BEING BEST FRIENDS WITH KATARA:
prompt: you two are from the same tribe while traveling with her brother and Aang.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.pure love in the friendship as she always makes sure you are okay everyday. Like literally every morning starts off with her checking if you had a nightmare or such.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.traveling with the avatar has its perks by being followed by a prince with daddy issues. And through the whole time, she is protective of you. It didn’t matter if you are a non bender or a master at what you are bending. You are still someone who needs to be watched in her eyes.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.katara is such a mother and a best friend. But mostly a mother as she gives you advice and guidance in what she knows about what you want to know mostly.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.oh you’re hurt? She’s already healing you. Oh you’re hungry? She’s already making Sokka go fishing. Literally babies you. Don’t matter if you are older or younger, you are a victim of mama katara. She’s glad you find her comforting to be around when you need the comfort. She literally smiles feeling your body ease against hers.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.you & Katara definitely use to prank Sokka into thinking he peed in his dream😭just to mess with this boy. Katara just water bending water onto sokka’s sleeping bag as you snicker along with your friend.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.what if you were a water bender like katara? Oh boyyy she will make sure you know the basics. And if you are a pro like katara already, you two are a deadly water duo in battle. Azula and the fire nation better pray that one of you has the mercy to spare. Because you guys will go psycho mode with the water bending skills.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.if you’re a non bender, oh boy. Mama Katara mode goes from 5 to almost 100. Cause you both have been best friends since almost birth. You guys are inseparable. Literally she’s making sure you have no scars every time the battle ends with enemies in the way of Aang’s adventure.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.lol when she was going to square up to toph when everyone was tired, you had to just stand there and pull her aside for her to calm down.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.lmao the times where you had to drag katara away from basically fighting toph is mostly crazy. When you guys met her, and at the fire nation. When toph threw that rock and it hit katara. You knew shit would be real when katara got her payback. You had to literally chi block both of the girls to make them stop. Yeah toph would be hard to chi block, but you did while jumping.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.yk how she got her mother’s necklace. What if she makes you a water tribe friendship necklace or bracelet of sorts. Literally just to prove how your friendship with her is strong and can never be breaking.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.yes you two will have girl time together. She loves having you as a best friend who she can share secrets with and just laugh with. It feels nice.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.if you were younger than her, man..she is actually a mother to you. Always making sure you hold her hand, making sure you are fed, making sure your clothes are alright. You might want to tell her you can take care of your own self. But she would just ignore it and keep babying you like a true mother.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.katara always shows off her water bending to impress you, and it works as you clap with light up eyes. Katara just feels proud to have you around. It’s nice.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.katara is a very talented and sweet girl, so if you were to say a water bender. She’s helping you withy your skills. She knows it was hard to do when she first started. But now you two can do spars.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.a water/ice slide will be a must for you. You literally half begged katara and she gave in to giving you a water/ice slide. She just liked how happy you looked. The way your eyes light up with your smile. It brought joy to her as well. She even joined you on the slide as she makes it even more exciting with her skills.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.when Zuko was trying to get in the gaang, you were ready to trust him because you felt no ill intent from the prince. But as you were going to go to Zuko to welcome him, katara pulls you back and glares at Zuko. Zuko notices that and gave you a soft look of appreciation.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.if you’re sick. The gods or avatars better hope you don’t get sick cause katara is being snappy and worried for you. Aang tried to touch your forehead about what was wrong with you, and katara smacks his hand so quick away from you. She’s probably asking him if he washed his hands😭
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.in the end, you guys are the greatest friends anyone can have. From the same tribe to the whole thing about traveling with the avatar. You care about her, she cares about you.

✨ spacedilves chapter 6 sneak peek ✨
exclusive sneak peek below of the next chapter of @ash-and-starlight and my bebè, the mercy of magpies 🤭
“Where is he?! What’s wrong with him?”
“I don’t know,” said Doctor Song. She appeared amid the smoke, a dark shape with an arm flung over her head. “He won’t let me close.”
Then the white curled away from Druk and Sokka saw the prone body clutched in his great claws. A horrible jolt went through his spine.
“What does he need?” he said, voice steadier than he felt.
“I need to get up close to check his meridians,” said Song. She took a small jar from her bag. “This should stabilise him for the time being.”
Sokka pursed his lips. He looked up at the great draconic face looming above him, hissing protectively over Zuko. “Easy, Druk, easy,” he murmured. He held out a hand for Druk to sniff, resisted the urge to flinch when the great dragon snorted burning steam over his hand.
There was a gasp behind him, quickly shushed. He ignored it. “Druk, it’s me. You know me. You know all of us. You’ll let me see him, right? He needs our help.”
The dragon bared his teeth.

