Steve was so cozy, so warm and toasty. Sleep was pulling him back under when his evil, cruel and mean boyfriend decided to jump on him!

"Edward fucking Munson, what the fuck."

"Stevie, my sweet love, I wish fucking was my middle name, but get up, it's snowing!"

Ok, maybe his boyfriend was actually very cute and adorable and could be forgiven for rudely waking him up barely past 6. Both the boys had been waiting for today, sharing an enthusiasm for the frozen crystal delights.

Snow days had been a favourite of Eddie's growing up; there was no school, and everyone wanted to play, even with the freak. Wayne had built him a sled his first winter with him, and he fondly remembered spending hours going down the hill behind the trailer park.

Steve's memories of snow days weren't so happy. Snow days meant being stuck at home with his parents if they were around, and his mother never let him play in the snow, not wanting him to come in wet. His first real snow day had been with Robin the previous year, who goaded him into ambushing the kids into a snowball fight.

A winter coat pulled over their pyjamas, the boys huddled outside and watched the first few flecks of white fall down around them. The cold air was already reddening their cheeks, and the snowflakes littered their hair, but it was perfect.

"Thanks for waking me, Eds."

Eddie's fingers tightened around Steve's as he smiled at him, "No one I'd rather share it with, sweetheart."

Mirror!Neelix & Mirror!Kes Thoughts: Shared theme of destruction. Leaning further into Kes' 'insect' vibes where the Ocampa are actually a locust-like species that require a near constant source of food, though any food will do (it doesn't have to be a cooked dish). The caretaker was able to satisfy that but since Kes is alone now she finds that she's hungry a good deal of the time. Ocampa have been known in the past to cannibalize one another if there isn't another source of food. Also, I can imagine Mirror!Kes playing into the fact that other species view her age as being very young and pretending to be naive or in need of help in order to get others to let their guard down. Manipulative and often irritated by others. Despite playing into the fact that others might see her as a child, she deeply resents it. Lashes out in covert ways which she can deny. Wants to unlock her telepathic abilities to gain more power. Views herself as special and above others for being able to reach the surface. Mirror!Neelix I can imagine as having a direct hand in the destruction of his home and family. Basically, he became a soldier instead of running away. Has a poor reputation with other Talaxians because of this which he resents. Is still deeply sad about the deaths of his family but tries not to think about them at all. Also unlike regular Neelix who somewhat oversells his abilities, Mirror!Neelix undersells them. Much more lethargic and outwardly jaded/bitter than regular Neelix. Intentionally poisons Voyager's crew on a monthly basis but not Janeway or Chakotay and never lethally so she doesn't kick him off. Can make amazing dishes but often intentionally ruins them. (Good food is a special treat). Obviously dislikes his lot in life and enjoys bringing others down. Finds Tuvok intriguing because he seems immune to this. ('I want to make him happy!' is mirrored as 'I want to make him sad!') Since Voyager's Mirrored goal in my mind is 'conquer' instead of 'explore' - they often see Kes & Neelix as nuisances since they don't seem to care at all about growing their influence or being feared throughout the quadrant at first. However, Kes quickly learns to like conquering and power and grows to admire both Janeway and Tuvok. Neelix doesn't much care about conquering so much as he wants to mooch off Voyager's resources and make others miserable. Eventually becomes attached to Voyager's crew but that doesn't mean he'll poison their food any less, especially if he hears them complaining. Even after this change they're still viewed as nuisances because they don't care about any command structure except for 'Appease the Captain'.

In either Hidden Depths or Shattered Dreams, which trope, theme, or element did you choose NOT to include, and why? Was it a deliberate choice or did it just happen that way?

This is a little complicated for me to answer for both works :')

For Shattered Dreams, I had no concept of elements or themes (really, i still don't 😅, kate has promised to tell me what they are when she betas for me lol), and wasn't familiar with tropes at all. I really just wanted this one particular scene, and made up an entire world and plot to get to it. I only came up with tropes after the fact for a marketing exercise lol

So, aside from resisting the impulse to add another noncon scene at the end of the book, I added everything I thought fit the story and then some :)

For Hidden Depths, I was writing entirely for the specific tropes and themes put out for Whumptober 2022. There weren't any I wish I could do this instead of that moments, it was here's these 31 days of prompts, how can I group them together in order to tell a half-way decent story. I didn't have time to do anything else XD

Later, I wished I could've picked on Carr a little more, so I wrote the AU for that :D (does that count? an after the fact thing? I guess it just happened that way if so; it certainly wasn't deliberate)

