Days in Queenstown vol 1
I’m staying in Queenstown for a few days and since a lot has happened already I feel like this is just gonna be short glimpses about the most important/funny/weird things.
So yesterday after having a really slow morning I got ready and headed into town to do some riding around the Skyline Bike Park, but this time I wanted to pedal up instead of using the gondola. Partly to save money but also to get fit again cause I really miss the feeling of how fit I felt last summer. As It turned out there is still room for improvement, the first few turns on the access gravel road, that goes to the top of the gondola, already killed me, real steep, really dusty and in the sun. Fortunately after a while it got just a bit mellower, still hard but at least it was in the shades. Made it to the gondola and started chatting with an older Aussie guy and his local friend and eventually I joined them and we pedalled together further up to do a loop on a singletrail that’s a bit further away from all the bikeparky stuff. They were in their late 50s but were super chill and we got along really well, got some good riding spot tips and in general I just really enjoyed pedalling with other people. At the bottom of the loop we said goodbye, I went back to the car, had some lunch (probably too much, got some serious stomachache during the next uphill) and headed back up for a shorter lap on a more flowy, blue jumptrail called McNearly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So a bit of back story, Andrea was doing this pet sitting near Queenstown, but she also got another pet sitting in Arrowtown (20 min east of Queenstown) that had one day of overlap so last night she could decide where to stay and while she stayed at the “old” place, she let me sleep at the new place, so once again I found myself in someone elses house, in this case with a really old and a bit cranky and needy dog.
Last night, we went for a late birthday dinner (that was generously gifted to me by my sister!) in town. Found a really cool italian place with homemade pasta and everything, had a proper fancy (really tasty!) dinner. The picture on the right was the back of the Menu. I loved some of these statements or answers or whatever they are, especiall the Office reference! Oh and saw a busker playing the piano by the lake..That was special. Like it really touched me on a really deep level. The music was amplyfing my sense of gratutide I guess and it was also like a musical interpretation of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This morning I went for a short hike with Andrea and the not so old dog (called Wally, see picture) which was pretty and we could see the area from a different perspective (if you’re on the top of most of the hills around Queenstown the view is almost always pretty similar. Pretty, but similar).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the hike we somehow ended up talking about flexibility and I made some interesting realizations. In the past weeks I felt like I am not really able to slow down properly and I just keep doing stuff, go on rides, hikes, go from A to B, but I never really reflect on it besides writing the blog and also like I am not really trying to figure out some of the internal things that I thought of focusing on while being here, long story short I felt like I am stagnating in my personal development and just kinda cruising. Which now that I think about it should be allowed and fine but I just didn’t feel good about it. Anyway, somehow flexibility came up as a topic and through the conversation I was able to reflect on it and realize that I actually got so much better at it since I am here, like with all the uncertainty of “where am I gonna sleep tomorrow” and all that, I can absolutely see how much lighter I am holding the whole topic and that I have this strong sense that I am going to be able to figure it out and I am not so fixated on certain plans or ideas like I was even a month or two months ago. Well what is that if not progress?! I was super happy once I put this together and could see the step(s) I made. Of course I can’t know for sure but my gutt tells me that this is not just a fleating experience and I will be able to take this “new skill” and integrate it into my life once I settle again somewhere.
When we got back to the house with the old dog, 2 minutes after we got back I managed to step into something that at first felt like squishy food but turned out to be dog poop. In the house. In the living room. I was only wearing socks. This did not spark joy. Had to wash my feet and get rid of the socks for good..It is an old dog yeah, half blind and everything but still. There is a dog door so I really don’t know how the dog managed to sneak some poop into the house..2 minutes later we found out that she (or the cat, we are not 100% sure) ate half a box of my chocolate chip cookies. The cookies were in a plastic box, and the plastic box was in a cardboard box on the couch…Sneaky fella gave us a heart attack cause yeah, dogs aren’t supposed to eat chocolate but Andrea contacted the owner and she said it’s alright, the dog will live. Pfuah. That kinda turned off my interest that I developed in the past days to try pet sitting haha. Oh yeah this is the cat who apparently likes to drink from the tap so when she(?) sits in the sink that mostly means that she is thirsty.
Tumblr media
After all the dog drama (and the grieving of my beloved cookies) I packed up my things (I am staying at a campsite in Queenstown for 3 nights) and drove to Queenstown for the bike coaching. I really enjoyed it, didn’t necessarily learn too many new things, I wanted to focus on jumping technique and I’ve done a jump course in the past (and watched a bunch of tutorial videos) but this time I got the full attention of the coach (who was really nice btw, british dude who moved here 18 years ago) and he just phrased the whole thing in a different way that slowly started to klick. Now I just gotta practice practice practice to overwrite the years of bad technique. Got some great riding tips as well, I may check out some of that stuff tomorrow if my wrist still feels fine. Talking about wrist, it felt quite okay today even though this was my second day of riding in a row, stoked about that!
