Very much enjoyed Tracing Woodgrain's foray into the internet life of jilted ex-rationalist and Wikipedia editor David Gerard. It is of course "on brand" for me - the social history of the internet, as a place of communities and individual lives lived, is one of my own passion projects, and this slots neatly into that domain in more ways than one. At the object-level it is of course about one such specific community & person; but more broadly it is an entry into the "death of the internet-as-alternate-reality" genre; the 1990's & 2000's internet as a place separate from and perhaps superior to the analog world, that died away in the face of the internet's normalization and the cruel hand of the real.
Here that broad story is made specific; early Wikipedia very much was "better than the real", the ethos of the early rationalist community did seem to a lot of people like "Yeah, this is a new way of thinking! We are gonna become better people this way!" - and it wasn't total bullshit, logical fallacies are real enough. And the decline is equally specific: the Rationalist project was never going to Escape Politics because it was composed of human beings, Wikipedia was low-hanging fruit that became a job of grubby maintenance, the suicide of hackivist Aaron Swartz was a wake-up call that the internet was not, in any way, exempt from the reach of the powers-that-be. TW's allusion to Gamergate was particularly amusing for me, as while it wasn't prominent in Gerard's life it was truly the death knell for the illusion of the internet as a unified culture.
But anyway, the meat of the essay is also just extremely amusing; someone spending over a decade on a hate crusade using rules-lawyering spoiling tactics for the most petty stakes (unflattering wikipedia articles & other press). The internet is built by weirdos, and that is going to be a mixed bag! It is beautiful to see someone's soul laid bare like this.
It can be tempting to get involved in the object-level topics - how important was Lesswrong in the growth of Neoreaction, one of the topics of Gerard's fixations? It was certainly, obviously not born there, never had any numbers on the site, and soon left it to grow elsewhere. But on the flip side, for a few crucial years Lesswrong was one of the biggest sites that hosted any level of discussion around it, and exposed other people to it as a concept. This is common for user-generated content platforms; they aggregate people who find commonalities and then splinter off. Lesswrong's vaunted "politics is the mindkiller" masked a strong aversion to a lot of what would become left social justice, and it was a place for those people to meet. I don't think neoreaction deserves any mention on Lesswrong's wikipedia page, beyond maybe a footnote. But Lesswrong deserves a place on Neoreaction's wikipedia page. There are very interesting arguments to explore here.
You must, however, ignore that temptation, because Gerard explored fucking none of that. No curiosity, no context, just endless appeals to "Reliable Source!" and other wikipedia rules to freeze the wikipedia entries into maximally unflattering shapes. Any individual edit is perhaps defensible; in their totality they are damning. My "favourite" is that on the Slate Star Codex wikipedia page, he inserted and fought a half-dozen times to include a link to an academic publication Scott Alexander wrote, that no one ever read and was never discussed on SSC beyond a passing mention, solely because it had his real name on it. He was just doxxing him because he knew it would piss Scott off, and anyone pointing that out was told "Springer Press is RS, read the rules please :)". It is levels of petty I can't imagine motivating me for a decade, it is honestly impressive!
He was eventually banned from editing the page as some other just-as-senior wikipedia editor finally noticed and realized, no, the guy who openly calls Scott a neo-nazi is not an "unbiased source" for editing this page wtf is wrong with you all. I think you could come away from this article thinking Wikipedia is ~broken~ or w/e, but you shouldn't - how hard Gerard had to work to do something as small as he did is a testament to the strength of the platform. No one thinks it is perfect of course, but nothing ever will be - and in particular getting motivated contributors now that the sex appeal has faded is a very hard problem. The best solution sometimes is just noticing the abusers over time.
Though wikipedia should loosen up its sourcing standards a bit. I get why it is the way it is, but still, come on.

The story so far part 1:
(ooc note: she's part of an actual campaign, which this is an attempted retelling of)
First of all, we were woken up from cryo sleep on an MSMC ship. Our commander, Mahon, and his quiet NHP Raythe were there. Me, Sai May, Sven, and Bulwark were put into a simulated king of the hill thingy which we all passed with flying colors. Mahon was a little weirded out by me hopping out, but meh.
