century. It has been through a number of uses during the time the site has been occupied and is not currently open to the public.

This site was the first inland settlement established in the Bay of Islands and was established to teach the local Maori people European farming practices as well as forming the fourth mission station in New Zealand. With all of the missioners coming from England the place was developed along the lines of a small English village with a church, school, mill, blacksmith and houses. Today the place still retains that English feel especially as you walk through the gardens towards the mission house.

Talking about gardens a lot of people probably wouldn’t be aware that the famous botanist Charles Darwin spent some time here compiling his notes as part of the ground breaking voyage around the world on the Beagle.

We were met at Te Waimate by Alex Bell who was busy repairing one of the old farm gates. A man of many talents Alex is actually the man in charge here and also has the oversite of the two missions in the Hokianga. Unlike the two Hokianga sites this place is open Saturday to Monday during winter and Friday to Tuesday during summer so it wouldn’t take so much planning to get there on a day that it’s open.

As you can see from the smile on his face Alex loves his job and that enthusiasm rubs off when he starts telling you about the mission and it’s history. A really informative guide.

The Treaty of Waitangi

Celebrating 100 years

Walking through the second oldest standing house in New Zealand history abounds and it was here on the 9th February 1840 that the second signing of the Treaty of Waitangi took place although this was a fairly small signing compared to the 70 chiefs who signed at the Mangungu Mission it nevertheless was important in cementing the relationship between the church and local Maori.

Alex told us that the main living area was used as a school room and there are places in the room where the soft kauri paneling has been indented by people writing on top of it. There is also a glass covering over an area that shows ancient “graffiti” from one of the pupils. I tried to photo this but the light just wasn’t right. It is however a really interesting thing to see. Also proving that graffiti has been around for a lot longer than you might think.

Contained within the house and in various different rooms are leftovers from the days when it was a working farm with the lathe and various tools on free display. Although if you are tempted to “borrow” something there are security cameras in abundance. Wondering what the nail bed was I asked Alex who told me that it was used for separating the flax fibers that could then be turned into rope and with the abundance of flax in the area it would have had a lot of use.

Taking the chance to wander what was once the working farm it was interesting to read the information board about just how hard life was here and that eventually the missioners gave up both on the mission and the working farm. Today there was a small flock of Pitt Island Sheep a rare breed of black sheep that they are breeding here. As it was lambing season when we visited we didn’t want to get to close with one pair of lambs born the prior night.

In the background of the sheep photo you can see what was the first Oak tree planted in New Zealand and shortly after we left Te Waimate I read that the tree had died and fallen over. They have however saved cuttings from the tree and hope to plant one of these in it’s place soon.

During the mid 1840’s the house was used as the command post for the British Army during the land wars with a number of soldiers stationed here camping in the grounds. Just inside the entrance way into the church are two of the wooden gravestones that mark the passing of some of the soldiers during the battles, although one was accidentally shot by his own side, rather sad really.

The church and it’s grounds are a must for a wander around whilst you are here and although this is the 3rd church that has been erected on this site it’s still has a very historic feel to it. The cemetery is still in use by the locals today with a few fresh graves evident.

All in all I am disappointed with myself that it’s taken me so long to come and visit here and when I consider that in the late 1970’s I lived not to far from here there really is no excuse. So I write this blog to absolve my sins and suggest that you come and visit yourselves it’s a really interesting place.

That night I wanted to stay somewhere that had good quality cellphone signal so I could upload some photos and continue writing a blog I was working on. Since we had one more place to visit south of Kawakawa I said to Sarah that we should spend the night at the Whangaruru Beachfront Campground. This campground is directly across the water from my favourite DOC Camp, Puriri Bay.

On the day we visited the camp managers were still concerned about how dry the grounds where and given the size of our van they wanted us to park on the driveway, this created the rather embarrassing situation that in an empty campground we had to park right next to someone else. They however were really good about it and we still had 3 metres between us.

At $30 for the night with power using the NZMCA discount it was great value for such a great view right on the water. Unlike Puriri Bay across the water which has great signal however the cell tower here is hidden by the hills so there is almost no signal, there is thankfully free WIFI so I was able to get my work completed.

