africa jul 19
wow lol itâs taken me 2 years to actually put this post together. a LOT has changed since then and it makes me immensely happy to recognize how lucky we were that weâd had 2 insane years of travelling right before the pandemic hit. but this post is not to dwell on that, so letâs get on with it!!
this was our amazing 2019 africa trip~
jun 30, 19 â˘â˘â˘Â we make our way from hong kong to the netherlands on klm airlines. i distinctly remember how impressed i was with the quality of service and the comfort of the 12ish hour flight. after around 16 hours of commute, we just want to stay in and chill, so we order room service and call it a night early. i recall wearing a fun t-shirt that read, ânot to be rude, but shut the fuck upâ which i personally find hilarious and endearing, but which made the guy at the front desk quite uncomfortable. lollll oops!
vimeo
jul 1, 19 â˘â˘â˘ yay! we had a full day alone in amsterdam. we (i) decided to walk from the hotel to the town center, because itâs fun experience new cities by exploring them on foot!! why not? you come across many things that you just couldnât have planned to find.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/43ff25e056655998d1304c23c1af782b/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-40/s540x810/ce1c58f50f62cd4edf7d2fd574ce5ed8059f8d1b.jpg)
look how beautiful the canals in amsterdam are! anywhere you turn, itâs picturesque.
we had lunch at wagamama because i saw that the avant garde vegan, gaz oakley, had done a collaboration with them at some point, so there are some guaranteed vegan options. we then walk around the bloemenmarkt and find our way to the cannabis college, which had 2 verdampers for rent! yesssss! i was so happy.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cbfef46873046958845fd16a02150a7d/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-a0/s640x960/c4a5f3e5f821e77ee43a4d1ee3374196598d2356.jpg)
we explored and walked around more, then stopped by a coffee shop to smoke a bit more. there was a lovely vegan cafe right next door, which iâd been eyeing when we went in to smoke, so we had a top up on coffee and matcha there. we saw a cute frenchie across the road and missed the dogs so...
vimeo
we had dinner at this place called cafe frijdag (which means Friday!) which was delicious! so happy that amsterdam had vegan options for me
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/76ffb22c230ffe8498f58ad470c035aa/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-d3/s540x810/5e7af0bb2240e970eaa79ccbf7a6d831001e43ae.jpg)
jul 2, 19 â˘â˘â˘ we got up bright and early to meet my parents for breakfast and we go to the airport to catch our flight to kigali. about 10 hours later, we were buying sim cards at the kigali airport. we then checked in to the radisson for the night, and it was feeling very surreal to be in africa. i remember feeling anxious.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/aa9d1a05ce5a5c0f51638ee930029d1f/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-46/s540x810/b8f4bf5bdcb53e202a1c4664f064dda16aee5051.jpg)
jul 3, 19 â˘â˘â˘ today started on a somber note. we went to the kigali genocide memorial. i cried a lot, especially at the exhibit with the photographs of only a fraction of the victims during that time.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/15c1a8bad52fc99a0cdda804305dc1b1/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-46/s640x960/fcfe637c0021cb05d8d425ab21695fae5766c2fb.jpg)

then we drove at turtle speed to our next hotel, which was a loooong long way away. we arrived at the lake kivu serena hotel in time for a very late lunch. the cuisine here consists of rice, tortilla-like wraps and papadum-esque crispy rolls.

this fruit tastes disgusting... it looks like a tomato but isnât sweet at all. i only remember spitting it out, trying another piece from another plate, and still hating it.
vimeo
thankfully everyone wanted to relax and take it easy, so we ordered in for dinner and spent the rest of the night chilling.
jul 4, 19 â˘â˘â˘ we drove out to see the border between rwanda and the democratic republic of congo. we were told to be very careful about taking photos of the police officers there, so we were. it felt strange to take photos of the border, iâm clearly very ignorant of the relations and history. it was a very busy juncture, with a sea of people crossing this way and that, lots of cars bumbling about and a lot of fruit, as i recall. hahah.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f7477c53ac9dcb267945a16a55c4613a/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-01/s540x810/33b9882103af17cb8527b2435da9826eaffb2ebf.jpg)
we then drove out to see a makeshift hot spring. we were asked if we wanted to take a dip, but none of us wanted to..... felt bad saying no, but really not worth it, sorry.
vimeo