Our job here on the planet that isn't Sinker is to be neutral-ish liasons and bodyguards to the various corporations and also the government here while people negotiate what happens here. It's on the border of neutral and HA space or something so people are arguing about what to do with it.
I went out on the town and found a weird videogame in a net cafe. Hyper realistic depictions of the actual neighborhoods and stuff so I was a bit weirded out.
So after getting our bearings our next job was to run a gauntlet set up by the governments and corporations to prove our worth or something. I didn't really get it, but me and Tahba got to hit things, which was fun. The last scenario was by HA and involved live opposition who we ended up having to kill because we won too fast and annoyed the rep. Tahba deployed a program called "dog in hot car.exe" to deal with them, which was... concerning. Still, watching Harrison mechs cooking off is funny.
Everyone involved was suitably impressed, so we got to take another break. Then we went to some party where everyone else was dressed funny and we got portioned out to whoever we're going to guard now. I got Kresva Tay, the SSC rep. Sven got the governor, Sai May got the HA lady, and Bulwark got what I think is an actual pirate.
The SSC lady even gave me a neurospike after I stared at her and said please for most of the party. Sai May called me pathetic for that, but if it works it works.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today was long. But I am home and I am very happy to be here. I have eaten almost all of the things I was craving so very badly last night. And today would be a better day. Last night sucked. Like hardcore. I was so upset. And I would continue to be alone. CJ didn't come back until I was asleep. And I would wake up for a moment but was so tired I just passed right back out.
I woke up when her alarm went off but I would fall back asleep for most of an hour. And I felt alright when I got up. I washed my face and packed a bunch of my stuff. Things I will need for vacation next week mainly. But I had my two backpacks and my water cup and then I was off.
I walked up to the office. It has taken me a while I get myself together. But I stopped at the office to use the bathroom before going to art.
When I got up there Jess was texting me telling me all about the Microsoft issue today. The whole world seemed to slow down. Not at camp but everywhere else. It was like I was the only one holding that info.
I would walk back to the office and told everyone that a security issue has caused basically every plane in the US to be grounded. And that businesses can't use credit cards. And screens aren't working. And systems aren't working. And people, campers and counselors, throughout the day thought I was goofing. But I wasn't! It was really happening.
Jess wouldn't be affected to much. James would be because of credit cards and ticket purchasing on the website. But thankfully everything at camp seemed normal.
The only issue I was really having was that no videos were loading. My Spotify wouldn't load. TikTok wouldn't load. It was very very annoying.
I tried to just chill but I ended up taking a walk and chatting with people and would honestly feel a lot better after that. I even talked to CJ and she apologized for hurting my feelings. And it helped me really let go of my hurt. I don't feel emotionally tied to staying at camp. We are good.
And I would have a good day. All of my groups were great. And we used the majority of the bears!! There was for sure a few kids who wanted a specific color I did not have or a size I didn't have anymore. But mostly everyone was lovely and had a lot of fun.
I enjoyed the counselors company and help. I had more interactions with people today and that helped a lot. I got to help with some super hero costumes and it was so nice to be able to provide costume stuff! Felt good. Made me feel a part of everything.
I braided my hair pretty early on. And I really liked how I did it and felt very cute. The day would feel lighter and better and I would have so much more of an easy day.
Lunch kind of sucked. With someone who wouldn't stop talking over me. And the SSC being rude when I asked for food. It was a whole weird vibe.
So I left. And walked with Louisa to the office so I could ask Alexi about who was covering art next week. And the decision is Avery. She's wonderful and very competent so I know she will do a great job.
I would do some more spoon prep. Painting them different shades. And would lay in my hammock for a while. It was a calm day.
My afternoon was great. My day camp groups were just so cute. Their little voices. And then bring so brave even when they were scared of the sewing machine. Just sweet sweet babies.