The following morning we wandered along the beach which also serves as a road when the tide is a little lower to the settlement of Ohawini. It’s here that when we have stayed on the other side that we have watched the car headlights at night working there way along the coastline or watched the fabulous sunset in the hills behind. From here it’s onto our final destination on the tour the Ruapekapeka Pa one of the largest and best preserved Maori Pa sites in New Zealand.

Right away I called my agent and he later called me back and stated I didn't have collision coverage and I would have to pay out of pocket for my damage. I left it at that but was very upset with him because he stated that I didn't have collision coverage and I told him that as a professional insurance agent, he should have told me that I needed full coverage on this practically new car!!! My boyfriend and I were at a stop light the light turned green. We started to go (this area is under contraction so the lanes are all messed up). The car in front of stops then hits their braks so did my boyfriend but it was to late we hit her. The car started to coast back and hit us again. Then we tryed to pull of to the side. We realized that it was a chain reaction. Car #1 was hit by car #2, car #3 hit car # 2 and we hit car #3 in that order. We did not launch all the cars together. I did call the police and we got the stupidest officer there was that pretty much wrote the story up wrong. At the sence everyone was agreeing what happend. The woman we hit was a 77 year old lady. The first thing she when she got out of the car was she couldn't get her car in gear. (I don't know why it was out of gear but ok) Car #1 and Car #2 said they weren't going to do anything about their cars insurance company wise. Car #2 I'm sure will be going after the older woman in Car #3. The older woman said since it was likely the bumper would just buff out it was ok for my boyfriend to do that for her. But he said he would not touch the front of her car. (After talking to the insurace company they said my boyfriend fixxing it is a bad idea) My boyfriends car is the worse out of all of them it smashed in hood in, and broke the radatior brakets. (His car sat higher then hers and thats why it smashed it) The cop did try to write my boyfriend a ticket but the woman said it wasn't his fault the other cars hit before he hit Car #3. How will the insurance company handle this? What will happen to our car? We have Geico inusrance will no colistion insurance. Donald B. Keck

Hearing Dr. Keck was an enlightening experience. Seeing him take us through the milestones he achieved in his life and how he worked in Corning to invent the low-loss fiber whose benefits we take for granted was an extra-ordinary experience. It made the internet, as it is of now, possible and we use it every single day because of his and his team’s efforts while he worked at Corning. His presentation highly motivated me to pursue my dreams. One of the advices he gave during the really struck me was “Be good at something, have a dream, and someone to share it with”. This really resonates with how I see my goals in life and how I go about seeing pursuing them. I believe I’m good at math and anything that firmly involves logic like my major Computer Science. I do like other subjects such as physics, and even philosophy but I don’t consider myself to be as good at them. I believe my best bet would be to “…have a dream…” in theoretical computer science because that’s the conjunction of subjects I’m good at.

What I learned from his work was to always shoot for perfection, while staying realistic. He believed that it was possible to reduce the attenuation in the fiber that Bob Maurer had. He researched different cores in the fibers to finally come up with optimal core type to amplify the power along the fiber which resulted in extremely low power loss. That is the kind of attitude I hope to achieve with my work in future. He demonstrated curiosity and desire to gain more knowledge which is one the 5 skills that innovative leaders have according Katherine G. Lewis. "These leaders will actively take the initiative to learn new information, which demonstrates engagement and loyalty to company goals" (Lewis 3). Dr. Keck's research and desire to improve the design demonstrates exactly what Lewis writes in her article. Not only that, Dr. Keck's attitude very closely resembles to how the article "The innovator's DNA" describe the skills common among innovators. Skills such as Associating, Questioning and Observing are prominent qualities of Dr. Keck as evident by his work at Corning. These skills are also found in George's article "8 Characteristics of the Innovative Leader". While talking about how a common person is led astray he says "It is simple to fall into the trap of doing things that have always been done, or simply going with what you know" (George 2). Avoiding this trap is what separates innovators like Dr. Keck from common people.

This also resonates with how I go about my word. I strive for perfection and efficiency when I write my code for my programming classes. I also hope to employ these skills when I hope to develop caption glasses. I want to decrease the error rate that speech recognition softwares have just like how Dr. Keck worked to decreases the power loss in fiber from 20db/km to almost zero.

