Skam fic love fest | Day 6: Recommendations

I’ve read lost of wonderful evak fics. fics that made me cry. fics that made me laugh out loud. fics that i couldn’t stop reading until I was done. I’m happy to share my favorites (arranged by word count, ascending). I put a heart in front of those fics that are my absolute favorites.

Even and Yousef open a 1950s American-style restaurant together - Even is the creative genius in the kitchen, Yousef keeps the trains running on time, and Isak, Chris B, and Magnus are all along for the ride. four movements on a first wedding by chevythunder/ @icelandcurry | Isak's spent years keeping his distance to Even, worried that any kind of closeness could trigger feelings he won't be able to suppress. Waking up married to Even after a blurry night in Las Vegas throws a slight wrench in those plans. | 48k

That’s right, y’all! SKAM Fic Love Fest 2018 - AKA our humble attempt at kickstarting some fic appreciation in the SKAM fandom - starts in just a week, and we’re so incredibly excited to start spreading some much needed love around the fandom!

Skam Fic Love Fest (Day 6 | Recommendations)

I’ve been busy all day so technically where I am it hasn’t been day 6 for about 3 hours now so I’m very late to the party BUT I really wanted to do this so without further ado, here are my:

Top Few Comfort Rereads

There are SO many good fics in this fandom. I could talk about them all day long, but for now here are a few of my comfort fics that I always come back to for a reread, whether it’s right before bed and I want something nice before falling asleep or just rereading at random times just for the niceness of it. I’ve probably reread all of the ones on this list at LEAST ten times minimum.

Things Look Different In the Morning by allyasavedtheday ( @littlespooneven )

Gonna just start off this list by reccing the most absolutely amazing fluffy fic in like the entire world, probably because this fic has never ever once failed to make me feel all warm and fuzzy. Reading this fic is probably the closest thing to feeling like you’re cuddling with someone else yourself?? It’s my ultimate comfort read. Seriously, god bless for this fic. This fic the first thing that comes to my head when I hear the word ‘fluff’, and so very deservingly so. 

stay a minute by grinsekaetzchen ( @hotchocolatenthusiast )

Soo, before saying anything else I’m just going to also go ahead and rec everything else this author has written because they are all equally gorgeous and incredible. This fic especially has a special place in my heart because it was one of the first AUs I’d ever read in the skam fandom (or in any fandom, for that matter) and what a lovely experience it was!! I LOVE the way Isak and Even are characterized in this fic, because they’re so spot on. Also, the way their banter is written is top-notch - it can be hilarious, heart-wrenching, sweet, or a mix of all three. I live for reading Isak and Even’s convos in this fic. (The best part? There are two sequels, too!!!)

when your heart is bleeding, i’m coming to get you by cosetties ( @bechnaesun )

A really really lovely AU in which Even works as a love columnist and Isak hooks up with him and then lots of unrealized mutual pining goes on. It’s very very sweet, and I don’t want to spoil anything, but for me personally, this fic has one of the most memorable endings to a fic I’ve ever read. After the way everything is built up and the way everything works out in the end, the ending is the kind of ending that leaves you with a huge smile on your face as well as a need to know what happened next. It’s so great!!

I literally do not think there is anything this author could write that I could dislike, and this fic is no exception! Aside from the fact that their writing is some of the most intricate and beautiful stuff I’ve read, this fic has hugging! So much hugging. I’m a huge sucker for hugs and cuddles, so reading this fic is like being on cloud nine for me. The concept in itself is so sweet and innocent that it always leaves me feeling like I’ve been hugged and with a smile on my face :’)

A Beginner’s Guide to Living with Isak Valtersen by riyku

This author’s writing honestly makes me feel like I’m reading poetry. It’s so so beautiful, and reading this is almost like there’s a rhythm to the words. This fic is shorter but still manages to read in a very sweet way. Each sentence is incredibly written and is packed with a thousand feels. 

Masters of their own domain by evakuality ( @evakuality )

Domestic fluff!! This fic is very very sweet and it just came out recently but I’ve already read it multiple times since then because I’m a sucker for domestic fluff and banter. It features Isak and Even moving into their new home and adjusting to life together. This fic will make you feel similar to what it feels to see Even’s bday video for Isak. Even is so very much in love with Isak, so this reads in a very sweet and easy way, very lovely for a bedtime read. 

