Indian woman claims 39 men raped her

In a bizarre incident, an entire village in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district was up in arms against a 32-year-old woman who filed cases of rape against four identified and 35 unidentified persons at the cantonment police station. The villagers staged a protest outside the Superintendent of Police (SP) office against the alleged victim on Saturday. The protesters later met the circle officer Ashok Kumar, who assured them of an impartial investigation in the case. The villagers alleged that the woman had filed fake rape cases after her husband was asked to repay Rs0.25 million that he had borrowed from these 39 people. Earlier, the rape survivor had written to the senior superintendent of police (SSP), Bareilly, Shailesh Pandey, claiming that the villagers were forcing her to leave the village after she had filed a rape complaint. Ajay Kumar, the village head, told reporters: "The woman's husband is an alcoholic and has borrowed money from several people. He had promised to return the money after selling his property. But, when he sold his property and was asked to return the money, he used his wife to file a fake complaint. We all are ready to give our statement. Police must provide justice." SSP Shailesh Pandey said: "The investigation is currently underway. We have assured them that the probe will be done on fact and proof and ensured that no innocent person goes to jail." On December 17, the rape survivor had met SSP Bareilly and filed a complaint in which she alleged that she was thrashed and gang-raped by Amit, Shambhu, Chaman, and Pushpendra. She also alleged that these men also shot a video of the assault and had been forcing her to sleep with 35 others since the past one year. She had also alleged that one of the accused, Amit, stole Rs 50,000 from her house. Based on the complaint, police later filed an FIR against Amit, Shambhu, Chaman, Pushpendra and 35 unidentified people under IPC sections 376-D (gang-rape), 392 (robbery), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and section 66 of the Information and Technology Act. The rape survivor was later sent for medical examination, but none of the accused has been arrested so far. The police have not received the medical examination report as yet. The survivor visited the SSP office on December 23 and alleged that the villagers were forcing her to leave the village. Read the full article

Suresh Raina's uncle killed by robbers in Punjab's Pathankot; four members of family injured

Robbers attacked cricketer Suresh Raina's relatives' home in Punjab's Pathankot, killing his 58-year-old uncle while four other members of his family sustained injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar, a government contractor. According to police, the incident took place at Thariyal village in Punjab's Pathankot on the night intervening 19 and 20 August.

Kumar's elder brother Shyam Lal confirmed that the victim was the cricketer's uncle. He said Raina is expected to visit the village. Earlier, a senior police official had said they can't confirm the victim's relationship with the cricketer.

According to police, three to four members of the notorious 'Kale Kachhewala' gang had come with an intention to loot, attacked Ashok Kumar and his family members at their house in Thariyal village near Madhopur of Pathankot.

At the time of the attack, they were sleeping on the terrace of their house.

Ashok Kumar suffered head injuries and died on the same night, police said. Confirming Kumar's death, Pathankot Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneet Singh Khurana had earlier said he had no confirmation about the victim's relation with the cricketer. "We are investigating the matter," said the SSP.

According to police, robbers decamped with some cash and gold from the house.

Kumar's 80-year-old mother Satya Devi, his wife Asha Devi, sons Apin and Kuashal suffered injuries, said police.

While Satya Devi has been discharged from hospital, others are still undergoing treatment, said Pathankot Superintendent of Police Prabhjot Singh Virk.

UP police has launched its biggest encounter blitz after a pre-poll lull, Pratapgarh don Tauquir Hafiz, who was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head and dodging arrest for a year, was shot dead in an encounter on Thursday. While the Special Task Force gunned down the elusive don at dawn, police launched five other encounters against criminals in Kanpur, Barabanki and Azamgarh. Thursday’s encounter count of six is the highest this year, matching a similar record in March, 2018. Hafiz, 28, was wanted in more than 12 cases, including three murders and an attempt to murder. He was notorious for extorting money from traders and doctors through WhatsApp calls to avoid surveillance. He shot dead those who refused to cough up money. He had allegedly gunned down Pratapgarh trader Ashok Kumar on March 9 and earlier, on January 23, killed marble merchant Rajesh Singh in a similar fashion. IG (STF) Amitabh Yash told TOI that the force was tasked to nab the don after a flood of extortion complaints last month. Around 3am on Thursday, a tip-off about Hafiz’s presence in Kotwali thana area was received and a team, led by the SSP of STF, was mobilised. “The don was first intercepted near Antu police station, but he managed to escape on his bike.