In 1978, Corning predicted that the world will be in high demand for optical fiber in the future and they built a factory early on, which worked completely in their favor as their prediction was certainly correct and they are the now leading producer of the fiber. Also, they ran into some issues some companies tried to use their technology but they sued them and beat them in their race for production. Corning also demonstrated two other skills that innovative leaders have namely, "Seizing the oppprtunity" and "Maintaining a strategic business perspective".

This showed that for me to be successful and number I have to take risks and predict the future. I have to stay ahead of the pact and keep improving my product. This is also why I want to do PhD in computer science so I can research and stay informed about the latest technologies that are taking place in world now and that might take place in future. My reseach can help me shape the future.

To wrap the presentation, Dr. Keck list five steps of innovation which were really served as an important guideline for me.

These five steps resonate with few of the habits of mind that we covered in class during the 2nd week. "Gathering data through all senses", "Creating, Imagining, and Innovating" and "Taking responsible risks" are few that seemingly similar.

I hope to implement lessons learned from his life story and definitely the 5 steps for innovation.

Lastly, I wish to him few questions to help me better understand his work ethic and his DNA (as an innovator).

Out of all the projects/researches that had been going on in the world after you graduated, how did you know that working towards optic fiber was the right decision?

.We discussed in our class that the innovations we come up with should be practical and realistic. There is no way you could've imagined fast speed internet in 70's. Did you ever doubt that you were shooting for something unrealistic or seemingly impossible?

Who is your Idol? Which celebrity or personality do you look up to, and why?

15 Awesome Things To Do in Portland Oregon

The City of Roses, PDX, Rip City, Bridge Town, or Portlandia. Whatever you call it, Portland is one of the best cities to visit in the USA. With several excellent parks, a thriving music and art scene, and an abundance of food trucks and breweries, there’s no shortage of fun things to do in Portland Oregon!

A popular slogan here is “Keep Portland Weird,” as the city and its residents are known for their creativity and independence. The city hosts funky annual events like the World Naked Bike Ride and the Adult Soapbox Derby. It’s also home to places like the Freakybuttrue Peculiarium and a vacuum museum. Need I say more?

Weirdness aside, there are plenty of awesome Portland attractions to visit, from one of the largest urban parks in the country to a French Renaissance mansion. Add in all the museums, galleries, markets, and live music venues, and you’ll never be bored when traveling in Portland.

I’ve been all over the country and Portland is hands-down one of my favorite American cities to visit. What can I say? I’m a sucker for the great outdoors, efficient public transportation, and craft beer.

Let’s get this show on the road and check out some of the awesome things to do in Portland Oregon!

1. Join a Portland Walking Tour

Get to know the city known as Portlandia by taking a walking tour. There are several different options for exploring the best that PDX has to offer on foot.

Portland Walking Tours runs their Best of Portland tour daily and it’s the perfect intro to the city.

On this entertaining and informative tour, you’ll learn why Portland is considered one of the best cities to call home in the US. After the tour, you might want to move there! Tours run daily at 10 AM and again at 2 PM on weekends in spring and every day during summer. Tickets cost $23 for adults and $9 for kids. That’s not all, though. They have plenty of other awesome tours to choose from, including Street Food Tour, Beyond Bizarre, and We Got Tipsy in Portland. Check out the links for all the details and to book tickets online. Going on one of these tours is definitely one of the most fun things to do in Portland.

2. Visit Pioneer Courthouse Square

Dubbed the “living room” of the city, this has been a central gathering place in Portland for 35 years.

One interesting feature of the square is that there are over 70,000 bricks with names on them. Citizens and businesses purchased the bricks with donations of $15 to help fund the square’s construction in the early ’80s.

Inside the square, you’ll find the Waterfall Fountain and several different artworks. One of the most famous is Allow Me, which depicts a businessman offering his umbrella. The square is also home to the Weather Machine – a sculpture that predicts the following day’s weather at noon with a bit of fanfare.

There are over 300 events that take place in the square throughout the year. From concerts to fitness classes to movie screenings, there’s a lot going on here. Be sure to check their calendar of events to see what’s happening.

Pioneer Courthouse Square is also home to an information center where you can get tons of info on the various Portland attractions.

3. Enjoy Washington Park

One of the top Portland attractions to visit is Washington Park. Actually, this massive park is several attractions rolled into one. There’s so much going on here that the park could be its own list of things to do in Portland Oregon!