this one's for all the kataang shippers that got a little sad every time they saw absolute husband aang slander in a zutara fanfic.
OR: the common zutara trope of "zuko helps katara escape an unhealthy relationship with aang" is flipped entirely and completely on its head.
...
The liveliness of this mountaintop temple was nothing like the cold quiet that she had felt in Zuko’s castle these last few years. After she and her friends had saved the world, ending the Fire Lord’s reign, Katara had found herself at a crossroads. Although it made the most sense, she couldn’t bring herself to return back home, to the Southern Water Tribe. The memories were… too much.
Sokka had extended an offer for her to join him at the Northern Water Tribe, where he planned to find a teacher to aid him in mastering the traditional non-bending fighting styles of their people, but Katara just couldn’t bring herself to go back there, either. Toph and Aang were both headed to reconstruct important cultural monuments destroyed during the war, including the Air temples. She had considered coming with them, she really had, but ultimately… she made a different choice.
...
So she had stayed with Zuko.
Through his breakup with Mai, she had been the one he came to.
Through his first year as the Fire Lord, she was at his side. Attended every meeting, talked through his ideas, dragged him out to social events when he felt so in over his head that he would sit paralyzed in his room. That closeness had turned into something else the first night that he had kissed her.
...
And after what felt like years of quiet complacency and mild agreement, Katara felt her temper awaken, flicker. She calmed herself, reasoned that she didn’t know what he was doing with them. He could be checking for threats on her life, for poison sealed into an envelope. She held fast onto that tiny scrap of belief that he was still the man she had married, trusted, loved and been loved by.
Until that last thread of hope and trust was pulled taunt and then snapped entirely when Katara slipped into his office and found them.
There were entire drawers of letters with her name on them.
...
Her attention drifted to the bottom of the bag. To Aang's scrolls. The ones she still hadn’t let herself read.
...
Katara,
How’s the fire palace? Started any underground dance clubs yet? I guess they’d be pretty tricky to start right under the nose of the new Fire Lord. Is Zuko adjusting well? I’m a bit worried about the burden of dismantling an entire empire falling squarely on his shoulders. Do you think I should head back, stick around for some peacekeeping? Give me any reason to come to be with you help, and I will.
Yours, Aang.
...
(Fire Lady) Katara,
I heard by word of mouth from a few Fire Nation travellers that passed through the Western Air Temple that you and Zuko had gotten married. Congratulations are in order, of course, but… Sokka, Toph, your dad and I never got our invitations. Was it a Fire-Nation-only event, or something? Your dad is pretty broken up about it. Sokka and I tried to console him, but he’s fairly upset, and honestly? I’m worried about you, Katara. This doesn't seem like you. You don’t sound like yourself.
Yours, always, Aang
...
She selected a third scroll, dated only a month before.
Katara,
I can’t deny that I’m concerned about how you’re doing. Especially considering that the Katara I know would never shut down every single opportunity to see her friends. We don’t mean to be overbearing, but we love you. So much. If all the new duties that come with being wife to the Fire Lord are too much, please, please, talk to any of us. Talk to me. I care about you, Katara, I always have, and I miss my best friend.
Forever yours, Aang.
Katara slid the scroll closed before her tears could drop onto it, and she quietly packed the papers away. She reached up, rubbing those tears away furiously the way she did as a child whenever Sokka called her a crybaby. The attempt to hold the tsunami of emotion back was fruitless. She doubled over, shoulders shaking with sobs.
She knew where she would go once the cargo ship reached the land.

Zutara Month 2024 ; "Mom and Dad are Fighting Again."
here's to my first time writing zutara and my first time joining in zutara month! Hope you enjoy this little drabble ♡
Aang said goodbye to Gyatso and his two pets, Momo and Appa as he saw Sokka's car approaching.
"Remember to have fun kiddo." Gyatso said, looking over to the bags make sure Aang had everything he needed for his camping trip.
"Of course, Gyatso! Take good care of Momo and Appa for me!” he said with a smile, bid his final goodbye to them and put all his belongings into the back trunk and opened the second door of the car, seeing Toph already making herself comfortable.
“Hey everyone!” he perked up as he climbed right in, sitting next to Toph. Closing the door, he immediately noticed how tense the air felt. First, Sokka was the only one who answered back, “Hey there buddy.” but most of them only nodded.
Desperate to find out what’s wrong, he looked around, from Sokka who was driving, Katara who was busy checking the GPS, Toph who had her eyes closed.
He looked over his shoulder to see Suki eating snacks, and finally looked to Zuko who only looked out the window. That’s when it hit him, why was Katara sitting in the passenger seat next to Sokka and not Suki?
Still confused, he nudged his arm to Toph’s and whispered, “What’s with everyone?”
To that, Toph only replied, “Mom and Dad are fighting, again.”
-
“Alright, Suki and I will share a tent,” he looked to see Aang grabbing his supplies for his tent, “Toph, you wanna share with Aang?”
She immediately nodded, with a small voice she then said, “As long as I don’t have to share with Sweetness and Sparky over there.”
“Like I’ll share my tent with him anyway.” Katara muttered back, walking away from everyone to start setting up her tent. Zuko, who was silent the whole time, looked to his friends and said, “I’ll go help her.”
Katara was busy taking out the supplies when Zuko bent down in front of her, trying to grab one of the tent poles. “I can do it myself.” he heard her say, wanting to take away the tent pole he was holding.
“I know,” he replied, knowing Katara is now looking at him, “but let me help.”
She rolled her eyes, deciding on letting him off this time, although she was close to smacking him in the head when he continued, “You also kinda suck on building it yourself.”
“Oh, fuck off.” he chuckled at her reply. A comfortable silence fell upon them, Zuko was busy making sure their tent was up and sturdy, while Katara grabbed the rain-fly, in case of any rain happening on their trip.
Aang, along with Sokka, were eyeing the two behind a tree. With their tents up and ready, Suki and Toph decided on snacking together while they wait for lunch time.
“And why were they fighting again?” Aang whispered.
Sokka thought for a second, before replying, “Actually, no idea.” to which Aang facepalmed.

Dead Hearts - Chapter 42
~*~
Zuko jolted awake.
His entire body was sore and head splitting. He looked around panicked before realizing where he was. On the sleep mat inside Katara’s apartment. Sokka was asleep on the mattress nearby. Zuko gripped his head.
Was… Was it all a dream…?
Zuko hesitantly checked his phone. There was one unread message from his father.
Ozai: Will the honorable knight be able to save his beautiful princess?
Zuko felt his soul leave his body.
“W-What… happened?” Sokka sat up, rubbing his head. His face harden as the past events came rushing back. “Where’s… Katara?”
A deadly calm filled Zuko.
“With Koh.”
He reached into his bag pulled out Jet’s gun.
“I’m going bring her back.”