Tipis was going to come at 330 so they could decorate the council ring. But then the office vetoed decorating it for some reason? So they would come to art early and it was honestly such a nice time. They were super nice and fun to talk to ans I really just enjoyed having to ing them. Even after I had gotten so upset last night but that was a me thing. I was struggling. And the conversations we had today was just really nice and everyone was doing art and it was a really good time. We talked about the news and the world and the issues at camp this year. How done so many people are. How we can improve next year. This year just feels weird for everyone.
They would clean up and leave at 415. I would stay a few minutes later to chat with some councilors. They tried to convince me to let them ride on the top of my car. I said no. Silly.
And then I went home.
I would get home at 5. And was so hungry. But I would push through because I knew me and James were going to Michael's for pizza tonight!
I got home and was so happy to be there. Was sad to see our neighbors are moving. They are going to be renting it out. I hope we get nice neighbors.
And I was so happy to see my animals. And after stripping down and throwing all my laundry in the basket I went to take a shower. And as I turned the shower on I heard James come in downstairs! I was so excited to see them once I was clean.
James had packages for me and I was excited to open things. My new pink wrist brace came and it's great! I would try packing with that later.
We decided to drive to Michael's and would have just an excellent dinner. The waitress seemed a little frazzled. Not the normal girl we like. But we did say hi to her. And James was struggling being distracted but we would have a nice conversation and the pizza was so good. And I was just really happy.
I would have another craving for a little crusty bread with burrata and balsamic and tomato. And it was so nice.
I would keep working on packing. I'm not positive about my choices yet but mainly because I am thinking about cutting some out. But I have time for that before I have to leave on Monday.
James went to play a game with friends so I spent the evening hanging out and enjoying my house and it was just a really nice night compared to how upset I was last night. If eel a lot happier.
But also very tired. I just finished taking a bath and washing my hair and I am ready to lay down. I hope I can fall asleep as easy as I did last night
And that I am eup in a good mood tomorrow. And I hope you do too. Sleep well everyone, until next time!!

Happy invention of the Caeser salad day and also the 4th of July. Today was a pretty good but very sweaty day. The humidity would be pretty oppressive. But I am sitting on the water downtown waiting to the fireworks now. I feel happy. I am really glad I decided to come back home to be here. It's been so fun people watching.
Camp was good too! It was just really humid. I tried my best to not focus on it but I felt gross being so damp. Which also made the bugs bother me so bad. But I tried to remain positive.
Last night after my post Callie would come back to the cabin and we would have some laughs and some conversation. Her new boy called and I tried to not be a part of the convo but I did at times and it was real silly. Also a mouse was running around the rafters and we were screaming and it was so silly.
I fell asleep pretty easy. I would get woke up a few times because I was uncomfortable and was tossing and turning. Waking up wasn't horrible when my alarm went off but I wasn't thrilled. I would take forever to get washed up and dressed. I was trying to do to many things and would keep getting off track but it was fine. And pretty soon I was walking to the art building.
It was shocking how humid it was. Walking up there I was huffing and puffing and struggling to breath the heavy air. It was not comfortable. I thought I was going to pass out. I just wanted to sit down so bad.
But I pushed through and would put my laundry bag and changes of clothes I had carried up from the cabin, in the car. And would get my yogurt and sit in the back having my little breakfast and drinking water.
Aaron would come over to get paper. We chatted about the fixing of the chicken enclosure. He had a plan. I encouraged him to get the kids involved. I hope he figured out a way to do that.
Two other people had mornings with no groups. Jamie would go help Aaron and Avery would come and hang at art and embroider. It was a nice morning.
My morning groups were great. Silver City was mainly really good but one girl was so anxious it was crazy. She kept saying that she couldn't do it, it being putting beads on string. It took me forever but I was able to get her to work with me and she finished her lizard. Everyone did.
I really enjoyed my girl groups. The second group needed way less help but they were good girls. They wanted to keep working though when their hour was up. So I told Mariana (it was her group) she could be in charge of the building and I would go to lunch.
Lunch was fine. I jokingly bullied the SSCs to give me extra tator tots. But they were all silly. I also had babies David this morning and let him sleep in my hammock for almost two hours. He isn't feeling well. I also would fix one of the other boys necklaces. I was happy to help.