I’ll Be Coming Home, Wait for Me by dahlstrom ( @dahlstrom )

Gahh, this fic is so incredible!! The concept in itself is so creative and it fits Isak and Even so well. The entire fic is generally very sweet and light, but I’m pretty sure I’ve come back to reread chapter 3 maybe a thousand times, no exaggeration. It’s one of those chapters that just leaves you smiling. Not to mention that Even is SO great in this fic, I’m just as in love with him as Isak is. Literally everything he says leaves me laughing or smiling or awww-ing or all of the above.

Lovesick (series) by Sabeley

This is a kidfic and it’s quite possibly one of the the sweetest things I’ve ever read, and I had to go ahead and rec the entire series because tbh, I think they’re all amazing. It’s so incredible how well and in character Isak and Even are in this fic with the concept. Reading the first part of this fic from Even’s POV, you’ll not only fall in love with Isak but also with Even’s adorable daughter, and she’s half of why this fic is so great. Watching Isak’s relationship develop with her, especially in the second part of this fic, has got to be one of the most adorable things ever. The entire thing is realistic but also so lovely and fluffy. Seriously - every single chapter has me dying from how cute it is.

SKAM Fic Love Fest | WIPs [p1]

Today’s theme for the SKAM Fic Love Fest [@evaksbinder for details] is WIPs, so my first contribution to today is going to be listing the WIPs I currently follow. Some of them haven’t been updated in a while but i still love them a lot and they’re already great fics on their own! So here we go:

(Nothing like I’m) loving you now - @champagneleftie (friends to lovers + running buddies AU)

I absolutely adore the premise of this fic!! Y’all know that friends to lovers is my jam and it’s done SO WELL in this fic so far, I really love the pining and all the details of the lives they’re building together as roommates without even thinking about it. And it’s just really well written and I love Even’s headspace and it’s just good!!!

Dreamers stay dreaming - bbyfruit / @lesbovilde (future fic)

Future fics aren’t usually my jam i’m not gonna lie but this has to be my own exception and it’s a hell of a big one! I love how well-imagined it is, all the details and the characterization fit an older version of these characters so well. The love between Isak and Even runs so deep and that’s just incredibly lovely. Wholesome and adorable!

If the wind breathes - unsungyellowraincoat / @isaksbestpillow (beekeeper!Isak, alt first meeting, summer fic)

The writing in this fic is SO GORGEOUS!!! Like the flow to it is so unique but so beautiful and easy to get caught up in!! I love how vivid the imagery is, and it’s just so easy to fall into this universe every time you read it. Also it’s such an interesting premise, i’m so looking forward to seeing where this one goes!!

Take me to the stars - iriswests / @juilawicker (enemies to friends to lovers AU)

This feels like a very typical fic to put on a list of WIPs lol but i can’t help it! There’s a reason everyone loves this fic!! Regardless of if ceecee ever finishes it, on its own it’s already such a tour de force, with incredible world building, incredible characterization, incredible writing, everything you could possibly want in a fic!!!

Inside Out(cast) - @evakuality (Archetypes AU)

I can’t get over how completely unique and special this AU idea is! There’s such endless potential in the premise and I love how much thought has been put into crafting the world, and Isak’s character arc is so complex and fleshed out, I seriously look forward to reading every new chapter!!

SFLF2018: Day 6 – Recommendations

A week ago I was the luckiest girl in the world because @skamskada gifted a fic to me. The fic – Og opp til hodet – is one of the best portrayals of Even’s bipolar disorder I’ve read, and it really dealt with the possibility of hypersexuality (which is sometimes a symptom of bipolar disorder) with care and understanding I haven’t seen in fics before. It’s a serious topic but the fic still left me feeling warm and content afterwards.

It also got me thinking about other fics that portray mental illness well and I wanted to make a list of the ones that do a particularly good job with that.

(Disclaimer: I’m not bipolar but I have spent more than fifteen years in the hands of mental health professionals and there’s a long line of diagnoses and misdiagnoses behind me. Certain medications have a tendency to trigger hypomanic or mixed episodes in me, and that’s something that was learned through trial and error. Tl;dr: My opinions are mine, not anyone else’s.)

The first fic I fell in love with in this fandom. Both because of how Even’s illness was written and because Oslo felt actually real.

Skam fic love fest day 2- Inspiration

In honour of skam fic love fest created by @evaksbinder , I've written an extra/epilogue scene for my Skam Fic Week roommates piece, Make me like you! Enjoy! RATED MATURE 

- Even gripped Isak's thighs. Isak pulled him closer between them, smiling against his lips. He knew exactly what he was doing, the minx. He pulled Even's hair at the nape of his neck just the way he liked. A groan came from deep in Even's throat. This boy. His mouth was minty. His hands were warm. Even wanted to fold himself into him, live in his warmth. Isak bit his bottom lip before slipping his tongue in his mouth. Oh God.The heat was quickly gathering in his sweatpants. He hoped Isak planned to do something about it soon. Even was never very patient when it came to his dick.

