Game 1: SNK Gals Fighters (Jan 2023)

After playing the spiritual successor SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy; I honestly thought I was in for another rough time of a game that didn't flesh it's ideas out. Thankfully SNK Gals Fighters not only delivered a proper game, but sold me entirely on the charm of the Neo Geo Pocket games. Legitimately this game sounds and looks amazing even in this day and age. The graphics and sprites have their own unique sense of style that really helps this game stand out compared to other handheld fighters like it, as well as a fast paced fighting system.

I really can't stress enough how delightful SNK Gals Fighters is. The story is absolutely bare bones, but it provides for a rather fun dynamic throughout the whole cast. Each character looks amazing and all the sprite work is simply amazing to see in action. From simple lights in the background, to all those crazy supers you can do in the game. While not every character is balanced, the majority of the cast pretty much play and feel like they would on a console version of the game. To top that off, the game properly uses the control scheme of the Neo Geo Pocket to it's full extend, and doesn't feel like it watered anything down or made things too confusing.

Doubtful that we will see any competitive play of SNK Gals Fighters, but to say it at least impressed me is more than enough for me to look forward to the Neo Geo Pocket Library. This is absolutely SNK at one of it's best: running with a fun idea, giving players plenty of single player content to unlock, and even a fun little handheld fighter to boot on the system. If you're looking for a good handheld fighter, you really can't go wrong with SNK Gals Fighters.

So SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is a spiritual successor to the old Neo Geo Pocket Color game "SNK Gals' Fighters." For DLC, SNK Heroines added Miss X from SNK Gals' Fighters. In SNK Gals' Fighters, "Miss X" was actually just Iori Yagami crossdressing.

SNK Heroines made the... bold decision to have Iori magically turn into a woman as Miss X, which kind of ruins the appeal of that alter ego.

That doesn't even look like Iori besides the hair.

Though the developers seemed to know this, because if you select "costume 3"...

In regards to the drabble I posted earlier: for those of you not in the know, this is Yuki, who is Kyo's girlfriend.

She's very much the typical girl-next-door type, and is more or less the Keiko to Kyo's Yusuke. You don't see a lot of her in canon, but she does appear in various spinoffs (like KOF: Kyo and SNK Gals Fighters, the latter being the game where she is a playable character).
