Schoolbags and back pain in children: Weight of the world on their shoulders

A lot has been said about the heavy school bag – but none of it has lifted a kilo from the monstrous load our children carry every day.

For a weeklong backpacking trip in the Himalayas – which requires at least a month’s preparation and specialized clothing and equipment for roughing it out in the wilderness – one is asked to carry a rucksack that weighs no more than 10 kgs. Most domestic fights keep the hand baggage limit at 7 kg. But, somehow, it is okay for a 12-year-old to carry on his or her back, a bag that weighs 11 kgs – just for a day’s study at the survey of the kind of bags children carry to and from school, daily.

In 1993, the Yash Pal Committee identified the problem of heavy school bags and recommended that textbooks be treated as school property and allotted locker space at the institute. It continued to recommend that a separate timetable be prepared for homework and classwork, so that these books don’t need to be carried home every day.

BM’s test run proved that even 24 years on, schoolchildren continued to carry heavy load on their backs, some exceeding 11 kgs.

Paediatric Orthopedecian in Bangalore Dr. Jayanth S Sampath expresses that according to international guidelines children should not carry more than 10 per cent of their body weight on their shoulders. By that measure, the above-mentioned Class 8 student shouldn’t have carried more than 5.6 kg. Ideally. We also found a girl studying in Class 6, and weighing about 30 kgs, carrying a bag that weighed 8 kgs — way above what was good for her.

Mirror spoke with VP Niranjanaradhya on this issue. He was part of a committee set up by the Department of State Educational Research and Training to suggest the right bag weight for students. The committee, which had experts, officials and representatives from NGOs, had conducted a survey in 24 Bengaluru schools spanning across boards before giving out a detailed report.

“Children end up becoming victims of the urban rat race. It’s not only a physical burden, but also affects them psychologically. The mental burden comes from the curriculum that needs to be toned down. This is an indication that there should be a standard conclusion drawn by the state or Centre,” says Niranjanaradhya.

He says it’s time to draw a standard for these things — what a student of each class should carry and what they need to learn. “Knowledge and information has been misconstrued by many people. We are continuously dumping information onto the child,” he adds. “We have also submitted a report to the state government on this issue. The state has never called us, nor are they bothered about it.”

In July 2015, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of School Education and Literacy, sent out an order to the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education department (a copy is with BM). The central government had suggested to lighten this burden by prompting- provisions may be made to keep the textbooks largely at the school and Daily time-table may be framed in such a way that all subjects are not taught every day.

According to the panel report, students carry school bags that are 20-30 per cent heavier than what is safe. “Because of this, around 60 per cent of the students below the age of 10 suffer from orthopedic as well as stress-induced ailments,” he said. Shashi Kumar, general secretary, the associated managements of private unaided English- medium schools in Karnataka (KAMS), said: “Such weights are unscientific and abnormal for children.”

Vani Manjunath, a principal, too believes that there should be concerned efforts from all parties to ensure children don’t carry such heavy bags. “There are schools that want students to bring all the books, every day. Even parents do not object to this.”

Parents, however, claim they have little option — the timetables are such. Kamal Nair, a parent, said: “School timetable is such that they have to take all textbooks every day.”

Even CBSE had issued a notification in April 2016, aimed at restricting the number of textbooks carried by students to school every day. But despite all the lip-service, the fact of the matter remains heavy on slight shoulders.

A WEIGHTY ISSUE: BM’s random check on school bags across the city proved that children carry a load that’s way beyond what’s acceptable. Experts say, constant weight on the shoulders can cause a stoop, damage lungs, and affect their growing bones and muscles. And that’s just the physical part of it

No Bags Day

There are many schools in the city that declare a day in a week as ‘No Bags Day’. When BM was doing the test drive, Janak Academy on Bannerghatta Road had declared every Tuesdays as ‘No Bags Day’. The idea was to help students feel more positive.

Mousumi Banerjee, principal of the school, said: “We see children happier on this day. This is more like encouraging children for peer learning and it’s a day for them to learn all the lessons, practically.”