He inched closer until his own thighs were pressed hard against the cool vanity. Placing a firm hand on Isak's lower back, Even pulled him in. He was desperate for some contact. Isak tilted his hips up so they could grind together. He always knew exactly what he wanted. Even moaned into his mouth.

Isak pulled away with a laugh. He placed a finger on Even's bruised lips. "Shhh", he teased.

"How can you expect me to be quiet when you're touching me like this?"

Isak slid his hand from Even's neck, down his chest, stomach, stopping right at the waistband of his sweats. He hooked a single finger underneath and flicked the band against Even's skin.

"Fuck," Even gasped.

With that cocky smile of his, Isak moved his lips to Even's neck. He nipped at the pale skin there while Even shuddered. Isak cupped Even's dick and gave it a light squeeze. "Like this?"

"Fuck," Even groaned. "Yeah, like that."

"Naughty," Isak said against his skin.

Even laughed, feeling it deep in his chest. Isak pulled away to smile at him. This was the part he loved the most. Being able to laugh and be goofy while fooling around. Sexy and fun were his two favourite moods.

"Keep that up and they'll hear us," Isak said.

Even shrugged. "Consider it payback for all the things we've heard coming from Eskild's room."

"Ugh, man," Isak complained. "Way to ruin the mood."

Even rubbed Isak's thighs. "Yeah right." He leaned in to nuzzle their noses. "You want me."

"Do I?" Isak scoffed. His attempt to mask his smirk was wildly unsuccessful. "You're the one who can't keep your hands off me."

Even demonstrated by giving Isak's thighs a squeeze. "No. I can't."

They shared a smile and leaned in again.

That was when the door burst open. 

Isak and Even jumped, but maintained their embrace. Eskild was standing in the doorway, wearing a blue silk kimono. He accessorised with a shit-eating grin. "Well, well, well. What do we have here? Fornication? In my christian household?"

"Get out, Eskild." Isak tossed a face cloth at him.

"Insubordination," Eskild tisked. "I'll remember this."

"Go away!"

Eskild raised his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright. Chill." He spun dramatically, taking big steps down the hall. "Have fun, boys," he called. "Use protection!"

Even laughed at Isak's pained groan. He rested his head on Even's shoulder. "I need to remember to lock the door."

"I don't know," Even said, giving Isak a squeeze. "I'm really glad you didn't that first time."

Skam Fic Love Fest, Day 6: Recommendations

Where even to begin. There are so many incredible fics in this fandom, and I've seen a lot of lists today, but I'll still try to contribute. So I have (quite painstakingly) chosen three of my favourite fics of all time - and then three more I think deserve more kudos.

So, here goes three of my all-time favourite Skam fics::

Legitimate Expectations by @champagneleftie

Yes, I know, this has been on so many rec lists today - but seriously, this fic is so goddamn fantastic. The character study of a somewhat grown-up Isak, with both redeeming qualities and not so few flaws, and the arc he has to go through to find a better place, is so beautifully done and so, so believable. And I love, love the open, hopeful ending, where everything isn't perfect, but better. I'm still a little starstruck and find it hard to believe that I actually got to co-write a whole fic with P this summer. Seriously, everything she's written is fantastic and you need to read it. Now.

to the bone by @rosesonmyshelf

And yes, I know that I've been going on and on about this fic before, but it's so well-deserved. I've seriously lost count of how many times I've read it. The poetic language, how understated and raw it is, and how you really get under Even's skin. And the ending!

you'll always wait for me to come home by @juilawicker

There are of course a few parallell universe fics out there by now, but this is just so perfectly executed. Beautiful and smart and unbelievably heart-wrenching. I tear up every time I read it, but it's so worth it.

And then, three fics that I consider criminally underrated. Read them if you haven't!

Cathedrals of Light, Salt and Snow / Lover of my impossible soul by @odeto-psyche

This series is so beautiful. Like, seriously, so so lovely. Especially the first part is a pretty heavy read, but the depiction of grief, loss and guilt is so relatable and real. And the way you get to follow both Isak and Even through this, and find out what they really mean to each other - it broke my heart and then pieced it all together again.

How thie fic has less than 400 kudos is beyond me. You've probably heard a lot of people go on and on about how you HAVE to read this but seriously. You do.