This is just me using the roof of the car as a drying rack after the ride today.
Tumblr media
Another cool bit, I have been thinking about getting some grease for my bike cause my front axle is bone dry and it should not be like that but I didn’t want to buy a whole tube of grease cause I won’t use the rest of it and I haven’t had the courage to walk into a shop and ask them to just grease it for me…Guess what, while cooking dinner today, I found out that the guy next to me is a mechanic and I asked him if he has some grease with him, sure he does, he actually gave me what he got cause he is flying home soon…What are the chances?! Should talk about my “needs” more haha.
Fun fact I made the worst dinner of my life today, not necessarily tastewise (although it doesn’t taste like much), but the texture man, the texture…Wanted to roast some cooked potatoes, broccoli, zucchini, spring onions and some Tofu, put some spices on it and that’s it but the potato got too soft while cooking and once I mixed it with the other things it just turned into one big mash of something that rather looks like disgusting leftovers than actual food…After complaining about it to someone in the kitchen got some tips to fill it into wraps which is a great idea actually, will get some wraps tomorrow!
That’s it for today.
Obligatory song suggestion:
Twenty One Pilots - Shy Away
As far as I know this song is about Tyler (lead singer of the band) talking to his brother and encouraging him to go after his dream. Well even if it isn’t it is a great track and I listened the hell out of it when it came out, plus today while hiking we talked about what we tell people when they express how jealous they are that we get to travel like this. Long story short if you are someone thinking about doing something similar this is a sign that you should just fuckin’ GO FOR IT. If you got a thousand questions and you don’t even know where to start just know that it’s normal, but you don’t have to know the answer to all of them right from the start. One challenge at a time. And regarding the financial part, yes I am aware that I am in a privileged situtation but I don’t think that this is the only way to do it. You can go more budget, get a job, plan the costs a bit more etc. Last but not least ask yourself if it is really that important to own a car or a flat or a house or 15 guitars or God knows what. If it is that’s totally fine each their own but if you are maybe willing to give up on those things then the whole travelling thing could suddenly become more realistic. Okay I’ll stop, this wasn’t meant to be a whole motivational speech…

Local guides offer insights into the islands’ ecosystems, cultural significance, and safety protocols. - Reputable Tour Companies Research and select reputable tour operators known for their commitment to safety and sustainability. Many companies emphasize small group sizes, ensuring personalized attention and a more intimate experience. - Local Knowledge Guides with local knowledge can provide a deeper understanding of the area, sharing stories about its history, culture, and wildlife. Engaging with local guides also supports the community, contributing to sustainable tourism practices. - Customized Adventures For those seeking unique experiences, many tour companies offer customizable itineraries. Whether you want to combine hiking and kayaking or focus on diving and snorkeling, you can tailor your adventure to match your interests. Personal Stories and Experiences One of the most enriching aspects of traveling in the South Pacific is the opportunity to hear personal stories from fellow adventurers. Each traveler brings a unique perspective, often inspiring others to embark on their own journeys. - Stories from Fellow Travelers During my trip to Fiji, I met a couple who had just completed a week-long sailing adventure through the Mamanuca Islands. They shared tales of exploring hidden beaches, snorkeling with vibrant marine life, and enjoying sunset dinners on remote islands. Their passion for adventure was contagious and inspired me to consider a sailing trip in the future. - Cultural Connections While hiking in Samoa, I encountered a local guide who shared stories of his ancestors and the significance of the trails we were traversing. His passion for preserving his culture and sharing it with visitors added depth to my experience, reminding me of the importance of connecting with local communities. Preparation Tips for Adventure Activities Proper preparation is key to enjoying your adventure in the South Pacific. Here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and memorable experience: - Research Your Destination Before embarking on your adventure, research the best times to visit, local customs, and the required permits for certain activities. Each island may have its own regulations, so understanding these beforehand can help avoid any surprises. - Pack the Right Gear Ensure you have the necessary gear for your chosen activities. For snorkeling, bring a well-fitting mask and snorkel, while hiking may require sturdy footwear and a hydration pack. If you plan to engage in water sports, consider bringing reef-safe sunscreen to protect the marine environment. - Stay Hydrated and Nourished Adventure activities can be physically demanding, so it’s important to stay hydrated and fueled. Carry water and snacks to keep your energy levels up throughout the day, especially during