Ginny Baker in Sixteen Candles (1984)
Blanche Baker is an American actress who is best known for appearing in the miniseries Holocaust (1979) and playing Ginny Baker (Samantha Baker’s sister) in Sixteen Candles (1984).
Baker was born in New York City and is the daughter of actress Carroll Baker and her father is director Jakob Garfein who grew up in Bardejov, Czechoslovakia during the time of Nazism. He was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 13 and survived numerous concentration camps. He was an orphan when he arrived in America in 1952.
Baker grew up in Italy, where her mother was working during the 1960s. Baker attended an American school in Rome and afterwards studied acting. Baker is married and has four children.
In 1980-1981, she was aged 24 when she played Lolita on stage in New York. The play only lasted 12 performances and flopped. Feminists who were against the theme of paedophilia picketed outside the theatre.
Baker has acted in both films and television and is best known for playing Ginny Baker in Sixteen Candles which was written and directed by John Hughes and filmed in Chicago.
Sixteen Candles is about a high school student, Samantha Baker whose family forgets her 16th birthday due to her older sister, Ginny getting married the next day. The next day Sam’s mother apologizes to her for forgetting her birthday. At the wedding, Ginny has her period and takes medication to ease her cramps. W A T C H E D
I've seen my share of John Hughes movies. He was the most successful 80s-90s writer.
National Lampoon's Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Mr. Mom, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller, 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles', The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, Home Alone 1 & 2, Only the Lonely, Baby's Day Out, Dennis the Menace, Miracle on 34th Street (1994), Dutch...
I just haven't seen any of the MOLLY RINGWALD ones. Well, time to play catchup.
ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL is really clever young actor, more than I ever noticed previously.

This Month In History - May
This is a big month for landmark pop culture anniversaries. Here are a few I'm celebrating:
May 4, 1984: Sixteen Candles opens
In May 1984, the beginning of John Hughes' teen movie streak began. There are a lot of things about this movie that have not aged well and quite frankly are just wrong (too many things to discuss briefly in this column). But credit does need to go to Molly Ringwald for tapping into a relatable teen who is being ignored by her family and is pining for a boy at school who just might like her too. Credit also goes to Anthony Michael Hall as Farmer Ted, a LOL funny nerd who helps her. While there has been a revisionist take on this in recent years (most notably some criticism from Ringwald herself), let's blow out 40 candles for Sixteen Candles!
May 8, 2009: Star Trek opens
In May 2009, J.J. Abrams' first Star Trek reboot was released. It is the best Star Trek movie yet! Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 15 ST!
May 10, 1994: The Blue Album released
In May 1994, Weezer's self-titled debut (better known as The Blue Album) was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 30th Blue Album!
May 13, 1994: The Crow opens
In May 1994, one of the great comic book adaptations of the 90s was released. In the last few years at at conventions I've been fortunate enough to talk to cast members Ernie Hudson and Bai Ling. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 30th The Crow!
May 19, 1999: Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace opens
In May 1999, possibly the most anticipated movie in history was released. George Lucas returned to the director's chair for the first chapter of a prequel trilogy to his legendary Star Wars trilogy (Episodes 4-6). I saw it opening day (bought tickets weeks earlier) with a group of friends and then saw it again the following week to dissect what I saw the first time. After the initial thrill of "Holy shit - it's a new Star Wars movie I can't believe it!", there set in a sense of "This is what we waiting this long for?". There was no way in hell this movie could possibly live up to the expectations the fans had set. But I have returned to on video and DVD many times over the years including the 2012 re-release in 3-D. Without the hype and fanfare it wasn’t bad. There’s been quite a few revisionist appraisals of Ep 1 in recent years. Does it come anywhere close to Episodes 4-6? No way! But is it cool to learn about Anakin and Obi-Wan's early days? Definitely! Happy 25 Episode I!
May 23, 1984: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom opens
In May 1984, the second Indiana Jones movie opened. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 40th Indy 2!
May 24, 1989: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade opens
In May 1989, the third Indiana Jones movie opened. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 35th Indy 3!
May 25, 1969: Midnight Cowboy opens
In May 1969, the first and only X-rated movie to win a Best Picture Oscar was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 55th MC!
May 25, 1979: Alien opens
In May 1979, the first Alien movie was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 45th Alien!
May 29, 2009: Drag Me to Hell opens
In May 2009, one of Sam Raimi's more underrated films was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 15 DMTH!

Throwback to stupider times 3/
Sixteen Candles Movie, 1984, Molly Ringwald
To be fair this movie is intended to be harmless and fun, and some of it is, but some of it really isn't. I'm not even going to get into most of this mess, but Jake Ryan handing his practically-passed-out-drunk ex-girlfriend Caroline over to The Geek, and basically encouraging him to have sex with her, is so wrong that it isn't even partly excused by happening in 1984. The worse thing is that when Caroline wakes up the next morning and doesn't even remember what happened, she still thinks she must have "liked it." Thanks a lot for telling a generation that date rape isn't a thing, John Hughes.
#1984#Sixteen Candles movie#throwback to stupider times#of course it wasn't the only movie saying this but it was a big one
