What laptop do you daily drive?
-@distrochooser
The laptop I daily drive happens to be the only one I own that works. It's a 2006 Dell Latitude D620.
I've upgraded it (because this thing was made before soldered parts were the norm) to 4gig's of ddr2 ram, an intel Core-2 Duo T7200 (2.0 gigahertz, and 4mb of cache), and a 512gb ssd. It also has a cdrw-dvdrom drive.
the f key is just a stub (I broke the key when cleaning the keyboard (I spilled dr pepper on it)). I need to get a new keyboard for it both because of the missing key and because no matter how much I clean the keyboard, the keys remain greasy and sticky.
I could go on about my computer for hours. I can even make some of my followers feel old, watch this:
my 2006 Dell is older than me :)

a lot of people, especially linux people who should know better, have a bizarre idea of how resource usage works. in a perfect dream world you should be at max utilization like all the time! like obviously you do want to keep some spare memory for new processes, but generally speaking unused ram is just a shitload of gates you already paid for that are, you guessed it, unused. it doesn't matter how efficiently you code, if you're dealing with large blobs you can always go faster by cacheing them. chrome will run ok with way less ram, the developers simply chose not to make it slow on purpose for no reason. cpu use is less of an unadulterated W because of power and downclocking but from a pure speed perspective higher cpu usage means you're not twiddling your thumbs waiting for IO to finish. if you want your cpu to idle more just switch your ssd out for a hard drive, see how much faster your machine runs

"free memory is wasted memory" yeah okay but you gotta have those caches ready to purge, I got other stuff to run.
yeah, throughput, latency, whatever. you don't need picoseconds, get over yourself. SSD message cache is FINE, discord

Thank you so so much for letting me share this with you and for your feedback ❤️!! So, my idea is that the gaming PC should be able to play all current and upcoming games on very or ultra-high settings without any issues (e.g. Alan Wake 2, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, etc.), be silent and not overheat quickly and have good airflow, and have space for expansions and/or upgrades.
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow RGB Edition, glass window, white CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 8x 4.2GHz, 96MB L3 cache or AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D, 12x 4.4GHz, 128MB L3-Cache => I'm a bit indecisive on which one here. Mainboard: Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX, AMD B650 Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 12GB, Gigabyte Aero OC RAM: 32GB DDR5-6000 Corsair Vengeance RGB, 2x 16GB, white SSD: 2TB Western Digital Black SN850X, read up to 7.300 MB/s Power supply: 850W Corsair RMe 2023, fully modular CPU cooler: Corsair iCUE H100i RGB Elite, white, 240mm
It's a bit on the pricey side, but I'm willing to order it if it can do well and I don't need to upgrade it in a bit, especially, because I don't think there'll be many more games with higher graphics as there are currently.
Hey love, that's a kickass build!!! I would go for the Ryzen 9 7900X3D instead. Simply because it's stronger and this is a purchase that should last you for a few years. Series 7 is great but there is a 10% more chance for a bottle neck.
My rule of thumb is always to go a bit over with the PSU because if your PSU dies, then it can take your entire PC with it. (It happened to me once, and it was painful!!!) Having said that, I think the minimum for 4070 RTX is 750W, but I would go with 900, perhaps just to be sure. It's not a must.
As for RAM. Go for 64. They are not that expansive and also DDR5 are incredible. I have the Vengence as well :).

Oooh im a new anon what brand/kind of memory i should get to start storing data? Like vids n movies
For brands: Seagate or Western Digital. Don’t drive yourself crazy like I did researching for days which is objectively “better” — they are both very solid and reliable brands, and the fact is that you can have a good or bad experience with either based on factors outside of anyone’s control. Hard drives fail — it’s a fact. There’s no way to permanently prevent this. Sooner or later your hardware will wear down, even from the best manufacturers, and all you can do is plan ahead of time for getting the longest life out of your drives by properly caring for them and have something planned to replace them when they inevitably fail. Hopefully after you’ve gotten some years of good use out of them first, but like I said there’s tons of factors.
For example, I ordered a 12 terabyte HDD from Seagate once for my server that was over $300 and it was dead on arrival. Wouldn’t work at all. But the warranty was for several years and customer service replaced it no problem and the 5+ other hard drives I’ve gotten from Seagate have been flawless. But sometimes, drives just die. You feel me?
But yeah, WD or Seagate. I’ve used both. Both are highly recommended
What kind: to keep things basic, you should consider either an HDD (hard disk drive) or SSD (solid state drive). For stuff you just want to back up and make sure it’s safe/you have copies, like videos and movies, pictures, music, documents, etc… you can go with an HDD. They are much cheaper, and ideal for storing files that aren’t accessed or modified frequently.
An SSD is going to be more expensive, and those are ideal for things like applications, games, your operating system….stuff that you interact with in real time, where loading time really matters and files can be being cached and changed and modified a ton within a short period of time. In this case, an SSD will feel significantly better and faster than an HDD
Hope this helps! Lemme know if I can answer anything else for ya