hikes or extended outings. Connecting with Nature One of the greatest joys of exploring the South Pacific is the opportunity to connect with nature. Engaging with the natural environment enhances your travel experience and fosters a deeper appreciation for the beauty around you. - Mindful Exploration Take time to pause during your adventures to soak in the beauty of your surroundings. Whether it’s the sound of waves crashing against the shore or the rustle of leaves in the wind, these moments of mindfulness can enhance your connection to the environment. - Wildlife Observation Respect the wildlife you encounter and observe from a distance. Many islands have unique ecosystems and endangered species, so being mindful of your impact is crucial to preserving these natural treasures. - Sustainable Practices Participating in eco-friendly practices while enjoying your adventure contributes to the preservation of the South Pacific. Opt for sustainable tour operators, minimize waste, and leave no trace as you explore the islands. Conclusion The South Pacific is a haven for adventure enthusiasts, offering an array of thrilling activities against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty. From snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs to hiking through lush rainforests, the adventures you embark on will leave you with unforgettable memories. Day 5: Tuesday 24th September, 2024 [Rotorua]
Breakfast: Brownie & a latte Lunch: Another bloody buffet! Dinner: Pizza
Today is Amara’s birthday and I had taken charge of booking all of our activities for the day. We headed off at 10am to the Polynesian Spa for a morning soak. I’d booked the adults only section and was grateful. The whole place stunk of eggs (sulphur) but the views were lovely and the 40 degree pools were delightful. We spent about an hour in the pools, trying them all, and even filming a silly synchronized swimming routine. We then headed back to the house for a quick shower and outfit change for the rest of the day.
We drove to Skyline Rotorua to ride the gondolas up to the Stratosfare restaurant that overlooked the city. Upon arrival at the restaurant, we realised it was a buffet! We all got the giggles as we realised it was our third consecutive buffet meal. Yet again, everyone but me devoured their share of seafood and I stuck to a tasty roast and then some beef, rice and kimchi. We ordered a bottle of rose for the table from the local winery and it was delicious! I’d booked a winery tasting at the Volcanic Hills winery on the top level, so we were excited to try more and purchase a bottle. Before the end of our meal, the staff brought over a dessert and card for Amara’s birthday, which was lovely.
After lunch we headed to our wine tasting. The manager of Volcanic Hills was a guy named Brent and he was loose. He was very enamoured with the fact that were were Austraian and made lots of Kath and Kim references whilst talking to us. He was also very intrigued by us being Drama teachers and asked us many questions about the conference that we were going to in Wellington. The wines we tried were very tasty - Amara liked the room temp chardonnay and Tim like the Syrah but we all agreed that the rose was still our favourite. We bought 2 bottles to take home.
Fun facts about New Zealand from Brent:
All petrol in New Zealand is imported which is what makes it so expensive (currently 2.35p/L)
Cars are also imported and cheaper - he said a second hand Toyota Camry was around $4k.
There are no pubs in New Zealand, like the ones we have in Australia. The drinking culture is to invite people to your home and host them there. This blew Tim’s mind, but I quite liked the idea of it. I always prefer hosting people than going out for overpriced food and drinks.
Outside, Tim, Amara and Jane decided to go luging. I’d been in 2016 when I was in Queenstown and decided to go for a walk instead. I walked through the cherry blossom trees and took a few photos of the city, which was very photogenic. They had a great time and all came back beaming.
We left at 5pm and drove over to the Redwood Forest. Jane said it was disappointing that it was man made, in that the trees were not native to New Zealand. I didn’t mind though as I think Redwoods are stunning. Tim had booked us tickets to the evening treetop walk and we were an hour early, so we went for a walk through the forest instead. We walked around 3km and as it got darker, everyone started stressing about not being able to find our way back. Tim seemed confident in his sense of direction, but Amara then used Maps to figure out where to go. We made it back safely with out 10 minutes until our booking, so we lined up and waited.
I was originally excited to go on the walk and see of the light installations, but as soon as we stepped onto the first suspension bridge, I became very anxious and wasn’t having fun being up high on a wobbly bridge. I had no choice but to continue, but Tim was walking with lots of bounce in his step, which was making it worse! Jane was nice and checked in on me, but after a while I just hung back so I could walk the bridges by myself. At one point there was an option to go higher and I let the others go ahead and just walked as quickly as possible through the rest of the path until I was back on the ground. We’d booked the right time as when I got back to the bottom there was a ginormous queue with lots of families and a school group. No thank you!