https://vimeo.com/568059672Â (okay, iâm unable to embed more videos so links will have to do until i figure out something better...)
we took a boat ride along the lake, but there wasnât that much to see around there, it was pretty dirty and murky... reminded me of the hong kong harbor, with trash floating around. it was also freezing, so i wasnât having any fun at all.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d2e511faec5126448b4d398ed29c0a23/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-d7/s500x750/443b9041fe767566e90c9cbe211aa75bbb0d8ef8.jpg)
we went to the gym and worked out a little bit because there was a lot of time to kill in between returning to hotel and our private pre-planned bbq dinner on the beach. we were lucky enough to enjoy traditional rwandan dancing which was absolutely gorgeous.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2ee062454f27f285fcbbee85a256d318/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-93/s540x810/c99b7fabc13d635a16d290559b37f078a4c9b07c.jpg)
jul 5, 19 â˘â˘â˘ we spent most of our morning in the car, having crossed the border to the republic of uganda. we stopped by a cute cafe along the way for lunch, but it was a grueling 4-5 hour car ride to mahogany springs, which was our hotel for the gorilla trekking. we managed to arrive around 715pm, by which time it was pretty dark and scary outside. the other car had broken down twice, once in the dark as well, so spirits were low and there was a lot of muttering and grumbling done under peopleâs breath. everyone was ravenous by the time dinner was served, but despite how late it was, it was absolutely delicious and i was happy! (also grateful for our car not having broken down)
jul 6, 19 â˘â˘â˘ we woke up VERY early in anticipation of gorilla trekking. we waited around the hotel lobby after some coffee and biscuits for breakfast. it was an awful lot of waiting, but i didnât sense anything wrong until i saw how pissed off our tour guide looked. it turns out our permits had gotten stolen! probably bribes.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6dd5bdb881f85638ea364b2fe49bbe8c/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-1e/s540x810/ceb1dcb119ee5a7b4d5ff573506f3821f9dd0e31.jpg)

here we were mucking around, still anticipating gorilla trekking.
we didnât let it slow us down though. i actually am grateful for how things turned out because we wouldnât have gotten to experience uganda like that without this turn of events. we joined a community tour that showed us how tea is harvested, how coffee is grown, harvested and round, as well as how bananas may be used to make juice, beer and gin! very cool

these are the different stages of a bananaâs life: from raw to ripe to fermenting. it can be made into juice and liquor.
we then visited a local school, where we were entertained by kids from kindergarten to 6th grade. we learned about their mission and goals to educate the younger generations by providing classrooms and a dining hall and even dorms for boarding. the singing and dancing was BRILLIANT. loved every single second of it. wish iâd joined in and not cared about what anyone thought.

we stopped by a womenâs community center and saw a lot of cool crafts and art. that was on the way to the batwa pgymy tribe. we learned how they integrated with the batwa community. they showed us some dances they have dedicated to the gorillas, for which they are very grateful because it brings tourists in and therefore gives them an income. they showed us how to use a bow and arrow to hunt, and how they weave baskets and make handicrafts.

one of our guides spotted 2 chameleons, which was super impressive. he even brought the chameleon down close to us so that we could see it. i wonât ever understand how he was able to spot it in the wild, and from so far away as well.
we returned to the lodge and had lunch. the veggie stir fry was pretty dang good. it was served with posho, which is a maize bread, beans, and also matate (???) which reminded me a lot of plantain. back at the hotel, we chilled (without tv or wifi) until dinner. alan fell asleep, and i kept myself busy sorting out photos. dinner was early, and our night was early because we were promised gorilla trekking in the morning!

delicious!
jul 7, 19 â˘â˘â˘ we were up and ready to leave by 7am. we were in the clear! we drove a little bit to the bwindi impenetrable national park for some entertainment (dancing and singing) from local students and a hilarious briefing on what to expect and doâs and donâts of the trek.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b09bca59ebcfa38e0274cc0d5ba00a0f/ca4d7d36496cb5e3-3e/s540x810/4834902e0c52f8dbae78dc4e20539299754129d8.jpg)

we then had separate meetings within our trekking groups. ours was quite big, with 10 tourists, because michael and our guides had spent HOURS the day before handling our stolen permits. an exception was made to accommodate us all, so our group consisted of the starkeâs, alan, kerstin, a couple from oregon, and an english family. we had to get in another car and drive a bit to the mountain, where we met our porters and then began our trek!