The Missing Sock
Summary: Azula and Sokka take a trip to Norway. Sokka does not like planes.
He first sees Tromso as a twinkling of golden dots amid a sprawling, craggy snow-capped expanse. A sea of black rocks with frosty-sugary caps. The rest is hard to make out between the semi-darkness of near nightfall and a good wintery haze of snowflakes. He watches them rush over the plane’s blinking wing. He leans back in his seat and holds his breath.
Azula reaches for his hand. “You doing okay?”
“I hate this part.” He admits. “My ears do this popping thing…”
“Everyone’s ears do that.” She fishes around her carry on bag and offers him a stick of cinnamon gum. He hates cinnamon but the popping it twice as unpleasant so he hastily unwraps it and pops the gum into his mouth.
“I hate flying. I really hate flying.” He winces. “I hate landing the most because sometimes it does this bumpy thing, especially when the weather is like this. But landing is the only way to stop flying…are you seeing the issue?”
Azula chuckles. “Yes, I think that I understand the problem.”
He squeezes her hand as the pilot welcomes them to Tromso and announces their descent with a reminder to remain seated with their seatbelts fastened. As though Sokka had even unfasted his to begin with.
“It’ll be over before you know it.” Azula promises. But he knows that she knows as well as he does that he is going to be petrified and sinking deeper and deeper into that plane seat until its wheels touch the icy ground.
Oh geez! What if the runway is icy? What if they forgot to salt it and it is too slick for a good landing? Do they even salt runways? He yelps as the plane hits its first patch of turbulence. To her credit Azula doesn’t sigh or roll her eyes. He decides that she is a true gift from the universe when she allows him to practically crush her hand.
.oOo.
“Well that wasn’t so bad.” He declares.
“Right.” Danger behind them, she resumes her eye rolling. “Please don’t tell me that you get carsick too because we still have about a two hour bus trip to Lyngenfjord.”
“Buses, trains, cars, those are fine. I can deal with those.” He promises. And he keeps to his word. In fact he seems to rather enjoy watching the frosty landscape roll by. And she is rather fond of watching the snowfall in the headlights.
She yawns and leans herself on Sokka’s shoulder. The chatter around her combined with tinkling folk tunes playing over the speakers and the rocking of the bus is making her sleepy. She nuzzles her head in the crook of his neck and lets him stroke her hair.
When she opens her eyes again it is to a wall of mountains that fill the skyline.
The bus comes to a stop. While she waits for the aisle to clear she yawns again and gives her arms a good stretch.
And when her feet meet the snow she gives her legs a few pumps. “I really do hate sitting all day.” She remarks. Especially since it is now an hour into nighttime. The wind gives her cheeks a few good kisses and she has burrows herself deeply into her coat.
Sokka steps off of the bus and takes a candy cane out of his pocket and his eyes light up. “I forgot that this was in there!” He looks at it and shrugs.
“Please tell me that you got that last week or something and not last year.” Azula grumbles.
Sokka hums, “it very well could have been from last year.”
“You sicken me.”
He slings an arm over her shoulder. “And you’re going to spend a whole week with me in a small glass igloo.” He fixes her with a lopsided girn. “Just you, me, and the night sky. And also a bunch of people we just road the bus with but they won’t be in our igloo…”
“I sure hope not.” Azula stuffs her hands into her pockets.
Sokka checks his watch. “It looks like we’re just on time for dinner. I’ve been meaning to try that delicious, delicious reindeer meat.”
“What would Aang say about that? I’m going to tell him that you…”
“Don’t do that! He’s a sensitive guy. What happens in Norway stays in Norway.”
“Is that how we’re approaching this trip? It’s going to be one big secret?”
“I think that it would be funny if every time Zuko asked how it went we both just said something like, ‘oh…you know…’ and then just not elaborate. Make it sound more exciting than it really was. And if he really pushes for details we can talk about how I was abducted by a troll and taken to the mountain said and you had to steal a longship and come rescue me.”
“Let’s just get dinner.” She sighs.
“You’re right, sled-dogs would be more believable than a longship.”
“That’s the part of the story that would be unbelievable?” She shakes her head and stuffs her hands back into her pockets. She follows Sokka down the snowy path, listening to the sifting of snow beneath their feet. Watching her breaths puff towards a starry night sky.
Sokka slips his arm through hers.
.oOo.
He thinks that Azula is absolutely precious when she is asleep. Her face is so serene, so relaxed. She isn’t exactly asleep yet, she is still stirring, trying to keep herself awake. He keeps telling her that they have all week to see the northern lights and that he will wake her up if he spots them.
She begins to untangle herself from abundant layers of the most fluffy blankets that he has ever seen. Now and then she treats him to her softer side. The softer side that enjoys wearing oversized sweaters-–usually his. The softer side that allows for moments where her feet hang over the side of the bed; during her sleep, one of her socks had come off. She stares at her feet with a soft pout, resigning herself to rummaging through the blankets to find the missing one.
He doesn’t wait for her to find it before scoping she and the remaining blanket that she has left wrapped around her shoulders into his arms. She gives him a small protesting shout. “I haven’t found my other sock yet.”
“Why do you need a sock when you have a Sokka?”
She groans. “I swear, I will throw you out of this igloo and let you freeze to death.”
He snickers. “Then who’s going to make you some hot chocolate to go with your view of the northern lights.” He sets her down on the sofa and gestures to the glass ceiling. He turns his back on her. “Trick question!” He answers before she can and turns around to reveal two steaming mugs. “I already made them.”
It is so stupid. Even he knows that. And while it is indeed stupid, it is stupidly touching. He can see that smile on her face. The one that she makes when she is trying not to laugh. She takes the cup in her hands.
He loves that particular smile very much. She doesn’t wear it often, usually saving it for when they are alone together.
“You want to go outside and have a closer look?”
“I’m going to need my sock for that.”
He points to the floor at the foot of the bed.
.oOo.
This isn’t the first time that she has seen the northern lights with him. But they look different—each location providing its own special atmosphere and magic. Rovaniemi had been more enchanting and childlike, like a fairy tale. The lights over the Blue Lagoon in Iceland had a very contrasting maturity to them. In part it felt like they were a part of the Lagoon’s package deal. They were nice to see with glasses of wine and a hydrating facial mask. Lyngenfjord is a nice in between;  majestic and powerful. Caught between a visual lullabye and a type of luminous meditation. They wrap themselves around the mountain tops adding sprays of green and teal to the sharp white of snow.
Lyngenfjord has a rolling sheet of water and she can see the glowing ribbon reflected in it. It is like seeing two displays at once.
She supposes that she should consider herself lucky that the lights only show themselves briefly, she could get frostbite while transfixed under their spell. Gloves and a steaming cup of hot chocolate won’t spare her nose from the harshness of the cold.
“You just don’t get tired of them, do you?”
She shakes her head. She would like to see them everywhere. To pick and choose which displays were her favorites. She sits herself in Sokka’s lap and hands him her phone. So far they have three pictures for their scrapbook—a hobby that has been treating her well. She can refer back to it when she needs a reminder that things aren’t so bad. That most of the time she is a happy person. She slips her phone back into her pocket and tilts her face up for one last glimpse at the lights as they fade back into the stars.
Sokka takes the opportunity to press a kiss to her lips. “Want me to tuck you back in?”
She nods. “Yes please.”
Her dreams are pleasant that night.