In the City of Roses, you should start your visit to the park at the International Rose Test Garden. There are over 10,000 rose bushes here, and they’re in bloom between April and October. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, they also run free public tours every day at 1 PM.

The park is also home to the beautiful Portland Japanese Garden. It features eight unique garden areas, as well as a Cultural Village where you can immerse yourself in Japanese culture. Tickets cost $18.95 for adults and $13.50 for children (click here to book them online).

We haven’t even scratched the surface of all that’s on tap in the sprawling Washington Park. Here you’ll also find the Children’s Museum, the Hoyt Arboretum, and so much more. With over 15 miles of trails, it’s also a great place to enjoy a bit of hiking in the city. Check their website for a detailed look at all the various attractions.

The park is open daily from 5 AM to 10 PM. You can easily reach the park by light rail. From May to October, there’s also a free shuttle that makes a loop of the park, stopping at the top attractions. Click here for directions to Washington Park.

4. Go Museum Hopping

While you can easily fill your days outdoors in Portland, it does tend to rain up here in the Pacific Northwest. Thankfully there are several great museums you can add to your list of things to do in Portland Oregon for those inevitable rainy days.

One of the best choices is the Portland Art Museum, which is known for its impressive collections of Native American and Asian art. They’re always adding exciting new exhibitions, so be sure to check their website to see what’s currently on display.

The art museum is open from 10-5 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. It’s closed on Monday but stays open until 8 on Thursday and Friday. Tickets cost $20 for adults and children 17 & under are totally free. Click here to get directions.

Right across the street, you’ll find the Oregon Historical Society. This fun, interactive museum aims to make the history of the state both visible and accessible to visitors. Here you can learn all about the people, places, and events that have shaped the state of Oregon. It’s open from 10-5 Monday to Saturday and noon-5 on Sunday. Tickets to the museum cost $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

Remember how I said the city has a slogan that goes “Keep Portland Weird”? Well, that definitely applies here, as you’ll also find museums dedicated to hats, puppets, toys, and even vacuum cleaners…

5. Visit Powell’s City of Books

This may be hard to believe in the year 2020, but one of the top things to do in Portland Oregon is hanging out in a bookstore. This isn’t just any old bookstore, though — Powell’s City of Books is the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world!

The store takes up an entire city block, and it’s composed of nine color-coded rooms with over 3,500 sections. They claim to buy over 3,000 used books every day and house up to one million at any given time! The place is so massive that they actually hand out maps to help you find your way around.

Drop into Powell’s, grab a coffee, and peruse this one-of-a-kind collection. A major highlight is their Rare Book Room that’s full of antique furniture and several thousand of their most valuable and unique books. Be sure to take a look at their calendar of events before you visit to see what’s going on here.

Powell’s City Books is open daily from 9 AM-11 PM. They run free guided tours every Sunday at 10 if you happen to be in town over the weekend. Click here to get directions.

6. Visit Huge and Tiny Parks

If you’re like me and would rather be hiking in the forest than walking through the concrete jungle, be sure to pay a visit to Forest Park. Located just a short trip west of downtown, this massive urban forest covers over 5,000 acres. It’s one of the biggest in the country and one of the best Portland attractions to experience.

Stretching for around 8 miles on the eastern slopes of the Tualatin Mountains and overlooking the Williamette River, this is an incredibly scenic area. It’s located just a short drive from downtown Portland, allowing you to experience a true Northwest forest within the city limits.

Forest Park is home to an astounding 70 miles (about 110 km) of trails. The Wildwood Trail section of the famous 40-Mile-Loop that goes around the city is a part of the park if you want to do some serious walking. You can see a map of all the various trailheads with descriptions on their website.

The park is open every day from 5 AM-10 PM. They also frequently do guided tours of the park, so you’ll want to take a look at their calendar to see if you can join one. If so, it’s definitely worth adding to your list of things to do in Portland.

A classic example of Portland’s famous weirdness is the fact that the city is home to the world’s smallest park. Mils End Park covers just 452 squares inches (0.292 square meters), so it won’t take you long to visit! Oh yeah, and it was dedicated on St. Patrick’s Day as “the only leprechaun colony west of Ireland” as well. Click here to get directions to this hilarious tiny park.