STRANGER THINGS — 4.01: the hellfire club

i might write this out one day but like. probably not so in the meantime: a somewhat steve centric stranger things pirate au that gets less and less canon as it goes, because its me:

steve is the son of someone wealthy (merchant? governor? king? doesn’t matter!) and courting the lady nancy wheeler

nancy’s handmaiden barbara goes missing from a party at steve’s estate, where she was taken from the dock

nancy and jonathan team up to find her and will, who’s missing too

theyve been taken by a cursed ship (a la potc flying dutchman) captained by the legendary no-longer-human henry creel, who’s supposed to ferry the dead but abused his position as immortal psychopomp to rule the seas with an iron fist

(logically the ship would be called the upside down but that sounds fucking dumb so. im leaning towards The Black Widow but idk im taking suggestions ig)

meanwhile el has escaped from this ship, and meets up with a gang of kids

in this au, instead of the canon interest in fantasy, i think the kids are super into like. romanticised pirate legends

instead of “the party” they call themselves “The Crew”

steve follows nancy and jonathan, fearing for nancy’s safety with “that byers creep” and comes in just in time to help nancy and jonathan as they battle aboard The Black Widow

nancy and jon manage to negotiate steve and will’s release (rip barb) in return for their souls, and are trapped on the ship ~forever oOoOO~

except that steve and the kids are not satisfied with this at all, and with the help of merchant’s step-daughter Maxine Mayfield they steal a boat (but not before some weirdly homoerotic (in a rancid way) conflict between steve and billy) and set sail in pursuit of The Black Widow

along the way they pick up navigator Robin Buckley, who initially clashes with steve but bonds with him when they are captured and tortured by The Soviet, another ship chasing The Black Widow for their power

also at this time el is sailing with her sister kali upon The Children’s Revenge, who are hunting Creel bc their family/friends/crewmates have been taken by him in the past

they eventually all reunite upon the deck of the black widow

along with eddie and chrissy, who were captured after eddie helped chrissy flee an arranged marriage to (barf) jason carver, and have been working w nancy and jon to try to mutiny. the issue: the new captain would be forced to Actually stay on the widow ~forever oOoOOo~

with the combined forces of platonic stobin&The Crew, el&kali, and jancy&platonic hellcheer, they are able to carry out the mutiny plan, and steve (coughMartyrcough) makes himself captain so that the others can leave

they refuse to leave

they dismiss all creel’s crewmen/prisoners (the demo-creatures, i think. also, the mind flayer is the kraken, it never came up but its true)

The Crew lives their dream of romantic piracy, ferrying souls instead of pillaging innocents (though they also bust slave ships, and occasionally sink other, crueler ships, be they pirates or navy officers), nancy and jonathan can serve justice (see above) and also be together, which wasnt an option bc jon was poor, and steve&robin and eddie&chrissy are living their platonic soulmate lives, + steddie and buckingham

i think about that sometimes too, but not in a little mermaid au, y’know? more in a she’s-sorta-witchy-so-she-can-change-between-tail-or-legs kind of way. a little bit like the mermaids in pirates of the caribbean too! a little evil and manipulative and likes playing mean tricks on people, sorta like fairies, and sorta like tinkerbell in that pouty / grumpy way of hers.

but she falls for stevie and he’s the only one she’s ever soft for… instead of playing tricks on him, she leaves him little gifts. instead of manipulating him into things, she praises him constantly. instead of using him, she becomes his protector. definitely plays evil pranks on whoever is mean to him.

she’s a grump, always serious, doesn’t socialize with anyone, maybe giving off some wednesday addams vibes? yeah, i like that. but she melts for her stevie, even though she tries to hide it— he can see right through her.

*slams sword back in* "oh fuck that."

Fantasy AU where Steve, in the process of mocking the Party trying to pull the legendary sword of the kingdom, pulls said sword.

He refuses to do anything with it and the kids, tired of pestering him to Fulfill the Prophecy, respond by hiring the local bard (Eddie) to follow Steve around until he gets off his ass and goes adventuring.

Eventually, Steve agrees to go on his epic quest. Only everything is absolutely ridiculous and not at all like it was supposed to be.

Highlights include:

The princess he was supposed to save (Nancy) having long saved herself with zero desire to return home (she's not done learning about the kingdom properly and is downright nasty with a bow)

The dragon Steve was supposed to defeat having keeled over ages ago leaving a baby dragon (Dart, who Dustin insists they keep) behind

And

Steve being under a curse from some evil villian for five entire seconds, because he needed to get "true loves first kiss" to break it and he just blinked, shrugged, and planted one on Eddie.

(Robin almost gets killed because she was laughing too hard to fight the villian right after but it was worth it.)