About the heavy bags, she said: “We ensure students carry what is required. We have structured the time table in such a way that students are not burdened. I feel, parents should join hands with the school management to make this an effective practice among children.”

Pediatric orthopedics in the city say they see several cases of back pain in children aged below 16 years. If this trend continues, children will develop chronic back pain and a hunch. We should not be burdening the growing bones of a child’s spine with such abnormal loads.”

Paediatric Orthopedecian in Bangalore added: “A 7-year-old boy had come to me complaining of back pain. This was rare a few years ago but we are seeing such cases several times a week. These days, kids lack Vitamin D and have poor muscle strength due to lack of activities and sports. This increases the risk of developing back problems. We know from previous research that children with back pain are at a greater risk of having chronic backache as adults. Heavy school bags is a public health issue and schools should seriously address this by taking necessary action.”

Newer ideas such as a semester curriculum in schools, and combining subjects in a single text book will certainly help. “Engage your children in moderate-intensity sports such as swimming or field sports. US Anchor stirs controversy after he says India did not build any marvels before Britishers

After a US anchor made a statement about how British colonialism is the reason behind the beauty of India and said that after the Britishers had gone, India was not able to make any marvelous structures, there is a new row of controversy stirred on social Media. Politician Shashi Tharoor along with several other Twitter users have become angry about the unethical statements made by the journalist Tucker Carlson, Fox News anchor.

Carlson also said that even before the British Colonial era in India, there were no marvels made by the Indians. Twitter users have condemned him calling him "racist" and "supremely uninformed".

Speaking on his show Tucker Carlson Tonight, the anchor said that the British rule in India was way beyond just genocide".

"Strong countries dominate weak countries. This trend hasn't changed. At least the English took their colonial responsibility seriously. They didn't just take things, they added. We (the United States) left Afghanistan, we left airstrips, weapons, and guns. When the British pulled out of India, they left behind an entire civilization, a language, a legal system, schools, churches, and public buildings, all of which are still in use today," said Mr. Carlson can be seen saying in a clip that went viral on social media.

He then referred to Mumbai's Victoria Terminus station which was renamed in 2016 as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and said, "And after 75 years of independence, has that country produced a single building as beautiful as the Bombay train station that the British colonials built?"

There were hundreds and thousands of comments below the clip in no time including the ones from politician Shashi Tharoor. "I think Twitter ought to have an option for something to press when you can't respond without losing your cool. For now, I will content myself with," Mr. Tharoor tweeted, adding two angry-face emojis in response.

Did Facebook go easy on hate speech by an Indian lawmaker belonging to the governing BJP to protect its interests in its biggest market? A Wall Street Journal report, based on interviews with current and former Facebook employees, suggests so, and it prompted immediate calls for an investigation. Soutik Biswas reports on the aftermath.

In its report, the WSJ said Facebook deleted some hateful anti-Muslim posts by T Raja Singh, a lawmaker from India's southern Telangana state only after the paper asked about them.

The paper reported that Facebook employees had decided in March that Mr Singh's post violated the company's hate speech rules and qualified as dangerous. But the firm's top public policy executive in India, Ankhi Das, opposed applying "hate speech rules to Mr Singh and at least three other Hindu nationalist individuals and groups flagged internally for promoting or participating in the violence".

Ms Das, the paper said, told employees that "punishing violations by politicians from Mr Modi's party would damage the company's business prospects in the country".

The WSJ report has sparked calls by opposition MPs for investigations into Facebook's conduct in India.

The leader of the main opposition Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, led the charge. He alleged that the BJP, and its ideological fountainhead, RSS, were "controlling" Facebook in India.

India's information technology minister Ravi Shankar promptly responded. He alluded to his previous remarks in 2018 about "numerous reports" of Congress involvement with Cambridge Analytica and asking Mr Gandhi to "explain" the company's role in his social media outreach. (That year India had taken down the local website of Cambridge Analytica following allegations the company used personal data of 50 million Facebook members to influence the US presidential elections.)