hiii, i was wondering if i could request a matchup for atla.
since i'm bi i don't have any gender preference. i'm 5'6, with brown skin and 4c black hair that i usually keep in box braids. i'm like halfway between chubby and skinny. i have brown eyes and plump lips with a rather flat nose. my love languages are acts of service and physical touch. i like playing tennis, doing makeup and reading, especially fantasy books. i also enjoy drawing even though i suck at it. my ideal first date would be a romantic picnic on the beach. when i look for a partner i focus mstly if our humour and values match up. i don't really care about the rest. i speak 5 languages fluently and i'm the oldest sister (i have two little sisters) i loathe bugs especially flies.
i would really appreciate getting a matchuo but no pressure to you or anything
💞
your matchup is . . . zuko!!
fire lord zuko who thinks that you deserve the world and more! (because you do)
dates with zuko down to the town’s marketplace! your favorite part is visiting the local artisans, you and zuko love supporting their businesses. he knows you so entirely well because when you even glance slightly at some sort of pottery or jewelry with a certain look in your eye, zuko knows that he has to get it for you.
most of the times, you always fight your boyfriend about him buying you things, but it always ends the same: him successfully pulling out the money and you walking away with a new bag in hand.
zuko would spend the entirety of the fire nation’s national funds if it meant making you happy!!
due to both of your busy schedules, you two often try to help each other out in terms of chores and other smaller acts of service.
despite having maids and servants around the palace, zuko never lets any of them into his personal office. he has a very particular way of organizing his documents and papers, and he finds it too tedious to explain every single aspect of his methods to them. but over time, after spending many long sleepless nights with him in his office, you’ve come to recognize and memorize his organizational habits.
so after weeks of zuko working tirelessly in his office, probably more earth kingdom affairs, he’s burnt out and most definitely too worn out to even think about the mess that remains in his work space. with a little free time in your schedule, you decide to take on the job of organizing his office, carefully sorting everything away into its rightful spaces.
the look in his eyes when you take him to his office for “a surprise” makes everything worth it.
zuko would appreciate somebody who’s well versed in other languages! when it comes to diplomatic affairs with other nations, he values your input due to your knowledge in international customs and traditions.
he also relates to you on a deeper level when it comes to siblings! while the sibling dynamics may be vastly different, zuko can relate to being the eldest sibling and the struggles that come with it.
it’s imperative to zuko that he maintains a strong relationship with your family. he always goes the extra mile to impress them! whether it be importing some sort of flower that's native specifically to the water tribe or commissioning clothes to be made for them from his own personal seamstress, he just wants to make sure they’re happy.
despite being the literal fire lord, zuko was so so so incredibly nervous meeting your family. he couldn’t stop checking his hair in the mirror or making sure that the gifts he brought for them didn’t somehow magically disappear out of the gift bag. but honestly, zuko had no reason to worry because your parents love him as if he were one of their own, and he couldn’t be more grateful.
your second contender was . . . sokka!!
. . .
author's note: i kinda wrote this with post-atla show zuko in mind, so when he finally becomes the fire lord at the end of the show! hope you enjoy nonnie! <3

When I was watching some cat videos on Instagram, I thought "Well, Zuko is kind of cat-like..." and suddenly I thought of a collar with a bell, but I thought it would be a bad idea, so I gave him a good-luck charm-style key chain with a bell and put it on Zuko's bag.
When we go out together, we make a tinkling noise as we walk through supermarkets and drugstores, and even when we go our separate ways, I sometimes hear the sound of bells in the distance, and the sound gets louder as we get closer, so Sokka thinks, "This is great."
One day while we were out together, I noticed that the bell didn't ring, so I checked Zuko's bag and found the amulet on it, but the bell was missing, and I asked, "Did you drop the bell?"
"Oh, sorry... Azula asked me if I had a keychain to prevent me from getting lost, so I was embarrassed and only took the bell... but I didn't throw it away, I've kept it safe," He said.
"I see, sorry," Sokka said, but in him mind he thought, "Damn Azula! You've done something unnecessary!"