the hike up was difficult, and at times i legit feared for my life because the mud/rocks were loose and one wrong step would have had us tumbling down the edge of the mountain... and that was me at age 28!! cannot imagine how my parents were feeling...

as we made our way to the gorilla family, we encountered a solo young male who was soooo friendly, he cut across our group, like right down the middle, and he even reached out and touched my mom on her jacket! it was wild that a gorilla was that close to us, and then he left as quickly as he had joined.

we kept on hiking and found a large. our guide, meddie, told us that we were lucky to have found such a large family doing a whole bunch of different activities: we saw mothers nursing their babies, babies swinging from the trees and playing with one another, sub adult males beating their chests and other members of the family eating and feeding. we even got to watch as a silverback gorilla pulled a very healthy poop out of its butt, and we ran into him snacking again later on.

on the way down, it started raining a little bit. we all slipped at one point or another, but it was especially dangerous for my dad so we all had to slow down our pace a little bit to match his speed. thank god he had a porter there to help him out and save him.Â

we returned to the same place as where we had started our morning for a debriefing, and we each received a certificate to show that we had been on this trek. we waited around a little bit for the other group to arrive, and were once again very grateful that our experience was much more pleasant. one lady in the other group had to leave the trek on a stretcher, and the others were caught in the rain on their way to the gorillas, so it must have been a cold and awful experience on their end.Â

us after the successful completion of our gorilla trek!!
we headed to a local inn nearby where we had a late lunch and could change into dry clothes. we then drove a bumpy 4 hours to mweya safari lodge, located inside queen elizabeth national park. we made a couple of stops along the way (one of which was in the middle of nowhere so that people could go pee out in the open where animals are potentially roaming around?!?!?) and when we finally arrived, it was already 830/9ish pm.... we insisted to order room service because we were pooped, and we got showered and hit the hay.

we drove around the gorgeous park and saw elephants, warthogs, antelope, eagles, all sorts of bird and butterflies, buffalo and weird-looking lemur or ferret creatures. we thought it was great, but some other members of the group were underwhelmed.Â

cute antelope we saw on the tour
after lunch at the hotel, we went on a boat tour around the kazinga channel. i think it was called lake edward? we saw many animals again, including crocodile, elephants, buffalo, all sorts of birds, and hippos.

we followed a few elephant cuties along the bank. it drizzled for a little bit in between.
dinner was delicious. it was a great buffet, although i was severely grossed out by the ants that joined us on the dining table.

there were so many animals on the grounds of the lodge. donât be fooled by how cute these guys look, we saw them fight over raw meat at some point! we also saw a warthog stroll around.

jul 9, 19 â˘â˘â˘ we were up bright and early today for a quick breakfast before heading right on out. on the way to entebbe, we stopped by a local motel for lunch. the service was SUPER slow (maybe because we had such a huge group together!) but it was delicious and worth the wait! i ordered a coleslaw and avocado vinaigrette (this was THE HUGEST AVOCADO iâve ever seen in my life?!?!?), a veggie biryani and some of paulâs aloo matar. we then filed back into our cars for several more hours of âafrican massageâ to the next destination. had an early night, i think we ordered room service to the hotel room and tried to get our butts to bed as early as possible because it was another EARLY day the morning after.

we stopped at the equator in uganda to take some photos, of course!

jul 10, 19 â˘â˘â˘ my alarm was set for 4am this morning.... đĽ˛đ
we left the hotel at 5am for the airport and obviously i was tired and grumpy and just in a crappy mood overall hahahah. our first flight was barely 45 minutes.... to mbarara iâm guessing?? i was assigned a middle seat on my own originally but no one was in the aisle seat so i moved over woohoo! our first layover was 2-3 hours, not too bad. we hung around at the lounge area.Â

our second flight was to harare. alan and i managed to snag 2 joined seats towards the back end of the plane so that we could watch conanâs traevel shows on his ipad. there was a pretty scary drop when we were descending imto harare. i think we just stayed on the plane for about half an hour so some people could get on the plane and join.