7. Wander Around Chinatown

While it’s not as famous as its counterparts in New York or San Francisco, Portland’s Chinatown is well worth a visit. It’s also known as Old Town, which is a fitting name seeing as how it’s the city’s oldest neighborhood.

At the corner of NW 4th Ave. and W Burnside St, you’ll find the Chinese gate and lion statues. After snapping a photo there, you can head a block north to check out the Portland Chinatown Museum. It’s open Thursday-Sunday from 12-5 in the summer and costs $8 for adults or $5 for children.

Without a doubt, the highlight of this part of Portlandia is the Lan Su Chinese Garden. It was built after Suzhou became a sister city of Portland, as it’s famous for its traditional gardens. The Chinese name translates as “Garden of the Awakening Orchids,” and it’s an absolutely gorgeous place to spend a few hours.

The Chinese garden is open daily at 10 AM, and their closing hours depend on the season. They stay open until 7 PM during the summer months, but close as early as 4:00 in the winter. Ticket prices vary as well, costing $12.95 for adults and $9.95 for kids in the summer months. Check their event calendar to see what’s happening and be sure to drop by their lovely tea house as well.

8. Eat at The Food Trucks (one of the best things to do in Portland for foodies)

One of the tastiest things to do in Portland Oregon is eating your way across the city’s countless food trucks. Portlandia boasts an impressive 500+ different food trucks, which are grouped into pods all over the city.

Unfortunately, the biggest food truck pod in Portland recently had to close down. The 10th and Adler pod was previously known as the largest concentration of street food in America, so it’s sad to see it go.

These days, one of the best spots to get a variety of street food is the pod on 3rd and Washington (click here for directions). Take your pick from around 20 carts cooking up Mexican, Korean, Egyptian, Greek, and much more.

Another excellent choice is Cartopia in East Portland. It’s mostly a late-night spot, so it’s the perfect place to grub down after a big night out on the town.

9. Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

We’ve already covered a few parks, but it’s definitely worth adding another one. The Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in southeast Portland is a beautiful place to escape to for a few hours.

Founded back in 1950 as a test garden, it currently has over 2,500 rhododendrons, azaleas, and many other plants. It’s set on Crystal Springs Lake and features several paths that lead you around the garden. This is the spot for your own personal moment of zen in Portlandia.

In addition to all the pretty flowers, this is also a great spot for some bird watching. There are over 100 species of birds and other animals here, including ducks, blackbirds, sparrows, heron, and more.

The garden can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time to see the rhododendrons is between late April and early May. They have two large events during this time — the Rhododendron & Daffodil Show and then a larger one over Mother’s Day weekend.

It’s free to visit from October 1-February 28 and always free on Monday. From March 1 to September 30, they charge $5 admission for adults. The garden is open from dawn to dusk year-round. Click here to get directions.

10. Watch Live Music

While it may not be as famous as its neighbour, Seattle, there’s a solid live music scene in PDX as well. Portland has music venues of all shapes and sizes and there are shows going on every night of the week here.

From local bands trying to make a name for themselves at dive bars to big-name headliners playing at the arena, there are plenty of options for rocking out in Portlandia.

Some of the best places to catch live music include Doug Fir Lounge, Roseland Theater, Crystal Ballroom, and Mississippi Studios.

11. Pittock Mansion

One of the most popular Portland attractions is the Pittock Mansion. This 46-room mansion was built in 1914 in both Victorian and French Renaissance architectural styles.

This gorgeous mansion was home to Henry Pittock, published in the Oregonian newspaper, and his wife Georgiana. He chose the location on the West Hills above Portland for the panoramic views of the city, river, and mountains.

Unfortunately, they both passed away within five years of moving in. The house remained in the family for decades, but it sustained serious damage during a storm and was almost demolished. Locals helped raise nearly $70,000 to protect the property and the city of Portland eventually bought it and turned it into a museum.

The Pittock Mansion is open daily from 10 AM-5 PM during the summer and closes an hour earlier the rest of the year. It’s actually closed for the entire month of January as well. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $8 for children. Be sure to check their website to read more about their different options for tours.