This is another somewhat angsty but poetic, wonderful read. Another one of those fics that stay with you for a long time after you've finished it.

Skam Fic Love Fest, day six

Today’s theme is recommendations.  So the first thing I’m going to do is link to the lists of recs I’ve made in the past because those are still representative of the fics and writers I love best in this fandom.  Isak list one, Isak list two, Even list one, Even list two, random answers to questions which effectively also involved making recs.

And now, I want to go into a little more detail about a few from those lists.  When I did them I originally wanted to write a little blurb about each one and why I liked it.  But I ran out of time and patience and ended up just linking them with no commentary.  Today I’d like to remedy that for a few of them, so you know what exactly it is that I was drawn to in each one.  For the ones I know, I have included tumblr links, for the ones I don’t I’d love it if anyone could help out and let me know if any of them are on tumblr so I can link them here too.

1. Alene/ @tristealven More every year I shine light on edges I tried to unfeel.  There’s a mood and a tone to this fic that just climbs into me and sits.  It’s a coda of sorts for another fic which I haven’t actually read (I’m reliably informed it would be too angsty for my angst-averse self), but that doesn’t actually matter.  It works by itself, and the way the setting is done is beautiful and the boys are so lovely together.  It’s a brief moment, a glimpse into their life for a few short hours and yet it conveys so much about them.

2. @kapplebougher It’s a wonderful life.  This fic is one of those that has a perfect synergy between its premise (an au of the movie by the same name) and the character.  Even fits so perfectly into this scenario, and the way it unfolds is so sweet and so perfect for someone in his position.  It haunts in a good way, and the ending when it comes feels so earned.

3. thekardemomme if i could fly.  This is just a really cute au.  Isak’s a fairy and he falls for Even the human.  It’s sweet and it’s moving and the characters are so perfect.  Isak is grumpy and standoffish but can’t keep it up for long under Even’s charm.  This is one that just makes me feel happy and I really enjoyed spending time in this world.

4. inconceivable/ @ravenclawisak   give us no shade.  I’m a sucker for character studies, and this one is just really really lovely.  The writing is beautiful and it captures some essence of Isak in a very short space.

5. gayaisanerd/ @greathalesonfire.  One Call Away.  This is a childhood friends au which is just really lovely.  Set up as a 5+1, it revolves around an in-joke between Isak and Even that becomes more than that.  It’s such a pleasure to read this and watch as things tilt from friends to something else and as always the writing is really lovely as well.

6. Thelovelycarcass The Balloon Intervention.  This is a lighthearted, fun and funny fic that captures the friendship between Even and the Balloon squad in loving detail.  I love all the relationships on show here, and how obvious the ‘interventions’ are.  This is another of those fics to read when you’re feeling like you need some humor and silliness in your life.

7. dahlstrom I’ll be coming home, wait for me.  This is a fic that’s so filled with details and a lovingly created setting.  Yet, for all that, and as wonderfully vivid as it is, the central thing here is the relationships.  Every character is created with their own inner life and they all shine.  Obviously, I love the love story but I also love all the other friendships that make this such a rich experience.

8. Joana789 All the white lies.  This is another really lovely character study of Isak.  Again, in a very short space, it tells an entire story of Isak and the way his world works.  I love the organic way the writing shifts as Isak’s thoughts shift so that by the end, the final comment doesn’t feel like it jars in the face of the fic’s beginning. It all works so perfectly to show the blossoming of the Isak that we know.

What is the SKAM Fic Love Fest?

We’ve been wanting to come up with a way to help people celebrate the fanfiction in this fandom for a long time now, and this is what we came up with: 

A week with open prompts every day to focus on showing appreciation for a different aspect of fic in this fandom! 

This event is geared toward fostering better relationships between writers and readers within the fandom, so both writers and readers can participate as they choose. We really just want this to be something everyone can make their own, so prompts are totally open to interpretation as long as the end goal is to spread some love and positivity around!

(This event is modeled after the all-fandom @ficwritersweek - thank you to the mods for letting us draw some inspiration from you.)

Rules and Guidelines

This event is limited to the scope of Norwegian SKAM.

You can participate in any day that you want, as a reader or a writer or both. There is no minimum or maximum threshold of participation - this event is yours to interpret as you wish!

Please always link back to any fics you reference in any capacity, as credit should remain with the writers.

Any art, gifsets, graphics, etc. posted for this event should be original, not reposts of other people’s work. Screencaps from canon and quotes (provided they are properly sourced) are excepted.