With more than 340 million users, India is Facebook's biggest market. In April Facebook announced it was investing $5.7bn (£4.6bn) in cut-price Indian mobile internet company Reliance Jio, owned by the country's richest person Mukesh Ambani. This would give Facebook a major foothold in India, where its WhatsApp chat service has 400m users and is about to launch a payments service.

I reached out to Facebook with a list of detailed questions. I asked why Facebook had not taken down Mr Singh's posts earlier, what it did with the lawmaker's account, and how many pages had been taken down and accounts suspended in India for hate speech.

"We prohibit hate speech and content that incites violence and we enforce these policies globally without regard to anyone's political position or party affiliation. While we know there is more to do, we're making progress on enforcement and conduct regular audits of our process to ensure fairness and accuracy," a Facebook spokesperson replied in an email response. The firm did not provide any more details.

Separately, Andy Stone, a Facebook spokesman, acknowledged to WSJ that Ankhi Das had "raised concerns about the political fallout that would result from designating Mr Singh a dangerous individual, but said her opposition wasn't the sole factor in the company's decision to let Mr Singh on the platform". Mr Stone told me he had nothing more to add.

The BJP lawmaker T Raja Singh said his official page on Facebook with 300,000 followers was "hacked and deleted" in 2018 and he had complained about it to the local cyber crime detectives. "I don't know whether it was misused," he told me.

He said Facebook might have recently taken down pages floated by his followers and containing inflammatory content. He said his followers might have "uploaded hate speech" on these pages.

"Sometimes I go to public meetings and talk in style. My followers might have uploaded those videos", Mr Singh, the sole BJP legislator in the 119-member elected Telangana state assembly said. Mr Stone told WSJ that Facebook is still considering whether it will ban the legislator.

When I asked him why he would post such incendiary content Mr Singh said: "There are a lot of anti-socials in my area. I counter them in their language, sometimes it is communal". He said his Instagram account, which was still active, was not being operated by him.

This is not the first time allegations have been raised that Facebook is favouring the governing party.

A series of articles by journalists Cyril Sam and Paranjoy Guha Thakurta in 2018, wrote about the social media platform's "dominant position in India with more than a little help from friends of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP", among other things. (The articles also looked at the Congress party's own "relations with Facebook".)

The Congress party's chief of data analytics, Praveen Chakravarty, says he met senior Facebook officials in the US and India in 2018 and "discussed the issue of bias and partisanship of their India leadership team" and denying to accept party advertisements relating to a controversial fighter jet deal by the government. "I was told that it will be looked into but nothing happened," he says.

Last year, Derek O'Brien, a lawmaker belonging to the opposition Trinamul Congress party, raised the issue in the parliament. "Facebook censors anti-BJP news. Its algorithm censors anti-BJP news," Mr O'Brien said in a short speech. When I reached out to him at the weekend, Mr O'Brien said: "There are other important issues to raise in the parliament, but this will not go unnoticed."

Shashi Tharoor, a prominent Congress MP who heads a parliamentary committee on information technology, says he believes the "recent revelations raise questions that require explanation".

"The subject is serious because of Facebook's extensive reach in India and the potential for hate speech to incite violence and other unlawful behaviour. How worrying this is to be determined after a hearing process is concluded, not on the basis of media reports," he told me.

Chinmayi Arun, a fellow at the Information Society Project at Yale Law School, says it is difficult to assess Facebook's record without access to the company's data in India.

"There are contexts in which they have reacted swiftly or improved their policies based on feedback. But the system for implementation is opaque and one is unlikely to hear about the sort of incident that the WSJ reported unless insiders share information only available to Facebook," Ms Arun told me.

In its latest biannual Community Standards Enforcement Report, Facebook said it had taken action against more than 20 million pieces of hate speech content that had violated its community standards between January and March. But in its biggest market, many say the social media behemoth needs to do more.