i am creation both haunted and holy (Zukka)
There is a guilt that drips through Zuko's skin, permeating him down to his bones. He has felt the weight of it, of his shame, of his dishonor, of his failure, for as long as he can remember. It might have been tempered by his mother's presence, but never cleansed.
Rescuing Appa evaporated a few drops. Turning his back on his father a few more. Volunteering to become Aang's firebending teacher even more so.
But outright purging it?
In the moments when Sokka makes him laugh, in the moments where Sokka returns from the market with some new bag and has Zuko fondly rolling his eyes, the shame dissolves. The guilt completely evaporates. Zuko is left with nothing but fondness and affection warming his chest, blooming hot behind his ribs.
When they part and Zuko must return to his duties as the Fire Lord, the guilt returns, cutting its aching path across his stomach. It is important to hold onto, he knows. The guilt keeps him in check, keeps him thinking about what he can do to make things right.
But it doesn't have to be all-consuming to do so. The guilt made Zuko physically ill on a number of occasions, even knocking him out completely with fever and stress. If only for how he might help others, he cannot live in such a state.
The more time Zuko spends with the Water Tribe Ambassador, the positive feelings only grow. When they spar, when they share a meal, when they argue over trade agreements- Zuko feels not just happiness, but satisfaction. Turns out that pride can be just as strong a tool as joy to push out the nauseating feeling of guilt.
Balance is key to life, Zuko knows. The guilt keeps him on the right path, but the joy gives him something to live for. Something not just to die for.
When Sokka enters Zuko's rooms next, Zuko lays a hand on Sokka's. It is a purposeful gesture, a chasing of something more, but to his surprise he realizes that the motion is completely natural to him, more familiar than he'd realized. Sokka has reached out to grab Zuko's hand plenty of times when he has gotten too excited about one topic or another.
Zuko's breath catches in his throat, both at the cool of Sokka's skin and the sheer normalcy of Sokka's warm presence in his life.
Sokka's words cut to a stop and he arches an eyebrow. "You alright, man?"
Zuko nods, tapping his fingers along Sokka's knuckles. "Never better than when I'm with you," he says, and to his pleasant surprise, he finds he means it.
"Oh," pops out of Sokka's mouth, full of surprised delight, and Zuko knows Sokka well enough by now to hear the insecurity in his voice. Most of it was long ago put to rest along his treks with Aang, but some portion of that insecurity about his non-bender status still lingers, carved into him by a lifetime of being undervalued.
To Zuko, though? Sokka's non-bender status only elevates his qualities in Zuko's eyes. Sokka's tactical know-how, his ability to adapt, his intelligence, his love for fashion, his interest in new things, his leadership abilities, his stubbornness, his sheer force of will- most of these things were developed out of a need to prove himself better than any bender, a task he accomplished masterfully.
And the rest? That is all just what makes Sokka lovely and wonderful and him.
It comes to Zuko then and there: the balance that Sokka strikes in him is similar to the balance that he strikes in Sokka. Zuko is a balance of guilt and satisfaction, shame and happiness; Sokka is a mix of insecurity and pride, uncertainty and stubbornness.
So Zuko leans forward presses his lips to Sokka's. Sokka's lips, cool and chapped, press right back, his fingers twisting to curl around Zuko's, sure and certain as can be.
Zuko still feels guilt. He still feels shame. But he also feels happiness. Excitement. Love.
Peace.
For a few moments, he can feel nothing but joy.

Katara and Suki
In Avatar, Katara is widely regarded by fans as a feminist icon and prominent role model for female viewers. The creators even admit in the official art book that they think she is the reason half of the show’s viewers are girls (which is ludicrous on its own, because last I checked I as a woman am not excluded from enjoying stories with male characters). But for me, Katara has never been that kind of inspiration. In many ways, I think, this preachiness in her writing may sometimes undermine her very message.
Admittedly, Katara is a mixed bag of a character. Like everyone in Avatar, she has a spectacular growth arc and a realistic balance of flaws and strengths. There are things about her that annoy me, and things I really truly admire about her. Why I’m writing this is because the things I think make up her best features always seem to be the things everyone else dismisses or fails to acknowledge—both in the show and real life—with the exception of Sokka and maybe Toph.
I’ll start with the reasons I don’t think Katara qualifies as the pinnacle of feminism, the reasons in favor, and finally the character I think truly embodies positive feminism.
First, let’s define—feminism is a word that comes with as much baggage as any. It can simply mean the activist movement began last century that demands women match men in every field and facet of life. In that sense, perhaps, Katara is undeniably feminist. But in the sense that feminism is about placing the same value on women for their femininity as on men for their masculinity, then a different case has to be made. This is because Katara’s feminism is fundamentally defined by her trying to be a man. So many episodes and subplots center around proving that she’s as strong as a man, that she can be loud and assertive. Everything about this kind of strength is extremely surface level, and when poorly done can easily make a character unlikable because it requires the putting down of others in order to lift said character up. Nevertheless, it’s one of the core traits the writers insist on Katara exhibiting.
This is clearest in “The Waterbending Master” episode, which I have a lot of problems with writing-wise largely because it confuses its story with its activist message. In it, Katara successfully defies the old fashioned, patriarchal customs of the northern tribe (which seem to exist for no worldbuilding reason other than to irk her specifically) and wins the victory of ranking alongside the male characters as a combat trainee. She wins essentially not by helping them revalue their women, but simply by slipping into the rank of “man.”
Other examples include “The Painted Lady,” in which her arrogant activism is elevated to Savior Complex (While fighting with Sokka, she yells ”I will never turn my back on people who need me!”) and lauded despite its consequences. And again, “The Southern Raiders” is perhaps her at her lowest, where her self-righteousness takes her to near villain levels. I say “near” because I do admire her self-control in the end, but for most of the episode her anger and determination to plow others over in order to not be regarded as weak is hugely ignoble. And this isn’t a huge part, but in “The Blind Bandit” episode, she cows the earthbending bullies who initially refused to tell Aang about Earth Rumble VI with force and aggression. This last example isn’t a bad thing per se—it’s honestly entertaining. But again, it defines Katara’s strength as purely physical and keeps her character dependent on other people needing to be put in their place.
Katara’s true virtues are much more understated, but they are there. And they are more traditionally regarded as feminine virtues—her resilience, her quiet patience, and her willingness to nurture those around her. One of the best episodes that exemplifies this is when the Gaang is stranded in the desert after losing Appa, and they only survive because she takes them each by the hand and firmly but gently keeps them focused on getting out alive. She exhibits understanding for each of their struggles, not anger and authority. Another episode, one that never fails to bring me close to tears, is the one where she and Toph clash after some risks heists Toph pulls to get money, and Sokka explains to Toph (with Katara overhearing) how much he appreciates and is grateful because of how she stepped up and took the place of her mother, just by doing simple and unglorified things like doing chores and taking care of her family. It’s such a shame to see this quiet, unassertive but rock-solid strength go dismissed in favor of the loud and brash.
On the contrary, the man-like Katara runs the risk of undermining true equality and value for women by making her embody the stereotype of empty feminism—a loud, angry, self-righteous child who thinks she can fight her way to respect. But again, fighting requires opponents, and someone determined to think this way is bound to make opponents where there are none. So who truly embodies feminism in Avatar?
Suki. In the episode where she’s introduced, she tells Sokka, “I am a warrior, but I’m a girl too.” For Suki, there is no conflict whatsoever between the two. Although at first glance it may seem like there’s no difference between this and the Katara who trained in combat under Mater Pakku, Suki’s role as a combatant is necessarily feminine. It’s clear in the way the whole style of the Kyoshi warriors is shaped by the fact that they’re not men—their weapons, armor, and strategy of avoiding a head-on clash of strength all highlight this. Suki as a person is also much more balanced in her demeanor. She tends to observe before taking action. Her confidence and assurance come from the way she doesn’t feel the need to prove herself to everyone. And she demonstrates a preference to let a person’s own actions work against them rather than to quash her opponents.
For as long as Katara is trying to prove that she’s not weak by being as “man like” as possible, she will never truly be a proper role model for young girls and feminists. Suki, on the other hand, has fully balanced both worlds and shows how girls can be strong without sacrificing the fact that they’re girls.