we flew about 3 hours more to cape town, and we were EXCITED to arrive. it was a hell of a time checking in, and it was a nicer hotel in a nice area so we decided to just stay in and order room service again. we had a slow night and it was SOOOO needed. cape town felt a lot closer to the first world and we were enjoying and appreciating it to the max. we even started playing pokemon go and its harry potter-themed equivalent (oops forgot the name), but to be fair, we didnât get cell phone service everywhere we went, so it would cut on and off.

jul 11, 19 â˘â˘â˘ eek, cape town was COOOOLD! luckily i brought a jacket along, we really really needed to cover up and stay warm! got to sleep in a bit, we left by 830am to drive to the pebble beach by the water to take some gorgeous photos. we stopped by chapmanâs peak for another photo op, then drove to boulders beach in simonâs town to see the penguins!! it was such a dream, loved every second of it.

saw a cute ostrich on the way somewhere
next we went to cape point. we took the funicular to the top, then hiked up to the lighthouse. we took pots of great pics but omg it was EVEN MORE freezing there. we had lunch at the two oceans restaurant. fancy and delicious! the calamari was bomb, the arancini was alright, but the main of chickpea and mushrooms was delish. after lunch we headed right on back to the hotel.

alan and i walked over to woolworths to get water and makeup remover and snacks. on the way back we stopped by PLANT for dinner. i was sooo excited to try out their vegan fast food, so i ordered a lot of the menu. we got the quinoa salad, mac and cheez, seitan lasagna, schawarma, pot stickers, siu mai, spag bolognese, tiramisu, milk tart and a bunch of other random vegan snacks. i was in HEAVEN. even though some of the stuff was cold by the time we got back to the hotel and ate, it still tasted DELICIOUS. i was soooo impressed.

jul 12, 19 â˘â˘â˘ today we went to a wine blending workshop at grande provence winery. the first step was to blend 3 different mixtures. after tasting them all, we decided the last blend was the winner, with 40% zinfandel, 10% shiraz and 50% cabernet. so then we blended up a big bottle of it, corked it, thew on a hand-signed label, and then walked around the beautiful indoor and outdoor art galleries.

there was a lot of cute art at the winery! i loved all the dogs and greyhounds around the property. these 3 dancing pigs came a close second
we drove a little way for lunch at another beautiful vineyard. i had a charcoal ciabatta, tomato quinoa salad, root veggie risotto and steamed veggies on the side. we skipped the wine tasting because our lunch overran a bit and our bus driver buford said that the traffic would be pretty heavy on a friday afternoon and it wouldnât be worth it to be stuck on the bus. so we just walked around the cute little town we were at, franschhoek (??)

jul 13, 19 â˘â˘â˘ FINALLY we had a day to sleep in!!!! we let our group know the night before that we didnât want to join the walking tour around the city. we woke up and made our way to the companyâs garden, which was directly next to our hotel. we played harry potter wizards unite and ran into the tour group. my mom told me later on it was a good decision of ours not to join haha.

after that, we needed to walk our full tummies off. we headed to the waterfront, where there were many shops and stalls in indoor and outdoor malls. it was just a really good time walking around there and we saw soooo many things. there was bubble tea in south africa, a yogurt bar that made me sooo happy, dogs were up for adoption, and a bootleg jabbawockeez performance at the city square. we walked back to the hotel after that and got ready for bed.

