It seems we may be getting the full backstory of the Heretic and the Wanderer, or maybe this is him fighting alongside the Gelfling in the Garthim Wars? I think the former is more likely, but I can’t wait for the Dark Crystal stories of this anthology!! This has me even more excited for them!!

Here’s my analysis of skekGra’s story from the comic so far;

If you haven’t read it for yourself yet and don’t want spoilers, don’t read this just yet!

First, let’s talk about the twins, more specifically why them being twins is so important here.

This is a subplot sourced directly from JM Lee’s books: the Skeksis want to sever their connection to the Mystics for good, in fact they want to get rid of the Mystics without destroying themselves in the process.

The Skeksis view themselves and the Mystics as technically twins; they are “identical but distinct” as skekGra puts it. skekTek wants a pair of Gelfling twins to experiment on to find a solution to their problem.

This doesn’t really make sense because the connection between Gelfling twins could not be more different from that between the Skeksis and Mystics. I guess they’re trying to determine if there’s a spiritual connection between Gelfling twins similar to theirs? But that’s a discussion for another time.

Este and Vera as identical twins are perfect candidates. skekGra uses his closeness to their mother to bring them in as his personal guard, its the perfect coverup for the real reason they’re being brought to the Castle.

Now let’s look at skekGra and what exactly leads him to have such a close friendship with the twins when he initially hired them for nefarious reasons.

Before I read the comic, I was expecting skekGra to be this absolutely feral, uncontrollable warlord who went about slaughtering everything in sight to establish Skeksis control over Thra.

Control is part of it, but only as a means of neutralizing the threats that come about on Thra, the Arathim for example. When skekTek refers to him as an exterminator, skekGra tells him that conquest isn’t about extermination, then he reaches up to one of skekTek’s cages while saying that the “animals everywhere to be seen” that skekTek mentions can “think and feel and reason”. skekGra appears to have limits to his conquests, because he sees value in the lives of Thra’s creatures that the other Skeksis can’t.

I didn’t think skekGra had any empathy at this time in his life before he had the vision, but seeing the way he talks about the animals in skekTek’s lab and how he treats the twins as he spends more time with them, it’s pretty clear that he had always been somewhat different from the others.

His friendship with Este and Vera is so genuine, he’s learning from them just as much as they’re learning from him, and they’re having so much fun, and that makes his reaction to skekTek harming them so incredibly heartbreaking.

And it makes sense now why he and the Wanderer want to help the Gelfling so badly in Age of Resistance; it’s not just about them wanting to become one again, they genuinely care for the Gelfling. He has the chance to save them now when he couldn’t before.

But what exactly is going to happen in the next parts of the story, after the Scientist has killed Vera and injured the Conqueror so horrifically?

My theory is that, for one, Este is not leaving that Castle alive now that she’s witnessed the true nature of the Skeksis first hand in the worst way possible. Something is definitely going to happen to her.

Secondly, skekTek and skekGra are going to be put on trial before the Emperor. skekTek caused the most physical harm in the fight, but skekGra is most definitely going to be the one punished, not for brutally attacking one of his kind (the Skeksis fight each other all the time so let’s be real that’s not going to matter), but for interfering with the Scientist’s very important research.

The Emperor is most likely pressuring the Scientist to conduct this this research into getting rid of the Mystics and get it done ASAP, so skekGra delaying the process is not ideal. He already kept the twins away from skekTek for a year, and now this.

skekGra is then going to call everyone out on their heartlessness and bullshit philosophies, more specifically the Emperor, and this could get particularly nasty if something has already happened to Este. For his defiance and blasphemy, he will be stripped of the title “Conqueror”, labeled “Heretic”, and banished from the Castle forever.

Finally, in a state of shock and grief after everything that’s occurred, skekGra will blindly roam across Thra until at some point he ends up in the Crystal Desert where he consumes urdrupe berries out of extreme hunger, and has his vision about the future of Thra and the Skeksis & Mystics needing to become one again.

When he recovers, he will find himself face-to-face with a Mystic, bearing the same exact head injury, and having seen the same exact vision. urGoh the Wanderer. His twin.

I could definitely be completely off because this first part was not something I expected AT ALL, but I can’t wait to see the rest of this story unfold!