Skam Fic Love Fest (Day 5 | Quotes)

And with as much gentleness as he possesses, he slides his arms around Even’s waist, curling protectively around his back and pressing his forehead right between Even’s shoulders. (This was one of the first fics I read in the Skam fandom! It’s a gorgeous, gorgeous modern Romeo & Juliet AU. I remember I read the fic and absolutely loved it, but this quote specifically has always stuck with me ever since. A few months after I read it I remember not being able to get the quote out of my mind and trying to place where it came from and I scoured through all my bookmarks until I found the fic again and ended up rereading the entire thing, and it was just as lovely and sweet as the first time. Even looks at him and squints, hard. "I love plants," Even says suddenly. Isak is taken aback. "O-okay? I'm happy for you, buddy." "I love flowers," Even says, taking a step closer to Isak. He's so close to Isak that he can see all of the individual hues and shades of blue that make up Even's eye color. Even presses him into the bookshelf and brackets Isak's body with his arms. He tucks the amaryllis behind Isak's ear. Isak can't breathe. "I know a lot about flowers," Even continues. His fingers trail across the side of Isak's neck. "I know a lot." Isak is scared but oddly aroused. He doesn't know why Even is threateningly talking about his green thumb like some kind of horticulturist serial killer. He doesn't know why Even is trapping him up against a bookshelf in his place of work. But fuck. Isak is so turned on.

As long as I have something in my mouth,” said Even. Oh my. “Big. Definitely big,” said Isak. “For me. I mean. I’m big.” “This is the most fucked up conversation I’ve ever witnessed,” said Mahdi. “Holy shit.”

“This is terrible,” Isak’s voice breaks the silence in a whisper laugh. “Awful,” Even agrees. “Who’s idea was this?” Even slaps a hand to his forehead, letting out a low chuckle. “Yours.” “Fuck.” “Should we just get in bed?” Even suggests. “Fuck it. I’m going to. You made your floor. Now you have to lie in it.” Even stands, flopping onto the bed, which now feels like cloud nine. Isak stays still. “I was only kidding,” Even clears up.

He quickly averts his gaze and frowns at his laptop. “Oh.” Mikael groans out loud, startling Isak slightly. He glances over to see him slumped over his notes. Must be some killer paper.

“Could I actually bother you for a spoon?” Even questioned, nodding towards his mug. Except Isak must have missed the nod— that, or his sleep deprived brain just ignored it and jumped right to the first thing it focused on. A spoon. Spoons. Spooning. God, a proper cuddle sounded absolutely heavenly right now. What Isak would give to crawl into bed, burrow into some cozy blankets, and curl into someone’s (Even’s) arms. They could just lay there, maybe Even would trace shapes into Isak’s back, or maybe he’d play with his hair— it didn't matter to Isak, either sounded lovely. It would be warm and comfortable and he’d finally be able to catch up on all the sleep he’d missed. Isak was so fixated on the idea of spooning with Even that instead of retreating back to the counter where he could grab a spoon— the metal kind one used to eat soup or stir coffee— he walked around the table so that he was standing right behind Even and draped himself across the other boy’s back. He looped his arms around Even’s chest and hugged him tightly from behind.

What do you think?” “They both look like crap, to be honest.” Isak mutters and quickly, his eyes widen almost comically as he most likely realizes he did not mean to say it out loud, Even guesses. Even throws his head back, laughing, because, wow. This boy.

Was that Mozart you were just playing? He very nearly convinced himself to give up on the whole thing. Who’s your favorite composer? He checked his hair in the mirror again. Did you know I’m actually related to Beethoven?

Isak gave him a smug grin. “Or maybe it was the way I attempted to cook dinner for you Thursday and you actually pretended to enjoy it. I mean, what couple does that, right?” “Isak,” Even groaned, begging him to stop. “Oh, I’m not done,” Isak said and then continued. “Maybe it was all of the kissing? I can see where that might have confused you.” With each taunt, Even grew harder in his pants, silently cursing that this was his automatic reaction to Isak’s heckling.

Skam Fic Love Fest 2018: Inspiration

Thank you to @evaksbinder for the lovely idea of the SKAM Fic Love Fest!

@vesperthine and I are writing an AU together. We’re doing quite a bit of talking about the concept and building that particular universe, and eventually we started gathering pictures, partly for inspiration, partly to show each other what we imagine so we’re on the same page. We tend to do a lot of “YESSSSS”-ing at each other’s photo finds, so it’s going pretty well. This post is maybe more of a “great tool for co-writing” appreciation post than a general inspiration appreciation post, but still.