Rika Kihira x Gutto sports
A while ago Rika appeared in a Japanese tv program. The program was pretty long and unfortunately a full video of it isnât available at the moment. However the program, cut in 6 parts, was uploaded on drive and translated by @juronom on twitter.Â
Parts: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Translation of the most interesting parts, done by Juro, please do not repost without credit. Part 1: Gutto Sport presenters commented that Rika is smaller in height than what her aura gives off. They ask Takeshi Honda and Akiko Suzuki about their shared skating experience with Rika.
T: We skated together at Kandai rink, so I meet her almost every day. I just met her yesterday too.
R: I lost count how many times I greet you already *laugh*
TH: Sheâs like *comes up to me* âKonnichiwaâ (Hello), then skate away, then come back and âKonnichiwaâ again.
A questionnaire with Rika on what she thought was her best weapon?
Upper left: Maintain positivity Lower left: No edge error Right: 3A (no 1)
The secret of her 3A:
- âThe type that hasnât been seen until nowâ-Takeshi Honda
- Comparison with legendary 3A by Japanese ladies:
o Midori Ito: height that can be comparable to menâs 3A
o Mao Asada: beautiful air position (vertical jumping posture)
o Rika Kihira: quick rotation, clear-cut (neat, sharp) 3A => allows her landing to be relaxed&free
On what she used as reference for her jumps:
âIn the past, I used to refer to male skatersâ method of jumping quads, etc, carefully observe them. Then I always looked at Mao-chanâs amazing 3A as well. Recently, I rely on observation of) my own best condition, how much of the intensity of (practice) it can handle. Something like âWhen my muscles are at this condition, I should practice increase the intensity of my practice (practice many times).â On the other hand, if on that day, my jumps are off, Iâd stop and let my body return (to its good condition) properly.â
Physical check: the secret why Rika can rotate so fast?
According to Prof Sakurai Tomono- researching on the mechanism of athletesâ muscles: her hip and thigh muscles can contract quickly.
Experiment for Rika: measuring the distance of oneâs bunny hop from a kneeling position.
Average for boys: 41cm; girls: 20cm
Rikaâs distance was 65cm
Part 2Â
Another secret: Rika is very âobsessedâ with her skates (including blades)
She brought the pair she was using at the moment to the set.
Each of Her skating boots, (like other skatersâ), is meticulously customized. When the skates first arrived, she had to adjust the bladesâ position and angle, how much they lean forward or backward, towards one side or another etc, by herself carefully. She couldnât say she could adjust them to their perfect condition, but she tried her best to tune them to as convenient a position as possible for her skating, millimeter by millimeter. Not only the position, but the gap between boots and blades are also controlled. Even if the gap is one 1mm wider or narrower, her skating can be affected greatly, to the extent that she could either do 30 3As in one day or none with the boots.
It takes more than 2 weeks to get used to a new pair.
Presenter asked why she couldnât keep using the same pair.
Itâs because the leather will soften, especially at the area around laces. Rika said when thereâre some leather materials coming off around that area, she canât jump at all. She changed boots around every 3 months, and since the boots take 3 weeks to be produced, she couldnât change to a new pair immediately, and must notice when the pair in use shows some signs of softening.
The presenters need to stop Rika before she talks forever about her skating boots-her obsession.
Rika: âAnd then, recently, this partâŚâ Everyone laughs: âShe honestly can stopâ
Questionnaire with Rika:
What does Rika have on her mind: 100% figure skating.
Takeshi Hondaâs question: âRika, is that really ok?â
Itâs about her socks.
Skaters generally stick certain types of specially made socks produced by 1 brand when competing, but Rika is ok with any types of socks and doesnât mind if her socks are ankle-length or longer. She just grabbed a random pair if she forgot her socks. (t/n: sheâs actually using the kind of cute socks sold at tutu-ana (1000yen for 3 pairs) or gift shops lollll)
Akiko Suzukiâs question:
Akiko noticed that at ice shows, before eating, Rika always quickly takes photo before eating, but not in the manner suitable for posting food photos on SNS. Akiko thinks she did it to calculate nutrition value.
Rika: âAfter a day, I calculate my total calories intake. Combini food has calories value on them, but I donât know the values for every separate item, so I took photos of everything, then calculate the amount laterâ.