A Change in Perspective 19
(welp. 3 weeks late, but it finally exists. The next chapter in one of my stories. This one has been on hiatus for a good while now, so I'm glad to finally have another chapter finished for it)
Zuko had known that things wouldn’t just be smooth sailing once they started traveling together. Really he had. But he could honestly say that he hadn’t expected things to fall apart this badly quite so quickly. They’d only been traveling together for a couple of hours before they had to find a safe place to settle down for the night. And that was things started falling apart.
It started simple enough. Toph, Aang, and Sokka had started off playing in the shedded fur Appa had dropped all of their camping spot, much to Zuko and Katara’s mutual disgust, though Zuko could admit to finding some humor in their antics as well. Then they had started setting up camp. Zuko, used to pulling his own weight both on the ship and in the shop, immediately checked with Katara to see what he could help with. He had a number of things he was good at after all, but he didn’t want to take over something someone else typically preferred to do either.
Unsurprisingly, he was put in charge of setting up the campfire. And he had no trouble with that, or with assisting Katara in the cooking once she had the water in the pot either. The problem came when it became obvious that Toph wasn’t doing anything similar. The younger bender had taken up a spot next to a nearby rock, and was laying back, relaxing. While the rest of them worked at setting up camp. Katara, clearly used to being the one directing their little group, had gone over to try and explain things to Toph ans, well. Things had escalated from there. It ended up with Toph snapping at Katara, causing the waterbender to turn and storm off.
When Katara had come back with the water, she had attempted to apologize to Toph, but it hadn’t gone over the best. There weren’t any further angry words, but Toph had been fairly dismissive before shutting down to go to sleep. Zuko was already worried then, that sort of disagreement could spell disaster, but it didn’t take long for him to figure out that the night’s troubles were far from over.
Settling down to sleep on the hard ground after so long of enjoying a real bed was an uncomfortable adjustment, but Zuko had finally been starting to drop off to sleep when Toph’s voice suddenly cut through the night’s peaceful atmosphere, waking everyone from the beginnings of their rest.
“Something’s coming this way!” Zuko was sitting up before he fully processed her words, turning to look where her head was pointing. “It’s almost like an avalanche, but not quite.”
“That’s very descriptive, Toph, thank you,” Sokka snarked, but Zuko was already climbing out of his sleeping bag.
“How far away is it?” he asked, trusting Toph to be able to judge that. “And how long do you think it will take for it to get to us?”
“Not too far,” Toph replied, brow creased in what looked like concern, but also could have been concentration. “And with how fast it’s moving I’d say it will be here within the hour. It’s big, but it’s moving fast.”
“Then I suppose we had better move fast ourselves,” Katara decides, getting up and starting to pack up their belongings once more. With far less enthusiasm, but far more urgency, than they had unpacked them. Zuko couldn’t help but notice that, once again, Toph made no effort to help. Instead spending her time staring off in the direction of the approaching…whatever it was.

Wings Around the Globe Rally
Leg 7
(In the morning, the racers head to the runway.)
AANG (V.O.): We are live from Antarctica, and here they come!
Tumblr media
AANG: This is it, race fans. The final leg, back to New York.
(Marinette passes her parents, her plane turbocharged.)
TOM: We’ll see you in New York.
MARINETTE: Thanks, guys.
SABINE: Come on, Tom. We have a plane to catch.
(Nearby, Marinette turns a corner.)
PRESS REPORTER 1: Marinette.
PRESS REPORTER 2: She’s back.
(She heads towards Gabriel.)
GABRIEL: You have to be kidding me.
(He moves to Marinette.)
GABRIEL: Bolting on a few new parts doesn’t change who you are. (SNIFFS) I can still smell the bakery on you.
MARINETTE: You know what? I finally get it. You’re afraid of getting beat by a baker girl!
(She gets in his face, making him edge back.)
MARINETTE: Well, check six, because I’m coming.
(Marinette turns away, anger blazing in her eyes. Gabriel turns to Nathalie and Cash.)
GABRIEL: We are going to end this, once and for all.
CASH: Yeah.
NATHALIE: This is going to be fun.
(From behind a wall, Su-Han watches them leave.)
LEG 7: ANTARCTICA > NEW YORK
15,087 km
SOKKA (V.O.): This one’s all about speed and the willingness to give it all. The racer who cuts the ribbon in New York takes home the trophy and the glory.
Starting line: Williams Field at McMurdo Station in Antarctica
(The final leg starts with each racer taking off one-by-one, a countdown being the starting signal alongside an official dropping the flag. Gabriel takes off, then Nathalie and Cash follow.)
SUKI (V.O.): And we’re off! The first flyers take to the air!
Tumblr media
Starting positions:
Gabriel Agreste
Nathalie Sancoeur
Cash
Alya Césaire
Nino Lahiffe
Chloé Bourgeois
Sabrina Raincomprix
Alix Kubdel
Mylène Haprèle
Rose Lavillant