why does tiktok not let me follow new people
it hasn't in, like, several months, but before i thought it was a cache thing and i couldn't be arsed to clear my cache. but i got a new ssd, so obviously that rather forcibly cleared my cache, but tiktok still won't let me follow new people
if you only follow a handful of people and don't actually post anything, do they just assume you're a bot???

So. I have
Unicron, a large and spacious desktop with an ancient motherboard and aging i/o that works
Primus, a tight server-adjacent beast of an air purifier the computer shop gave me for free cause it doesn't work
My sata power adapter finally came in the mail. It's not doing anything. I believe it's possible to get Primus working, i really do. But probably not by me.
Now here's the other part of the problem:
Unicron is currently hosting all my files and i want it to also drive the 4k tv. It's running Linux of course. The graphics card is from before AMD bought ATI, the only way I can get video from it is a DVI-to-VGA adapter plugged DIRECTLY into a VGA cable going DIRECTLY into a 1080p monitor. Adapting to hdmi doesn't work, even tho the active adapter itself definitely does. The only graphics cards in town that go in old school PCI slots are worse than mine, and the pci-to-pcie adapters I'm seeing online look sketchy af. (are they? If you've used them please tell me if they work). I spent $200 on an rx6600 and at this point I'm almost ready to build a whole pc around it, just to have something with room to grow. Also transcoding maybe.
Now, I have several usb-C to hdmi adapters which require windows drivers. Unicron does not have usb-C ports. Unicron barely has USB 3 ports. I have exactly one (1) USB A to C high speed data adapter of the proper sexuality - which came with and is currently in use for the nvme enclosure I'm using for my cache drive. Because, to loop back around, Unicron doesn't have anywhere else to put an nvme ssd and i got sooo tired of using my sata ssds for this stuff also they might be too slow idk it doesn't matter.
Point is, I have these options:
do nothing and return nil
Put the extra ram + storage in Unicron and install Windows on it to make the USB display drivers work, then slap a linux vm on top and do everything in that. This is a lot of overhead especially for an older system, and introduceth lots of annoyances thruout the stack ex. networking
Unicron overhaul! Keep the case but upgrade everything else. Mostly straightforward but expensive but money is not a concern. We could even also do the windows thing too on top of it, wouldn't that be horrible.
Pick all the good bits off of Unicron and Primus and give them both to the repair shop, then just buy a new computer. Same as previous option but could be simpler depending on case compatibility.
Either way they're closed on sundays so i gotta wait to do stuff.
Hmm, maybe part of this post should have been a poll...