Presenter: Is it hard to maintain (athletic) body form?
Rika: âYes, I try as hard as I can. Even if I lose weight (or gain weight). If I lose too much weight, I canât jump.â
Presenter: As a 17-year-old girl, you may want to eat things like sweets, drink tapioca tea etc
Rika: âWell technically I can, but when I eat things like cake or tapioca, which still adds to the amount of calories intake, meat, or such is still important, so I need to eat food that can be converted into energy correctly. If I eat cake or tapioca, my dietâs efficiency will be tampered with.â
Presenter: You canât even after winning?
Rika: âBut still, I still eat the food that can be converted to energyâŚâ
Presenter: âPizza and cola?â
Rika: *shake her head vigorously*
âIf I sleep with an unfilled stomach, I feel like my muscles arenât there. There are times when I was thinking about whether to get dinner or not, or just only eat the meat properly (not carbs), and then I felt like my muscles decrease, so I concluded that I must properly eat dinner anyways.â
Part 3
Coach Hamada rating Rika:
âShe is very disciplined. Her practice ability is very good, and she always has the drive to improve herself. Not in a reckless but proper way.â Scoring (from upper left going right)
- Comprehensiveness (4)
- Linguistic ability (2): Â âI wish she could handle English questions in interview sessions or press-conferences. Since she is competing internationally, itâd be nice if her linguistic ability could be improved. Also, she may have more and more international friends, and international fans.â
- Performing ability (4)
- Decisiveness (4)
- Athleticism (5)
- Narcissist power(3) (t/n: lol what =)) but sorry it wasnât mentioned at all)
- Talkativeness (2): âShe doesnât talk much. Iâve never heard her jokesâ
- Humor (2)
- Girliness(4): âShe has good sense of fashion, how to coordinate clothes.â
- Considerateness (4): âAt ice shows, she always immediately wears and takes photos with all the presents from fans. She wants to send her gratitude to fans, and tell everyone she is really happy with the gifts, which she canât do often.â
Rika: âYes, Iâm bad (at English). There are many times I want to tell (international fans) âIâm very happy that you support meâ, but I donât know how to. So I just *raise both hands and wave nervously while saying âhai (yes)â and nodding*â
Figure skatingâs This and That â presented by Satoko Miyahara.
Top 3 Figure skating truths by Satoko
1. Iâm very embarrassed when messing up the stsq.
2. I fight time difference (jet lag) every day.
3. I only forget important things. (Satokoâs story about losing her Olympics ID)
On practicing with Satoko:
Rika: âI practice with her almost every day.â
Presenter: So do you talk?
Rika: âYes, but for things irrelevant to skating. Satoko normally said things like âI forgot my CD >_<â. Satoko-chan is really interestingâ
Figure skating truths by Rika
1. What does she think throughout a 4-min performance?
âThereâre many things I think about. For instance: âThe axel is coming up nextâ; âItâs bad if I overdo this partâ; âI canât miss this axelâ; âIf I made mistake on this jump, all the jumps I landed until now will become meaninglessâ.
Asked about whether she had entered a âzoneâ, where she wasnât thinking anything but everything went well.
âIn the past, that happened to me a lot too, but recently, sometimes I donât think when performing, and thereâs excitement too. However, when looking at and understand the real event happening, and thinking that âI donât want to repeat the mistakes Iâve made until nowâ âŚthen (that thought) appears in front of me, and in my head, then Iâd think that âI donât want to this (repeat the mistake)â and reconfirm the jumps. When I jump, itâs unconscious reflex, but I think about my surrounding, my own conditions or even my nervousness.â
Presenter: Itâs the positive feelings of being able to see everything.
Rika: âYes, itâs like thatâ.
Part 4
Choreography challenge with Ryouga Haruhi (t/n: Ryouga is known for playing male role in Takarazuka Revenue, a Japanese all-female musical theater troupe)
The program discussed the role of expression.
Presenter asked Rika what she does as supplement to her expression in figure skating.
Rika: âI do classical ballet around 2-3 hours/week, and I also go to dance schoolâ
Presenter: Dance school? Like rock dance and hiphop?
Rika: âYes, things like hiphop.â
*show vid of her practicing dance in the US *
Rika: âThis is the dance lesson I had in the US, but normally, I have dance lessons that use more hip-hop-like music and more strong movements.â
Everyone complimented on her (and Satokoâs) beautiful movement.