Ivan Bruel
Kim Chiến Lê-Ature
Max Kanté
Nathaniel Kurtzberg
Kagami Tsurugi
Marc Anciel
Ondine
Marinette Dupain-Cheng
(One-by-one, the racers take off.)
Tumblr media
ZUKO (V.O.): The rest of the field is now off and running. And though Dupain-Cheng did not complete the previous leg, race officials ruled her radio had been tampered with, so she’ll be allowed to compete, but with a severe time penalty.
(Marinette sits on the runway ready to go. She just has to wait for the countdown, which is longer than the others’ timers.)
Tumblr media
CROWD: …seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, zero!
(The crowd cheers as Marinette sets off over the snowy landscape at max torque.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AANG (V.O.): I’ve never seen someone come back from this far behind. It’s gonna take both horsepower and willpower to even have a chance.
(The others fly high through the clouds as Marinette travels below just above the ocean.)
Tumblr media
(She starts to overtake the other racers one-by-one, starting with Ondine and Marc.)
Tumblr media
(Overtaking Mylène and Alix, Rose glances down and sees Marinette race ahead, leaving the ocean surface rippling in her wake.)
ROSE: Way to go, Marinette!
Tumblr media
(Marinette continues in her relentless climb up the leaderboard by moving ahead of Nino and Alya.)
ALYA: Whoo! Go, girl!
Tumblr media
(She reaches fourth place, just behind Gabriel, Nathalie, and Cash as they approach the Grand Canyon.)
SOKKA (V.O.): Wow. Halfway through the leg, and Marinette Dupain-Cheng has finally caught up to the leaders. What a comeback.
TOPH (V.O.): But is it enough to win?
KATARA (V.O.): Well, considering she started in dead last, and had a time penalty, I think she’s got this in the bag.

Week 4 and I'm now halfway there!
Score: 3.5/5
They can sense what now?
Iroh&Zuko and Katara&Sokka plots were good. I like what the show is doing with Iroh's character and Zuko is probably most like his original version. Okay, maybe is is a bit more like early season 2 Zuko, but still.
Sokka and Katara's sibling argument, though cliché, was nice, especially since it was continuation from the previous episode. The conclusion was a bit quick and awkward, but these kind of side plots often are.
Omashu's tunnels... Were a mixed bag. I like that they are now under the city itself. It seems more fitting in my opinion. The change they did with the crystals felt unnecessary. It was almost like they wanted to show how smart Sokka was by making him to figure them out almost right away but also wanted Katara to be the one proven right. Plus it also felt a bit like they were mocking the original show with the whole "this can't be what the Love is brightest in the dark means" line. And the twist being that the Badgermoles are able to sense love??? Whose idea was that?
I had to check if I was remembering Oma or Shu's genders wrong, but it seems like the show changed Shu to woman. I don't think it added or took anything away from the story. At best it made it a bit ironic that the first Earthbenders were both women even though Earth is the most "macho" element.
Aang and Bumi's plot was definitely the weakest part of the episode. The dialogue was messy and both Aang and Bumi were just using same arguments against each others. And they kept swapping them in same dialogue! Also, why was Bumi's design so... Indian? I noticed it in the last episode already, but now it really annoyed me.
Bumi also suffered from the same issue I have with Zhao. On the paper his character is an excellent foil for Aang. Someone who has lived through the horrors of the 100 year war and has become bitter because of it. It makes sense that there is a character like that in the show. It makes sense and it works. But the thing is... that is not who Bumi is.
Anyhow... It was a good episode if you ignore the Aang and Bumi scenes.
Next week: Winter solstice? I think they have to do it as two part episode. Same with the North Pole.
Well, we will see what happens.

Febuwhump Day 5 - Rope Burns
Fandom: Avatar/Mirror's Edge crossover AU
Characters: Sokka, Bato
Rope Burns
It was supposed to be a milk run: go to the office building in Re-Zoning A, grab the dead drop package, deliver it to the client.
“Do not run! Repeat: do not run!”
Sokka vaulted over a stack of boards and zigzagged away as the blues chasing him opened fire.
“Sokka, there’s a lift in the apartment building up ahead,” Bato’s voice came through his beatLink. “Use it to get to the rooftops.”
“On it!”
Sokka scrambled behind a shipping container and sprinted towards the tarp-covered scaffolding climbing the apartments. He threw himself into the service lift, pounding the button as the blues rounded the container. He ducked a few sandbag pellets before the lift took him out of range.
“They called for backup. OSec’s got a bird en route.”
“What, am I carrying a city-destroying bomb?” Sokka asked with an annoyed sigh, hefting his yellow runner bag.
“Let’s hope not.”
Sokka ran across the rooftops of Glass, a city as striking as it was artificial. In the midst of a massive reconstruction project after the November Riots two years ago, Sokka found his edge. He was a Runner, and a damn good one. Ahead, an OSec VTOL flew into sight, painting him with its targeting laser. Sokka’s beatLink piggybacked the VTOL’s radio channel.
“Control, this is Icarus 1 with eyes on the target.”
“Icarus 1, you are clear to engage.”
The VTOL came to hover over a rooftop in Sokka’s path. Kevlar lines snaked down, followed by enforcers. Sokka dodged between them, sliding behind a large HVAC unit before they could level their air guns at him. Plastic bullets weren’t lethal, usually, but they were incapacitating—and worse, career-ending.
“Bato, I need an out,” Sokka said, hopping across an alley and slamming into an emergency exit door.
“We gotta get you off that block,” Bato said. “There’s a cable across Babbage Boulevard.”
Sokka groaned, but cut left as he made his way towards the cable. He inspected it briefly when he reached it: a high-tension line attached to a data mast that crossed an eight lane road separating the Re-Zoning Districts from Downtown. OSec would be hard-pressed to follow him.
He glanced down at his bare hands.
“Of all the days to not wear gloves,” he said.
Bullets ricocheted off the mast. Without thinking, he flung himself into space. For a moment, he was falling. Then he caught the cable, and gravity pulled him the rest of the way. His hands burned. He could feel his skin being ripped off by the steel cable. Clenching his teeth, he endured the agony to the end, dropping onto a ledge and into cover before checking the damage.
“Fucking ow!”
His hands were a bloody mess. He’d need to stop at a safehouse to bandage up before completing the run.
“Hey, you escaped,” Bato said. “Take this as a lesson not to forget your gloves next time.”
“Yeah, I got it,” Sokka hissed, flexing his fingers.
Pain was a useful teacher, sometimes.