After hanging out with specialty staff for a bit I would go and work on some bead lizards I was giving as gifts to some in of the new boy staff that has been so nice to me. They were playing bullying each other about how got lizards so I made them for all of them. They were impressed at how fast I did it.
While I was working on them though my day camp group came 25 minutes early! And I was just like. Take them somewhere else. He was real confused. I don't think he has a watch. They would go play Gaga. I finished my lizards and got a cup of ice from the lodge.
They would come back soon after I got back up there. And I was shocked to find that the group only had 4 kids!
They were great kids. We would be really shocked and worked on our lizards and I was able to sew because it was so chill. It was a really nice hour.
Once they left my little day camp 3s came. Sarah was with them and making lizards with them was a bit chaotic but Sarah and the YLP with her did a great job helping to make snakes ans lizards and not everyone made one but everyone left with something and it was little crazy at times but they cleaned up and soon were off.
My last group of the day was the younger stockade boys. It shocking how much shorter they are. But they were also good boys. They would sue all of my coins for pendants though. Oops. I will have to have them order me more. But we did that and some made bracelets. And I made Randle and Jeci learn to make bead lizards and it was fun to sit and talk with them. Merrill would join us to send it was a good time. Even if it was crazy got. Jeci would tell us how they would keep pet spiders when he grew up in the Philippines and they would fight them?? Wild.
They helped me clean up and put things away. And after I made myself a drink for the road with the last of my ice, I headed home.
There was no traffic. And I got home in a half hour. It was pretty great. My phone still isn't connecting my the car but I ordered a phone mount so that should be here soon.
When I got home I was shocked at how hot it was. Shockingly hot.
I brought my stuff inside and was very happy to see Sweetp. Crabcake was motoring around his enclosure. I would pretty quickly go outside to water all the plants and added water to the tortoise bowl. And would bring him outside for some warmth and sun. Sweetp would come out to buy it was crazy hot in the sun so I wss like. Dude stay in the shade. And he did but I did not want to be out there at all.
I would go and take a cool shower. I washed my hair and scrubbed away all the grossness I felt. And when I was done I would go hang out on the floor of the bedroom for almost an hour. Just staying cool. But eventually I would get dressed again. And got James's shorts they asked me to bring them. And headed out.
I drove to Wawa to get a sandwich. I asked James if they would like me to bring them dinner but the musuem bought them all pizza so they were good. I went and got my sandwich and was very excited about it.
I drove to the museum next. My plan was to find a parking space in the neighborhood and walk to the museum. And I was nervous but I would find a spot across from McDonald's on the street. It wasn't even a long walk.
I was really excited that my camp chair was in the back of the car when I thought I had forgotten it at home. I would grab that and a tote bag to carry my food and James's shorts and all my teddy bears to sew. And walked to the museum.
I was excited to see people. And also was excited to see all my friends. And to see how many cars we're waiting to go in.
I would go to the pedestrian entrance and joked that I had no weapons or drugs. And saw James walking across the parking lot. They were incredibly busy but I would get them for a moment. The museum is open until 9 so they had a busy busy evening.
I would help make a sign inside. But orettnsoo I moved outside to set up a spot.
I set up right in front of the dog statue. Stanley said I did a great job picking and I should have an excellent view.
The rain was coming in though. He offered to get me an umbrella and I'm so glad I took him up on that.
I ate half my sandwich while I waited for him to come back. And when he did he had two umbrellas. I would give the family next to me one of them and I'm so glad be came whe he did because the sky opened up. And everyone ran into the pavilion. But not me. I had the umbrella between my legs and was perfectly dry. I would just work on my sewing and enjoy watching the water.
It wouldn't rain for long. 20 minutes. And eventually people started coming back to their chairs. There is a lot of people here! Stanley says that the inside of the museum is also crazy packed. I hope that is making James happy.
It's almost 9 now. And James will come out soon ish and fireworks will start soon after that. And I am very excited to be down here. It's literally been years since I've seen 4th of July fireworks with my husband and I am very excited. I can already see some small ones in the distance.
I will post this after the fireworks. Tomorrow is the last day of the first session of camp! I hope it's not so hot. I love you all. Good night!!