General Device Maintenance for Windows
It is common for people to think they need a new laptop or desktop after a few years of use, and it is running slow. However, I’m going to show you a few tricks that I have perfected over the years to help a machine run in tip top shape. These are especially great to do after you have been uninstalling and reinstalling video games on them or just general use from office activity. These are, in my professional experience, the General Maintenance your company should be running on their Windows machines once a year, but probably is not…
-Work Machine-
Please note that for any commands I’m referencing to with quotes, you will not enter the quotes, it’s just the industry standard when specifying a string of data. We’ve all been there, on a work machine and it’s locked down on the permissions. Great news, you can run “gpupdate /force” (Group Policy Update) from Command Prompt. It’s pretty fast and either works or gives you an error that you can screenshot and send to your Service Desk, saving a ton of time. Fundamentally what it does is checks with your company’s server to make sure your computer follows the parameters of the domain. It’s typically the first thing your IT person will run and can be done with any account.
-Personal Machine-
If you haven’t already done it, you should uninstall any Bloatware. This is software that came on your computer when you got it, you don’t necessarily need or use it and it doesn’t seem to contribute to how your computer runs the way you are going to use it. Navigate to the “uninstall a program” area of your Control Panel and you will see the list, then just right click > uninstall (sometimes with stuff like Office there is a “Repair” option). If you see “Wave Browser” while in the control panel you will want to get rid of that at once and run a malware scan; actually, if you see any program you don’t recognize, Google it and/or the publisher to check that it’s legitimate or see what it does. (Note: modern browsers have Java built in, you no longer need it installed on your machine.) You may also have to do it from what we used to call the “Start” area and have no idea why they changed it, er the windows icon and “All Apps”.
-Light Clean-
Clearing your temp folders might seem like it’s not that important, but the closer your SSD drive gets to 50% the slower it performs. This is the random cache your computer stores during regular use of moving files, installing programs, error logs…etc. You’d be surprised at just how junked up they can get, I’ve seen them take up to 8GB worth of data.
From any account: Go to start > Run and type in “%temp%”. (The actual path is “C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp”)
With administrative rights, follow the same steps but instead type “temp”.(“C:\Windows\Temp”)
-Update Drivers-
If it’s not one thing, it’s the drivers. Easiest way you can check is to look for a caution mark on one of the listed items in the Device Manger; you might have to drop down the tree. These are the kernel code that binds your operating system and programs with the motherboard. You can set them to auto update, but sometimes the list doesn’t synchronize. Some laptops such as Lenovo have a program that you can download from their website or find in the Microsoft Store like “Lenovo Vantage” and it can be ran from a user account. If you want to look for them yourself the command is: “wmic bios get serialnumber”. The top two to look for and download if they have a newer version are the BIOS and Firmware/Chipset Management Engine.
-More in Depth Commands-
(You will need administrative rights)
Similar to Linux there are terminal commands that are native to the Windows environment that you can run to improve your system. To run these, go to start > Command Prompt > right click > run as administrator:
#1 System File Checker = "sfc /scannow"
This one will take roughly 10 minutes but it’s safe to use the machine while it runs; however, I wouldn’t install anything while it goes. It basically goes through your filesystem and makes sure everything lines up the way it should be, the right system files point to the correct location and there’s no junk files that shouldn’t be there linking to something else. This is just layman’s term, and feel free to look into it more but I assure you it’s perfectly fine to run even if you don’t know what you’re doing.
#2 DISM = "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"
It can take 15 to 45 minutes, depending on how bad your machine is, but again it’s safe to use while it runs. This connects with the Microsoft servers responsible for updates and ensures that your operating systems image matches the lines of code it should have. You can actually do a lot with dism commands.
#3 Check Disk = "chkdsk /f /r /x" (stands for: find, repair, dismount)
Please note that you will not be able to use the machine until it’s finished running and it can take up to an hour. It should automatically restart your machine after entering it so make sure to save and close everything beforehand. It sometimes gets stuck at “100%, please do not turn off or restart your machine”, but it’s safe to hard reset (press the power button or pull cord). This checks your hard drive for any irregularities and makes sure nothing is corrupt or damaged. There are several ways to run this, however this is the one I find most useful as it runs it at a very low level right after bios when it is loading the kernel (code that makes hardware talk to software).
#4 Cipher = "cipher /w:c:\"
This one will take a while, like up to 2 hours, and I wouldn’t plan on using it, so it goes faster. For when you drastically want to really clean your hard drive to sell or donate This command wipes the dark void of the strange quarks files turn into after the recycling bin. Basically, preventing anyone from restoring anything you deleted and maximizing the free space available in some parts per million way. — And that’s pretty much it! There are a few snazzy programs that I will leave below to help keep your computer stay in shape and safe. Other than that, Congratulations!!! You could be an entry level IT person now.
Noteworthy programs: ATF Cleaner, JRT Remover, Glary Utilities, CCleaner and Malwarebytes

Hi mobi! I tried using Stremio and I like it, but I don't have a super fast internet connection and my gf has complained that when I watch stuff on Stremio it takes all our bandwith. Do you know how to limit the uploading/ascending speed perhaps? I tried looking it up for the torrentio add-on since it's the one I use but it didn't give me the option 🧐 Apologies if that's out of your zone! And thanks for the share anyway, it's super useful.
Sorry! Left you hanging for a while.
So the official Stremio page suggests tweaking these settings, instructions provided in the link... but streaming and downloading will always be a little bit intensive on your connection, though usually a 1Mbps speed is enough to stream something in ~720px without it buffering, so you can try capping it around there, with some headroom depending on how much spare bandwith you actually have.
Also, if you increase the cache size (which is in Settings>Streaming>Caching), you can leave it to load a little longer and it can load whilst you, idk, wash your dishes if you have the download speed limit set, and it can load in the background without stealing too much bandwidth, to watch without buffering when you're ready. (usually, aside from 1080p+ movies, 2GB will be all you need, but make sure you have enough room on the drive that it'll cache on... accidentally let Stremio take up 30GB on my SSD a couple weeks ago)