Back in the car I ordered pizza for dinner using UberEATS and it arrived shortly after we got home. We ordered from Pizza Peddler and it was outstanding. We had a classic BBQ Meatlovers and a Camembert, chicken and bacon pizza. We ate these while watching the second Hobbit movie, which I didn’t really pay much attention to as I was writing this blog.
Off to Napier tomorrow! A town that Jane is excited to visit for its landscape and Art Deco history.

Unplanned day in Queenstown
So today turned out differently than planned but was still fun. Was supposed to go to Coronet Peak and ride in the bike park but pretty much just before taking the turn to go up the mountain I decided to check if they’re actually open and as it turned out they just switched from a 7 days a week to a 5 days a week schedule and monday tuesday are the off days..I was a bit pissed cause I was really looking forward to riding those trails, saw a bunch of videos but fortunately there was a plan B option, bit more expensive but what the hell I am partly here to ride bikes so I decided to go to Queenstown (20min away) and ride the bike park in town called Skyline.
Btw way the drive from Wanaka to Queenstown was really pretty and a looooot of turns (in the end there were some seriously tight switchbacks!) but I only took one of course. See below.
Anyway as I was on the outskirts of Queenstown I really started having this feeling that this place just flippin reeks of money..Not sure about its origins but for many years now the town has been the capital of extreme sports and it literally became one of the most expensive cities in New Zealand. The views are also nice of course. Mountain biking, bunjee jumping, skiing (in winter), water sports, sky diving and God knows what else, you can do it here. Long story short this place is packed with tourists. Plus since the town is cramped between mountains and a lake the streets are narrow, steep and cars are parking everywhere so my first attempt to park for free failed and I drove to the parking house next to the lift which is of course super expensive (6 bucks per hour…was planning to stay the whole day..you can imagine)..I put on all my gear, accepted my faith that this is gonna be one hell of an expensive day, rolled to the ticket office where the scottish dude was kind enough to give me some tips on where to park for free nearby, so I put the bike back in the car in a haste, paid my 6 bucks for the “hour” and drove off to the free spot which was only like a 5 min bike ride from the bottom of the gondola. Bike out, dress up, here we go again.
So about prices. Full day bike park entry was 129 NZD which is around 70 EUR. Yeppp. Even Schladming is cheaper in Austria and there you can ride two bike parks..(and shuttle in between by bus). Oh well. Once again. Here to ride bikes!
Bought my ticket and did a first lap on a blue trail which turned out to be super rough and blown out not to mention the 10 cm deep dust in some corners. Oh yeah the trail grading system here is a bit different. In Europe it’s really similar (or the exact same?!) like in skiing, blue-red and black is the most difficult. Not here. There are a few (didn’t count it) shades of blue and then two black ones, diamond and double diamond. So the blue trail I rode was already idk, somewhere in the middle I guess. Or maybe it was only hard cause how ridden out it was..not sure. Anyway for the second lap I teamed up with a pair of swiss guys and a brazilian dude who works at skyline and he showed us some black trails, that were pretty techy but less fast, so while I felt a bit out of comfort due to little riding time, they also felt like home a bit more compared to the faster stuff.
After the 2nd lap I felt like my wrist needs some rest so I went back up but did a bigger loop that included a 30-40 min singletrack-uphill part that’s more scenic and whatnot. Well that was absolutely worth it! Really cool trail in the forest among ferns and bit trees, small streams to cross, and at the end after a short but steep climb gorgeous views with barely any people! Felt more in my element! The downhill trail I took was a blue one but my Lord these would be at least red if not black ones in Austria..this trail linked into a flowy amazing flow/small jump trail that I’ll definitely revisit on my way to the north!
I gotta say there are some really crazy drops and jumps and gaps around here, for those of you who don’t know half of the world cup downhill riders ride here in the winter season and the other half lives here (bit of exeggeration but you get the picture), most of them actually left the last week or so and it’s just obvious that some of the features are built for them..
Had a lunch break and went for three more laps and decided to call it a day as my palms were starting to hurt real bad, the wrist also needed a break especially after two days of riding and I still had to drive 1,5 hours to the next campsite.
Pfuah. Wrote all this on my phone. I’ll reconsider it next time.
Tomorrow i’m meeting Andrea and we do some hikes and walks and stuff around the Fjords in the southwestern part of New Zealand. Should be neat!
Obligatory song recommendation:
The Maine - Girls just wanna have fun
In the morning took the nostalgia train and listened to all the punk goes pop cover albums that I used to love. This one is a really cool rock song, as far as I know the original one is really poppy.