Boiling Rage - Part 1
thanks for the request!!!!
@tobitofunction
“Saw that your open for Zuko request, maybe something about Zuko leaving Mai for the reader and Mai confronting Zuko about it in the boiling rock while reader is there was well”
I loved this idea so i wrote a lot of background too lol here’s part 1! lmk what u guys think in the comments!!! updates maybe a little slow cuz i’m trying to juggle all-honors classes, club softball, theater, and writing so please be patient, thank you! <3
word count 1.1k
~ ~ ~
You wake up to the sound of Zuko’s voice.
“How are you going to get there, on Appa? Last time I checked, prisons don’t have bison daycares.”
This is followed by sigh. Presumably Sokka’s, because he isn’t in his sleeping bag either.
“We’ll take my war balloon.”
What?
Zuko and Sokka are leaving?
Not without me, they’re not, you think.
You know the location of the balloon, and decide to follow the boys on their excursion. You silently slip out of your sleeping bag, and scale the wall of the cliffs surrounding the Western Air Temple. The forest is easy for you to navigate, as you often come there to hunt for meat and collect edible plants. And as a former Kyoshi Warrior, the obstacles and underbrush don’t deter you too much. In no time at all, you make it to the clearing where the war balloon is.
Zuko and Sokka don’t arrive for ten more minutes. When you hear them coming, you crouch in the balloon's basket.
“Okay, here it- AHH! Y/N!?”
You collapse in a fit of giggles at the look on your boyfriend’s face. Sokka appears behind him, gaping at you in shock.
Zuko takes a breath, quickly regaining his composure. “Y/N?” he repeats. “What are
you doing here?”
“Waiting for you guys, obviously,” you reply nonchalantly. “You said that you were taking the war balloon.”
Sokka gives you a smile. “So you’re coming to help?”
“Uhh, yeah. What am I helping with exactly?”
While Sokka explains the plan to liberate his dad, Zuko gets the balloon ready to fly. When he’s all set and you’re caught up to speed, Zuko starts to firebend and the balloon takes off.
You yawn, tired from getting little sleep. Sitting against the edge of the basket, you close your eyes and let the sweet darkness of sleep wash over you.
~ ~ ~
“Pretty clouds,” Sokka says awkwardly, attempting to start a conversation with Zuko.
“Yeah,” Zuko responds. “Fluffy.”
Sokka starts whistling a tune.
“What?” Zuko asks, aggravated.
“What? I didn’t… say anything,” Sokka responds. “You know, a friend of mine actually designed these balloons.”
“No kidding.”
“Yep. A balloon, but for war.”
“If there’s one thing my dad’s good at, it’s war.”
“Yeah, it seems to run in the family,” Sokka agrees accusingly.
“Hey, hold on, not everyone in my family is like that,” Zuko retorts.
“I know, I know, you’ve changed,” Sokka says, attempting to diffuse the tension.
“I meant my uncle,” Zuko mutters. “He was more of a father to me. And I really let him down.”
“I think your uncle would be proud of you. Leaving your home to come help us, that’s hard.”
“It wasn’t that hard,” Zuko admits.
“Really, you didn’t leave behind anyone that you cared about?”
“I had a girlfriend, but we broke up. I have Y/N now, though.” He looked at your sleeping form fondly.
“Is that why you broke up with…”
“Mai? Yeah.”
“Huh. That gloomy girl who sighs a lot?”
“Yeah. I… never really loved her the way I should’ve, but Y/N…” he trails off.
“How’d you meet her, anyway?”
Zuko laughs wryly. “The first time we met, I accidentally burnt down her village. But we met again in Ba Sing Se, when I was working in my uncle’s tea shop. She was kind to me, and at first I pushed her away, but… she was persistent. And eventually, I realized that I loved her. And then we met again here, and, you know.”
“Yeah.”
“What about you?” Zuko asks. “Do you…”
“My first girlfriend turned into the moon.”
“That’s rough, buddy.”
~ ~ ~
“There it is!”
You sit up groggily, and Sokka jumps up excitedly.
“There’s plenty of steam to keep us covered. As long as we’re quiet, we should be able to navigate through it without being caught,” Zuko informs.
You get up and stand beside the boys as you enter the steam cloud. The heat covers you like a wet blanket. And then the balloon starts dropping.
“We’re going down!” Zuko hisses. “The balloon’s not working anymore!”
“The air inside is just as hot as the air outside so we can’t fly!” Sokka replies.
The balloon lists to the side, and you’re all thrown against the wall of the basket. You’re pressed into Zuko, who wraps an arm around you protectively.
“So what are we supposed to do?” your boyfriend says.
“I don’t know, crash landing?”
“Careful not to touch the water,” you warn. “It may splash up on impact.”
The water grows closer until you hit it with a splash. Sokka didn’t listen to your advice, and he yelps as the water hits his hand.
A moment later, the balloon crashes into the shore. You all tumble out of the basket in a tangle of limbs.
As Sokka and Zuko argue about the Water Tribe boy’s impulsiveness, you take in the environment surrounding you. The prison is enormous and imposing, the top of the walls barely visible through the thick steam.
Maybe this wasn’t a good idea, you realize.
~ ~ ~
“I hope these disguises work,” Zuko says. You slide down the visor of your helmet.
“I’m sure they will. Stop worrying, we’ll be fine,” you assure him, squeezing his hand tightly. He gives you a small smile through the helmet’s visor, which you return.
Suddenly, a group of guards runs by the door. “Guards, there’s a scuffle in the yard! Come on,”  calls one of the actual prison guards. You all look at each other, but follow, jogging to keep up.
The scuffle in the yard is “resolved”, and Sokka goes to escort the prisoner to the coolers (whatever that means), but not before saying to meet back there in an hour.
“You! Come help get the prisoners back to their cells!” one of the older guards orders. With a start, you realize he’s talking to you.
Zuko draws in a sharp breath, but you just whisper, “See you in an hour,” and hurry after the guard.
~ ~ ~
You’re gone for much more than an hour. You didn’t realize the sheer number of prisoners before. You you did gain some information about what times the prisoners are fed, and let into the yard, and when they’re forced into jobs like mopping the floors, but   it’s nearly dark by the time you’re done. As soon as you can, you go to look for the boys.
After a while searching, you finally spot Sokka  in the dining hall.
“Hey, guard. What’s up?” you greet him.
“Y/N! Thank the spirits you’re ok. Where were you?”
“I was doing guards jobs,” you mutter. “Where’s Zuko?”
Sokka frowns. “He’s kind of… in a cooler right now?”