Rika wanted to ask Ryoga about the way she and Takarazuka actresses use their expression, how they pose, and the angle of their faces.
Ryoga explained that expressions showed of male and female roles are opposite: soft and flexible vs cool, then she proceeded to give âposingâ lesson. She showed the movement patterns of: female role, lower-class male role and upper-class male role.
Rika was asked to do the movement of âlower-class manâ then âupper-class manâ (the one with hand on her face) and she managed very well, receiving compliments from the presenters. Part 5
About the Nobeyama Kougen training camp, known as the place where âGolden-eggsâ of Japan figure skating are assembled. Notable alumni: Mao Asada, Yuzuru Hanyu, Takeshi Honda, Shizuka Arakawa, Rika Kihira.
The training camp is 4 days long, with various training sessions from 8am-9.30pm. The campâs purpose is to evaluate and search for skaters with potential and to check their living attitude as well, like how they conform to curfews, etc. Rika went to the camp 3 years ago, and she said it was very tough.
Rika: â(Being there), you have to worry about whether you will be seeded or if you will be assigned to any competition, and then thereâll be new comersâŚso in every aspect, you have no way but show you are the best one. Even off-ice physical checking is so tough, squatting/ running around etc, that on the next day, I canât even move my legs or climb the stairs, but still have to perform programs.â
Presenter: Do you want to go back?
Rika: âMaybeâ
Akiko said being there makes you realize she was hand-picked from among all skating children in Japan. That really changes her working attitude and elevates her determination.
Video about legendary 3A by Midori Ito, done 1 minute before the end of her program at 1992 Olympics. The 3A has become the trail-blazer for future generations.
Rika: âI donât think I can do 3A in the latter half at all. Itâs already so tough to have it as the 2nd or 3rd jump but I donât think Iâve ever tried jumping it 1 minute before the end of the program.â
Part 6
Rikaâs impression of Midori Ito: âI experienced challenging 3A but failing in competitions. The first time I met her, she comforted me: âAhh 3A is very difficult. Though itâs difficult, I really support youâ, such kind actions.â
Presenter: But you havenât got any chance to talk to her leisurely
Rika: âNo, I havenâtâ
Presenter: Letâs do it now ^^
Rika: âHeeehhhâ
Midori Ito appeared: âYouâve worked hardâ (to Rika)
âIâm so happy. You even remember the 1st time we met. That makes me so happy.â
Rika: âI do rememberâ
Midori: âReally?â
âItâs amazing. You can jump it (3A) stably nowâ to Rika.
Midori said she contemplated whether to do 3Lz or 3A when she was spinning in that program, then decided to do 3A. She asked Rika: âIf you made mistake on the 1st 3A, do you think about the 2nd time?â
Rika: âWell, but Iâve not thought about it in the latter half, really, (3A) in the latter half itâs sugoiiâŚâ
Midoriâs secret for her super high 3A is to âskate with all her power at top speedâ. Because she entered 3A at a very high speed, she can get to that height. She described that method of jumping 3A is like: âDoing long jump (a athletic sport) but rotating at the same timeâ (t/n: Rikaâs face loll)
Rika said she didnât jump 3A at top speed because she canât control her axis.
Midori: âHowever, in my generation, we just focus on doing our jumps at high speed, but in Kihira-sanâs generation, the programs have to be beautiful as whole, and in such programs, there is 3A. Itâs a generation that (3A) isnât effective if the programs arenât beautiful itself. Itâs amazing that there are beautiful programs but at the same time allow to do 3A efficiently.â *looks at Rika* Rika is very happy to receive advice from Midori. Rika: âWith this experience, I will try harder and harder every day in order to create a sense of stability. Then, I must perform quads cleanly too.â
Midoriâs advice to Rika: âSheâs very serious. She is already going forward while staying fixated to her goal. So, *looks at Rika* try to keep yourself in good health. You canât suddenly jump triples or quads. You canât say youâll be free of injury at all, but you have to make compromises with injury and your body conditions. When youâre injured, thereâre things you canât do, so..but then, itâs vital to harmonize things you havenât done and your techniques. Itâll be nice if you can try to balance those things. I hope that youâll try your best.â
Rikaâs aims: âThis season, my first goal is to aim for the podium at the World championship, which I couldnât do last season. Then, I will make my best effort every day towards my biggest dream of winning the Beijing Olympics.â