12. Shop At The Saturday Market

If you’re in town on a weekend, you’ll definitely want to add a trip to the Saturday Market to your list of fun things to do in Portland. This bustling arts & crafts market is the largest of its kind in the entire United States and is a really fun place to explore.

The market is located on the west side of the river right under the Burnside Bridge. While you’re in the area, you can also check out some popular spots for photos such as the Skidmore Fountain and the famous White Stag sign. Click here to get directions.

It’s open every weekend from March through to Christmas Eve. On Saturday the hours are 10 AM-5 PM and they’re also open on Sunday from 11-4:30. In the week leading up to Christmas, it becomes the “Festival of the Last Minute” — the perfect place for slackers to finish up that holiday shopping!

There’s a lot going on at the Portland Saturday Market, so you can easily spend a few hours there. In addition to the wide variety of vendors, they also have a kids corner, live music, and a food court. Head to their website to find out what’s going on while you’re in town.

13. Ride Across Bridges

In addition to its weirdness, Portland is also known for its bridges and cycling. Why not go ahead and combine the two? After all, Portland is known as the most bike-friendly city in the country and Bridge Town is one of its many nicknames.

First up, you’re going to need some wheels. BIKETOWN is the city’s bike-share program and it’s very easy to get started. Just sign up, unlock the bike, ride, and lock it back up when you’re finished. There are over 1,000 bikes and 100 stations around the city, so they’re always easy to find. For visitors, you can just pay a $5 sign-up fee and then $0.08 per minute. If you’d rather experience the city with a group, you can sign up for one of the excellent Pedal Bike Tours. On their classic Intro to Portland tour, you’ll get a fun crash course on PDX. Along the way, you get to enjoy some awesome views of the river and the many bridges that span it.

Tours cost $49 per person and last for 3 hours. You’ll ride about 9 miles in total but it’s mostly flat terrain. They also have a few other tours that focus on some of the finer things Portland is famous for — doughnuts and beer. Speaking of Homer Simpson’s favorite things, that brings us to the final items our list of things to do in Portland…

14. Experience Beervana

As if Portland didn’t have enough freaking nicknames, let’s add another one to the list — Beervana. This one is deserved, though, as the metro area is home to an astounding 100+ breweries! Don’t believe me? Just click here to see the official count.

With so much delicious beer to choose from, where does one start? You can join the aforementioned Oregon Brewery Trail tour with Pedal, where you’ll visit three different brewpubs. These tours cost $69 and last for three hours.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, check out one of the options from BrewGroup PDX. Their BrewCycle tours are done on party bikes that can seat 6, 11, or 15 and are tons of fun. You also have the option of getting out in the water on their BrewBardge pedal-powered boats. Tours cost between $30-40 depending on which one you choose and the day of the week. If you’d rather walk than cycle, the folks at BeerQuest have the perfect tour for you. Their award-winning brewery tour also has three stops, and you get 11 different samples! Tours cost $48 per person and run on Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM. Click here to book online.

15. Doughnuts Galore!

You can’t leave Portland without eating some donuts, too! The obsession with fried dough in Portland started out with Voodoo Doughnuts. Known for their eclectic decor and unconventional toppings (Cap’n Crunch, dried chili, bacon, etc.), this place is a local legend.

There’s almost always an hour-long line, and many locals will dismiss it as being “for tourists” these days, but it’s worth it to try the famed doughnuts at least once! Their Old Town location is even open 24/7, so you can satisfy your sweet tooth after a night of bar-hopping if you want.

Another solid option for satisfying your doughnut craving is Blue Star. They’ve got some wild flavors here, such as Blueberry Bourbon Basil and Mexican Hot Chocolate. These are definitely some high-end doughnuts here. Both Blue Star and Voodoo have several locations across Portland, so you’re never too far from some delicious fried dough.

Ready for All the Awesome and Weird Things To Do in Portland?!

Well that does it. If you weren’t sold on traveling to Portland already, I’m sure the beer and doughnuts sealed the deal! At least you’ll be doing plenty of hiking and cycling to walk off all those calories!

Writing this guide reminds me of how much I love Portland. Although I visit frequently, I haven’t lived in the US in over a decade now and don’t really plan on moving back, but if I did, Portlandia would be high on my list. It’s a beautiful city surrounded by nature, you can get everywhere on public transport or by bike, and it has a vibrant culture that’s all its own.
