God, I love this entire sequence.

The start where Utena just softly calls Anthy’s name, there being a small crack of light shining down on her, the crack that Utena made to get through and reach Himemiya.

And how frantic she sounds upon opening the door, calling out to Himemiya, as she finally sees her, and how happy she sounds at that.

Repeatedly calling for her hand, making it clear she is not leaving until Anthy makes the choice to save herself, to reach for Utena’s hand.

Their hands touching, mirroring all their scenes when they were in bed grabbing each others hands as they talked about their lives.

And the fact that Utena couldn’t save Anthy, she couldn’t be her prince that could just sweep her up and save her, because the prince she was trying to be was impossible to live up to.

And the swords coming for her as a result, but it doesn’t matter, Anthy is saved now. Utena did what no one else ever managed to, she ended the cycle and freed Anthy.

it might be dumb but Utena the series and film were both at least a little life changing when I first watched them just a few years ago. I went with the dub (dubs for life) so in my own puny way I can thank Rachael for having an ultra positive effect on me, even as I was going into my 40s at the time. The fact that I just completed a third rewatch of the series the day before she passed, fuck.

English Dub voice actress Rachael Lillis has passed away on August 10, 2024 at the age of 46 due to breast cancer.

Lillis is best known as the original English Dub voice actress of Misty, Jessie, and various pokémon such as Jigglypuff and Goldeen in the Pokémon anime. Her other well-known English dub roles include Utena Tenjō in Revolutionary Girl Utena, Martina in Slayers Next, Micott Bartsch in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Nagi Kirima in Boogiepop Phantom, Yuriko Star in The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Kanaka Ohno in Genshiken, and Ami Kurimoto in DNA².
